4 out of 5 stars The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11

The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13

Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-07-07

Just a great collection from Erik Satie. I would highly recommend this one!

3 out of 5 stars Richard review of Best of Satie.......2005-09-02

The recording is well done. Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate. I like his music and this particular recording.

5 out of 5 stars Got Satie?.......2005-07-27

... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.

Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.

Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

It's simple: in his various realizations of the piano music of Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini set a standard that has yet to be bettered. This compilation, drawn from recordings made between 1966 and 1971, is consequently the best of the best. Ciccolini always played Satie's music as though it had been written by Claude Debussy, not by some cheap charlatan or uneducated primitive (which, to an extent that is still debatable, Satie was). The result is that these seemingly simple piano pieces acquire a tonal allure that is as surprising as it is undeniable. They possess an understated sophistication that points directly toward Ravel and Poulenc, at the same time providing an opening to the minimalist aesthetic of the later 20th century. Ciccolini's playing is pliant and graceful, and under his fingers the music seems to breathe and come alive. What more could a composer or a listener want? --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Picasso in sound.......2006-02-19

Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie were drinking buddies; it shouldn't be surprising that their work, though in different media, should bear striking similarities. This CD set replaces a very badly abused vinyl recording from the 1960s. No one plays Satie like Aldo Ciccolini. I do wish the Parade had been included, Satie wrote the music, Cocteau the libretto and Picasso did the sets and costumes-Satie's only ballet. Of course, the circa 1910 audience walked out. It's the story of an out-of-work ballet company that goes out onto the streets of Paris to try to get customers to come inside. The customers are stereotypes like the American in a cowboy outfit who adds the sound of this six gun to the music and the secretary who types through the encounter. The back wall of the theater was covered with Picasso designed neon signs flashing in bright colors throughout the performance. Across the front of the stage he'd strung acetate on which were playing street scenes of Paris from three cameras-red, blue and green. The men were way, way ahead of their times.

5 out of 5 stars Great but NOT complete.......2004-12-23

Please note that this collection does NOT contain Erik Satie's complete works for piano. The collection makes no such claim, but at 5 CDs, some may assume it to be complete and none of the other reviews to date mention this. I am too lazy to do the research to come up with a complete list, but offhand I know that these songs are missing - "Je Te Veux", "Fantaisie-Valse" and "Valse-Ballet". These 3 are among my favorite Satie pieces, so yes, I think the collection is diminished somewhat by their absence.

Aldo Ciccolini always has been the greatest interpreter of Satie's work for piano. Ciccolini has a feel for Satie that no one else does, although I have to admit that I prefer a faster tempo to "Poudre D'Or" than the slower, introspective tempo Ciccolini always uses, but that's only a small matter of personal preference. These recordings were originally made in 1967 and 1971 and the sound quality is excellent. At the dawn of the CD era at various sessions from 1983-1986, Ciccolini recorded Satie's complete works for piano on EMI on 5 CDs. They are currently out of print in America, with the exception of one compilation CD (also available at Amazon at the time of writing) with Gabriel Tacchino playing the 2nd piano on the pieces for 2 pianos. Ciccolini was overdubbed playing the 2nd piano on the original recordings in this review. I have a slight preference for the later recordings, but many seem to prefer these originals. You can't go wrong with these, just understand that they are not complete and the missing songs are among Satie's best.

5 out of 5 stars There's only one........2004-06-26

If you're reading this, you've already heard Satie's music, so I needn't to go into that. I do want to say that this is the only recording of Satie that is worth hearing. Ciccolini is the only foot that will fit the Satie glass slipper. Don't waste your money on the ugly step-sisters.

4 out of 5 stars Don't forget Satie was an Anti-Romantic.......2002-02-25

No one could deny that setting every disperse music in a unique album is a remarkable job. But I didn't like much the approach of Ciccolini, which I knew around 1975 while getting borrowed the vinyl LPs in the Embassy of France in Buenos Aires. Now I'd like to explain to whom it may concern why do I feel that way.
Satie was an anti-romantic composer, at the point of creating the "furniture-music" (musique d'ameublement) which refuses that music could be so expressive as romantics wanted. Other ones clasifies him as a "Surrealist" composer (anti-romantic movement too), but there are no signs of dreams of unconsciousness through his work. Since that point of view you could play Satie's music anyway but expressively. Satie wasn't Debussy, besides the fact that they knew personally and admire each other. Could you play Debussy in a plain style without damage?. I don't think so, because Satie was farther of expressive tradition than Debussy: we can say that Debussy is a spirit of the XIX Century while Satie is a precursor of the XXth. Remember his own words: "I came to the world too young in a time too old".
The best performance I heard of the piano work of our composer was in charge of Jacques Fevrier on the excelent album called "Monsieur Erik Satie", with such a "sideman" as another member of the group of six as Georges Auric for the 4 hands pieces.
I wave goodbye with a great embrace to all Satie's fans.

5 out of 5 stars "Electric Spirit of Eric Satie" fans this is the one !.......2001-08-17

Fans of "The Electronic Spirit of Eric Satie" will immediately recognize Aldo Ciccolini as one of the few musicians in touch with the true "Satie" style. The selections correspond to "Electric Spirit" ; except, performed as a good piano solo. The piano recording is done so well it's better than most orchestral versions. It sounds very much like "Electric Spirit" without orchestration nor electronic "boops" and "beeps"-- just a good piano. It's really just as funny and powerful; and here it has a class act. This performance is a rare find !

Aldo Ciccolini's late-1960s survey devoted to Erik Satie's piano music helped spawn new interest in the idiosyncratic French composer. The pianist rerecorded the cycle digitally, and it is from these remakes that the present reissue stems. While the performances are refreshingly pert, stylish, and perceptive, the rather glassy, treble-heavy engineering can't hold a candle to EMI's warmer analog sound for the earlier recordings. Be that as it may, this disc covers a spectrum of Satie's creative moods (to say nothing of his bizarre titles), from the pensive Gymnopédies, Gnossiennes, and Nocturnes to the upbeat irony inherent in the character pieces. Gabriel Tacchino joins Ciccolini for a balletic romp through La belle excentrique. Happily, this duo will have none of the fussy rubato with which a handful of world-class pianists distort Trois Morceaux en forme de poire. If warm, rounded piano sound is not an issue, then this disc will do just fine as your basic Satie starter kit. --Jed Distler

3 out of 5 stars Great Performance, disappointing listening experience.......2007-05-06

The performance of all of the pieces on this disk are exceptional, and the recording of the piano itself is well done. Unfortunately, both are almost irreparably marred by a loud recording hiss throughout the performances. The fact that this hiss fades to zero between sets only serves to highlight the hiss and make it distracting again. I am stunned that this disk advertises itself as a DDD recording, the engineers and producers should be ashamed. If you know how to process hiss out of a recording, go for it. Otherwise, be warned, you may be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Great Performance, not so great quality recording.......2006-01-19

I think that the interpretation of Satie's work here is really good, but my complain is that the recording has a lot of noise in it, is not just the noise of a life performance (which I don't mind), but there is a clear white noise in the background that spoils the overall effect. Still, as I said the interpretation is just great, but the noise issue forces me to give a 3 start rating.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Introduction to Satie's Piano Music.......2004-05-29

I must confess my ignorance with respect to Satie and his music, so this fine CD was a revelation. Satie clearly falls in the same group of "Impressionist" composers such as Debussy, but still remains an enigmatic figure, in part because of the satirical content of his music, as well as his personality. In Aldo Ciccolini, Satie had one of his foremost champions. This CD is replete with graceful, lyrical playing of Satie's works. I am truly surprised that Satie was neglected until the 1960's, when Ciccolini began championing his music. The sound quality isn't nearly as warm as earlier EMI analogue recordings, but this isn't a major disappointment in what is otherwise a splendid introduction to Satie's music.

5 out of 5 stars Be transported.......2006-12-25

In my opinion, the Jacques Loussier Trio is best at interpreting classic Impressionist masterworks.
"Satie: Gymnopedies/Gnossiennes" is haunting and atmospheric musical poetry and, I think, superior to their other attempts at integrating classical and jazz into one musical statement. The entire CD reminds me of the musical equivalent of J.M.W. Turner's Venetian watercolours. Stunning! Also, check out "JLT Plays Debussy".

Jacques Loussier Trio's "Satie" takes the listener on a trip. Gnossienne No. 4 is especially effective in transporting the listener to a quiet "cinema noir" oasis full of intrigue. This jazz trio's technique lends itself much better to interpretations of delicate impressionist masterworks rather than to classic baroque. This is NOT smooth jazz but each piece is "fluid" or "atmospheric", just as Satie would have wanted it! The haunting sound is perfect- translucent as any mountain lake. In my opinion, this is Loussier's best disc and rates as one of the top discs in the classical-jazz hybrid genre, "Third Stream".

5 out of 5 stars Satie with a Twist!.......2006-01-11

I have long considered Satie's Gnossienne to be some of the most emotionally touching and versatile pieces in music. So to pass a lazy afternoon, I went searching for as many versions of them as possible. I found everything from guitar to harp to dancefloor remixes. But there was one interpretation that stood out from all of them: the Jacques Loussier Trio interpretations.

First, I disagree vehemently with what one can only describe as the dense and snobbish two star review below. Satie's music is not degraded here; it is simply reinterpreted into a new genre. But my ears (nor those of any other reviewer, it seems) detect any degredation or "dumbing down" of Satie. Rather, the Loussier Trio handle Satie's delicate pieces with all the care they deserve. They do well at playing minimalistically, using no more notes than are necessary. I can't help but think that this is the way Satie would have wanted it, as his compositions cry out for exactly that style.

While there are a few question marks on the CD (for instance, trying to fit a 3/4 Gymnopedie into 4/4)even the weaker tracks (relatively speaking) are worth a good listen. The Gnossienne (particularly the first four) take the cake, though!

A brief descriptive note before I leave you to buy the CD. Any lover of the "new" European (particularly Nordic) jazz, such as the Esbjorn Svensson trio, or the Tord Gustavsen trio, will UNQUESTIONABLY love the Jacques Loussier trio. Loussier has mastered the type of sparse and dark sound achieved by the said trios.

You are in for a treat, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars A Win --- on many counts.......2004-04-03

My introduction to the Gymnopedies was hearing Blood Sweat and Tears rendition on their 2nd album. I've been entranced by them ever since. I've collected the purist renditions of the work, and then I heard the lead track of this CD on our local Jazz/NPR station, KPLU.

I was immediately obsessed with finding out who/what/where.

I did, and I purchased this disc and several others. I was not disappointed. Other writers here are far more eloquent than I about the musical content; suffice it to say that Loussier remains true to the mood and emotion of the original, and his improvizations on those themes brings a new and fresh point of view to these already beautiful works.

Last, I'll comment on a technical point. These recordings are stunning. Totally natural sounds, and a stunning mix. Everything is in its place, you hear everything. The SACD version is even better. The older recordings (like the original Bach) are not at all dated in their sound.

I applaud this artist, this work, and this recording. Few of my recent CD purchases have been this satisfying.

2 out of 5 stars Dumbing down Satie.......2004-01-12

Satie's Gymnopedies are beautiful and expressive works -- that have a distinctive sound. This interpretation dilutes Satie with "soft jazz" that is oh-so-familiar -- and not very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Loussier takes on Satie.......2000-09-12

It was this recording of Loussier playing the works of Satie that got me interested in this musician. Loussier's style lends itself well to Satie (perhaps even more so than Bach), and the music is very nice as a soft jazz CD.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Actually, 4 1/2 stars... Just shy of Perfection!.......2007-07-05

Exquisite' showcase: Hacketts' Satie. I'm giving this my 3rd listen so far
since purchasing today. It glows on you like a magical silk robe. Steve's
departure from Genesis was thought to be another* death knell for (what was
thought to be) the finest Prog. Rock group in history. John has been adding support to his more famous brother since the 1st solo project (more 'Genesis' than the band at the time). Satie's century-old compositions have been more than just a proving ground for classical musicians thru time and like many true strokes of genius, the piano works weren't thought to be 'music' at all by some of the most respected critics of the day. We have
the pleasure of recognizing it's beauty today, in this fine adaptation.
Steve was one of 2 great rock guitarists who began performing the electric
guitar w/ his band while sitting down in a chair (classically trained so).
The other guy is Robert Fripp (who's Crimson Kings have graduated to play
with S.H. on more recent prog. projects). Respected, is the word that is
often used to describe the subdued, previously nerdy Steve. Brother John's
flute is honed into an ethereal transport through space/time on this CD. If
you don't share it with a friend or lover, you're neither.

*Steve was the heart transplant for early Genesis. The next death knell in
that book was the departure of Gabriel.

4 out of 5 stars Satie for Guitar (and flute).......2006-10-06

Had the idea recently to transpose Satie (specifically the gymnopedie) for guitar, then found out that the Hackett Bros. have already done so. After reviewing samples, I'm a bit disappointed that they chose flute for some of the melodies -- was hoping for all guitar -- but these are very natural, warm adaptions, especially Pièces Froides No.2. Also see The Guitarist John Williams (name of the album) for more Satie on guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and hypnotic.......2004-01-10

"Sketches of Satie" is a collection of Erik Satie's compositions for piano, rearranged and performed by Steve Hackett (guitar) and his brother John (flute). The songs translate so well to flute and guitar, it's hard to believe they weren't originally composed for these instruments.

Fans of early Genesis won't be surprised by Hackett's virtuosity; the revelation here is John Hackett on flute. John's playing is so natural and fluent, it seems almost divinely inspired. On the first six tracks (Gnossiennes 3, 2 and 1 and Gymnopédies 3, 2 and 1), Steve provides subtle and steady accompaniment, allowing John's flute to handle the melodies. The next three tracks (the "Pièces Froides") highlight Steve on guitar, but John rejoins him for the rest of the album. The performances exhibit a hypnotic, haunting, and exotic beauty. Steve Hackett again demonstrates why he's one of the world's best and most versatile guitarists; by ceding the spotlight to his brother, he exhibits admirable modesty and restraint.

You don't have to be a fan of Satie or Hackett to enjoy this - just someone who enjoys gentle instrumental music that stimulates the mind while calming the soul.

5 out of 5 stars The classical side of Hackett.......2003-09-19

This is Steve Hackett at his classical best, along with the excellent flute-playing by his brother. The melodies are wonderful--perfect for when you want to relax and unwind. Other Steve Hackett albums in the classical vein are Bay Of Kings; Momentum; There Are Many Sides To The Night; and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

4 out of 5 stars Dont expect his old stuff , but..........2003-02-04

A nice cd to get up in the morning and still feel in a dreamy kinda mood for the next couple of hours...if you are looking for progressive stuff check his first 3 or 4 albums...and thats it! there is nothing more worth checking out...this has his acoustic gt sound and his bro is a nice flute player too, and of course , the music of Satie, which has inspired so many Prog groups, is also great, but still you can not really relate this to earlier works of his...nice anyways!

5 out of 5 stars Listen for hours.......2006-01-25

I don't listen to a *whole* lot of classical music, and pretty much no other solo piano than this. I bought this album years ago, and it is that rare music, where everything is good. As the other review notes, it's fine in the background. But whenever, and wherever, you tune in to it, pay attention to it, something good is going on. And: you can listen to it again next week, or next month, or next year, and find things you didn't find before. It's good piano music that doesn't have to be dazzlingly fast or difficult. And, Glazer touches the notes just right: more gently than you might have thought a piano note could be.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful.......2002-10-30

I first became acquainted with Satie when I found a transcription of Gymnopedie I in a guitar magazine. After years of playing it on classical guitar, I finally got a recording on piano, and was delighted to discover that, though few of the pieces match the haunting tone of Gymnopedie I, the rest of the music on the CD is of the same caliber. Great music to have going in the bckground, or to relax and listen to.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A Fine Satie..........2006-03-11

Difficult to beat Pascal Roge with Satie, but this disc is very fine indeed. Pair this disc with Roge's "After the Rain."

      Adequate faux-Magritte cover photo too!

      5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME SATIE.......2005-08-03

In no way, shape or form has Satie sounded so metaphysical, so ethereal; in no way, shape or form does the composer's mystical visions receive a more rapt personal approach. In the hands of pianist de Leeuw, the music simply doesn't get more intimate than this. Time stops; the melancholic simplicity embraces; the nurturing repetition--- tres lent---soothes mind, body and spirit. Not a note is out of joint, or misjudged. This is the deepest essence of Satie revealed in a performance so ideal in timing, so uncannily concentrated and distilled, so beautifully recorded, and so fully in accord, as to be, ultimately, perfect.
