Cuban-born pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's ninth Blue Note recording, Inner Voyage is an aptly titled affair. Throughout the album's nine tracks, which showcase his regular working trio of drummer Ignacio Berroa and bassist Jeff Chambers with fiery guest appearances by tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker on two tracks, Rubalcaba's vision is more introspective than on his previous release, Antiguo. But it's no less affecting and in fact may be Rubalcaba's most heartfelt playing to date. Featuring a mix of tunes penned by Rubalcaba and standards like "Here's That Rainy Day" and "Caravan," the music on Inner Voyage is meant to evoke various figures in the pianist's life, from his daughter ("Yolando Anas") and two sons ("Joan" and "Joao") to Blue Note Records head Bruce Lundvall ("Blues Lundvall"). Listeners who expect a thrilling ride of Afro-Cuban rhythms all the way through may be surprised, since unlike Chucho Valdés and the elder Cuban piano statesman Rubén Gonzáles, Rubalcaba doesn't wear his Cuban influence on his sleeve. In fact, most of the disc finds him treading delicately on Bill Evans territory, and it's not even until the charged rendition of "Caravan" that Rubalcaba lets some wondrously jagged piano montunos bubble to the surface. --Ezra Gale

Cristal Silence III.......2002-03-21
The first cut is GREAT for a yoga class -- the louder the better. That cut also sounds great played outside.
In a word: Sublime.......2001-04-10
Few artists in the new age music genre can soothe the soul in such a gentle, lovely and deeply entrancing way. With each album Robert Haig Coxon continues to astonish and delight with his ability to create what one may call pure sonic "brain candy".
The mix is superb and the album song progression is both logical and evocative in the sense of enabling the ability to flow from one thought/feeling to the next without interruption of the meditative continuum. It is easy to understand why therapists use Coxon's music for body work and other forms of physical therapy.
In my practice as a professional hypnotherapist I have found this CD to be incomparable as background music for trance induction and transport into the deepest realm of the unconscious mind. It is a pleasure to recommend this exquisite, refined, soothing and healing music for those who wish to experience the sublime on many levels.
One of my ALL TIME favorites.......2001-02-22
When I got this CD, I was living in Montreal, and was only really beginning to discover Canadian ambient/New Age music. At that time, Robert Haig Coxon was a professor at the University of Montreal, and a friend recommended that I have a listen to this CD. I was skeptical for fear that the music would be really "academic" sounding. It is not! This is the best of the four releases available from Mr. Coxon. It is almost like a subliminal symphony of musical harmonies that fill all those sound receptors in your mind. I really, really like this CD and am currently on my third copy. I use the music as the theme song for an "adult alternative" music program on Public Radio on Alaska, and once a year I play it all the way through for the first hour of the program. It never fails that folks call in to find out more about the music. As a side note, Steve Roach is credited as a collaborator on this CD, which may help to account for the pureness of the synthesizers. I know that Mr. Coxon provides the clarity of the musical thought.
A major gift to the music world.......2000-01-12
Coxon has a compelling understanding of how music gets into our inner beings. I find all of his discs absolutely compelling and most days will find me listening to one all the way through first thing in the morning. Coxon is a credit to his craft.
Amazing CD every time I listen to it! Well worth the wait!.......1999-11-18
This CD came across me by mistake and it is absolutely beautiful. This music is perfect for performing in any kind of mind/body ritual. The music flows so naturally it is often hard grasp the concept of time. Robert Haig Coxon is brilliant!

Not Inspired, Not memorable.......2003-04-15
Gonzalo is a fantastic pianist. This CD however is meant to capture his more thoughtful and sensitive side. However, it is languid and the tunes don't stand out. It is hard to tell if track 2 is really track 4 as the plodding bass and minimalist approach on piano make for sleepy moments - if driving later in the day. I have heard him with fire and brimstone and sometimes it goes over the edge of taste. But it is exciting. Not here. There is barely a hint of any Cuban influence in this music as well. Now some will like the gentleness I suppose, but with weak material and not much diversity, it sits pretty flat with me.
Gonzalo's "Inner Voyage".......2003-01-29
I tend to agree with the reviewer who mentioned that most of the compositions meandered somewhat.
It seemed as though Gonzalo was thinking more along the lines of color than content.
And will someone PLEASE tell Michael Brecker enough with the Coltrane imitation!...Get back to playing your sax!
"Inner Voyage" is a great listen if you need to unwind.
kind of a boring voyage.......2002-12-09
This cd really deserves three stars...I'm giving it two to bring down the average. I hate to condemn any kind of music, and that certainly isn't my goal in writing this review, I'm simply trying to express my opinion. Gonzalo Rubalcaba is inarguably a masterful technician and a creative and wonderful musician. I found some of the compositions featured on this disc very beautiful. Yet on almost every track the music lacks energy and excitement; perhaps this difficult music was exciting for the performers to record, but it is very boring to listen to. Yolanda Anas has a beautiful melody, yet all throughout the performance the players seems to be meandering. Caravan has a very exciting beginning, but seems to drag on forever without direction. The two tracks with Brecker are interesting, jarring and dissonant, but largely unpleasant.
As a whole I think that this music would work much better in performance than on record. I think that for a trio piano recording, the music needs to somehow grab and hold the listener's attention. Whenever I listen to this my mind can't help but go elsewhere.
On the other hand, this is virtuosic playing, and the group is obviously well rehearsed and tight. Furthermore, the sound is in many ways original (although strong influences shine through at some parts, like Bill Evans). Nevertheless, this is one of my least favorite cds. If you'd like an example of what I consider an amazing piano trio album, try Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas or Ahmad Jamal's Live at the Pershing. Those are my favorites.
What else can I say?.......2002-07-25
His playing on this album reminds me of that of Bill Evans. I am glad to see on reading all the reviews that someone else had that exact thought. Comparison to Bill Evans is the best compliment I know how to give.
5 stars for a thoughtful work.......2001-05-09
This is Rubalcaba's most mature work. It's deeply introspective and lacks the bravura and pyrotechnics of earlier recordings. As a result, it's much more satisfying.
Rubalcaba's selections for this CD are also distinct from other Cuban pianists: there is little that is inherently Cuban about them. In this sense, he is not an exponent of Cuban jazz, but of jazz without the usual national labels. In addition, his classical formation gives the music an interesting formality that pokes through here and there.
A very pleasant, very thoughtful, and joyous collection.
