Product Description
Johnny Desmond sang with Bob Crosby, Gene Krupa, and Glenn Miller's military band, and throughout the 1950s was featured on the Breakfast Club radio show. He also acted regularly on TV and in films, and starred on Broadway in the hit show Say Darling. The bulk of the material on this CD was recorded in the early 1950s, including novelty numbers typical of the 50s, some standards and three of Desmond's Top Ten hits - "Woman," "Play Me Hearts and Flowers" and "The Yellow Rose of Texas." 25 of 28 tracks on CD for the first time!

I wish I could give it 10 stars!.......2007-04-30
I bought Bleach the Best for the CD alone. The CD is wonderful!!!! My children and I love the songs and have a great time. In the car or doing dishes at home, this CD has music that gets you pumped to watch the series! The CD songs are the openings and closings for the show and it is great to hear them in their true form. The CD set I purchased from Amazon came with the DVD for Region 2 or for Japanese DVD players, pin-ups of the captians and Renji along with a booklet with the lyrics of the songs in Japanese. As far as I am concerned, it is worth every penny!
Best Anime CD in awhile.......2007-04-19
I love this CD! I watched the first 118 episodes of the show and grew to LOVE the theme songs. I wanted them so bad but Amazon has too high a price for this cd, so I bought it used from one of the sellers. I got the cd in perfect condition for half the listed price for a new one, and just wanted to comment on one of the previous feedbacks about the DVD issues.
First off, this listing is for the CD ONLY, at least for the used copies. There is another listing with the CD/DVD combo here on Amazon. So if you want the DVD as well, make sure to look at both listings carefully or you will pay the same price and only get half of the packege, unless you buy used.
But I do say that the price is worth it to fans of the show who are farther along then the english dubbed episodes, because many of the theme songs are from later episodes. Hope this helps anyone interested in the CD.
Greatest CD ever!.......2007-04-05
I love this CD so much. It's all I listen to right now. I play it in the car on the way to work and then put it into my computer and listen to it alla day at work. The artwork on the cover is very cool too. Well worth the price!
A Must Have For Bleach Fans.......2006-12-20
I managed to pick this up in Japan the day after it was released. What a great find! The CD contains MOST of the openers & closers to the Bleach Episodes that have been aired in Japan (they're well past Episode 100 there). The DVD (Region 2 DVD) has the accompanying "clean" opening and closing anime set to the music. Also included is a set of pin-ups and a book with Lyrics, Credits, and messages from Noriyuki Abe and Tite Kubo (all written in Japanese). A brief warning about Region 2 DVDs... they won't play in a regular DVD Player purchased in North America. You can play them on a computer's DVD-ROM reader, but be careful! You can only change the Region of a DVD-ROM reader 4 or 5 times before the setting becomes permanent.

It's invigorating to hear such a wide disparity between the music of Gov't Mule and the trusty blues/Southern rock of guitarist Warren Haynes's other full-time project, the Allman Brothers Band. Rooted firmly in the '70s riff-based power assault of bands such as Free, Mountain, and Humble Pie, with Haynes's gruff yet soulful vocals front and center, the Mule plow through 72 minutes of meat-and-potatoes, tougher-than-leather rock with the determination of their ornery moniker. The opening thump of "Mr. High & Mighty" will quickly separate the men from the boys as the band charges into one of their most potent and pointed tracks, helped enormously by Danny Louris's sinister organ fills. The disc continues with muscular material such as "Like Flies," "Streamline Woman," and the cowbell-driven "Brand-New Angel," that keep the thudding-guitar-and-drums attack at a high boil. Haynes borrows a page from Allmans co-lead guitarist Derek Trucks in the slide-powered worldbeat intro to "Brighter Days," but then it's back to business as the song transforms into a Jeff Beck Group-styled pile-driving scorcher. Things simmer down slightly for the sinuous reggae of "Unring the Bell," a few brawny ballads like "Child of the Earth," and the closing funk of the album's only instrumental, "3-String George," on which the Mule tap into an entirely credible Booker T. & the MG's vibe. The average tune is over five minutes, with the lovely yet cautionary "Endless Parade" clocking in at nearly twice that, but don't look for winding jams here. Rather, Gov't Mule have crafted their most dense and representative album yet, filled with steely licks and explosive melodies you'll be playing air guitar to after the first listen. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
Great Music, Annoying Lyrics.......2007-06-08
Gov't Mule's latest project has a lot of exciting things going on. Warren Haynes' guitar work is really fun, lots of great music with powerful drums, wailing Hammond B3's and husky vocals. We hear lots of catchy guitar riffs and fantastic solo work, especially on tracks like "Brighter Days," "Like Flies" and "Mr. High and Mighty." The biggest problem that I have with the lyrics are that Warren Haynes' lyrics are far from amicable. Most of the songs are very accusatory, preachy and jaded, most notably tracks like "Unring the Bell," "Nothing Again" and "Endless Parade." They are the kind of lyrics that really just rub me the wrong way. "Unring the Bell" and "Endless Parade" both drag on past the 8 minute mark without needing to. We get the point after about 4 minutes, but the Mule has to be so stubborn to get the point across even more and then when they run out of things to say, they resort to unnecessary extended jams that do not develop at all. While the keyboard and guitar interplay at the end of "Endless Parade" is interesting, nothing really develops. They just keep going on one chord at a static intensity level and eventually fizzle out at the end of the track. While there are a few standout tracks on this album, it's really not worth it to grab the whole album. Snatch the good ones from from a track-by-track download service and forget the rest. If you want to take my advice grab these:
Mr High and Mighty
Brand New Angel
Streamline Woman
Like Flies
Brighter Days
(Three String George) maybe if you want to hear a good instrumental jam DOES develop
If only the other tracks could be good as this. I heard Mr High and Mighty on their website and let's just say that my expectations were pretty high from that track. Unfortunately this album didn't really meet them. This album is really a 3.5 star rating out of 5.
Mighty INDEED!.......2007-05-19
Since completing the "Deep End" trilogy in 2003, Gov't Mule's shown a move away from the liberally-sprinkled cover tunes that have graced past albums. It's the second album, following 2004's "Deja Voodoo," to feature the post-Alan Woody permanent lineup of Warren Haynes, Matt Abts and new members Danny Louis (keyboards) and Andy Hess (bass). Warren's single greatest strength, ironically, is also the trait that could work most against him (but never does)...he's a virtual encyclopedia of late-sixties and seventies album-oriented rock. Looking back at the Mule albums' cover tunes lays the influences bare: Free, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Zappa, Deep Purple, ZZ Top...add the list of "fellow travelers" the band has associated with in revolving-door guest appearances and you have a wealth of talent and level of diversity not even attempted by most modern bands. And unlike some bands who have worn their influences on their sleeves, Gov't Mule is always about the music, never about posing and celebrity. "Mr. High & Mighty" is 72 minutes of tight, taut, muscular music. From the riff-driven title track (a mix of Humble Pie / Faces with a few Led Zeppelin time signatures thrown in for fun) to the groove-based, Band Of Gypsys-shaded "Brand New Angel" that rips apart at the seams at the 3-minute mark with a serpentine, fuzzed-out guitar solo, followed by a fuzz-wah spraying over the last two minutes of the track, to the slow, plaintive "Child Of The Earth (Grand Funk Railroad's Mark Farner would probably give his right arm to pull off a track this good), to the "Ron Wood sits in with Led Zep" epic "Brighter Days" to the nine-minute, Albert King-styled "Endless Parade" to the Little Feat-styled "3 String George," there's so much to like on "High And Mighty" that picking a favorite is flat-out impossible.
One of their better efforts.......2007-05-12
I'm definitely a Govt Mule fan and have bought most of their CD's. This one is very good. My favorites are the 6th & 7th tracks.
Love that Govt Mule Sound.......2007-01-10
This is the Best overall CD That the Mule has done so-far. The addition of a Keyboard has enhanced their total sound.
High Standards.......2007-01-05
Nicely done album. Interesting interview with Warren Haynes describes technical aspects in Guitar Player magazine.

Good J-Pop.......2006-10-14
I also bought this because I heard their Ichirin No Hana song on the opening credits of one season of Bleach.
Not always as driving/hard/intense as I was hoping, but it's good, solid music that occasionally dips from just rock into hard and driving. The female vocals are more j-pop-like. The male vocals, when they come through, are more likely to be yelling or screaming rock/metal, which I like.
Although the CD was not as overall hard as I had hoped, I am happy with it and enjoy listening to it. =)
Rock 'n' Roll.......2006-06-20
Great band. I first heard their music when watching the anime series "Bleach". The hardest J-pop music I've heard so far, they have vocals similar to Evanescence with music similar to Stabbing Westward and other rock bands. If you like "Ichirin no Hanna" (one of the theme songs from Bleach) you'll love this cd. A little rap can't even mar this solid hit.

Album Description
"A remarkable recording." - REPERTOIRE
The nature of Alexander's Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritic prize.
Customer Reviews:
Spirited performance of charming work.......2007-03-10
This performance of Alexander's Feast is, in my opinion, exactly right for the work; beautiful, clear voices singing the solos with good diction, a lovely balance in the small chorus, and superb playing of appropriate instruments for the piece and for the period. The notes on the flyer are also excellent, presenting the background and intention of the work.
Alexander's Feast - English version.......2006-02-26
This recording is a very complete version of Alexander's Feast, following the composer's practice of inserting other pieces to create a performance of appropriate length. Excellent soloists, orchestra, and chorus. A high quality recording.
One of Handel's great works.......2005-11-19
I just attended a live performance of Alexander's Feast and I saw many people who probably never heard anything else than Messiah, suddenly finding out that there is more to Handel than Hallelujah chorus. This music is exciting and original, you may know several arias like "War he said is toil and trouble" or "Revenge!" but it is great as a complete work. It was written for St. Cecilia's Day celebration, then re-written several times, but it remains as a beautiful example of Handel's mastery in choral composition and writing showcase arias. The soloists are great, especially Ian Partridge, and the chorus is outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of one of Handel's great works.
Handel's Great "Feast" in an Impeccable Rendition.......2005-08-22
"Alexander's Feast," Handel's 1736 setting of Dryden's ode in honor of St. Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music) is a masterpiece and a delight, but its odd length - too long for a mixed program, too short for a full evening - gave Handel trouble and apparently still presents a problem: this is at present the only recording of this inspired work in the catalogue, though some good ones have come and gone. Fortunately, this reissue of the Sixteen's 1990 version is first-rate, in fact the best I ever recall hearing, with chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor all in top form. Furthermore, music director Harry Christophers has wisely chosen to include the two concerti - one for harp, the other for organ - that Handel inserted in his original performances. Not only do they lengthen the piece to a satisfactory 115', they serve a satisfactory dramatic purpose by representing respectively the power of music in its pagan form - the bard Timotheus's lyre represented by the harp - and Christian - Cecilia's (apocryphal) organ. Both receive sparkling interpretations here.
If you enjoy such Handel works as "L'Allegro..." and "Acis and Galatea," you will certainly enjoy "Alexander's Feast," which finds the composer in peak form, responding with eagerness to the high quality of the English verse before him. And it's hard to imagine a better way to get to know it than this wonderful performance.

Japanese Rock.......2007-05-13
This is single/title CD for the third of the Bleach (anime) opening songs.
Ichirin no hana means literally Ichi(one) rin(counter word for flowers[no meaning]) no (of) hana (flower), so the title litterally means "One flower" though the fansubbers and translators for the series tended towards "Lone Flower" or "Single Flower" for the more poetic translation.
The track listings are (in romanji):
1) Ichirin no hana
2) Warped Reflections
3) Ichirin no hana - huge hollow mix -
4) Ichirin no hana (less vocal track)
Fair warning that this is the full version of the song, which is significantly longer than the TV cut for the intro song, mostly due to a large guitar instrumental section. The second track is another song by the same group, I suppose meant to help push some of their other work. Warped Reflections is a bit more j-pop typical, fast beat, and the yelling vocal is cut back a rather lot so that it's not blasting out too much. The third track is just another mix of the song, which I do not like better than the original, and the last track is a karaoke track for Ichirin.
This group is definitely a slightly harder rock group than most people tend to expect, especially from those who are used to j-pop. Most of their songs consist of really rather good guitar and base combo, good background drums, and an alto female vocal occasionally joined by a tenor male backup. Almost every song has parts with a male roar/yeller (I'm not entirely certain if this is the same man who does the occasional male vocals or not), but he generally isn't put in the foreground of the song, instead generally blended back a little with the music going on in the background so that the yell doesn't overwhelm.

Good collection of German Mass Lieder arrangements........1999-10-19
This recording of Martin Luther's German Mass Lieder was done in the 1960's. Some the songs from the Mass are monophonic, some of the other hymns are in stereo. It is a good recording, crisp and clear, even the mono sections. A good supplement for any reformation music collection.
A representative selection of Luther's music.......1999-09-09
This disc is a relatively definitive collection of Martin Luther's sacred music. It contains his Lutheran mass, plus many of his chant hymns, including "A Mighty Fortress."

Zez Confrey (1895-1971) may not be a household name, but his 1921 masterpiece "Kitten on the Keys" certainly is. The Illinois-born composer studied the classics growing up, but somehow the temptation of Vaudeville sneaked its way into his compositions and he found success writing catchy ragtime miniatures with goofy names ("Wise Cracker Suite," "Dizzy Fingers," "Blue Tornado"). Republic of Georgia pianist Eteri Andjaparidze performs 24 of Confrey's works with technical perfection and plenty of spirit--two requirements for these compositions--but sounds a tad robotic on some numbers. Between "Kitten" and 1959's "Fourth Dimension," Confrey explored blues, rags, Latin rhythms, and--of course--jazz, but the real highlight here is a slow number, the four-movement Moods of a New Yorker. In sum, this a great tribute featuring great music, perfect for fans of George Gershwin, Ferde Grofé, Jelly Roll Morton, and Joseph Lamb. --Jason Verlinde

Oh, Kitten...it's a Must Have.......2004-12-29
Hats off to Naxos for releasing this absolutely perfect tribute to Zez Confrey - it was high time, someone had to do it, and Naxos has done Confrey real justice. One would expect caricature of his work, rather than the respectful, honest, accurate renditions of his work featured on this album.
I discovered my love for Confrey thanks to the Aeolian Hall Birth of Rhapsody in Blue album (another of my reviews covers that great one), which featured a small selection of his compositions. The distinct, unique sound of his work snagged me immediately, and so I was thrilled to come upon this little Naxos treat.
Every piece on the album is sheer delight, but several do stand out from the rest. "Kitten on the Keys" (Confrey's most famous composition, here done full justice), "Meandering" (which just glides and lilts along like feathers on a breeze), "Kinda Careless" (a sensuous, seductive little number), "Yokel Opus" (a snappy little foxtrot), "Coaxing the Piano" (which seems almost an homage to 'Twelfth Street Rag', in a skewed way), "Movie Ballet" (which sounds exactly like its title would suggest), and "Rhythm Venture" (so gracefully syncopated, it's practically a marvel).
Any and all Confrey and jazz fans should consider this album as required listening, and well worth owning. The price alone is reason enough - you cannot go wrong with Naxos' rates. But even if it were four times the price, it would still be a bargain.
Almost , Nearly, perfect.......2003-10-25
Wonderful selection of pieces, most of these are lesser-known Confrey and tend to represent his more "Serious" music. Perhaps because of that the pianist (a superb performer) tends to emphasize their concert qualities over their popular music aspects. This is only a tiny complaint. There's a lot of excellect music here, and at Naxos' low price it's a bargan.
Much more than Kitten On the Keys.......2002-05-16
If you thought an album of Zez Confrey music would be track after track like Dizzy Fingers or Kitten On the Keys, you are in a for a pleasant surprise with this superb CD.
The performances of the said party pieces are fast, furious and fun, but there are also some great blues renditions, and some lyrical, reflective pieces.
I would have preferred if the CD had included a few more of the well-known pieces like My Pet, Poor Buttermilk and You Tell 'Em, Ivories, but the many pieces I had never heard of are interesting, and are played beautifully.
Zany yet poetic!.......2000-09-04
Once again, in its "American Classics" series, Naxos has pulled a pleasant surprise rabbit out of the hat. Zez Confrey must be a new name for virtually everyone, unless they are well past my own age, and I don't go back quite that far. The name was certainly new for me, but a few of the pieces on this disc brought memories flooding back, most likely because my parents once had them coupled on an ancient 78 shellac.
Confrey (1895 - 1971) had been relegated pretty much to the dustbin of history before this release. But he did have his days in the sun between the two world wars. Undoubtedly his brightest moment was when he shared billing with George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman on the occasion of the premiere for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, where Confrey had the stage in the first half of the concert and Gershwin in the second. For the most part, after that February, 1924 "An Experiment in Modern Music" concert of Whiteman's, the paths of Gershwin and Confrey began to diverge; Gershwin was, to put it simply, an overnight success.
All of the music on this album is fun, and virtually all of it demands virtuosic pianistic ability, which Confrey must certainly have possessed. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane, back to the popular music in the first third of the previous century. There are pieces which have clear roots in ragtime, embellished upon and brought forward by a few decades, and at least a selection or two which sound very much like Gershwin preludes in their "bluesy" feel. It's also clear that Confrey was not unaware of the classical music of the period, because a few of the pieces capture the idioms of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel of that period (although they soon veer off into "Confrey territory"). If you listen carefully, you'll even hear a passing reference or two to Chopin. But, like the Rachmaninoff and Ravel musical allusions, these too are in fact just "passing references."
But most of the album is pure Confrey-style pianistic wizardry: Fleet fingers, crossing hands, syncopations and rhythmic "irregularities" with the colorfully descriptive titles of "Meandering", "Coaxing the Piano" and "Stumbling." And his two most famous pieces (which, probably, many of us have never heard), "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers." (In fact, it was "Dizzy Fingers" and "Stumbling" which must have been the coupling on that ancient 78, because they were immediately recognizable.)
Eteri Andjaparidze is an excellent technician in this work, which can be very demanding of technique if it is to be pulled off properly. By and large, she does very well by it. In particular, she succeeds in capturing the passing allusions to the classical piano music of the time. If I had my druthers, I might ask for a little more panache, or insouciance, if you like, in the Confrey specialities noted in the previous paragraph. But who can quibble, especially at the Naxos price, without appearing to be a piker?
Neat stuff for a refreshing change of pace, with an opportunity to hear an hour's worth of music by someone who had been ignored for too long. That's a "get it" recommendation!
Bob Zeidler
Brilliant!.......2000-03-22
I have no idea what Jason Verlinde meant by saying that Eteri Andjaparidze sounds "a tad robotic" on certain pieces on her new Zez Confrey album; indeed, the Republic of Georgia pianist sounds absolutely marvelously free in her interpretations. I cannot hear anything "robotic" at all in her playing. She approaches the intricate syncopations of Confrey's music with dazzling style. She is technically proficient enough to take Confrey's tempi at a furious pace, when necessary, in pieces such as "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers," and to create a sustained, beautiful flow to the music in such "impressionistic" pieces as "Sparkling Waters" and "Mighty Lackawana." The selections which will remind the listener of Art Deco New York in the 1920's and 1930's, are taken at exactly the right tempo, and Ms. Andjaparidze syncopates the rhythms in a sparkling manner. I was utterly amazed at how a pianist, trained in the Republic of Georgia, could evoke the rhythms and style of American music of this type. But she does! In addition, the piano has been recorded beautifully, with sparkling tone at the treble end, and a rich, full bass. I purchased this CD a few hours after reading Frank Behrens' review. It is a wonderful addition to my collection of American music. I urge you to hear this excellent release. Naxos is to be commended for making it available.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22
This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:
Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.
Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".
Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".
The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"
Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".
The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!
Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16
This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).
"film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13
Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.
Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.
Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.
Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.
On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.
The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.
Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.
When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!
