Product Description
Master band leader, vibraphone virtuoso and second most sampled men in hip-hop…Just a fraction of the titles Roy Ayers has amassed in his near-mythical journey through the international Jazz, Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop worlds.

As a result of legendary albums like Everybody Loves The Sunshine (1976) Stoned Soul Picnic (1968) and Mystic Voyage (1975), Roy Ayers has established himself as a living legend and an idol of jazz cats, crate diggers and true music lovers the world over. Having played with some of the finest musicians in the world, including Herbie Hancock, Guru, Fela Kuti, Mary J. Blige, Ron Carter, Erykah Badu, and The Roots, Roy Ayers has found acceptance from both the Jazz and Hip-Hop communities.

In 2003, Ayers gave Rapster/BBE unprecedented access to hundreds of unreleased recordings. This resulting album is the 2nd in the Lost and Found series and what is likely to be a series of albums, giving life to what can only be termed "the holy grail" of any true music lover's search.

Album Description

In 2004 Rapster/BBE released, to much global critical acclaim, the first Virgin Ubiquity album, an amazing collection of unreleased recordings from everyone's favorite vibes man, Roy Ayers. He is the embodiment of positive, creative energy at its zenith, and at the youthful age of 63, he shows no signs of slowing down.

Roy's vault, having been opened to BBE's Peter Adarkwah, has offered up a second albums' worth of previously unreleased precious gems. Over most of 2004 a huge quantity of 2-inch reels were lovingly restored. After an agonizing process of elimination, the tracks before us were delivered to Jamey Staub, who lovingly mixed each retrieved master, giving lush warmth to the finished album, rarely heard in the modern era.

VUII is collection of newfound funky grooves that will undoubtedly appeal equally to hip-hoppers, soul lovers, jazz freaks, young, and old.

4 out of 5 stars Virgin Ubiquity, Vol. 2........2006-12-21

I enjoyed this disk. If you are a serious Roy Ayers fan, give it a listen! Four stars!!

5 out of 5 stars It all depends.......2005-09-17

Rather than break down each and every song on this project I will simply state that it all depends on what mood you are in, which song will set you on fire. Like other reviewers, I highly recommend this CD to the avid Roy Ayers fan. "I Am Your Mind part 2" and "Funk In The Hole" are my personal favorites. Just these two combined for 13 minutes of pure funk/grooves are worth the purchase in my book. Whatever, or whenever the mood, this project will satisfy your earhole. "Holiday", "Liquid Love", and "Release Yourself" add more history and enjoyment than your mind can stand. The Executive Producers did an outstanding job with this hidden treasure.

4 out of 5 stars pick it up-pick it up.......2005-09-10

More times than not unreleased material needs to stay in the mixing console, computers, and equalizers it was born in. But funk/grove icon Roy Ayers is trying to disprove the theory again with his second installment of Virgin Ubiquity. Like the last one, the thirteen songs resemble a team Pistons style: great fillers but no real hits. Come to me, Release yourself, Kwajilori are vintage Ayers feel-good-roll-the-windows-down tunes while Holiday gives props to MLK day. The jewels on the CD are the spoken word driven I am your mind pt. 2 which features Ayers doing his best (but good) Carl Clay impression and Sunshine; a dreamy reprise of his 1976 classic that features Ayers himself on lead vocals. Tarazan and I like the way should have been kept unreleased while Liquid Love is as sexy as it sounds. Virgin Ubiquity is essential to loyal Ayers fans and newbies to his work, while others will find this is the perfect CD for lying in a hammock under lot of shade and a cool breeze.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Buy - Even Better than Vol. 1.......2005-08-30

Roy has done it again. These unreleased gems could have held their own with any of his stuff from the albums back-in-the-day. "Holiday" tribute to MLK is my favorite, with "Funk In The Hole" a close 2nd. Overall the song selections are an eclectic mix of material that nicely represent Roy's musical genius and skillful production. The liner notes written by Roy leave a lot to be desired, and seem like he just threw them together at the last minute, adding very little backdrop -- the original production date/year for the tracks aren't even included (Sorry Roy - it had to be said!). Would I buy it again? Heck yeah! Go get Vol. 1 too if you don't already have it.

for any true roy ayers fans out there these virgin ubiquity albums are a must. as a whole, the content is better than most of the "ALBUMS" he released in the 70' and 80's. believe me, i own nearly everything roy has ever done. from the straight ahead stuff from the 60's, to the ubiquity years of the early 70's, to the height of his career in the latter 70's, to the leaner years in the late 80's and early 90's, to now. let me tell you all that now is awesome stuff. if you don't have it get it.

Hey, let me drop four letters on you all and that's it...
R.A.M.P.! Somebody please master this collection on CD already because I've been waiting for yeeeears to get "Daylight" on CD! I don't know what's up, but will someone please help me find this song at least...

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2004-05-19

Gilles Peterson played a lot of this album on Worldwide in March of 2003. Something like half the tracks are really good, but this album is so worth it. This is some of the smoothest music I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Grooves Guaranteed -- Can't Stop Listening!.......2004-03-05

I usually view "unreleased recordings" with suspicion. After all, if they weren't released in the first place, then something must have been wrong with them. Right?

In the case of "Virgin Ubiquity," song selections were culled from a massive amount of master tapes that Roy was able to keep back in the day (thanks to the negotiating of a shrewd lawyer). These songs are not throwaways or filler. In many cases, they even top the quality of material that Roy did release in the late 70s. And for this reason, "Virgin Ubiquity" is a holy grail for true Ayers (and even current acid jazz and neosoul fans), in both theory and reality.

Memorable songs include the perfect "Boogie Down," with an irresistable swirling groove that will make you wonder why Roy never released it. It's already a classic in my eyes. Then there's "Brand New Feeling," which stretches nearly 10 minutes long with the sound that Ayers fan clamor for. (Some minor vocal pitch issues and one small/amusing lyrics slip-up warrant its unreleased status.) The vocals by Sylvia Cox are truly passion-fueled and intense, and Roy's comments about her and why she split from the band (in the great liner notes) will increase the mystery and, perhaps, tragicness behind this powerful performance.

Virgin Ubiquity does an excellent job at spotlighting Roy's female vocalists, even more than his own vibes work. Especially in the case of Merry Clayton, the infamous 70s session singer, who sings lead on 6 of the CD's 13 cuts. (Other featured vocalists include Cox, Carla Vaughn and Dianne Ventner.) The potent, gruff-voiced Clayton shines on each track she touches -- especially on the William Allen-penned "Oh What a Lonely Feeling."

An earlier comment made that these songs sound like "Running Away" remakes is simply not true since most are more mellow or mid-tempo than dancefloor-oriented. So for fans who prefer Roy's uptempo stuff, this might be the only downfall.

If you are a fan of Ayers albums like "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," "Fever," "Let's Do It," "Searching" and everything else from '76 up to '82 (including the Ramp, Wayne Henderson & "Starbooty" releases), you'll find even more to love on "Virgin Ubiquity." You might even like it better than some of the aforementioned. Guaranteed.

4 out of 5 stars Esencialmente Roy.......2004-02-02
