4 out of 5 stars Young jazz fiddler just out of the gates.......2006-09-06

Aaron Weinstein was still a teenager when he recorded this CD in 2005. He's an excellent jazz violinist, still cutting his teeth, but able to swing and improvise like a pro. His youth and inexperience are probably reflected most in the slower ballad numbers like A HANDFUL OF STARS where he sticks pretty close to the melody. He can tear apart up-tempo numbers, though, and IF DREAMS COME TRUE is a real roof-raiser. Bucky and John Pizzarelli offer solid support, and what a treat (and learning experience) it must have been to have Houston Person guest on tenor sax on a few numbers. Will Weinstein be the heir apparent to Stephane Grappelli? With continued dedication to his instrument and the art form - and a little bit of luck - Weinstein should become a well-known performer on swing-oriented CDs and concert/club appearances. All the best to him.

5 out of 5 stars Aaron has his own unique style..........2006-05-21

Aaron can be compared to Grapelli and Venuti but there really is not need to compare since he is unique in his very own style. The After You've Gone number with slow and then quick tempos reminded me of old, old memories of Al Jolson. The Swingin' in the Rockies is so delightful in its violin harmonies that I am going to use it on my website. And the Pennies from Heaven number is wonderful to hear again and again and again like so many gently spring and summer showers. I also got a giggle out of the bass and violin pickin'! This is a five star album that goes into my favorite five collection.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD.......2006-03-26

A jazz fan's dream CD - excellent selections and masterfully played. A definite high recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful jazz c.d........2006-02-23

Not only does Aaron Weinstein make the violin swing on this c.d. but the company he keeps is amazing: Houston Person, Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Joe Ascione. Nat Hentoff says it best in his Wall Street Journal article, "This session should bring renewed interest in the often overlooked heritage of the jazz violin while heralding the advent of an unmistakably personal improviser who can be intimately tender as well as so fierily invigorating that you have to move to his music."

4 out of 5 stars Immaculate solo piano.......2001-02-18

Dave McKenna is one of the most consistent of pianists--his run of discs for the Concord label is of invariably high quality. Most of them are solo discs, & this is no exception; as usual with McKenna, his fondness for theme-based albums (this one, as the title indicates, includes only tunes with the word "star" in the title) works out for the best, prompting a mixture of classic chestnuts like "Lost in the Stars" & "Stella by Starlight", & little-played tunes like "Count Every Star" and "Swinging on a Star".

This is one of McKenna's gentler discs, perhaps a touch too dreamy; his hard-swinging side comes out only occasionally. But it gives the listener a good chance to hear his beautifully warm & thoughtful ballad-playing. McKenna is so unflashy that the casual listener may miss the amazing technical skill on display, in his ability to unfussily shift melody and chording between hands (& digits). His sense of swing is rock-steady, so much so that he is one of the few pianists with whom a drummer or bassist would be a distraction.

This isn't perhaps quite McKenna's finest work--I like the near-contemporaneous disc _Shadows and Dream_ a tad better, I think (sure enough, it's a collection of tunes with "shadow" and "dream" in their titles). But it still is more than worthwhile. Concord's Maybeck Recital Hall series sometimes suggests that contemporary jazz solo piano is too full of flash & complexity; McKenna's approach cuts out all the fat: it's about as close to purity as modern jazz gets.

3 out of 5 stars I like, like this cd more, more than any other by D.M........2001-02-16

I guess i'm in the minority with this opinion, but this is by far the best cd that I have ever heard from Dave Mckenna. It is a very exciting cd. It has already become my favorite cd by Dave.

On this cd Dave plays a lot of my favorite songs. He uses great control to not mess up these songs. He does improvise a little, but not to any extreme. He gives most of the songs a nice taste.

You jazz fans out there, listen up. This cd is one that you will cherish. Please give this cd a chance.

Recommendation: Buy this cd and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Handful of magic Miller.......2006-05-09

You can't beat the Glenn Miller Orchestra live over the airwaves. This disc takes you back to a time (late 1940) when you'd listen to your entertainment center, a.k.a. radio. Great atmosphere, fun verbal banter, good sound quality (even better than some studio recordings) and a great selection of rare and classic tunes. Like the "Return to the Cafe Rouge" disc, bassist Trigger Albert really cooks and raises the level of the band a notch. The underrated Ray Eberles in excellent form and the cute blonde Marion Hutton sounds in fine form. Enjoy!

PS: One day, I hope to see a "radio broadcasts" box set of the great Glenn Miller Orchestra 1938/1942. There is so much to choose from, it would be a shame if the major record company fails to come through. Wouldn't it be lovely to have every song included in the box set, not every performance, but every song performed over the airwaves, it could easily be well over a hundred. Why there must be at least a couple dozen versions of "In The Mood" to choose from. All the classics like you've never heard them, different arrangements, extended solos and many times the radio performances were superior. A lot of the radio broadcasts created better sound quality. Then, there are all those great numbers that were never "officially" recorded, classics like, The Gentleman Needs A Shave, Georgia On My Mind, Hold Tight, The Jumpin Jive, Rockin Chair, When Paw Was Courtin Maw, The Jersey Bounce and list goes on and on. A real treasure is waiting for us Glenn Miller fans. But who has got the map?
