Initially inspired by the guitar-violin duets of Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli developed a distinctive group sound for the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, with lead and two rhythm guitars, violin, and bass. These recordings come from near the end of their musical relationship, broadcasts from late in 1947. It's remarkably loose playing, with Django's virtuosity exploding on versions of some of his most notable compositions, like "Nuages" and "Manoir de Mes Reves," as well as jazz tunes reaching all the way back to "Dinah" and "Tiger Rag." Reinhardt was increasingly incorporating bop elements into his playing, and they're manifest on "How High the Moon." There's also later material here from the recast version of the Hot Club with altoist-clarinetist Andre Ekyun and a conventional rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums. While the group doesn't have the distinct personality of the earlier group with Grappelli, it's more amenable to the guitarist's modernist impulses. --Stuart Broomer

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Director Lasse Hallstrom's recipe for Chocolat is bittersweet, a tale of human hope and frailty imbued with no small amount of symbolism. It's a story that requires a deft, sensitive musical touch, and Hallstrom has wisely turned again to English composer Rachel Portman for the honors. As she did on The Legend of Bagger Vance and her previous, Academy Award-nominated collaboration with Hallstrom, The Cider House Rules, Portman walks the fine line between preciousness and delicacy with grace and dignity. The gypsy flavor of Django Reinhardt's and Stephane Grappelli's "Minor Swing" sets the story's place and time, while Portman's gentle pastoral melodies outline its emotional core, with a few gratifying excursions into more Euro-ethnic music to keep it well-seasoned. The result is another quiet, powerful Portman masterpiece. --Jerry McCulley

The movie is pure magic and the Rachel Portman did not let us down. I can listen to this music again and again, never tiring of it's up lifting magical ability to transport me to the French countryside with a smile of delight.

5 out of 5 stars As much of a treat as a mug of hot chocolate with a dash of chilli pepper!.......2007-05-18

This is a powerful soundtrack with a meditteranean feel, an evocative reminder of an outstanding film. There is a wonderful mix of melodies - some beautiful, haunting, melancholic and intrigueing, others joyful and uplifting. It's a bit of classical mixed with a bit of latin guitar and a touch of gypsy. A couple of the tracks are Johnny Depp playing multi-layered ethnic guitar solo. Superb. I had to have it. Try it. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Chocolat,Rachel Portman.......2007-05-16

With out a doubt, this masterpiece is one of the greatest pieces of work on the planet, so far in this century. While Srticly for the experienced
connesurer of sophisticated pop classic this CD is heavenly and divine.
absolute must have. Perfect for ADULT ROMANCE evenings that include
potential making out and drinking alittle fine wine after dinner.

4 out of 5 stars Chocolat, The Soundtrack.......2007-05-12

An absolutely fabulous collection of music, we play it continuously, there is something organic about. Certain Tracks stir a very deep feeling and reminds me of picnics by the riverside. Whilst playing and reading to which section of the film each piece belongs, it brings back very clear images of the Actors and the part they played. A Great film and superb music.

Love the music, but both were put in a simple padded envelope, consequently the CD case was cracked in a couple places.

Anyone who loves the guitar, and who enjoys discussing great players, simply must include Django Reinhardt in their library and their discussions. "Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940" is a great place to start. His speed, inventiveness, musicality, and emotion are unsurpassed by any other guitar player from any other genre or any other era. And on top of that, you get the added bonus of Stephane Grappelli's violin playing. Buy it, listen to it, and be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940.......2005-08-22

If you're into Django Reinhardt and his music, this may be the single most all-inclusive CD of his works available, containing most of the tunes he became best known for performing. You probably will not need another.

The one critique I have is, that for some inexplicable reason, the version of Limehouse Blues on this CD is noisier (hissy) than another copy of the song I have, though it is note-for-note the same version and, I'm pretty sure, the same performance. All the other tunes appear to have been processed for higher quality- a minor drawback; an excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars this is a good collection.......2005-04-27

If you're just going to buy a 1-disc Django CD, this is a pretty good one to start with. Lots of great songs on this disc. But you can spend just a little more money and get a more complete 4-disc set called "The Classic Early Recordings in Chronological Order volume 1." (I haven't listened to volume 2 yet, but I know volume 1 is good.) Anyway, it's hard to go wrong with Django Reinhardt.

This wonderful five-disc box is an indispensable collection of prewar, prebop jazz that belongs in the company of your finest Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman sets. Technically, this isn't a true box set--it merely collects five single-disc compilations under one slipcase--but it is infinitely rewarding nonetheless. Disheartened by what he thought were sonically subpar Reinhardt collections, Ted Kendall undertook an ambitious mission to find the best original sources for this classic material and then meticulously remastered them. He wisely opted to leave in some of the surface noise to maintain the clarity and integrity of the music. And what glorious, jubilant music it is! Dating to the very first Quintet of the Hot Club of France sessions in September 1934 (before they'd even established that moniker), the collection includes all the landmark recordings Reinhardt made for Ultraphone, Decca (its English and French labels), and HMV up through the Quintet's 1939 breakup on the eve of World War II. Reinhardt's guitar work is spirited and adventurous throughout--lightning-quick runs, insistent rhythm work, and hybrid "riffs" that seem to split the difference. Nearly all the cuts feature the elegant but vivacious violin work of his most famous foil, Stephane Grappelli, who certainly deserves co-billing on the set. The way the two feed off each other's energy is magical. Despite their well-documented personality clashes, the twosome remains perhaps the most synergistic in jazz history, constantly engaging in their incredible cat-and-mouse games. Often overlooked are the songwriting talents of the two musicians, who contributed several standards to the jazz canon. Though mostly focused on the Quintet recordings, the set detours for such oddities as a pair of solo Reinhardt cuts from 1937 and collaborations with Coleman Hawkins. Simply delightful from beginning to end. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful - for the Purists among us.......2007-07-02

Django Reinhardt's music is a study in Jazz influence, improvisation and sheer exuberance. These recordings take you through his early years and maturity as an astonishing guitarist. If you understand guitar and what it took for him to play as he did, your appreciation for the technical virtuosity cannot but respond to his work.

The digital re-masterings themselves faithfully reproduce the original sounds, complete with all of the surface noise that attended those early 78's. For the purist this is no problem because the desire is to not have any of the music also filtered. For those who are into casual listening or background music while you drive, especially if you listen at high volume, you might find it a bit distracting.

One of the most delightful aspects of Reinhardt's group is Stephan Grappely's Jazz violin. We don't think of the violin as a jazz instrument very often, but these folks made it work wonderfully in group. Reinhardt shared the lead often with his band and it gives the music a diversity which enables sustained listening without boredom.

Good group, good selections, good music.

5 out of 5 stars Django Reinhardt , Classic Early Recordings.......2007-04-12

Like the Supreme Court Justice opined about obscenity [I'm informed],
he said if he saw it he would know what it was. I have sonically seen
Django and I know what JAZZ GENIUS IS!! He and his consorts swing from
the beginning to the end every time they do a tune. Being an un-recon-
structed Stan Kenton fan of some 60 + years, I recognize that except
for some Shorty Rogers charts and particularly "Stompin' At The Savoy"
by Bill Holman, Django could have made even the Kenton band swing! How
he could swing so hard with a wounded wing is an education. If you dig
jazz or think you might, this is the ONE to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Tout Sweet.......2007-01-08

Imagine yourself luxuriously pouring time down the drain in some obscure cafe, contemplating the crumbling Parisian skyline through an absinthe-induced fog, puffing on a Gauloise sans filtre securely plugged into an ivory cigarette holder. At the adjoining table a taciturn J.P. Sartre is cheating at solitaire. Out back, on the cobblestone street worn smooth by centuries of horse hooves, Gertrude Stein is rebuilding the transmission of an American Jeep. This is your sound track.

The Classic Early Recordings of Django Reinhardt is one of the best deals in the entire Amazon jungle. From sound quality to song selection to sheer quantity, this superb 5-CD set recreates a whole environment; it transports you to another place and time. Perhaps the only flaw is that Stephane Grappelly does not get equal billing - the real magic of this music is found in the interplay between these two giants.

It is tempting to say that Reinhardt was the Hendrix of his generation; it is perhaps more accurate to say that Hendrix was the Reinhardt of his generation. Django Reinhardt, (believed by some to be the best guitarist ever), belongs in the same pantheon with Art Tatum and Charlie Parker - he exhibited almost Faustian brilliance, worlds beyond other players. Green bananas are advised to remember that everything Reinhardt played - he actually played - these recordings were made long before technology took the place of talent.

Reinhardt's style is extremely athletic, he strums as if he is trying to rip the strings off. Lightning-quick riffs are tossed off almost thoughtlessly, creating a vibrant, racing energy. Grappelly's elegant, lyrical violin is the perfect counterpoint, where Reinhardt drives, Grappelly soars. As staggeringly fast as Reinhardt is, Grappelly never strains to keep up, his work here establishes him as heavyweight champ of jazz violin. This music is relentlessly joyful, upbeat, and sweet. While it is always possible to analyze it for sheer technical virtuosity, the temptation to fall under its magical spell is far greater. Absolutely enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars Guitarist Supreme-Django Reinhardt.......2006-08-20

This is a first for us to hear Django play guitar.A simply wonderful set of his recordings. We love his way of playing. So expressive and uplifting and up to date.He is very accomplished musician. "Ted Kendall" (sound engineer) did a fine job of restoring of original recordings. The CD and case like new. Arrived on time. Seller highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars if you have the mosaic and you're wondering..........2006-05-05

it may have been pointed out another reviewer, but:
if you have the mosaic swing/hmv set and you're concerned about overlap, go ahead and get this set. there's only about a disc and a half of overlap. 3 1/2 hours' worth of non-duplicates, of sessions which preceded those in the mosaic and, even better, the complete paris and london decca sides from '38-39. restoration-wise, these are a little noisier than the mosaic, but also sweeter top end. different approach, i like both. pure joy.

Actor-turned-director Peter Chelsom calls Town & Country the "story of a man who dips his toe in the water of extramarital activity and nearly drowns," but it is better described as a comedy of manners tailored to the talents of stars Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, and Gary Shandling. Chelsom wisely delegates the musical score to fellow Englishman Rolfe Kent, a musician who's become one of the foremost practitioners of sophisticated comedy scoring (see Slums of Beverly Hills, Election, Nurse Betty). This soundtrack kicks off with a slate of pop tunes--from Patsy Cline and Louis Armstrong to Django Reinhardt and the Royal Crown Revue--that set the film's screwball tone, and Kent manages to subtly evoke the same sentiments in his playful orchestral writing. The musical touchstones here are the European comedic scores of Rota, Piovani, and, especially, Morricone's rich '70s oeuvre, though Kent infuses his distinctive work with modern touches and imaginative instrument choices. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars An interesting, unique soundtrack.......2002-02-08

O.K., O.K. I know the film bombed. Call me and my husband weird, but we enjoyed the film and we really like listening to the soundtrack. It has a great variety of music. It has moody stuff, dancing stuff, mysterious stuff, etc. If you have eclectic tastes, I think you'll like this soundtrack. I really do. If you're into hip-hop, rap, techno, or anything even approaching these genres, forget it. You'll hate this. This is good old fashioned MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars Hot! Hot! Hot!.......2001-03-05

This cd features guitar great Django Reinhardt and his longtime musical partner, violinist Stephane Grappelly in a variety of settings, chiefly a quintet. Few guitarists combined techncal dexterity with a fertile musical imagination and sense of swing like Django. His solo lines are as thrilling and lightning quick as any Charlie Parker solo, and his sound is packed with a bright tone, sharp attack, and subtle vibrato that is instantly recognizable. Complimented by the more laidback, cooler Grappelly, the two swing through the 20 tracks and leave you breathless, check out Grappelly's hot solo supported by Django's on frenetic chording on "My Sweet". Every cut is a brilliant performance that holds up under multiple listenings. This cd is as suited to the newcomer as it is to the long time fan and is highly recommended.

Although Django Reinhardt was famous for his mood swings and volatile temper, his unique guitar work remains beyond reproach and nearly impossible to copy. A fire cost him the use of two of his fingers on his left hand, but he turned this apparent handicap into an asset. Partner Stephane Grappelli was no doubt frustrated by Reinhardt's fiery demeanor and his nearly confrontational rhythmic support, but Grappelli translated this frustration into musical magic--the unlikeliness of the pairing was central to its amazing success. On these late-1930s classics, Grappelli swings brightly and gracefully on violin while Reinhardt plays aggressively and often frenetically. Reinhardt's conspicuous rhythm work is equally as impressive as his solos, often dominating the other three musicians and controlling the pace himself. "China Boy," recorded six months before the famous Benny Goodman Trio recording, features the guitarist's dramatic comping. Indeed, his passionate strumming threatens to swallow Grappelli's solos at times, but the violinist always seems to respond with inspired licks. The two often play a game of one-upmanship, as the intensity builds to a blistering crescendo, Grappelli's violin soaring over Reinhardt's jagged rhythm. That's not to say that Grappelli wasn't capable of forceful and energetic lines, or that Reinhardt was unable to show sensitivity. Reinhardt's pithy ideas reveal a vibrant sense of humor while his ballad style often uses sarcasm as a tool; Grappelli, in yet another contrast, usually treated these melodies with more respect. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Decca recordings in France.......2001-12-18

This collection consists of many of the Decca recordings done in France in 1935 thru 1938. For some reason, the Decca recordings in general are not being reissued. Most of the pre-war recordings on the 100 or so CDs available are from the French Gramaphone recordings. The music on this CD is of the same quality as we are all used to and belong in the collection of anyone who enjoys the quintet at its best. The only problem with this CD is the poor restoration of the records used. You will have to re-equalize the high frequencies to restore the brilliance to the sound and accept some surface noise.

5 out of 5 stars Django and Stephane at their best.......2001-08-20

Whether you are a long time fan, or just discovering the swing jazz mastery of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli your music collection will be enriched by this CD. There is not a bad song in the bunch. I have several Django/Stephane CD's that I listen to often, but this one is my favorite. All the moods are here, and they are blended together perfectly. You can't go wrong. :-)
