Charlie Christian was dead of TB at 25, but his impact on modern jazz in general and electric guitarists in particular is incalculable. Yet another southwestern musician who came under the spell of tenor innovator Lester Young, Christian also learned valuable lessons from arranger/trombonist/electric guitarist Eddie Durham--who recorded the first six-string electric solo on Basie's "Time Out" and taught Christian the value of downstrokes. Christian's horn-like phrasing style and genius for setting up repeated rhythmic figures (known as riffs) anticipated the bebop revolution to come--and was a major influence on Thelonious Monk and Wes Montgomery. As a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet, Christian brought a renewed sense of swing and blues authority to the clarinetist's combo, where on numbers such as "Seven Come Eleven" he set everything in motion with only a few well-placed notes. His invigorating brand of tension and release reaches its rhythmic apex on his big band feature "Solo Flight" and an all-star bash with Goodman, Basie, Cootie Williams, and Jo Jones on "Breakfast Feud" and "I Found A New Baby." --Chip Stern

4 out of 5 stars Great to hear the genius play..........2003-08-28

Charlie Christian is one of the fathers of the electrical guitar. I'd never heard much of his music before I bought this CD. I'd heard some of the stuff he did with the big bands, but that was about it. I wasn't disappointed with this one. Surprisingly, the quality is excellent. I don't think the cover photo does Charlie justice. I've always heard that he was a great solo guitar player, but a horrible dresser.

5 out of 5 stars You Jazz Types Need To Loosen Up.......2003-06-19

I like my Coltrane and Mingus and Monk too, but Jiminey H. Crowe, you can't give this stuff just 3 starts! This is Charlie Christian sneaking in the back door of the biggest stage available in popular music at the time and hi-jacking American culture from the facile and the banal back to solid musicianship, compelling (while seemingly effortless) syncopation, an expanded tonal palate without sacrificing a steady blues sensibility. It's not just complexity that bakes the biscuit. Complexity alone makes the girls yawn and go home. Here Charlie invigorates the blues while rocking the cradle of the Swing Era, rock guitar, and BeBop all at once, and even the great Benny gets taken to school. Three stars? Wake up!

3 out of 5 stars Let us see............2001-04-04

Charlie Christian is an outstanding guitar player. His guitar playing is cutting edge and very modern. However, this record does not give you the full picture of his genius. This record is the most available Christian record, and if you go to the right shop, you can probably find it for a preety good price. So anyone interested in Christian should pick it up by all means. There are some great highlights on this disc, i.e. Air Mail Special, Solo Flight, and Waiting for Benny. Plus you get to hear some incredible Cootie Williams trumpet solos (man he is hot, see Air Mail Special, woo wee). Overall, you do begin to get an idea of Christian's genius. However, if you really want to experience the man at work, you should check out some of his "after hours at Minton's" stuff. Such as the "Immortal Charlie Christian". This record not only documents Charlie at his best, but you get to take part in the some very early BeBop. Alongside Dizzy and Monk, you get this all star band going at it the way they want. So, "The Genius of the Electric Guitar" is a good record to start off with, of course, but please check out other Christian stuff. You will not be sorry you did.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Christian fue el primero.......2001-03-13

3 out of 5 stars Genius guitarist, not sure about the album.......2000-11-13

Charlie Christian was an innovator of Hendrixoid stature. He invented electric guitar improvisation, by virtue of realising that the fuller, richer sound of the amplified guitar was suited to a new kind of music. His influence on bebop has been confirmed; while he wasn't especially ambitious harmonically, he did have a supple and daring sense of rhythm that provoked people like Thelonious Monk (with whom Christian jammed) to make some of the most creative and fascinating music of our time.

A shame, then, that this is his most readily available testament. While the performances are all good, this is Christian in relatively restrained form, taking short solos on record dates with Benny Goodman (who ripped off many of Christian's phrases and turned them into credit without crediting their inventor), and Christian is better heard live. His invention was formidable, and I have a French live CD in which he solos without flagging for minutes on end. He was a genius, all right, but CBS can do better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Great Material!.......2007-02-21

Charlie Christian (1916-1941) was one of the leading jazz guitarists of his generation, comparable to other greats such as Eddie Lang, Django Reinhardt or Joe Venuti. Before Christian's untimely death in 1941 at the age of 26, his career really only lasted through the years of 1939 and 1941; this disc contains music ranging throughout this period. This is a nice sampling with excellent sound quality and musicianship.

TRACKS 1 and 2: "The Benny Goodman Sextet" recorded on October 2, 1939 and November 22, 1939 with the following personnel: Charlie Christian (electric guitar), Benny Goodman (clarinet), Lionel Hampton (vibes), Fletcher Henderson (piano), Artie Bernstein (bass) and Nick Fatool (drums).

TRACKS 3 and 4: Recorded on February 7, 1940 with the following personnel: Charlie Christian (electric guitar), Benny Goodman (clarinet), Lionel Hampton (vibes), Count Basie (piano), Artie Bernstein (bass) and Nick Fatool (drums).

TRACK 5 is the same though with Johnny Guarnieri replacing Count Basie on piano.

TRACK 6 is the same though with Dudley Brooks replacing Johnny Guarnieri on piano.

TRACKS 7 to 10: Recorded on November 7, 1940 with the following personnel: Charlie Christian (electric guitar), Cootie Williams (trumpet), Benny Goodman (clarinet), Georgie Auld (tenor sax), Count Basie (piano), Artie Bernstein (bass) and Harry Jaeger (drums).

TRACKS 11 and 12 are the same though with Jo Jones replacing Harry Jaeger on drums.

TRACK 13: "Benny Goodman and His Orchestra" recorded on March 4, 1941 with the following personnel: Charlie Christian (electric guitar), Alec Fila - Irving Goodman - Jimmy Maxwell - Cootie Williams (trumpets), Benny Goodman (clarinet), Cutty Cutshall - Lou McGarity (trombones), Gus Bivona - Skippy Martin (alto sax), Georgie Auld - Pete Mondello (tenor sax), Bob Snyder (baritone sax), Johnny Guarnieri (piano), Artie Bernstein (bass) and Dave Tough (drums).

TRACKS 14 to 16: Recorded on March 13, 1941 with the following personnel: Charlie Christian (electric guitar), Cootie Williams (trumpet on 15 and 16 only), Benny Goodman (16 only), Georgie Auld (tenor sax), Johnny Guarnieri (piano), Artie Bernstein (bass) and Dave Tough (drums).

TRACKS 17 to 19: Recorded live at Minton's Playhouse in May of 1941 with the following personnel: Charlie Christian (electric guitar), Joe Guy (trumpet), Don Byas (tenor sax), Kenny Kersey (piano), Nick Fenton (bass), Kenny Clarke (drums).

Once a musician's influence becomes widespread and absorbed, it's often a good idea to step back and remember how revolutionary their work was in its day. Charlie Christian's role as a forefather of the electric guitar was forged not just because he was among the first to use the then-new technology in the late '30s, but also because of his playing. He understood that an electric guitar is a different creature than an acoustic, and he explored this difference with fearless aplomb during his tragically short life (he died in 1942 at the age of 25).

This four-disc set is a powerful celebration of Christian's legacy. As a young man playing alongside some of the giants of his day, he held his own. His fluid lines became part of basic and continuing language of the electric guitar, setting the stage for everyone from Les Paul to Jimi Hendrix. Beautifully mastered, the 98 tracks here include 17 previously unreleased performances (and another 27 never previously issued in the U.S.). Lovingly compiled, this is an essential title, not just for a jazz fan, but for any fan of the electric guitar--it all traces back to Charlie Christian. --David Greenberger

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential, although I absolutely agree with the packaging critique.......2005-11-20

I am a jazz guitarist, music salesman, and record collector. So, I was obviously excited when I heard about this reissue. Charlie Christian is arguably the most important jazz guitarist of all time, and he was certainly the first great electric guitarist (regardless of genre).

Sadly, I must say that I agree that the packaging is miserable. As previous reviewers have complained, some of the cds skipped as a result of the blemishes caused by the foam packaging. My solution was to purchase a cheap ($12) cd cleaner (all of the blemishes were superficial and not permanent). I also tore out the foam (which is glued in) and put the cds on blank trays, which fit conveniently in the "amp" (Note: Should you choose to do this, you will have to remove the tray from the rest of the jewel case).

Its such a shame that Columbia packaged the set this way, because it is such a wonderful and important release. The remastering is truly remarkable, stunning in fact. Comparing these discs to the single cds which Columbia first issued close to 20 years ago, one hears so much detail. For example, there is a clarient obbligati from Benny Goodman in "Six Appeal" which is inaudible on the single cd. Definetly an essential purchase, just beware of the packaging.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Guitar.......2005-04-07

Any guitar player must have this, period. This is one of the first electric guitarist, and yet, this is as good as the electric guitar can get. Charlie Christian is a titan, not only for the guitar but for jazz in general. Be-bop? Just listen to this guy and you'll understand the connection bewteen the old swing jazz and the new thing that was coming. Charlie knew it all along. The alterante takes are also essential, like Bird alternate takes, each one has a different solo and must be heard and compared and studied to get an idea of the genious of this man. The packaging, while beautiful is stupid, you need to take your CDs into jewel cases to prevent damage. But all is forgiven for the amazing sound quality, breathtaking. All stars, five star release!!

1 out of 5 stars Greasy Foam Packaging.......2005-03-16

All previous reviewers who trashed the packaging are right. Not only is it highly incovenient but it actually leaves a greasy film on the surface of the CD that is in the foam. Needless to say I was very dissapointed when I got home, unwrapped the brand new (expensive) box set, placed the first CD in my CD player and it immediately started skipping. When I removed the CD I noticed that an entire section of the CD had a greasy / stickly film on it. I surmised this was from the foam and verified this assumption by check the other CDs, and they all had the same problem. This was not a coating of dusty or something easily cleaned. Amazingly poor package design. I work for a medical device company and our packaging is subjected to extensive testing any time we change it to make sure it will withstand vibration, shock, drop, aging and the extremes of temperature the devices might be used in. You would think that, while it need not be as extensive for CD packaging, they would do similar work before launching entirely new packaging for a CD box set. Utter crap. Someone should lose their job for this one.

2 out of 5 stars Not really "Good Enough To Keep!".......2004-11-16

The 4 CD mini Gibson Amp 'box-set'leaves off genuine off vinyl 78, and Lp 'harder-to-get' Charlie Christian/Benny Goodman recordings. Legacy states "MASTER TAKES", but absolutely fails to research deep into Charlie Christian's recording history.
Columbia vinyl 2Lp 30779, (1972), and Columbia 78rpm C -102 along with the Columbia "Sextet" Cds leave legacy far behind.
The Wang Wang Blues -78rpm isn't in the 4CD set, and there are far too many 'false-starts', which Benny Goodman discarded for a good reason. Star Dust is only about 3 minutes, it's 8 minutes on vinyl. There is even In-studio handclapping after some tunes.
I have the 78s, many Col. Lps, and there is no "Studio-Live" takes. This 4 CD box could have, and should have been much better in information, content and genuine Charlie Christian guitar stylings. The 2 readily available BG Sextet Cds are a better purchase idea, but there are still those super hard-to-get vinyl Lp tracks, which ARE "The Master Takes", left Off the legacy/Sony box set. Musicologist's suggestion, try to get the vinyl Lps. Skip this misleading 4 CD set of various tracks, + handclapping = NOT "Good Enough To Keep", (AirMail Special).
Try the 2 Benny Goodman/Charlie Christian Columbia CDs, Amazon has both, and most of the Benny Goodman Sextet 'takes' are Master Takes, and "Good Enough To Keep!"
