Because Thelonious Monk's artistic vision was so personal and peculiar, hearing him in a solo setting is perhaps the best way to begin to understand him. This 1957 album was his first to consist of exclusively solo material. His lines are fractured, his ideas are deliberate, his mood is introspective, and the end result is an album of both stunning beauty and jarring surprise, often at once. "'Round Midnight," his most famous composition, is boiled down to its very core (the CD reissue includes a revelatory 22 minutes of "'Round Midnight" outtakes, ideas, and development). The finale "Monk's Mood" is a fragile ballad that eventually adds color from tenor John Coltrane and bassist Wilbur Ware--the only spot on the record with accompaniment. Taken from a 1982 concert film, this CD contains several solid routines by the veteran comedian. Most of these portrayals are humorous takes on family life. Cosby gives special attention to the messiness and frustrations of child rearing. His caricatures of domestic situations reveal a sharp eye for telling details that most listeners will recognize. Cosby pens the material himself and it's tightly written stuff, indeed. "The Dentist" perfectly captures the humiliation and absurdity of a visit to the tooth doctor. "Chocolate Cake for Breakfast" might be the only flop here. The comic's drawn-out performance is heavy-handed and everything gets a little too spelled-out. But for the most part this disc features Cosby in good form. The man is the embodiment of All-American humor and this album reflects that. --Fred Cisterna
Customer Reviews:
Dad is Great! Feeds us chocolate cake!.......2007-05-22
Great comedy by Bill Cosby, great material and clean, which is hard to find something that is so side splitenly (is that a word?) funny and yet you can listen to it with anyone and won't feel weird. CD is a little short and leaves you wanting more (around 40 minutes of material) But it's worth it to hear the chocolate cake story.. you'll be singing along with the kids... dad is great... gives us chocolate cake.. great great great!
Cosby at his best.......2005-09-26
This is a very short CD, but has some of Cosby's best material. There are not many comedy recordings that you can enjoy with the whole family, this is one of them. It's great that my 9-year-old son thinks it's funny too!
3rd generation now laughing .......2005-07-30
My brother and I used to listen to Bill Cosby records on our partents' Hi-Fi, and we laughed til we cried. When I talk with my own kids I often make references to "Brain Damage" or "The Chicken Heart" or "Lombard Street", and they don't know what I'm talking about...you know the weird look they give you, "whatever mom". So I bought the CDs of all of Cosby's early skits and now THEY'RE quoting "Noah" and singing their own go-cart songs. In a time when I have to check every video game, CD and book for parental warning lables, these CDs present a wonderful opportunity for me to connect with my kids in a family friendly environment. The topics are as fresh and timely as they were in the 60's and I can count on Bill to keep it rated G. I recommend you purchase a couple or all of the CDs and have a good laugh with a generation that doesn't even know what a record is. Have fun!
The quintessential Bill Cosby comedy album.......2004-08-29
I still have vivid memories of being a kid and watching Bill Cosby do his The Dentist sketch on a show called Solid Gold. It was easily the funniest thing I had ever heard in my life, and I went around telling everyone just how hilarious Bill Cosby was. At the time, I only knew Cosby from his Picture Pages segments on Captain Kangaroo and the Fat Albert cartoons, and I actually felt like some type of visionary when a little television vehicle called The Cosby Show debuted soon thereafter based to a large degree on the comedy you will find on this album (and the longer video from which these tracks were taken). A few of the skits in this performance were translated almost directly to the screen in the show's first few episodes.
Bill Cosby, Himself video is hilarious; I still laugh every time I listen to it, no matter how many times I've heard the routines. There was a time when I practically had The Dentist memorized. Cosby's humor resonates so well with audiences because he is describing and joking about things we all know and understand to some degree. He doesn't need to use foul language or tell dirty jokes in order to reach his audience. He just comes in and starts talking about the humorous things in life.
The comic material on Bill Cosby, Himself, deals primarily with family life - marriage, children, etc. He makes the birth of his first child a hilarious journey into the delivery room, explains that parents lose a lot of their intellect as they age because of the frustrating brain damage that afflicts all of their children, explains how differently his parents treat his own children compared to the way they treated him, and describes quite vividly some of the antics of his own five children over the years.
Bill Cosby knows people, and he knows what will make them laugh; he is also one of the greatest storytellers in the world. He is at his funniest here, and I really can't imagine there is anyone out there who would not enjoy listening to Bill Cosby, Himself. If you loved The Cosby Show, you will definitely love this album.
Silly Bill Cosby is heard but of course, not seen.......2004-03-12
This album is an edited audio version of the motion picture "Bill Cosby Himself", I don't have the CD but I do have the LP with the original cover photo. This album was recorded live in Ontario,Canada like the motion picture. Some of the dialogue is different from what's heard in the movie. For example,at the end of track 6 of the CD,SAME THING HAPPENS EVERY NIGHT which the second track on side 2 of the LP,Cosby says,"This woman(his wife Camille) graduated from college." That line is not heard in the film. Obviously, that was an outtake. Also on the fifth track of the CD and the first on side 2 of the LP,CHOCOLATE CAKE FOR BREAKFAST,the opening line is "My wife woke me up six o'clock in the morning." In the film he said "four". So he mentioned "six" in another performance that was either not recorded or recorded but not used. See the VHS version of this title for the details of all seven routines. This album is on the Motown label, which originally had a black clientele. Cosby first recorded on Warner Bros. in 1963 when his show business career began. In or around 1970,he was dropped by WB,and from then on recorded on Tetragammaton,a label which he co-owned,the defunct Uni,Capitol,Motown and Geffen.

Phenomenal!.......2007-06-26
I was first introduced to Hoobastank by my wife who had heard "The Reason" on the radio. I bought The Reason for her but I became an instant fan. I read some bad reviews about Every Man for Himself (obviously by losers) and like a fool, I listened. After nearly wearing out The Reason, I decided to take a chance and get EMFH. This is by far the best music I have ever heard. There are so many flavors in the music on this CD that it leaves me completely satisfied. As much as I love The Reason, I love EMFH even more. It's almost like they were in my head when they wrote the songs; I can relate to every song. EMFH has proven that Hoobastank has talent way beyond what most bands even dream about. The lyrics are powerful, the music is powerful. This CD is absolutely at the top of my list of favorites.
Different Style, Still Same Hoobastank.......2007-05-17
Initially, I was disappointed with this album. But, all it took was some time (about a week) for it to grow on me. Now, I think EMFH is totally awesome! "Born To Lead" and "Inside Of You" are my favorite songs, but the rest are also really sweet.
I highly recommend that you get the two bonus tracks "Finally Awake" and "Waiting", because they add another level of greatness to the album.
EMFH differs from the first two albums in musical style, but if you give it a chance, then you'll come to enjoy all that THIS album has to offer.
reeks.......2007-04-14
Another good rock band killed by a lame ballad (hello, The Reason). In short, let me sum up my review of their newest album in three simple words:
it totally blows.
Big Disappointment.......2007-04-11
I was extremely excited to get this CD in since their self titled album was good and the Reason album was outstanding. This album strays away from the Hoobastank sound that people love. The songs are much calmer and slower, they don't contain as much quality guitar playing. The last track, "More than a memory" is a big letdown because the last track from The Reason, "Disappear" is probably Hoobastank's best song and I was hoping the same would be the case in this CD. It seems like Hoobastank has lost their energy and sound in this CD. Hopefully they realized this and go back to their original sound for their next CD.
still kickin' a little @$$.......2007-02-15
I saw them live on Guam and they tore it up.
The song "inside of you" is an instant favorite of mine. I play it over and over again while I dance around my living room in my underwear.

Worse than the other two... but it's still pretty decent.......2007-05-07
I used to listen to the Self Titled and The Reason album all the time, but for this album i can't stand some of the songs like More than a Memory which is very boring. At first I thought this album was going to suck because If I Were you sucked and Born to Lead isn't very good either. Inside of You is alright though. The good songs on this album are First of Me, Moving Forward, First of Me, Good Enough, and If Only. I used to like all their songs which made Hoobastank one of my favorite bands i've ever listened to, but this album kinda disappoints me. It's like any other album I have now, I think i'm too generous to give it a 4... but hoobastank rocks so... yea...
They have a song called Face the Music on Myspace which is pretty good. I wanna get it but i can't find it anywhere...

The songs are much calmer and slower, they don't contain as much quality guitar playing. The last track, "More than a memory" is a big letdown because the last track from The Reason, "Dissappear" is probably Hoobastank's best song and I was hoping the same would be the case in this CD. It seems like Hoobastank has lost their energy and sound in this CD. Hopefully they realized this and go back to their original sound for their next CD.
It's okay.......2006-12-12
I like their new stuff way more than the old, and the album flows really nice, but I'm not the biggest Hoobatank fan. But honestly, I do like it, some of the tracks sound the same, but all in all, I'm not diappointed lol.
"The Reason" rock music is in the @#$% hole.......2006-11-12
Sorry guys, I loved Hoobastank ever since they first came out and up until this album...but let's face it...this is trash and the only people who give this more than 3 stars are probably obsessed fanatics who beat off every time they hear "the reason"...It's good bands like this making BAD albums like this that account for rock music being on the decline..or as I like to call it : IN THE S***HOLE!
Most excellent.......2006-07-16
Now I personaly liked The reason, and saddly havn't listened to the self tittled cd so I can't compare, but....
This one is awesome.
First off, since no one that I read reviews, mentioned inside of you. While it deffinatley isn't a little kids song, its deffinatley a song that shows a bit more truthfullness to the music, and the beat gave me an old Jamiriquai(sp) feeling.
Don't tell me, Never saw it comming, and the others were nothing short of good.
But the other two songs that stuck out in my mind were Born to lead and it's overreppeated courus, and the first of me, which actualy reminds me of Linkin park in some ways.
All in all a worthwhile buy.

Thelonious was a brilliant stylist.......2006-10-31
and he shows it with this set of standards. I don't enjoy the twenty-two minute Round Midnight track, though. Just because there's room on the CD doesn't mean it has to be filled in. Still, one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch. Buy this and enjoy.
A Journey into Introspection.......2000-11-25
I've owned this album for a number of years, yet I've probably only listened to it about 20 times. The music on this album is so powerful that repeated listenings can diminish the effect of the music, relegating it to mere background music. This is by no means background music. This is music to listen to when your soul needs refreshing. I'm very careful about when I choose to listen to this album. By listening to it only when I need it, the music becomes more beautiful, more serene, more replenishing with each listening. Buy it and listen to it as soon as you can, without distractions. Then put it away. Listen to it only when you need to. And you'll know when that is.
An Essential Jazz Record, An Essential Monk Record.......2000-08-27
Thelonious Monk created some of the most powerful music ever, regardless of genre. That power underscores an observation: I've never met a person who had a luke-warm or ho-hum opinion about his music. They either love it or hate it.
An artist that elicits that kind of a polarized response makes it hard for the curious. What if the newcomer picks up what is genuinely a bad record? Monk fans are rabid, but few. So if you don't have a Monk fan handy, how do you know what makes a good introduction to his music?
Conventional wisdom says to get "Straight, No Chaser" on Columbia. That IS a great place to start, especially with the remastering job Sony did in 1996. They made a perfect record even better.
The problem that I have with the conventional wisdom is that "Straight" only tells half the story. If you are new to jazz in general or Monk's music in particular, you should check this disc out. It is not only one of Monk's best, but it offers essential insight to jazz music as a whole.
While "Monk's Mood" (with John Coltrane and Wilbur Ware) alone is worth the price of admission, "Functional" and "All Alone" are sadly overlooked. The 22 minutes of Monk working out a solo version of "'Round Midnight," followed by the finished take are vital to understanding how Monk functioned as a composer and arranger. What comes through all the odd chords, phrasing, and tempos is some of the most organic (human) music I've ever heard.
To crib from the tray insert (Dom Cerulli, Down Beat): (five stars) Highly recommended.

Nothing can compare with Bernstein's own accounts of his music. The best recordings are still the ones he made with the New York Philharmonic for Columbia, when scores such as Candide and West Side Story were still "new" music. Originally produced by John McClure (and remixed by him for CD), these recordings of the Candide Overture and the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story have never been bettered, not even by Bernstein. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
What else? Definitive.......2005-09-11
Bernstein was the greatest conductor of Bernstein, and nothing has changed over the decades. This pressing of some classic performances comes from early digital remastering, I believe, and later remasterings remove some of the harshness and sketchiness of the sonics. Also, one has to be prepared for the huge orchestral forces that inflate this theater music, but even so, nothing matches these readings.
Jazzy stuff.......2000-06-10
This is all basically the music of Bernstein's Symphonic dances condensed into one little CD. Excellent CD considering its price where many other Westside story CD's go for 30 dollars or more. A definate buy.

Chad Mitchell Himself / Love a Feeling of
There are few great voices in the annals of American Music. Certainly there was Sinatra and Elvis, but one that has not been given his due because of his time and perceived idiom is Chad Mitchell. Mitchell, if known at all, is remembered as the main voice of the folk trio that bore his name in the early to mid sixties. The Mitchell Trio, with the able assistance of brilliant producer Milt Okum, recorded a number of excellent albums filled with witty social commentary. By 1965 Chad left the group to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by a young John Denver. This CD includes the first two of only four solo albums he has thus far recorded.
These two albums are flawless gems that never found an audience. Mitchell's voice is incredible and his interpretive skills are second to none as he does definitive renditions of an array of great songs including Tom Paxton's "The Other Side of this Life", "Over The Rainbow", Paul Simon's "Sign on a Subway Wall", "Dark as a Dungeon" and "Brother Can You Spare Me a Dime". His rendering of Eric Andersen's "Violets of Dawn" is three-demensional in its power, taking it to a level that only a handful of songs have ever achieved.
Folk Era Records should be highly commended for releasing these two albums. Hopefully they will also release his third album CHAD, which contains an enchanting version of "Follow". To round off their releases of unheralded classics I hope they also get the rights to the POZO SECO SINGERS masterpiece SHADES OF TIME.

Album Description
Originally formed in 1997 as an outlet for Alec K. Redfearn's songwriting, The Eyesores have developed into something far more twisted and epic. Every Man for Himself is the band's third release, and by far their best offering to date.
