Ballad albums can be tricky affairs. How do you create tempos that are sensuous but not sluggish? What makes a ballad moody and beautiful and not just boring? Those questions seem moot when the musicians involved are tenor-sax titan Michael Brecker, guitarist Pat Metheny, drummer Jack DeJohnette, pianist Herbie Hancock, and bassist Charlie Haden, but heavy hitters don't necessarily insure success. Nearness of You: The Ballad Book begins with Hancock's willowy "Chan's Song." Performed at a sleepy tempo, it is a languid introduction, even for an all-ballad album. Brecker and Metheny blow mighty solos, but the song remains passive. James Taylor guests on a mellow rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and on the title track. Taylor's yearning tenor is warm and expressive, but the band treats him with kid gloves, as if playing too closely might break the singer in half. Things look up on Joe Zawinul's "Midnight Mood," a twilight vehicle with sumptuous solos all around. Nearness is divided into Chapter One and Chapter Two, and Chapter Two really shines, particularly the original contributions by producer Metheny and Brecker. The entire ensemble becomes more involved and animated, with rapt solos on Brecker's "Incandescence" and Metheny's bittersweet "Sometimes I See" and "Seven Days." Nearness features ample performances, but for truly inspired ballad fare, check out singer Johnny Hartman's I Just Dropped by to Say Hello, or the quintessential Ballads, by John Coltrane. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars "I Can See Your Dreams. . .".......2007-01-27

"This is our book of ballads - instrumental and narrative stories devoted to the intimate exploration of the myriad aspects of our interpersonal ties, blossoming into various shades and colors by means of musical dialogue. Many heartfelt thanks to Pat, Herbie, Jack, Charlie and James for making this one of the most meaningful and fun experiences that I've ever had." ~ Michael Brecker, Liner Notes, March 2001 ~

I've had this CD for years and listening to it now brought tears to my eyes. Although I purchased it mainly for James Taylor's "The Nearness of You" and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," I was surprised after listening to it in its entirety that I totally enjoyed all the tunes. Mr. Brecker had been one of my favorites and one of the best saxophonists in the jazz scene and he figured prominently as a back-up musician on most of my jazz CDs from my collection. When I learned that he was suffering from cancer last year, I pulled this CD out from the shelf and started listening to its beauty again and amazingly, it touched me more deeply than the first time I listened to it. Just recently, he lost his battle and succumbed to cancer. His death is such a great loss to the music industry considering his incredible talent. My deepest sympathy and prayers are with his family. I feel for you and I know how it is to lose a loved one to cancer. May he rest in peace.

Released in 2001, this recording "Nearness of You: The Ballad Book," which he lovingly dedicated to his family: Susan, Jessica and Sam, presents some of his most notable recordings. Here, he is supported by great musicians such as James Taylor (vocals), Herbie Hancock (piano), Pat Matheny (guitars), Jack DeJohnette (drums) and Charlie Hayden (bass).

Mr. Brecker put all the tracks into three parts. Chapter One includes one of his original compositions "Incandescence," a very melodic tune "Nascente" written by Pat Matheny, "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" and "The Nearness of You" with James Taylor on vocals, and a very lovely tune "Midnight Mood." Chapter Two includes an Irving Berlin classic "Always," which is done in a very beautiful arrangement by Larry Goldings. I love the way he smoothly jazzified this evergreen. And the last part, which Mr. Brecker called "Epilogue" contains just one track - his original composition "I Can See Your Dreams." He wrote the beautiful and tuneful arrangement of this remarkable melody. From the opening note to the last, this tune simply shines through.

The beauty of this recording lies primarily on the excellent musicianship of the group, not to mention the exceptional arrangements written by Michael Brecker, Pat Matheny, Larry Goldings, Herbie Hancock, Gil Goldstein and Gil Evans. The group has created and harmonized layers and layers of beautiful and melodic sounds with their respective instruments.

A sentimental yet a great listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Long live Michael Brecker!.......2007-01-20

Michael Brecker, one of my all time favourite tenor saxophonists, sadly passed away a week ago today (on Saturday, January 13th 2007) after a long battle with leukaemia. Throughout his career, Brecker was nothing if not highly respected. I remember reading somewhere that he became the most emulated jazz saxophonist after John Coltrane. I believe that to be true. There's no doubt in my mind that Brecker was hugely influenced by Coltrane.

I have practically all his albums including the ones he released with his trumpeter brother Randy as The Brecker Brothers and the ones he put out with Warren Bernhardt, Peter Erskine, Eddie Gomez and Mike Mainieri as the group Steps Ahead. If I see that he's featured as a guest player on anyone's album it usually sways me into buying it.

But this is my all-time favourite CD by the man and to my knowledge, it's the first and only album of ballads that he made. He is joined by a group of jazz giants who obviously looked up to him (and all of whom he has played with at some time or other) - Jack DeJohnette on drums, Charlie Haden on bass, Herbie Hancock on piano and Pat Metheny on guitar. James Taylor even appears as a special guest vocalist on two tracks; his own composition "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and the Carmichael-Washington standard, "The Nearness of You". The album is produced by Pat Metheny and Steve Rodby.

There's not much else to say; the album does exactly what it says on the tin with few surprises, and provides well over an hour of soothing, yet interesting music. The album is subtitled "The Ballad Book" and is divided into two "chapters" of five songs each, with an "epilogue" of one song. I love every single one but my favourite of them all is the shimmering "Nascente". It's not every time Metheny uses his guitar synth for solos that I like the sound of it but here it's simply transcendent. When Hancock follows with his own formidable solo I'm not sure whether I want to cry or fly.

A great album for those long nighttime drives or for evenings alone in quiet contemplation. Brecker's left us a heap of great music but I'm sad to hear that he's gone. May his soul rest in peace.

2 out of 5 stars Skip the beauty, give me pretty.......2006-02-11

There is SO much potential in the lineup of this CD: the singular talents of the instrumentalists, the subtle and complex simplicity of the tunes, the proven chemistry of the musicians- well documented from numerous beautiful collaborations past, the history alone that these artists have been steeped in; but pretty is the password of the day here.
Romantic sounds for a candlelit dinner. Numerous candidates for any "best makeout tunes of all time" compilations. Even James Taylor's blessings to validate the safety factor of this project. Nearness of You has all this, and less.
Missing are fresh meaningful readings of the (beautiful) compositions, any hint of lyric urgency or that sense of voice that makes a jazz ballad sing. Now I know that Michael, Pat, Herbie, Charlie and Jack have paid their dues and have proven they're beautiful artists. Just don't look to The Ballad Book as evidence. You should buy this knowing the music is pretty and money is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A great idea, wonderfully executed........2005-07-31

I bought this album being a huge Metheny fan and it certainly lived up to my expectations. To be very honest, I was expecting something a little bit different, more in line with the stuff that Metheny plays with his group and so it took me a little time to appreciate its true beauty. But, over the last 2 weeks, the album has really grown on me. "Nascente" and "Sometimes I See" are just superb, wonderfully arranged, and with great solos. Metheny's note choice, on the whole, is exquisite as usual and so is Brecker's and Hancock's. James Taylor also sings wonderfully on his two appearances lending a distinct charm to the album. I would highly recommend this work to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars CD good, but I bought it for the wrong reason.......2005-07-06

The whole CD is good, but I'm a James Taylor addict and, when I heard the really good and mellow JT version of Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight on this album, I bought the album in a heart beat. I'm not that much of a sax fan, so while the jazz is really good, I really wanted the JT song...and found he recorded two on the album. Mixed blessing.

This cd by my favourite jazz pianist, the incomparable Miss Beegie Adair, is one of the collection of her cd's that I've either bought or ordered from Amazon, while I'm here in the US. This one is a collection of Hoagy Carmichael songs and features Georgia, Skylark, Stardust and my personal favoutite, Two Sleepy People. In all, there are 13 songs and each of them is a joy to hear as Beegie Adair delivers them with her own special style. I now can't wait until February when my other 5 will be delivered.

An excellent addition to our Beegee collection, with delightful renditions of old favorites. I never tire of listening to it. In fact, I find it even gets better over time.

Big fan of John Gary and purchased this, along with 2 other cd's. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars That Voice!.......2002-07-25

I had not listened to many of the selections on either of the albums featured in this dual CD for several years due to the fact that I had just about worn out my old vinyl albums. I experienced such a rush of past memories when I played this disc for the first time this week. I was taken back to a time when John's music was such a wonderful way to slow down and just enjoy life.

John Gary once described himself as a "baritone with a freakish range". It was just this "range" that first caught my ear. There are many examples on this album to bear out his description. His tenor range is strongly evident in several cuts, among them are "Hawaiian Wedding Song" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". The vocal strength that John possessed was absolutely amazing. He seemed to be able to effortlessly hold a note for an eternity. If you listen to selections such as "Beautiful" (John's personal favorite) or "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," you will find yourself totally lost in his incredible vocal interpretations.

Unfortunately, this album also reminds me that John has been gone almost five years now, and we must now content ourselves with his past work. But, in so doing, we are able to keep his memory alive and continue to introduce new people to the man and the voice that I have always cherished.

5 out of 5 stars John Gary fans, rejoice!.......2002-03-01

Your days of combing through used record shops and search services are coming to an end! This is one of 3 CD sets of two long out-of-print LPs each that Collectables, a Pennsylvania based company has just reissued. Whole albums, not just selected cuts, with the original liner notes.

Classic Gary cuts are all here, delivered in that warm, intimate, passionate style that set him apart from all of the rest - and he must have recorded just about every important love ballad that ever came from from Broadway and film during his heyday in the 60's. Fans of his TV show will appreciate hearing "Softly, as I Leave You" again too, the song that he closed each show with.

The "Nearness of You" portion of this disc has the added bonus of sumptuous string orchestra arrangements provided by the incomparable Gordon Jenkins, who also backed such greats as Cole and Sinatra. The entire 24 tracks run the emotional gamut - from the "just for you" intimacy of the "Hawaiian Wedding Song" to the final stirring reading of "You'll Never Walk Alone" with John operating at full throttle for a knock-out ending.

This is John Gary at his peerless best. Absolutely glorious singing!

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC JOHN GARY.......2002-02-10

That byline could probably describe any time John Gary opened his mouth. His astounding three octave range won over millions of listeners in the mid-60's, depsite the British Invasion and made his records sell worldwide. Sadly, he never reached stardom like a Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, per se. Today, the hopeful masses who have waited for John's work on CD can be satisfied. Two other such CDs are now available in a world where very little if any of John's work was released on CD. This CD presents two more of John's wonderful albums with highlights at every turn. John's reading of "ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE" from "My Fair Lady" is filled with emotion, and a lovely ending with one of John's trademark high notes. Abetted by the lush Gordon Jenkins Orchestra, John wistfully croons the evergreen "MY FOOLISH HEART" with spectacular results. It is Jenkins who also wrote the charts for other standouts here, "I WISH YOU LOVE" and one of Gary's signature heartbreaking closers, "SOFTLY, AS I LEAVE YOU". Other CDs (albiet the few out there) have given us some of the tracks found here, but this CD gives us for the very first time, the definitive reading of the Jerome Kern classic "ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE". Listen to John's plaintive singing and dramatic use of voice toward the end and you are hearing a master at work. Speaking of Kern, John also supplies us with the haunting "SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES" with similarly gorgeous results. I speak for the masses when I thank the good people at Collectable Records for making these CDs by John Gary at long last available!!

4 out of 5 stars Lockhart's Debut Recording with the Boston Pops.......2004-08-13

RUNNING WILD is collection of Glenn Miller favorites and is Keith Lockhart's debut recording with the Boston Pops Orchestra. The musical quality is good. While it does not demonstrate the style that Lockhart would later develop with the orchestra, it certainly offers glimpses of what is to come. Perhaps the recording's strongest tracks are the musical numbers with guests: John Pizzarelli and the King Singers, especially the album's rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo". One of Lockhart's greatest strengths is selecting guests to accompany the orchestra and this album is a foretaste of what is later to come, particularly on the Celtic and Mexican collections released later in Lockhart's tenure. While the album is good, and Lockhart seems to enjoy conducting these Big Band pieces, his rendition of "In the Mood" is missing something, which is surprising since this work is such a staple at Pops concerts, but even a not quiet the best rendition of any piece by the Boston Pops is still far better than much of what is available.

5 out of 5 stars "Runnin' Wild" will get you "In the Mood" for Big Band tunes.......2003-11-08

When John Williams stepped down as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra after 14 successful seasons, the talented young Keith Lockhart was chosen as his replacement. Looking more like a college freshman than music director of one of America's most famous orchestras, Lockhart has proved to be just as adept and popular as Williams and the late Arthur Fiedler.

1996's Runnin' Wild is a collection of songs made famous by Big Band era orchestra leader Glenn Miller, whose civilian and later Army Air Force bands provided audiences with music to dance to (and love to) before and during World War II. Before his mysterious death in December 1944, Miller's band and featured vocalists gave the world such beloved swing standards as "In The Mood," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "A String of Pearls," and his signature theme, "Moonlight Serenade."

Listen to this album, close your eyes, and the Boston Pops Orchestra transports you back to the 1940s, with young men in uniform dancing with either their wives, sweethearts, or USO girls to the fast-paced "Runnin' Wild"...gently swaying the sweet "A String of Pearls" (featured in the film The Glenn Miller Story)...or sharing that last sweet bit of lovemaking to the slow beat of "Moonlight Serenade."

Of the 16 selections, "Moonlight Serenade" is the one I am most familiar with, having heard it as incidental music or "source" material in so many World War II movies or documentaries. It's slow, gentle, romantic yet sensual, and it's the only "Glenn Miller" song actually written by the bandleader. Originally titled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep," it was a big hit in 1939 and was the theme song for both Miller's and Tex Beneke's bands. The Pops' performance of it captures its air of nostalgia perfectly, and the clarinet solo by Thomas Martin is simply fabulous.

Modern standards singer John Pizzarelli and The King's Singers show their stuff on several tracks, most vividly so in "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," which was another chart-topping hit for Miller in 1941, the year the U.S. entered World War II. Pizzarelli has a way of channeling the great vocalists of the era, with his easy-to-listen voice and flawless delivery. The King's Singers are wonderful backup in other songs, including "Serenade in Blue" and "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo."

As a soloist, Pizzarelli shines in the more romantic (and slower) "The Nearness of You," a song that might have been on a serviceman's mind when reading a letter from his wife or girlfriend.

Another sentimental favorite where Pizzarelli performs well is 1940's "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," a song introduced in Britain and popularized not only by Glenn Miller but also Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kay.

Several genres also get the Glenn Miller treatment, such as opera (Verdi's "The Anvil Chorus," from Il Trovatore), vaudeville ("My Blue Heaven") blues ("The St. Louis Blues March") and even Russian traditional songs ("Volga Boatmen").

So if you want to get "In the Mood" and have a good time listening to a fun Boston Pops Orchestra album, Runnin' Wild is definitely worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-11-02

I bought this CD three days ago and it hasn't left my CD player since. There is nothing like waking up and putting on "In the Mood" to start your day, or listening to "Moonlight Serenade" to end it.

4 out of 5 stars Okay, but lose the cover.......2000-05-31

The Pops are a Boston institution. They have been a tradition for many and familiar to most. I have been to the Pops probably as often as to Fenway Park. I like both and find great comfort in each.

What happens with much of what the Pops attempt here is goofy. The cover art, is I presume, similar to the old Arthur Fiedler covers where he wore a funny coat or hat and tried to look less symphonic and more silly. Give it up.

The strength of the Pops is the traditional, predictable format and arrangements that are as easy to identify as your own child. That too is the unfortunate part of the Pops. There needs to be a little something new here.

So if you enjoy the traditional string arrangements and percussion of the Pops this will not disappoint you. If you are trying to get a youngster excited about this music you might more easily find an elevator and listen to the musak.

Classical arrangements, novelty music and patriotic songs are the best the Pops can provide. The swing music just doesn't do it for me.

Runnin' wild? Maybe with a walker.

5 out of 5 stars Swing at its best!.......2000-01-08

I'll tell you a little story about this CD from Keith Lockhart. I'm a baby-boomer brought up on swing and am constantly looking for quality big band recordings. I bought this album several years ago when it was first released and I loved it. Whenever I played it at home, my 18 y/o daughter gave me the business about my "old fogey" music. One day, however, I happened to come home unexpectedly and there she was in the family room with "String of Pearls" at nearly full volume. I bought her the album when she went to college and she says that she's since converted nearly half the dorm to swing. This is probably the best recording of big band sounds ever. Also look at "Pops Stoppers" which is half big band tunes and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Both are excellent as well.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless virtuosity from a true jazz master.......2005-10-11

The tenor sax on this CD is absolutely masterful and is played with subtle nuances and self-effacing confidence and artistic seasoning that renders the jazz even more extraordinary. In "Come Rain or Come Shine" one immediately recognizes the genius of Wallace for invention in his improvisation. In "Willow Weep for Me" I swear to you that the sax not only wails but also gnashes its teeth. In the "Nearness of You," the title cut, the jazz is tender, seductive, heartbreaking and sweet beyond belief. The piano by Kenny Barron is remarkable in its sensibility and sheer technical accomplishment and blend in partnership with other players. Bennie Wallace stands with the great ones in his virtuosity on tenor sax in this CD. If you love jazz that captures in its performance the fullness of melody with all the intelligence and passion that the genre was meant to offer, this extraordinary and timeless CD belongs in your jazz collection. It will play as beautifully in 50 or 100 years as it does now.

Bennie Wallace is an unsung hero of the tenor (see my Listmania of 25 Unsung Tenor Sax Heros). I've described his unique tone as Ben Webster sitting on a nest of fire ants. His playing is sensuous, virile, tender, humorous, and often very outside. Like David Murray, Wallace is a master of instantaneous register leaps from the lowest notes to altissima. This can make his music squirmy and unsettling at times, but not in this, his finest session to date.

His drumless trio features the great Kenny Barron on piano and Eddie Gomez on bass. Gomez replaced Bill Evans' first bassist, Scott Lafarro, at the dawn of the 60's. He is now a sage of his instrument, playing with a tasteful yet profound resonance on the level of Ron Carter or Charlie Haden. Barron has done precisely this kind of recording before: intimate duets with tenor legend Stan Getz (See 'People Time'). He knows how to listen, to respond, and to exalt the melody without getting sentimental. Barron is perhaps the most mature ballad accompanist for any tenor player, the perfect choice for Wallace here.

Like Sonny Rollins and the fore-mentioned David Murray, Wallace loves to deconstruct well-known melodies into threads of sound so surprising that they force you to discover new dimensions of old songs. (In fact, one of his best early recordings is called 'Old Songs.') Wallace has sometimes performed this task with manic eccentricity, but this CD is the work of a mature artist who does not need to startle anyone. His gentle unravelling of classic ballads becomes a meditation on the nature of music itself. This is a quiet but important statement by an under-rated giant of the tenor saxophone. No serious jazz fan should miss it.
