Scofield meets Vai.......2007-07-05
This was my first Greg Howe, and I probably couldn't have picked a better starting point. Wooten and Chambers are both great musicians in their own right, and Howe gives them plenty to work with (and why isn't Dave Cook mentioned on the cover?!). Would've been a five, but the whole album has an apprehensive undertone, probably due to the fact that they recorded the parts separately (notice the "recorded at __'s home studio" in the leaflet, not to mention the pre-production drums). If these four were in the same room during recording, you would know it. Nevertheless, the songs are solid, just enough drive for rock and all the rambling solos of a good jazz artist. Maybe give Wooten a longer solo next time... Overall, certainly worth a listen.
My faves: Crack It Way Open, Lucky 7, A Delicacy
Buy this!.......2006-11-04
Greg Howe displays his mastery once again, although this time he brought two other monsters, in Chambers and Wooten, along with him. This is a great cd, a must for Greg Howe fans, or anyone else with a good sense for great music. You won't be disappointed if you buy this one!
Jazz Fusion!!.......2004-10-27
I'm sure most people know that Greg Howe was part of the Sharpnel record family. His solo Cds were flashy solo's and pretty hard rocking rythems. With this Cd though he completly blew me away. He gathered up the best line up I've heard in a long time. Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten. This Cd is just stunning. Very complex Jazz Fusion that is just mind blowing. The Alan Holdworth cover of Pronto Cosmos is also amazing. Greg Howe really shows off how talented he is on this record (not saying he wasn't talented). Greg is just showing us he can play other types of music like Jazz Fusion. I'd recommend to pick this one up if you are really into Jazz Fusion. I'd also recommend to pick up his records he did with Richie Kotzen, those are also very complex but more of a Jazz Rock Fusion style. This Cd is just straight up Jazz Fusion with many twists. This Cd is on the top of my list along with Tribal Tech and Cab. Deffinetly a must for Fusion fans.
I can't stop listening to this album.......2004-09-24
Firstly let me say that I had never heard Greg Howe before buying this album, so I have no basis of comparison to his other works. I love this album. I was especially pleased to find that Wooten actually PLAYS on this CD, rather than simply slapping up a meaningless storm as on some other releases (Vital Tech Tones springs to mind). I also have not heard the original verion of Pronto Cosmos, so I don't think it sucks like a few of the other reviewers have said.
I just can't get bored of this album. It rocks.
Wooten and Chambers on the same CD?!? Of course it rocks!
Masterpiece!!!!.......2004-05-16
A real masterpiece of jazz-fusion-rock music! We were used to listen to stunning and incredible Greg's acrobatic virtuosity, but here a real engine of groove by Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten makes this album a piece of art! Greg grew up his style, by adding a tasteful jazzy soloing to a funky comping. Simply great!!

Thrash at its Best.......2006-04-07
This album is one of the best thrash metal albums I have ever heard amongst both Christian and secular artists. It is a five star album in this genre, not of albums in general. The crunching guitars and quick timing changes are on a standard that few other bands ever acheive, let alone on a rookie release. They're talent only gets better in their next two releases, but they also lose some of the raw crunch of Extraction from Mortality. They sound like they have beem heavily influenced by German thrash bands like Destruction and Sodom.
An awesome Debut, but its not as good as Dimensions .......2006-03-01
NOTE: NOT TO BASH ONE OF THE REVIEWERS, BUT THIS IS NOT DEATH METAL. IT'S THRASH.
I basically just said it all. Extraction From Mortality is an awesome Thrash Metal album by the Christian band Believer. It's not their best. It seems to me that their albums just get better as they release them. Extraction From Mortality is more of an album you listen to just merely for entertainment as opposed to art. This is album is some-what technical as compared to their later stuff which is EXTREMELY technical with their complex riffs and odd time signatures. However, this album has my number 1 favorite song of Believer and could possibly be in my top 10 all time favorite songs. The song is called Shadow Of Death, which is also the very first song of believer that I have heard.
What is awesome about this album however is the production and the great crunch used in the guitars. Unfortunately, Kurt Bachman's vocals are a little annoying because they sometimes drag and they are not so aggressive. Still I love this album, but it's NOT my favorite Believer album. My favorite is still Dimensions.
Awesome.......2004-02-23
Believer is a Christian thrash metal band (not death metal as the previous reviewer below wrote). This was their first album, I believe (and best). No one sounds like them and no one ever will. Great thrash with a Christian message (even though I don't care about that) and a great roughly-melodic sound. I love the title track, Unity, Shadow of Death (the best). All songs are great though.
Check out Sanity Obscure, their second album, which was more creative and diverse, but perhaps less melodic overall, and not as technical (if thrash can be considered technical.
Great buy.
The definitive death metal album!.......2003-02-28
Extraction... is simply as good as death metal gets. The pace is full on, the vocals soaring, the drums hypnotic, and the guitar riffs take the skin off your face! There is attention to detail too, notably the introductions to songs like the string quartet before the title track hits you, and the organ intro to the opening song. ... One word of warning, don't buy any other Believer albums expecting the same standard coz after this stunning album they disappeared up their own .........

Customer Reviews:
Gary Wright with some muscle..........2007-04-15
One can't mention Gary Wright without thinking of Dream Weaver and there's no denying the strength of the song and of the subsequently impressive career that surprise hit launched. For those who find a stronger association with his previous band, Spooky Tooth, Extraction and Footprint are excellent companions to his finest efforts with that band. Both albums ring with echoes of Spooky Tooth's influence, bringing strong guitars and keyboards together in what are superb examples of early seventies rock. The lyrics tend to come off as a little mawkish and trite here and there, but the music more than makes up for it. If you're a fan of Spooky Tooth, consider this collection a must have. If you prefer the Dream Weaver era, this is still a good choice if you're curious about his origins and influences.
Get on the Wright road.......2006-01-22
Gary Wright, like Steve Miller and Peter Frampton, was a musical journeyman who just kept plugging away until he earned some well-deserved success in the mid-70's. But, his best work came well before "The Dreamweaver" was released, as you will hear when you listen to these two albums.
"Extraction" and "Footprint" are nearly cut from the same mold, they are so similar in structure and style, and they fit together seamlessly in this re-release. Wright was good at melding punchy uptempo rockers with reflective ballads. He featured a good deal of electric piano on these tunes, and partly as a result, the work is lighter and more buoyant than his work with Spooky Tooth.
Highlights include "Get On the Right Road", "I Know a Place", "The Wrong Time" and "Too Late to Cry" from "Extraction", and "Gimme The Good Earth", "Two-Faced Man", 'Whether It's Right or Wrong" and "Fascinating Things' from 'Footprint'. If you have some familiarity with the albums, you'll understand that I favor Wright's harder rocking tunes. 'I Know a Place" is a particularly special treat, showcasing Blodwyn Pig/Jethro Tull guitarist Mick Abrahams in a rare appearance as a sideman for another rocker.
"Footprint" is the more assured, mature record of the two. It features a really stellar cast of musicians, including George Harrison and Jim Gordon--check out the energy that Gordon adds to "Two-Faced Man", "Whether It's Right or Wrong" and "Fascinating Things". "Fascinating Things", an ominous track that blows in like a summer thunderstorm, also features Wright trading wicked licks (on organ) with the excellent guitarist Jerry Donahue (Fotheringay, Fairport Convention) who is still active and contributing to contemporary albums like Linda Thompson's 'Fashionably Late" .
"Two-Faced Man", featuring Harrison's slide guitar, deserved to be a hit . Wright and Harrison performed the song on the Dick Cavett show in 1972, and anyone wishing to view the footage should buy the Cavett 'Rock Stars' dvd which is now widely available.
Though Wright's "Extraction" and "Footprint' are dated somewhat in their themes of ecological and altruistic concerns, they still sound fresh musically, and this cd is remastered to bring out the best in the music.
Fans of Spooky Tooth, Wright's old band, should also check out bandmate Mike Harrison's albums, "Mike Harrison with Junkyard Angel", and "Smokestack Lightning'. Considering that the Spooky Tooth album, 'Last Puff' was largely a solo project for Harrison, a case can be made that he more than matched Wright's early efforts.
A lost treasure house of great tunes finally gets its due........2005-12-19
Gary Wright, former keyboardist/songwriter/vocalist for Spooky Tooth, released these two fine albums in succession after the initial breakup of the band, with `Extraction' coming out in 1971 and `Footprint' the next year. While critically acclaimed, they were not commercial successes at the time, in spite of the quality of the material. They now get a second chance, and fans of great rock music have reason to rejoice.
Wright formed a touring band in the wake of Spooky Tooth's demise, calling it `Wright's Wonderwheel' (which featured, among others, future Tooth and Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones). Most of that band played on 'Extraction', although the name Wonderwheel was not credited (however, they did release a single called 'I Know', and recorded an unreleased album). `Extraction' differed markedly from the trademark Spooky Tooth sound; the songs were generally more up-tempo, with more focus on lead guitar than the heavy organ sound of his previous band. In addition, the production was very bright and clean, with individual instruments very discreet and well separated. It was sonically impressive on vinyl back then , and remains even more so on CD today. Featuring some truly outstanding songs such as Get on the Right Road, I Know a Place, Too Late to Cry and his own, more rocking version of The Wrong Time, which was also covered on the Wright-less Spooky Tooth Album `The Last Puff'. To me, this and `Footprint' feature Gary's most powerful vocal performances, largely devoid of the falsetto often used in Spooky Tooth recordings.
`Footprint' is a real joy to have. `Extraction' was actually released the previous year on the Repertoire label, but until this two-for set, `Footprint' was something of the Holy Grail of Spooky Tooth related material still unavailable. While `Extraction' had minimal production gloss, with somewhat sparse instrumentation and a generally `hard rock' feel, `Footprint' went a different direction. Continuing with top-flight songs, superb vocals and lyrics that showed the emerging spiritualistic side of Gary, the recording featured many guest musicians, including George Harrison (under a pseudonym), Bobby Keys, Alan White, Jim Gordon and others. It was a more textured album in production values, with shimmering acoustic guitars augmenting the keyboards and electric instruments, more pensive lyrics and a kind of loose, thematic unity to the album not found on `Extraction'. This theme is represented in such titles as Give Me the Good Earth, Love to Survive, Fascinating Things and the anthem-like Stand for Our Rights, which featured what may have been the last sax performance from King Curtis before his untimely death. To this day, hearing that song makes me want to jump up with a clenched fist and start marching. A more powerful affirmation to the cause of personal freedom would be hard to find.
While these masterpieces should, by all rights, have been released long before now, the fact that they are now available for such a modest price is great news to fans of not only Spooky Tooth and progeny, but to fans of superb late 60s, early 70s rock music everywhere. Frequent and repeated listenings guaranteed!
It's about time..........2005-12-16
a paired reissue be available for these excellent albums, especially "Footprint", and BGO have done a great job with the remaster and packaging. Excellent songs, fantastic musicians backing, and now, great sound quality, we live in a fun age!

cult of sound.......2005-10-05
a good, but probably not essential entry in the Earth catalogue. nonetheless, a pretty great cd and a good chance to hear their beginnings. "Ouroboros Is Broken" is the standout cut here. a lumbering rumble of a good time.
An enjoyable listen..........2005-07-21
I like EARTH. I have for awhile now. This is an EP, and as such, it is pretty short. I haven't heard everything that they did in the past, but judging from what I know, this EP is like EARTH 2 junior. Not as monolithic and friggin' crazy as EARTH 2, but not as "poppy" as Pentastar. I enjoy Carlson's riffin. I guess that is all I have to say about it. If you enjoy the sonic stylings of EARTH, than why not buy this one too? I mean, come on. It is only 9 bucks or whatever. What the hell else would you do with that money? Spend it on fast food? Or maybe a couple packs of smokes? Buy the CD, and then take your Lim' Bizkut and Deftone CDs to the used store, sell them and then go buy your smokes. You are welcome.
Bear with me..........2005-06-22
It's the early 1990s, Smalltown USA. You're a 15-year-old kid whose knowledge of underground rock music doesn't extend much beyond bands represented in Kurt Cobain's t-shirt collection. You know about Sub Pop because they put out that first Nirvana album, and may have heard some mention about some sort of "Sonic Youth", but otherwise, you're pretty clueless. As you flip through the Nirvana section of this mysterious indie record store, hoping to find some new album or single that slipped beneath MTV's radar, you stumble upon this EP, packaged in a minimal cardboard slipcover, amidst all the frat boys' recently returned copies of "Nevermind".
"Post-Graduate Seminars: Eye Surgery - Concepts and Problems"
"Extra-Capsular Extraction".
Mhuuh?
Flip it over, and there's that vaguely familiar Sub Pop logo, a list of surgical equipment, and mug-shot photos of guys that look like they'd be much more comfortable working at the Exxon station than a hospital. Then, below "The Panel", in small boldface type: "With Specialists: KELLY CANARY & KURT KOBAIN".
Supposing you're me, perhaps you're thinking:
a) What the fsck is this?
b) Why does every Nirvana record spell Kurt's name differently?
c) What the fsck is this?
Overcome with confusion and some slight pangs of excitement, I shelled out the $6, rushed home, and... received no answers on a) and c). Everyone I played it for thought it was a particularly stupid joke. But I kept listening, always falling asleep about two minutes into the closing riff of "Ouroboros Is Broken" (the song ends with Dylan playing a three-note riff over and over for 15 minutes), trying to figure out what was so goddamn captivating about this slow, sleepy, but claustrophobically heavy band. Simple, Sabbath-influenced riffs slowly unfolding, swathed in a menacing amplifier growl, and with very sparse but precise drumming. All this captured with cold, numbing studio production rather in keeping with the surgical imagery. So undeniably "metal", but solar systems away from those Slayer and Metallica tapes I had as a kid...
This, my friends, is the beginning. Your story begins when you take this 30-minute voyage to wherever you're headed. I love who I have become and I have Earth to thank for it. Join me or die!
Just beautiful........2004-10-19
Make no mistake, this is heavy. However, as I listen to it and stare out of my window, the world seems less imposing. The sky is grey and rain dapples the moss-coloured garden path but I feel imbued with a sense of optimism. Comfortable self-assurance, with no trace of arrogance. This is music to cleanse and protect the psyche, light shone upon the shadow cast by world-weary cynicism.
As I have mentioned in another review, I worship the ground traversed by the man Preston. When his creative powers are combined with that of Dylan Carlson, we can but thank the man upstairs for giving us these two lone musical visionnaries. Extra, while not as accessible as Pentastar, nor as downright superlative - drainingly amazing as '2', serves as yet another reminder of Earth's ability and scope. So lock the doors, close the windows and unplug the phone. Settle down with your recreational of choice. The insistant, hypnotic drone pulls you in, only for the planet-sized guitar work to engulf you. Not suffocating you, rather enveloping you in womb-like warmth. Your head begins to gently sway as you let go of any ill-feeling and tension.
Seriously people, this is my therapy, my escape and without wanting to sound melodramatic, my salvation via music. Never-the-less, I am probably preaching to the converted. Those who know, know. Those who don't probably never will. All I can say as I stare out the window, in thrall to the drone; today I'm ok.
mm yeah........2003-10-27
this cd should be longer, but i like it a bunch. if you like sunn then you should like this. sunn isn't a 'tribute' as i would say. they just steal the ideas and riffs.

Who is this guy?,This was my question when I listened this super cd in my first time.I bought the cd because DENNIS and VICTOR,I thought Greg Howe had to be a good musician a good guitar player and nothin more, but not,he is the a super star ,I feel Allan Holdsworth and Eddie VH in his music and these are words in capital letters,GREG HOWE will be a master in the guitar, because I feel that this is just the begining in a new fusion era. Thanks to Mark Varney for his prodigius hears.
