For those who have been wondering where Mr. Bill's musical wanderings would lead him in the wake of his first solo CD, Ghost Town, Blues Dream provides the ambitious answer. Nearly all Frisell's fascinations are here: the pastoralism of Have a Little Faith, a Nashville tinge, and the cinematic sounds of Quartet. There's also the electronic loop atmospheres of his ECM and early Elektra years and the alternating Ellingtonian and Salvation Army horns of his quintet period. All of this melded into 18 new compositions commissioned by the Walker Arts Center.

A textural richness comes courtesy of Greg Leisz's various guitars backing Frisell's own guitar and a stunning integration of three horns: Curtis Fowlkes's trombone, Ron Miles's trumpet, and Billy Drewes's saxophones. As you listen to this string of broad-shouldered pieces, tributes to greats like Ron Carter, and strangely blues-inflected soundscapes, it's apparent that the solos of Ghost Town can operate as a sort of sketch or "cartoon" for this, the full painting; or a short that is then expanded into a feature. Frisell's career is taking on the aspect of a well-crafted movie or novel that explores different story lines before bringing them together for the finale (and this might be the prelude to the finale). --Michael Ross

Released in 1969, just eight months after In Search of the Lost Chord, Threshold continues the Moody Blues's journey as cosmic seekers but in a less exotic manner. Here, Justin Hayward packs away the sitar and the band has swept most of the mystical and Eastern influences under the Kilim rug, replacing them with a science-fictional search for meaning and futuristic production methods. As on two earlier albums, Graeme Edge regales listeners with esoteric poetry, this time adding a whimsical, ironic edge to his ponderous verse. The songs have also undergone a similar overhaul, allowing the band's talent for melody to overcome the psychedelic whirls that embellished the earlier albums. John Lodge's assertive bass takes control of the bucolic "Lovely to See You," Roy Thomas's deceptively cheerful "Dear Diary," and the upbeat "Lazy Days," which also contains an unexpected lyrical sting. Indeed, the entire album is underpinned with a wistful melancholy as the grandiose rockers capture the bittersweet fleeting moments of the '60s. --Jaan Uhelszki

Tour de force.......2007-06-06

This album truly is an absolute work of art. Others here have offered up fantastic reviews of this album, so I am only going to briefly comment on the songs that struck a particularly strong chord with me, whether good or bad.

I can honestly say that out of the thirteen tracks, there is only one that I really don't care for: 'Dear Diary'. Who knows, maybe I might learn to love this song someday, and if I do change my mind, then I will most definitely alter my negative review. But right at this moment, it's the one and only song that keeps this album from being a perfect 10 in my book. Usually- and with good reason- I am such a fan of Ray Thomas' work, but this song does absolutely nothing to present this man's awesome vocal abilities in a favorable light. Perhaps if he had sang it differently, ie in his normal vocal tone, it would most assuredly have been a great song. The tune, melody, and lyrics are quite good actually. It's the "way" that Ray sings it that turns me off- sorry Ray. (I still love and miss you, dear sir). Ray does redeem himself very well on 'Lazy Day', a sweet little ode to the peaceful times to be had on an English Sunday afternoon. It's not an intricate or deep song by any means but it has its merits.

Now on to the awesome Mr. Hayward's ballads: Justin's 'Lovely to See You' is a concert staple/favorite for a very good reason: it's a truly lovely, understated song that just makes you plain feel good! 'Never Comes the Day' is one of my favorite Justin penned/lead vocal songs. I had heard it often described as being slightly weird, the lyrics "but you WILL love me tonight" in particular. Perhaps I'm a little slow but I just don't get that feeling from this song. To me, this song is about a man in love who is honest enough to admit that there's "stuff" hidden inside of him that isn't pretty, may be hard to love, and perhaps should be kept hidden. This could be speaking of any of us, myself included. Another reason for me to admire this song: John's background vocals. Any time (on the same song) that he can sing that fab falsetto AND he and Justin can sing harmony is an oh-so-good time to be had by my eager ears. In rounding out Hayward's songs, I have only one word to adequately describe "Are You Sitting" (co-written by Ray) MAGICAL!!

What to say about my dear John's two songs: 'Send Me No Wine' is a great, catchy tune, albeit a MUCH too short one(why oh why John?) This one has a decidely country feel, flavor, and sound to it. This little gem could have come straight out of Nashville in the late 1960's and been right at home here in the Southern United States. This is truly something so very different from anything I've ever heard from him, though he still rocks it out as well. I believe John's songwriting muse short-changed him on this album, as his next great offering 'To Share My Love' is a much too brief song as well. "Makes me feel good" is how Lodge starts this ditty and it does make me feel quite good indeed to hear it, even though Pinder leads most of the vocals on this one. It;s still a good little song but I wanted to hear more. John's rocking bassline is excellent as is Graeme's accompanying drum beat. Love ya Lodgie!

Rounding out my favorites on OTTOAD: Mike Pinder's 'Have You Heard/ The Voyage'(I consider the two to be one song). I will freely admit that I am not a huge Pinder fan, but I HAVE to give the man his much-deserved props. This is, bar none, his best song EVER and it is an absolute pleasure for me to listen to it. The man has a way with words, not to mention his unsurpassed skills on every keyboard instrument known to mankind. He will forever be the Mellotron king. His voice ain't altogether half bad either. What I appreciate the most about this song is that fact that ALL of the Moodies awesome skills and talents as musicians are on pristine display here. I have only seen one "live" (it was a video, sadly) performance of HYH/TV and it quite frankly blew me away, just in seeing how passionately and ferevently the guys played their respective instruments. Oh man, what I wouldn't give to have seen this live "back in the day". If God would grant me the opportunity to go back in time to see only ONE vintage Moodies performance, it would be this song! Graeme Edge's often overlooked drum work is an absolute marvel to see and hear. Ray's flute solos have never been played with such understated zeal. Pinder is so very passionate on the piano and organ, or is it just the Mellotron? Regardless, the man has never sounded better. John's very dirty, low-down, funky, hard-driving (did I use enough adjectives?) bass work is just stellar, especially when played in unison with Edge's drum- truly a treat for the senses! The guys make me tired just watching them play, at what is at times, a frenetic pace. Can you tell that I dearly love this song?!

In closing I'd like to say that this is an album that the Moody Blues can and should be VERY proud of. It is truly a masterpiece created by the minds, hands and voices of five incredible men who are all living legends and supremely talented at their craft. If you don't already have it, get it- TODAY!

Another Stellar Performance.......2007-04-15

I rate this as my third favorite Moody Blues album behind In Search Of The Lost Chord and Seventh Sojourn . Are You Sitting Comfortably ? is my second favorite Moody Blues song . The first half of the album has some of the most pop oriented songs that the band ever did in it's second incarnation . The last 4 cuts must be listened to as a single piece . This is the first of the "art rock" bands and they were paving the way for the rest of them . It's amazing to think that they were able to get noticed at all by the general public in an era when radio stations refused to play ANY songs that ran over 3 minutes in length . This album is a facinating part of history and should be in every Moody Blues fan's collection.

The Title Says it All!.......2007-04-15

This is another Moody Blues masterpiece. it ranks in my eyes right by their ultimate achievement: "To our Children's Children's Children."

Few in my generation have not experienced the magic of this album. Every song on it is gold, and the continuity between the songs is perfect. The blending of classic orchestral instruments and rock and roll instruments is perfection. Every ballad is a work of beauty.

To feel good being seranaded by harmonizing voices blended with rich sonic tapestries is the delight of the Moody Blues that will never become outdated.

Stunningly good remaster.......2007-02-16

I used to listen to this and other Moody Blues albums on both vinyl and 8-track endlessly in. I *finally* got around to getting the CDs recently and the remaster of this album is STUNNING. I'm always a bit afraid of remastering because often the mix changes to suit the engineers or the artists as they think "it should have been". My opinion of this remaster is that it's a beautiful technology update that doesn't disturb the original music from the 1960's. The master tapes must have been in great shape, this is nearly flawless.

If you liked the Moody Blues back then, the remasters will blow you away.

On the Threshold of a Masterpiece.......2007-01-30

good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

the good songs are very good.......2007-06-26

I really like this CD. The songs that are not so good (in my opinion) are still tolerable. The very good ones are just that...outstanding. I am biased because I really like the show and the music really adds to the on-screen events. I do think that you probably need to be a fan of the show to like most of the music on this CD...

Fits the Mood of the Show.......2007-06-16

Judged on its own, this would probably get a 3-star rating. Rated by knowing the show, it should get 5 stars, but the last track is worth a demotion of one star (it's that bad). Most music must be enjoyed according to your mood, and this CD gives one an eerie feeling, almost depressing, but the beauty of it keeps it above the depressive level. Like the series, there's a chill to the overall tone with just enough hope in there to emulate the series to perfection.

Aye, the opening song (the best cut) is WAY too short: I thought like the Geico theme song, "Remind Me," there was surely a longer version. Still even at just over a minute, it's worth buying. Very moody, but very worth listening to!

Not bad for a TV soundtrack.......2007-06-02

I've bought a few TV soundtracks over the years and have sometimes been dissatisfied by them. I rarely remember the selections as being used in the series, The 4400 is no exception but at least it seems to have a nice sound to it.
About all that really stood out for me was the theme song, #1 "A Place in Time" (really the only reason I even bought the CD) and I think I remember #11 "Salvation" being used at some point. The rest of the selections don't mean much to me but they're a good fit and if you like one you'll probably like most of the rest. The worst piece was #12, the instrumental version of the theme- instrumental adaptations rarely work well and this was no exception.

Another great TV soundtrack........2007-05-10

I'm not really into this show but I bought the CD due to the track listing and it's a real good surprise even if I already knew a couple of it:
1) A place in time : apparently the show's theme,nice but a little too short. 4/5
2) This is your life : oh my god! masterpiece! love the band and this one is one of their best by far. 5/5
3) falling by the wayside : really good follow up to this is your life. 5/5
4) into the fire : the same .5/5
5) worry about you : a changing a tone but for the best.It's one of my favorite band and fav song. 5/5
6) how do you say goodbye? : on the verge of into the fire and falling by the wayside. 4,5/5
7) she will be loved : masterpiece but doesn't fit at all with the rest of the CD exept maybe the newt one,shy baby. 5/5
8) shy baby : great discovery on the CD and a great song with a beautiful voice,all little folk to chill. 5/5
9) do the buildings and cops make you smile?: normal follow up to the rest of the songs. 5/5
10) cheek to cheek: same as she will be loved exept that we can't relate it to any other song from the CD.4/5
11) salvation : not a fan of the show so don't really care about this one but it's nice,way to short but nice. 3/5
12) a place in time: another score which is a remix of the theme song.Should have been sang. 3/5
If you're a fan of the show,well buy it cause it's really good,if not,buy it anyway,it's a really good CD,trust me.

THe only reason this cd u should buy is that eminem and 50 are on it. Every body else are awful. 50cent GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGUnit!
without these two this c d would totalyy suck.GO by the massacre by 50 cent and encore by eminem , know those are classics!

Don't Have It But Pretty Good CD.......2004-09-25

Here are my ratings of the songs they chose:

1. Crazy In Love- Beyonce ft. Jay-Z- B. They played this song too much and i never really liked it but i still listen to it. it has a good beat.
2. Where is the love?- Black eyed peas ft. justin timberlake- A. Really loved this song when it first came out. It's so positive. played out though.
3. Clocks- Coldplay- F. Never listened to this song.
4. Lose Yourself- Eminem- A. Really great song from Em. Good lyrics/beats but played out.
5. Work It- Missy Elliott- B. Played way too much but pretty good when it first came out.
6. Going Under- Evanescence- F. Don't like Evanescence for some reason.
7. The Way You Move- Outkast ft. Sleepy Brown- A-. Really great song with good beat when first came out now played out.
8. Cry Me A River- Justin Timberlake- A. Great song from him. He sings good in it.
9. Beautiful- Christina Aguilera- A. Beautiful song from her. Great video.
10. I'm With You- Avril Lavigne- A. Great song from her. One of her bests in my opinion.
11. Dance With My Father- Luther Vandross- C. A little too soft for me but beautiful words.

Album Description

The Moody Blues abandoned the Oriental and Indian influences from their prior album in favor of more traditional Western melody, as well as science fiction and religious imagery. Similarly, the sitars and tables disappear, replaced by much heavier use of the Mellotron and the grand piano, among other Western instruments. Both keyboards come to the fore in the album's centerpiece, 'Have You Heard/The Voyage', a Mike Pinder tour de force and a wonderful piece of progressive psychedelia. Polydor. 2006.

I had all seven albums (on vinyl)and played them to death... at last I have them back again, in their original form! 30 years just fell away!

Quite Pleased With the New SACD Mix.......2007-03-19

I have listened to this album in every format (vinyl, cassette, 8-track, 80's CD/1997 Remaster/SACD) and I have to say that I am impressed with this latest mix. It sounds beefier, crisper and some songs seem just a hair longer in the refrains & sequed sections. The vocals really sound smooth, especially on "Dear Diary" where you can practically hear the air from the leslie cabinets. The extra tracks are nice and I always wanted to hear "The Voyage" all by itself & after 30 years of playing this album, I finally can. I thank the boys at Threshold for this special gift (how did they know what I was thinking?).

The cover art is a little softer & faded, but who cares?! I still have the LP, cassette, previously released CD versions and a bloody concert t-shirt of this album cover from a 1993 concert in Buffalo (Melody Fair). I've more than studied the friggin' artwork of this album. Anyhoo, I think this latest release was a grand success and highly recommend it. I can't speak for SACD release of "Question Of Balance", but judging from the reviews, I'll probably just stick with the 1997 remaster.

The Dream.......2007-03-04

This is a fantastic album from the Moodies and the sound is excellent. This is one of the band's most dreamlike albums and can give you a contact buzz just listening to it. I love the fact that they've restored the album's original booklet and pictures as well as adding some cool bonus songs. This really is an album meant for surround sound. From the trippy In The Beginning, this album REALLY DOES take you on a voyage and every song is a must have. Everyone in the band contributes to this release and it's wonderful to hear the group mind at one of it's peaks. Truely one of the Moodies best.

Much better than expected.......2007-02-13

Despite being previously disappointed with the Question of Balance SACD I plunged forward with this one. I must say I like this one much better. I haven't really experienced the ear fatigue other reviewers have noted though there is no doubt that the reproduction here does have a more compressed sound and differs significantly from other versions such as the MFSL CD which I also have.

In this case I think different is actually better. I really enjoy the surround sound seperation on this one much more than The Question of Balance. Clarity is the key word here. I've never heard this CD sound so pristine. Having enjoyed this CD in other releases (and previously LP) for many years I appreciate the opportunity to hear it in a vastly different light.

The Intro to Lovely To See You just jumps out the speakers. Much more in your face than I've ever heard before. Other rocking tunes really benefit from the SACD sound as well. I noticed some of the songs are longer than the originals with introductions and endings expanded to what I presume was their full size. This alters the listening experience if you're comparing to the original, but I don't mind this as anyone buying and listening to this SACD should be someone interested in exploring this CD at a different level.

As for the weaknesses? Lack of bass response is once again the most significant limitation. There is no subwoofer channel as there wasn't on the Question of Balance either. I believe this comes from the fact these SACD mixes were created from the quadrophonic 4 channel mixes. Overall, for Moody Blues fanatics wishing to dig deeper into this brilliant record I do recommend it. The bonus tracks are interesting though not essential. Once again my Sony SACD player cannot play these bonus tracks which are not mixed in SACD. The player (as others have noted) considers the end of the SACD formatted songs as the end of the CD!

For more casual fans the remastered version from the late 90's should suffice. Because of the limitations discussed above I can't give it a 5 star though on content alone I think it would be. Is it the definitive, perfect reproduction of this Moody Blues masterpiece? I believe the answer is no. That said, its still an enjoyable variation on a great record.

To Dream.......2007-02-06

This is a good cd to listen too by sitting back, closing your eyes and perhaps day-dream as suggested in the cd title.
Even though I am not familiar with any of the cd's tracks I was impressed with the music. The surround sound was excellent, with clear and crisp instruments and voices well distributed in varying quantities at different times between the front, back and side speakers. (I have setup my audio system as a 9.1).

The only negative is that the audio is only 5.0, not 5.1. Also, only the first 13 out of 22 tracks use the 5.0 surround sound.

I would recommend this SACD to non-Moody Blues fanatics.

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

Simply Greg Brown's Best.......2006-02-13

Many of us think this is Greg Brown's best album. Reasonable minds can differ, of course, but they have to get around the extraordinary imagery of the title cut, the plaintive story sketched in "Laughing River" and the deceptively simple melody line of "Spring Wind."

Songs of love and disappointment, hope and loss, as well as the messy business of life. Never self-pitying, brutally honest, with melodies that can sear the lyrics into your mind.

Greg Brown doesn't have any bad albums. But some are a little better than the rest. And this is simply the cream of the crop. My very highest recommendation.

Ah, I love this guy! Brown's voice can go from back-of-the-bar room gravely to plaintative soprano... The music goes from folky to country to bluesy and is always great. The imagery in his songs are fantastic too -- some creepy rural themes, like the soundtrack to an Andrew Wyeth painting (ie. "Sleeper".) The song "Dream Cafe" makes me feel like I'm in an open air restaurant in Arizona... Which is odd because I've never been to Arizona... Case in point, this guy can do imagery...

Greg lets his finest come to your ears...........2003-01-04

If you are familiar with Greg Brown, you probably are familiar with this release. If you don't have it, get it and treat yourself to an experience that take you on a journey of loves lost and loves to come. For those who are curious about Greg's work, this is an excellent place to start. There is not a bad cut here, and in particular, "Dream Cafe", "Spring Wind" and "Laughing River" are a trio of songs that somehow work some sort of magic into allowing me to see into life a bit deeper for a period of time. Two other releases that go along well with this are "Further In" and "The Poet Game."

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices
