Not since Shakatak in the '80s has a band from London so effortlessly combined British acid jazz/funk with America's smooth-jazz sensibilities. Most of the tracks here have a mellowness about them that probably feels safe to those who don't need strong hip-hop rhythms and bold vocals. On the other hand, DTTB rely heavily on sharp, crisp arrangements, dynamic musicianship, and an adherence to a '70s sonic palette. Producer-arranger Stuart Wade is the artist with the brush on what is, if not the group's best album, certainly their most cohesive. Song titles are almost self-explanatory: "Searching for a Simple Groove," "Cooking with Gas," and "Electra Glide." --Mark Ruffin

Great Music.......2007-01-14
This is great music. Jazz influences, driving beats and melodies that compel you to listen often. My favorite track, "I Softly Surrender (To You)", is one of the most interesting, and beautiful compositions I have ever heard. This CD is a must have.
Marvelous.......2003-12-13
I know funky jazz and how it should sound. DTTB has accomplished this feat. The bands driving melodies create a pleasing euphoria similar to what I felt when I heard earth, wind and fire for the first time. I believe DTTB is destined for similar fame. You just can't match that funky sound anywhere else. My advice is to buy all of their albums and you won't be disappointed.
inofensive music, but is that a good thing?.......2003-10-08
If you were to liken the smooth jazz genre to a food it would probably be something with lots of MSG in it. Like the flavor enhancer that can serve to make the most banal dishes taste wonderful, smooth jazz with all it's hip, poppy, groovy, sunny good time vibes often sounds much more pleasing to the ear at first listen but doesn't really stand up to closer scrutiny. DTTB is a group that attempts to combine said smooth jazz with the grittier sensibilities of urban funk with a british tinge (dare i say mid '90s acid jazz?). These are two musical styles that i have always enjoyed however here the combination is slightly less than inspiring. Sure, all the essential ingredients are there - relentlessly groovy tracks played by adept musicians, funky bass lines and drum tracks and solos that lend an air of jazz credibility to the project. However the end result seems to be a rather lifeless record. The grooves are groovy, but not really FUNKY. The compositions seem staid enough not to offend smooth jazz listeners but is that a good thing? I guess so if you only want an album to put on in the background to use as mood music (or should that be muzak?). But if you are looking for an album that has a smooth feel to it and a real sense of soul in the rhythm i don't think this album is for you. Don't get me wrong i like this sort of music and don't regret buying the cd. But I am afraid that in anyone's collection this is an album that is destined to fade into the obscurity of disuse.
keep s your legs movin and finger s movin, its a grove thing.......2003-03-08
I have all the cds and they are great, this one is great also
I look foward to each one coming out and this one was worth the wait just like the first two. I do think they need to start puttin some singers on the tracks more tho, the music will be the same but that much better. this is good and worth buying and
so far they are 3 for 3 , cant wait to see the next or hear it .
Groovin' funk/jazz/dance.......2003-02-17
Down to the Bone really puts the fun back into modern jazz. Their blend is more of a dance beat with funk and jazz improvisations. This is a kind of disc you'll want to throw into your surround sound system, and turn the volume and bass WAY up. There are no breather songs in this, as DTTB doesn't seem to believe in ballads. Absolutely amazing and fun standouts that you have to listen to are On a Roll, Music is my Drug and Searching for a Simple Groove.
Definitely worth buying if you love to dance to your music.
