Suddenly the sound of crisp horns, a gritty guitar, polyrhythmic percussion, and a soul-stirring keyboard sail out in balance to the tightly knitted community of music enthusiasts and underground connoisseurs that have become Fertile Ground's audience. Shortly after, the lead vocalist, Navasha Daya appears, reminiscent of some sort of ceremonial queen, and her cosmic stage presence sends the audience cheering and eventually transports them from swaying into all out dancing. Tonight is magical, but it is not out of the ordinary. Fertile Ground has repeated this feat at venues all over the world. This once humble Baltimore-based jazz trio has evolved into a seven piece international powerhouse performing 50-80 shows a year, ranging from sold-out clubs to large stadium festivals. They have hypnotized music lovers at the Jazz Café in London, The Blue Note in Tokyo, B.B. King's in NYC, The Dusable Museum in Chicago, Pier Six in Baltimore, and Blues Alley in D.C. Each of their shows is an opportunity to not only convert people into Fertile Ground fans, but also to renew a dying faith in the power of live music.

Uplifting lyrics radiate naturally through Navasha Daya as she challenges everything in the room to evolve. A graduate of Cleveland School for the Arts, this effervescent singer was classically trained through Morgan State University's world-renowned choir and became prominent on the scene in 1999 by winning first place in the National Billie Holliday Vocal Competition. Also a budding songwriter and producer, Navasha and newly-wed husband James provide the perfect backbone to this seasoned army of world-class musicians.

Fertile Ground has shared the stage with such multi-platinum heavyweights as Cassandra Wilson, Hugh Masekela, Me'Shell N'Degeocello, India Arie, Wynton Marsalis, Jill Scott, Chaka Khan, and even Run DMC. The band is often classified as Soul-Jazz, but they spill out of any genre as a cross-cultural fusion of all things spiritual and funk-ridden. In this realm called good music, theatrics never replace integrity, nor does experience and success replace a creatively fresh approach to each project. Messages are heart-felt, conveying an unashamed spirituality, a firm political stance, or whatever the moment requires, and everything is heavily supported by raw, organic, often danceable compositions in the tradition of Fela Kuti, Stevie Wonder, Santana, and Earth Wind & Fire. With the requisite strength, depth and energy to electrify crowds, musicians, DJs, journalists, and promoters not just once or twice, but over and over again, Fertile Ground has been cementing their place as! musical and social innovators.

If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.

I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.

Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).

I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.

Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.

This choir is amazing. I love this CD because I feel the presence of my lord while i listen to it. My favorites songs are "Lord I believe in you", "Saved" , "We are not ashamed" and "Days of Elijah". You have to own one to your worship collection. I gave it an A+.

Also I recommend their latest release "Im Amazed".

The Dale Warland Singers are my benchmark by which I judge all other choirs. The uniformity of sound, blend, and precise entrances, uniformity are incredible - almost inhuman. Excluding the all male Chanticleer from the roster, this was the finest choir in America. Now that they have broken up, buy all of their CD's you won't be disappointed!

A project like this one inevitably highlights the skill of arrangers, and Dale Warland has selected some of the most talented anywhere. Most of these selections will be familiar to listeners, but I doubt most people have heard, for example, "Red River Valley" in Carol Barnett's haunting version here, and ditto for her magnificent "Deep River."

The disc opens with a spectacular, panoramic "Shenandoah" that takes maximum advantage of the Dale Warland Singers' refined sound, and things only get better (if that's possible). Other favorites are a cheery, fizzing "Nelly Bly" and Mark Keller's strong reworking of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More."

Throughout the recording, the freshness of the arrangements is matched by the irresistible singing. This group is known for its outstanding performances and recordings, but this must be counted as one of their all-time best. The sound quality is terrific, capturing the gorgeous blend and precision of the group in a natural-sounding acoustic. Just stunning.

The Dale Warland Singers (DWS) are among the relatively few musical professionals, who by their aesthetic standards and demonstrated artistry, have taken the less traveled and narrow road to exemplary artistic excellence.

The sound quality and acoustics are excellently engineered in this 20-bit original recording. The most delicately blend and inflection of the singers' voice can be heard. This sheaf of choral works has once existed in real space and time in the kaleidoscopic folklife of past generations. In recording the "Blue Wheat", the 40-member DWS, the creme de la creme of professional choral ensembles, has elevated the common oral tradition of American folk music into a rarified choral art form a capella "in the style of the chapel."

If the soul of the DWS is a capella singing, then Warland and the arrangers are the wings of the same soul. Among the kapellmeisters whose arrangements have graced this folksong anthology are the late Norman Luboff and Roger Wagner. Also included in this album are contemporary arrangements by other esteemed composers: John Rutter (conductor of The Cambridge Singers), Carol Barnett (the DWS resident composer from 1992 to 2001), and Stephen Paulus.

Gertrude Stein is famous for saying of her childhood home, Oakland, California, "When you get there, there's no there there." Purportedly, Stein opined this city by the San Francisco Bay lacked a defining sense of place. Bel canto notwithstanding, the folk melodies of "Blue Wheat" invoke a longing for something no longer possible. The abyss between the America today and the its past is impossible to bridge. Already, we have yielded to the abstractness of political correctness. Our past is either neglected, actively destroyed, or selectively museumed. We do not live in an understood land and culture. There is no there here in the presence of this music. It is only the poignancy of the moment that these beautifully rendered tunes live in our mind. We have to accept this reality as part and parcel of our rootlessness.

If the Oakland Raiders do make it to and win the Superbowl in 2003, there is a there there for some in the football community, albeit fleeting.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this,then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

    "Black Metal", an album that is just as its' name implies, is in my opinion Venom's finest hour. Just as the rest of Venom's catalog, "Black Metal" goes without hooks or in sync melody, and opts instead for over the top heaviness, pounding drums, ripping guitars, and toungue in cheek lyrics about the man downstairs. Songs like "Black Metal", "To Hell and Back", "Buried Alive", and "Sacrifice" are all great thrashing songs, while the unexpectedly laugh out loud hilarious "Teacher's Pet" shows that the band is more than what they are perceived to be and really do have a sense of humor. I say that this album is important for a very good reason; every thrash band that boomed in the 80's (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus) cited Venom as one of their top influences, and Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo even cited "Black Metal" as one of the most influential albums of his life. All that there alone is reason enough to give Venom a listen. This recent re-issue has a much sharper sound than any of the previously available imports, which makes it all the sweeter for new listeners to check out.

    First off, I was 12 years old when this album was released and had actually purchased it at the time and therefore am officially qualified to actually write a review or have an acceptable opinion. As far as I'm concerned these kids expressing opinions about an album that was released before they were even born don't really matter. Venom were and still are the true kings of what eventually became known as black metal, speed metal, thrash metal, death metal and on and on and on. Venom's first appearance in the music industry was the same as the arrival of Black Sabbath. They were the most extreme band of their time. The people who criticize Venom's ability as capable musicians have missed the point entirely and shouldn't be allowed to even speak on the subject of music or musical composition. Venom's power was in the overall sound of their albums and in the dark primitive nature of the music, not flashy recordings and technical musical compositions. These albums sound like they were recorded in the bowels of hell. I am actually amazed at the recordings. Cronos has the most convincingly sinister voice in the entire music industry. "Black Metal" along with "Welcome to Hell" are the two bonafied greatest extreme metal albums of all time end of story.

    I just bought this cd and i havent stopped listening to it! It is an amazing album...just raw fast riffs and fast drumming! It is a classic metal album, although Venom is not really that well-known by some metalheads. Amazing songs on this album include the title track "Black Metal", my personal favorite "Countess Bathory", "Raise the Dead," "Acid Queen," and "Heaven's On Fire." This is just a raw album full of catchy riffs and Cronos (vocals, bassist) yelling and moaning and acting possessed, ot is just soooo awesome.

    This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

    Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

    After touring both with Ozzfest and Sepultura, Hatebreed's sophomore album, 1997's "Satisfaction is the Death of Desire," made it official: they had successfully crossed over from hardcore to metal. Aside from East Coast hardcore-reminiscent lyrics and song titles (see "Empty Promises" and "Betrayed By Life"), this Connecticut-based quintet's music sounds unquestionably metal. "Satisfaction" is clearly influenced by old-school thrash and death metal as much as any other genre. It is a complete hurricane of simple, low-string, grinding guitar riffs, pummeling, jackhammering, raw-sounding drum beats, and Sepultura-like barks from vocalist Jamey Jasta. Hatebreed sound like a well-oiled machine as the band members attack their instruments. The guitarists lead the charge - their streamlined, chainsaw-stutter riffs and rumbling, bottom-heavy leads blaze through the songs and carve a path for the rest of the band; then Christ Beattie lays down some equally-as-rigid bass lines, and drummer Jamie Pushbutton hammers away at his skins as if they were oil cans he's trying to crack open. Add a particularly raw production job that leaves the edges on the music, and the end result is fourteen belligerent, ripping, muscular, abrasive, and bludgeoning mosh pit anthems that clock in at a combined total of just under half an hour long. They're simple yet effective little songs - not overly technical, musical, or intricate songs - but heavy, aggressive, raw, genuine, hooky, and visceral enough to leave an impression.

    None of the songs really catch the listener's ear as a glowing highlight, because the whole album is kind of one long, discordant (almost cacophonous), continuously flowing song. But listeners looking for a few standout tracks are advised to check out the machine gun guitar-drum give-and-take on the album opener; the strong, hefty, churning guitar lead and smashing drums on "Burn The Lies"; the buzzsaw riffs and memorable, shout-along chorus in "Before Dishonor"; the lumbering riffs and catchy, bellowed chorus in "Conceived Through An Act Of Violence" and "Last Breath"; the blistering "Afflicted Past"; and the mini, rapid-fire drum solo that begins "Betrayed By Life."

    At only 25 minutes, "Satisfaction is the Death of Desire" may seem like a fairly short album, but anybody who has heard the disc should tell you that running time is just about the right length - it's long enough to leave a scar, and short enough to avoid becoming stale. All in all "SITDOD" is a definite hardcore/crossover/Nineties classic, a must own for fans of the genre, and as of 1997 (the year it was released), it was the most brutal album Slayer hadn't released in several years.

    Ah the memories.... getting my head stopped on by a crowd of crazed adrenaline charged moshers... those were the good ol days. I remember the NYC hardcore scene back in the early-mid 90s... bands like Madball, Bulldoze, 25 to life, Dog Eat Dog (to name a few) dominated the scene. Music has turned many different corners since then. It's always nice to pull out this Hatebreed CD (or Mp3s now)and listen to one of the finest examples of east coast hardcore. Put it on and crank it up!

    They are no doubt talented in their genre of music. Very fast paced music as always, this CD is full of hardcore guitar riffs. I can't help but to always picture a crazy mosh pit involved in every one of their songs. If I were to choose a single song to decide whether or not to buy this CD, I would pick the song "Last Breath". Some good metal. Rhapsody categorized this album as well as Hatebreed in general under "Metalcore". Remember that if you are going to buy this album, this is Hatebreed so expect a whole lotta screaming. Hatebreed to me is the official "head banging, mosh pit" band of today, and this album definitely shows it. It even comes with a poetic title.

    I like alot of music but this I dont.I dont even think this should be called music.Every song sound the same.This cd is plain horribal.Dont buy it unless your on the highschool football team so you can fit in with the other jocks.

    [...]. Hatebreed isn't death metal. They're straight in your face hardcore mixed with the brutality of metal, a winning combination. Come on, who could not love the brutality Jamey Jasta and gang deliver straight towards your face? I'm sure you've never heard of Hatebreed in 1997, unless you're a hardcore fan. I was only 9 years old at that time, so I have an excuse. "Before Dishonor" brings the guitar work of Sepultura mixed in with the hardcore tinges of Warzone and Earth Crisis, without the straight edge stuff (I think drugs are wicked. They took the lives of such great people, like Chris Farley, Brad Nowell and Layne Staley). "Before Dishonor" has Jamey's vocals a tad bit deeper than on his new stuff, but it's still great. Slightly better. (I still love Hatebreed.) "Last Breath" is another classic, even though it's only a minute and a half long. It still delivers right to your ears. It's just that great. The whole freakin' CD is awesome. What are you waiting for? Get off you ass and buy it!
