Product Description
"Latitude" is the first in a trilogy of recordings for Thirsty Ear's Blue Series; an ongoing collaboration between Charlie Hunter and Bobby Previte, world class guitarist and drummer, respectively. Each album is enhanced with the addition of a different guest, making for a fresh and unique trio. This release features Greg Osby on alto sax. Osby's lyricism is morphed into countless shapes and colors, underpinned by Previte's use of electronic drums to trigger samples that intertwine with Hunter's endless rhythmic flow and funky melodicism. The result is a sound that speaks to jazz fans on both sides of the avant-garde/mainstream divide, as well as those who enjoy electronica or the jam-band scene.

Challenging without being obtuse, spacious without being spacey, Matt Flinner's second effort bridges the gap between melodic old-time music and structure-slicing "newgrass." One of the hottest mandolinists in contemporary acoustic music, Flinner composes both terse, elegant instrumentals--the title track, for example, has the wistful, timeless feel of a British Isle folk song--and open-ended, improvisational epics. On the five-minute "Sam I Am" (a sly wink at kindred spirit Sam Bush), Flinner and bassist Todd Phillips call and respond deftly, while Darol Anger saws some eerie, off-axis fiddle licks. Flinner clearly has his eye on the acoustic jazz ventures of David Grisman, but through his light, lyrical touch, as well as Stuart Duncan's impeccable fiddle and Jerry Douglas's razor-fine dobro, he endows much of Latitude with a distinct and often beguiling country feel. --Roy Kasten

better than the 1st 2.......2001-01-27
real quickly, i shall say that this is yet another fantastic product of flinner, grier, and phillips. in addition the listener is also given a healthy dose of stuart duncan and flux. as usual the tunes are all original. if you like either of the first ones, you have no other choicce than to love this one.
String Jazz Magic.......2001-01-25
Prepare to be impressed.
The foundation of this record, as with "The View From Here," Flinner's solo debut, is his fresh songwriting. Claiming influences as far a field as jazz great Miles Davis, Ireland's Bothy Band, and, yes, David Grisman, Flinner gins these into a coherent approach to crafting melodies and rhythms that not only captivate on their own, but provide a solid structure for the improvisational work that really makes this recording shine.
With talent like David Grier on guitar, Todd Phillips (Grisman's original second mandolin player for the David Grisman Quintet) on bass, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and Stuart Duncan and Darol Anger taking turns on fiddle, there's bound to be some fireworks. They do not disappoint. The licks are clean, creative, and varied. Phillips extends the voice of the bass beyond the expected. Grier stuns with his musical ideas. Flinner makes his mandolin sing, bark, chime and chirp. Duncan is solid throughout, and Anger is just plain spooky.
The dramatic shifts in dynamics and rhythm from song to song (and within pieces) may surprise listeners more accustomed to the steady barrage of sixteenth notes and the 2/4 thwack common to string music from string bands with bluegrass or old-time backgrounds. This record so defies that stereotype that it seems more fitting to give this label other than "newgrass." True, these musicians' experience draws from the rich traditions of American string music, but you really only need one word to describe this mix of creative songsmithing and masterful improvisation: jazz.
Where Miles would give you a nudge from somewhere within the pentatonic scale in a place you don't expect, Flinner gracefully fills the space with amazing mandolin tone. Where the Bothy Band didn't stray too far from traditional form in their approach to music, Flinner creates his own while tipping his hat to our music's Celtic ancestry. And where David Grisman relies on the pioneering ideas of Django Reinhart and the groovy forms of Caribbean and Brazilian jazz to guide much of his jazzier work, Flinner draws from bop and funk to drive his tunes.
I'm already looking forward to the third record ...

This is one of the BEST mixed discs of the year with a truly unique style - a mix of groovy house from Spain/Portugal to Africa to Brazil. Melodic and Happy - if you like the Cafe del Mar and Hotel Costes compilations you will like this as well - a bit more uptempo. Not as great as 40 Degrees, but still good.......2004-06-02
"Blue Curve" was released in 1996. The duo certainly doesn't miss a beat with the title track, of which, there are two versions. I enjoyed the first version with its hip beats. "Ida" & Altitude were also very soothing. The real highlight is the track, "Love or Fusion", which is nice and smooth to listen. There are a few tracks that were abstract in nature. "Miles Hi" was long and rather dull. Although this CD doesn't reach the height that "40 Degrees North" had in the past, "Blue Curve" is still good listening.

Spellbinding.......2005-06-28
If you love fascinating sonic textures, rhythms both catchy and elusive, and a playful yet controlled approach to song structure, there's a good chance you'll love this disc as much as I do. One reviewer calls this "avant-garde," but if that puts you in mind of the formless abandon of, say, Cecil Taylor, or the scronking wildness of Albert Ayler, you won't find that here. Every song has its own vocabulary of sound and rhythm, which Hunter, Previte, and Osby use as a framework for creative exploration--always with a groove holding everything together, sometimes upfront, sometimes subtle. Atmospheric, haunting, fun, pensive, inspiring, original, eminently listenable. If you prefer Charlie Hunter's more mainstream albums, this may not be your cup of tea, but if you were longing for something that was as wonderful as Bill Frisell's most creative work (without sounding a bit like Frisell), I highly recommend it.
Where is the groove?.......2005-01-05
I bought this album full of anticipation based on the incredible success of the Hunter/Previte duo album "Come in Red Dog, this is Tango leader." Red Dog/ Tango was just chock full of the funkiest grooves and incredible purcussion and I thought Latitude would be similar with a third party thrown into the mix.
Boy, was I wrong!
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a much more "loose" ensemble. The saxophone is very very free, almost random noodling. Charlie's parts are very spacey. It's a low key album with noodling rhythm-less saxophone in the background.
Like Red Dog, this is a "live" album (no overdubs, etc) of the musicians jamming together. To me, it sounds like a warm up or practice session where they are just getting to know each other. I want to come back in a week and hear what they can do once they get a feel for each other and start stomping the grooves out. This album was cut too soon.
Personally, I just don't like this album at all. Charlie is my favorite artist for many reasons, but first and foremost, he grooves. This album doesn't. At all. I can understand Charlie wanting to make an album like this, but I hope he got his fill and never makes another one in the same vein.
I love Charlie Hunter. This is the first album I regret having and I doubt I'll listen to it much. I highly recommend Come in Red Dog though. Perhaps his best.
Too weird for me.......2004-11-10
This album is billed as a meeting of Charlie Hunter and electronica guy Bobby Previte, with special guest on sax Greg Osby.
So I figured this would be typical grooving Charlie Hunter jams. Boy was I way off.
Beware that this album is very avant-garde and the songs never really materialize. It's just way too experiemental for my taste; it's almost hard to listen to.
I really expected better given Charlie Hunter's usually-solid CD's. I guess he's trying to do something different...
One down, two to go ..........2004-08-27
Latitude is the first album in a trilogy by Groundtruther, guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Bobby Previte's experimental new trio. Each album will feature a different rotating guest as the third member of the trio. For this session, that is saxophonist Greg Osby. Together these three conjure a sound world that is equal parts of their own making. Add Previte's electronic sampling drums to their usual arsenal of organic instruments, and you have a session as rhythmically varied as it is texturally complex.
Although acid jazz is a deservedly maligned term held over from the 1990's, there is a flirtation with that danceable vibe on this disc. But groove never overcomes the more exploratory side of the group's focus. Drum n' Bass and Jungle rhythms flirt with reverb laden guitar lines and swirling bop inflected alto sax lines. The pieces vary from slow burn to BPM crazy. Complemented by loops, vocal samples and electronic flourishes, the trio is as sonically dense as a group twice it's size. Fans of these three artists who are looking for something a bit more raw from their usual output will find much to love on this album.
It will be interesting to see how each new invited guest affects the overall sound of the group and where that takes them on their forthcoming releases: "Longitude," and "Altitude." No other label does modern electronic jazz cross-over as well as Thirsty Ear does and this album is one of their finest examples.
