About the Artist
Born in Philadelphia on July 22, 1953, Jimmy Bruno was first exposed to music by his parents at a very early age. His mother was a singer and his father, Jimmy Bruno, Sr., was a notable jazz guitarist who was best known for his performance in 1959 on the hit recording "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" with Frank Virtue and the Virtues. When Bruno was about eight his childhood love for music began to develop when his father brought home what would be Jimmyâs first guitar. As a child, he never had any formal training, but instead absorbed the life altering sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, John Coltrane and Oscar Peterson.
In 1973, when Bruno was just nineteen, he landed his first big gig when Buddy Rich came to Philly holding auditions for a guitarist. He spent the next year on the road with Buddy, receiving quite a musical education. When he returned to Philadelphia in 1974, he found few gigs as a jazz musician and decided to try his luck playing in Las Vegas, finally settling in Los Angeles as a studio musician. In the end it wasnât the place or the music he loved. Since his return to Philly in 1988, Jimmy Bruno has created a name that is synonymous with jazz guitar, recording numerous albums for Concord Records and now for Mel Bay Records.
In addition to his new album with Mel Bay Records, Jimmy Bruno has recently been featured in three, live concert DVDs released through Mel Bay Records - Jimmy Bruno: Live at Chrisâ Café, Volumes 1 and 2 and Jimmy Bruno and Jack Wilkins: Live at The Theatre. Jimmy is also a Mel Bay author who to date has written several instructional books for six and seven string jazz guitar. Jimmy Bruno is co-chair of the Jazz Guitar Department at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA and is a featured writer for Just Jazz Guitar Magazine.
Product Description
One would be hard pressed to find another jazz guitarist so polished, sought-after and committed to the music that he loves. From his earliest days, Jimmy Bruno has loved and been loved by jazz. With his unmistakable presence and inspiring virtuosity, great pride, Mel Bay Records releases Jimmy Brunoâs new album, SOLO, on Guitar Sessions, a label dedicated to cutting-edge jazz guitar.
SOLO is nothing but Jimmy Bruno, literally. Jimmy arranged this compilation of originals and jazz standards for solo jazz guitar, presenting the listener with the opportunity to hear and enjoy every note. Whether itâs the dynamic swing of Bennyâs Tune or the romantic familiarity of Satin Doll, Jimmy Bruno digs in deep and demonstrates true mastery of his instrument.

Album Description
The debut solo release from the lead vocalist/primary songwriter of The Rainmakers.
"The Beginner," features Bob Walkenhorst paring down his signature elemental song arrangements to a skeletal acoustic guitar, bass, and drums, most often played by his one-man-band. Harmonica is the lead instrument of choice on this release with the notable exception of a honking sax solo on "Jan Vermeer," and a lead guitar solo on the "J-Walkers." Vocal harmonies appear on only one song, "Just Leaving." From the sparse instrumentation to the early-60's style extreme-stereo production, the overall sound of "The Beginner" is as much about what has NOT been recorded, as it is about what you do hear.
The humor and irony that have been the trademarks of Walkenhorst's songwriting in The Rainmakers are abundant on "The Beginner." However, rather than being applied to social and political subjects, Walkenhorst's new songs are about more universal themes of love, work, patriotism, age, and escape. The dense opinionated word avalanche of his Rainmakers songs has been refined and reduced to choice phrases, delivered with a lighter touch and a stronger sense of melody.
Like Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous," "The Beginner" is Bob Walkenhorst's love letter to rock n' roll. Echoes of garage bands learning Beatles songs, lonely boys in rooms with acoustic guitars, two minute blasts of youth coming from a blown car-radio speaker, are caught in an over-the-shoulder backwards glance at, not only where he has been, but where he is coming from.
Customer Reviews:
great singer/songwriter.......2005-02-17
Bob Walkenhorst is a wonderfully talented singer/songwriter/musician. The songs on this album tend to be personal, introspectively looking at the self rather than looking outward and commenting on the world. Musically, it's somewhat reminicent of the Beatles. A great album, and a worthy addition to the music collection of anyone who appreciates a good singer/songwriters.
The Beginner - Bob Walkenhorst.......2004-12-08
I saw Bob play two hours one evening in the bookstore coffeeshop and fell in love with him and his music all over again. This is music you can listen to all night long, over and over - not one song misses. Look a little deeper past the music to the lyrics and you hear the story of a haunted man ... this music is destined to become classic. Bob, I don't think it will take until 2300.
If only they knew..........2004-10-20
I've always told people unfamiliar with this man that if you looked up "Rock and Roll" in the dictionary, it would read, "See Rainmakers."
Bob strips it down on "The Beginner" with songs you'll just have to hear.
He might be 60 before receiving the respect and appreciation he deserves, but we can wait.
Go buy it.
The best undiscovered songwriter in America.......2004-08-29
Walkenhorst has the best introspective, witty, and enjoyable lyrics in the last 15 years. Forget Dylan, Springsteen, Joel--the ex-frontman for the underrated Rainmakers plays trump card after trump card, carrying the narrative with his unique voice and style. Very easy to recommend "The Beginner". The songs are fun, thoughtful, and rhythmic.
Great Tunes and Lyrics - A Joy to Listen To.......2004-03-06
It doesn't seem to matter whether he records with the Rainmakers or solo, Walkenhorst continues to make some of the most intelligent and enjoyable rock around. "Just Leaving" is the real album highlight -- one of those great tuneful anthems with savvy lyrics. The only problem with the song is that it's only two minutes long. But it's one of those tunes you love immediately, kind of like Joe Grushecky's "Chain Smoking" on his amazing "American Babylon" CD. As rave up as "Just Leaving" is, "The Day We Hung Up The Flag" is one of the most touching (and tuneful) patriotic songs for peace in recent years. Every song on the CD is excellent in terms of artisty. Whether or not you'll like a particular song depends on your individual taste. But I defy anybody not to like those two songs.

From the country hoedown stomp of "Lunchtime at Rosie's" to the childlike whimsy of "Rocking Horse," Adrian Legg's second Red House Records release is sure to please fans of this wonderfully dexterous acoustic guitarist. While nearly every song showcases his unbelievably quick, fluid finger playing, Legg never sacrifices melody to virtuosity. On songs such as "Shorelines" and "Cradle Songs," Legg establishes tranquil, even hypnotic atmospheres that serve as perfect counterpoints to his uptempo material. On "Tiddles," a little comedic discourse about a cat's unfortunate encounter with the neighbor's dog, Legg puts the guitar down as he tells us of the cat's sad demise ("Finally the whiff of his decomposition made plain his condition..."). A special bonus for those with CD-ROM drives: Legg includes a selection of his photographs to illustrate each song. --Percy Keegan
Customer Reviews:
A little bit different.......2001-01-02
I agree with the other reviews. Adrian Legg is a real artist, and one who really deserves to be called artist. On this cd he mixes in some american influences, where Eric Johnson helped him, adds a poem, and kind of surprise song. While perhaps not the best place to start with Adrian Legg, a very enjoyable listen. And for me a very welcome variation of his other cds. Again 3 strong stars, which in my rating system means VERY good.
Another excellent selection from the guitarist of the decade.......1999-05-18
Adrian Legg has done it again! From the opening of "Lunchtime at Rosie's" (featuring Eric Johnson) to the closing of "Mdrundgum", Guitarist magazine's "Guitarist of the Decade" takes us on a journey through a range of styles and moods. Two years after the release of his previous Red House CD "Waiting for a Dancer", Legg has chosen to deliver a more textured album including some percussion, keyboards, bass and subtle vocals. There's also a poem "Tiddles", and a multimedia track "Shorelines" which will give you a set of shoreline pictures to showcase Legg's photographic talent. Guitarists will also be particularly interested in "Hymn for Jaco" and "(Pace Doc)", both of which are featured in his new Homespun video, "How to Cheat at Guitar". There's something for everyone here, and Adrian Legg should make many new friends this time around as well as pleasing his existing fan base.

Customer Reviews:
GrownUpMusic.com recommended!.......2004-12-09
Sally Fingerett is an amazing guitar player, pianist and mom who writes songs about things that matter. Her latest, "A Woman's Gotta Do Her Thing" is a career retrospective worth owning. While her signature "Home Is Where the Heart Is" continues to be her calling card, this CD will inform fans that Sally as just as funny as she is poignant. Sally is a founding member of The Four Bitchin' Babes, 4 moms with guitars and a wicked collective sense of humor.
Inside Your Heart.......2004-05-05
Sally Fingerett is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Her songs are graced with humor, grounded in humility, and boast memorable melodies and superb musicianship. This collection of songs covering her solo career as well as her time with the 4 Bitchin' Babes' work is a joyful journey. Her most memorable song is probably "Home Is Where the Heart Is" about a mother explaining to her daughter about gay people and touching on the tragedy of AIDS, "Home is where the heart is, no matter how the heart lives, inside your heart where love is, that's where you have to make yourself at home." Peter, Paul & Mary have covered the tune. This version was recorded live in Columbus, Ohio. It's a breathtaking song that extols tolerance and respect, the kind that makes a career.
The title track is apparently dedicated to her mother, "When I find myself in a bad bad mood, I'm puffy, I'm pissy ... If you're like me, go on a shopping spree!" Sally's sense of humor comes through on the great chatty live intro to "It's Been Said" where she tells about slaving over spaghetti sauce only to have her husband improve it by adding hot dogs. When she tells it, it's hilarious.
Janis Ian joins Sally for a duet on sentimental acoustic "Little Girl Please Wait." One of my favorites is "When I Wake Up from this Night" with its bouncy beat and great percussion that sounds like whip snaps and boxes popping. "Wild Berries" is one of Sally's oldest songs, written 22 years ago. Its gorgeous stately melody graces a lyric about picking up a hitchhiker & stands the test of time. "Whatever We Did" with Tom Martin on flutes is another addictive melody with a bouncy beat that remembers life on Chicago's south side. "The Return" has Sally's lovely piano front & center with another classic melody. The set concludes with Sally's previously unreleased version of Peggy Seeger's great feminist anthem about gender discrimination, "I Wanna Be An Engineer."
This collection covers the many different moods of Sally Fingerett, from the melodic acoustic gorgeous melodies to stunning toe tappers to joyful humor. This is an excellent set by one of my favorite artists. Enjoy!
