Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, this four-disc collector's edition will please fans who weren't satiated by the original 145-minute two-CD set. With a Little Help serves as a road map through their array of influences, as the band wends its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half-hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight may still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and a mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc Greilsamer

Mostly Killer.......2007-06-13
I think of Gov't Mule as the world's best covers band, but meant as a compliment if that's possible. Although Warren Haynes has blossomed somewhat as a songwriter since these tracks were recorded, Mule's best moments are mostly outside the studio, playing borrowed material. Perhaps 'world's best jam band' might be more accurate. Haynes has an insatiable - and infectious - appetite for playing live and he draws some extremely talented peers into his circle. (Having said that, the trio doesn't need much of a hand here, and Haynes dominates the set more than he does on 'Deepest End Live', with its stunning line-up of guests). The highlights are Mule's eponymous signature song (with a quote from Van Morrison's 'I've Been Working') and a superb version of Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer'. While not straying far from the original, it suffers absolutely nothing by comparison. It is a perfect vehicle for Haynes' soulful voice and also features one of his best-ever solos. Hayne's Anglophile tendencies lead to this set's weaker moments - the Free and Black Sabbath covers. 'Afro-Blue' meanders but, otherwise, there's no let-up in the energy of a super-charged show.

This is a must have collection for anyone! It may seem costly, but it is worth every penny and then some. If you have never heard of Gov't Mule you need to climb out from under your rock and buy this CD immediately! Do not hesitate or think about it, just do it! We have all of the Gov't Mule albums and a lot of concert downloads from their website and every MB (a week plus worth of music) being taken up on our computer by Mule is done so gladly.
This is an awesome album! I agree with one of the reviewer, this is one that I would take will being stranded anywhere! For me this ranks right up there with Physical Grafitti!
The riffs and slides Warren pulls off are mind blowing and the rest of the band are awesome players. This is one band that does not get the playing time on the radio that they deserve! GET THIS ALBUM, NOW!

5 Stars for the 4-hour, 4-CD "Collectors Edition".......2007-02-04
This originally came out as a 2-CD set, followed by the 4-CD "Collectors Edition." Spend the extra bucks and get the 4-CD set...it's well worth it. On recent albums Gov't Mule has moved away from cover versions in favor of more original tunes, but the band always chose their covers wisely. A perfect example is Neil Young's masterpiece from the "Zuma" album, "Cortez The Killer." It's moody and nasty and seductive and loud...the Mule does not mess with the legacy of the Horse. The same is true for Free's "Mr. Big" (also covered on the Mule's debut album), Sabbath's "War Pigs," Little Feat's "Spanish Moon," and Frank Zappa's "Pygmy Twylyte." If you have the slightest interest in this kind of music, especially when it comes to Warren Haynes and his many projects (Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Phil Lesh & Friends, The Dead, etc) this is as close to a guarantee of a "busting at the seams" collection of excellent tracks, played with power and passion, as you're gonna get.
Pretty Good.......2007-01-20

The musicians chosen for this album are outstanding. They give heartfelt renderings of some great Beatle's tunes with the added mastery of fine Jazz playing. Inventive and enjoyable without being just another adaptation.

Customer Reviews:
a cd that may grow on you.......2006-10-19
I am not a big Gov't Mule fan. The endless guitar solo can get boring. I bought this becasue it is suppsoed to have a reputation as a superb live cd.
When I first listened to this, it did nothing for me. The interesting cover songs of "30 days in a hole", "war pigs" and "Cortez the Killer" were pretty lame versions, far worse then the originals.
Befroe I gave up on the cd, I decided to just play the cd from start to finish rather then aiming for particular songs. That is hwne the cd came alive and I saw the light!
The best sonsg are the extended jams, songs with organ, horns and a groove. THis stuff can definitely grow on you in a hypnotic way.
I now enjoy this cd for what it is, great musicians interplaying with each other. The music is far better than the songs. This is like mood music rather than focusing on one songs.
The best song is "Mule" which starts out rocking but then goes into a tight groove. "Soulshine" is good (but the shorter studio version is better). "Afro Blue" and "Mr. Big" are also jamming standouts.
I am sure seeing them live, with the extended jams, will add to my appreciate for the band. This is the stereotypical jam band.
The Best Live Album You Should Never Buy.......2006-05-25
I know my title is a bit confusing, but it's still a true statement. While this album is excellent, this two cd set doesn't even begin to showcase the awesome show Gov't Mule put on that night. Luckily there is a 4 disc box set of the entire concert that was released some time after this initial release. The box set is double the price of this album, but the content is way more than double in size on the box set.
Great Music!.......2003-03-05
I got turned on to Gov't Mule late in the act, but thank God I did. They are a great group of muscians who obviously enjoy playing together. It is too bad that they lost their great bass player shortly after this CD. This CD repressents a taste of how this band performs live. If you want to hear more pick up the 4 CD set of this same concert. However, the set list on this 2 CD set is excellent. It has a number of great covers including: Black Sabbaths "War Pigs" ( can't help but think of Rumsfield and the situation in N. Korea/Iraq these days), Humble Pie's "30 Days in the Hole" with a tease of "I don't need no doctor" at the end, and a Great version of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer". That being said the two tunes that impressed me the most were Dave Mason's "Sad and Deep as You" and Coltranes "Afro-Blue". Just stellar playing throughout. If you like instrumental interplay and long laid out jams this CD is a must. Also some of the other reviewers mentioned the talking in-between songs on the 4 CD set, you won't find that on this set.If you can't afford the 4 CD set this is a excellent way to ease the pain untill that time.
Great Live Album from Great Live Band.......2001-10-31
I recently saw a Gov't Mule show and it was fantastic. They closed off the encores with Rockin' in the Free World, and it was an unreal ending to a concert which kept me through the roof the whole way through. This album actually does a very effective job, in my opinion, of capturing the live power of the band. Though no live album has or will ever come close to The Brothers at Fillmore East, this may come as close as any.
And as for when Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (who is actually Butch's nephew, not son) play together, I also saw the Allman Brothers this summer, with these two and w/out the kicked out Dickey Betts, and it was probably the best I've ever seen. I don't think its unfair to say that Derek Trucks could be a next Duane Allman, and he and Warren dualing to old Allman Brothers blues classics helped me to truly glimpse what it might've been like in the heyday of TABB. If you are a fan of this type of live musical intensity, this album is a can't miss.
Like a kicking mule..........2001-02-01
The music contained on this 2 CD set and the 4 CD Collector`s Edition it is culled from is intended to be a document of a special night of music. The ability of the musicians to lay out their very soul on these cuts and the way that they continue to amaze and excite on every song far out weighs any quibble about the sound isn`t studio quality. if that`s what you want listen to any number of glossy crap on the AM radio. If what you want is astonishing musicians improvising and creating jams that make you smile and wonder at the talent that can come from an individual, then buy this.
I personally have no problem with the sound, because that`s not what is important here. The soulfulness and the love of each musician here for the music is what makes this unique. The way the players are able to blend their own sound into the songs of the Mule, and the great cover versions here, that`s what is important. If you listen to a song, or a whole CD, and when it`s done you sit there in the quiet and you can`t believe what you heard, and so you listen again, and the feeling is still the same, then you know you`ve heard greatness. I can pretend to be qualified enough to critique a musicians work and act like I know more about what they did or did not play, or that their sound isn`t up to par. I can only relay the experience that I felt and heard, and try to express it. This a wonderful collection of songs from a great concert, as I feel are the majority of Warren Haynes and the Mule shows are. They bring together incredible musicians, play great covers, and they sound awesome. By the way, I give this an unofficial 6 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Nice live set here.......2006-11-04
Rather than review a 4 disc set , I'll give my review of this item. It's further live material with special guests and the music on here is very good. A lengthy version of Little Feat's "Spanish Moon" is a highlight here and fans of Warren Haynes work with Mule and the Allman Brothers will enjoy this disc. I don't see how some reviewers will give this a bad review based on the fact that this material can be purchased as part of a boxed set. This disc is sold as a stand alone disc and it is very enjoyable however you purchase it.
Buy The Collectors Edition Instead..........2003-05-24
I own LWALHFOF, The Collectors Edition as well as the two CD version. For my money this product is a waste. Gov't Mule with the late great Allen Woody(bass) was a spectacular band. Mixing equal parts blues, funk, jazz, country, and space jamming this band in some ways even surpassed its parent band, the 1990's ABB.
Warren Haynes felt that he had to release the four CD set because the concert was great. I concur with that assessment.
Do yourself a favor, lay down the extra $$ for the expanded edition I promise you won't be disappointed!
Get the Limited Edition Boxset instead.......2003-05-13
There is some good music here, but this not the thing to buy. It is not a good value, and it does not contain the best of the concert. You should buy the Limited Edition instead. If you already have the 2 CD "vol 1", then you have a hard choice to make.
Live With A Little Help From Our Friends comes from a New Years Eve concert in 1998. It was released as a standard 2 disc set and a Limited Edition 4 disc set. The 2 CD set contained about 150 minutes of music. The Limited Edition contained the complete concert, was 100 minutes longer and had some extras. The Limited Edition, was originally a limited edition, but now it is readily available and not too expensive.
This CD, vol 2, contains 5 tracks that were on the Limited Edition, but not on the standard 2 CD set. It is only 50 minutes long. I don't know why they didn't bother to include more songs, especially since there was enough room on the CD. Left off is the 17 minute version of Hendrix's Third Stone from the Sun. It is the second best track on the Limited Edition. Instead they include Spanish Moon, with the silly chipmunk solo in the middle.
Note that the last track, Frank Zappa's Pygmy Twilight is actually a studio recording.
In summary, I don't think this CD is worth buying. It is only 50 minutes long. If you already have vol 1, buying this does not give you the complete concert. It doesn't contain the best tracks from the concert. And it is priced at about the same price as the 2 CD vol 1, with 3 times more music.
More great live music.......2002-07-02
More great music from one of the best jam bands in America. Get this if you have the 2 CD version of LWALHFOF 1. Otherwise you might want to go for the 4 CD box set.
In any case, it's great and Warren Haynes' scope and talent is incredible.
Gov't Mule and Friends Create Outstanding Music In Concert.......2002-05-18
At a time when so much great live music remains in the vaults, Warren Haynes continues to record and release amazing performances. The "Wintertime Blues" live double CD of an annual Christmas Jam with major guests, is also a prime example.
Live With A Little Help From Our Friends 2, along with Part 1 released earlier, was recorded at Atlanta's Roxy Theatre New Year's Eve '98/'99. Amazing music with Gov't Mule's Haynes, Allen Woody, Matt Abts, and with guests Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks, Jimmy Herring, Randall Bramblett, Bernie Worrell, Marc Ford and others. How fortunate there were tapes rolling.
***The 4 CD Collector's Limited Edition of this is highly recommended, which includes CD-ROM Enhanced Bonus Material.
Quality rock music is alive and well.

Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, the 145-minute, two-CD set serves as a road map through their array of influences, wending its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight might still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul-style number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--also including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc Greilsamer
