I've always loved this one. Loved it then, loving it today. Some planets were aligned for this recording or something because, I don't know how it fared commercially, but the chemistry was strong. A nice combination of talents coming together at the right time and, I'm sure, a lot of work and preparation on Ronnie and Larry's part. Most of the tunes have Larry Dunn's synth and production sound all over them, and like a lot of other projects Dunn was involved with around this time, the sound was ahead of its time (this is what Jeff Lorber and Kenny G were trying to sound like, back in their early days). It's interesting to listen to Larry Dunn's side projects and things he was involved with, and then go back and listen to EW&F. It gives a new perspective to what he added to that band. Ronnie's probably at his best here. His soprano and tenor playing is very strong. He gets a wonderful tone on this recording. The band is all studio cats - and they're laying it down here like you seldom hear studio cats doing. Several tasty grooves!

Is Ronnie Laws' "Friends and Strangers." I remember many a night, listening to KUTE 102 when they would jam cuts from this CD. "Goodtime Ride," "Saturday Evening," "Nuthin from Nuthin" and "Life in Paradise" are my favorite jams, but the ultimate one is the title track, "Friends and Strangers." Ronnie makes his sax sing on that one and for me it was on my "summer soundtrack" for '77. It was during the Jazz Fusion era of the '70's that I became a Jazz fan. To me, just as fans point to the Cool era, or the Bop era as being significant, I feel the music created by Ronnie Laws, Hubert Laws, Donald Byrd, Stanley Clarke and others of this era, stands the test of time. This CD is an excellent introduction for those who want to know what I'm talking about. A GROOVING MASTERPIECE!

All i can say is this is one Funky/Jazz CD. GREAT, GREAT, I finally go it last week, and i can not stop palying it. The background singers (his sisters) Sound so good, while the music is playing. He can sing too! What a Great CD, get it if you can find it, it's worth whatever you have to pay.

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

The first 13 songs are a compilation of demos and pre-releases.
The remaining 8 songs are from 'friends and strangers' (thus the title).
There's quite a diversity of music. It ranges from live acoustic guitar and piano to studio sesions ranging in style from humor, to rockabilly, to Beach Boys and more.
The production quality is up to par (except for maybe the two live tracks), but listeners will be impressed with the diversity and find themselves whistling a tune or two after listening.
