Septuagenarian Jamaican guitarist Ranglin has seen and done it all. A long-time big band player, he is also widely credited with having invented ska, an infectious shuffling rhythm that presaged rock-steady, reggae, ragga and practically everything that has emerged from Jamaica since. A master of smoothly melodic instrumental music, he is comfortable with large or small combos and is equally gracious whether he is acting as as a lead player or sideman. His long study of American jazz has informed his arrangements with an urban sophistication as redolent of New York City's Harlem or 52nd Street as downtown Kingston. But his sound also encompasses an endearing squareness, a mainstream 60s soundtrack vibe that narrowly misses becoming a more evolved species of elevator music. The album recalls festive Island holidays of yore, when pastel-clad tourists enjoyed long rum drinks and a water view while dancing all night to the world's best hotel band. With Bo Pee on rhythm guitar and Robbie Lyn on keyboards. --Christina Roden

If there's irony in the fact that the founding fathers of surf rock the Ventures hail from quarters not exactly renowned as bastions of sun-drenched wave-riding (Portland, Oregon, and Tacoma, Washington), it only stands to reason that their inspirations weren't exactly baggy-clad and bushy-blond-coiffed, either (Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy). But those unlikely roots did indeed spawn a 40-year career for the band as international stars and, more important, instrumental rock's first and foremost preservationists.

This album replicates much of the Ventures' longtime tour repertoire, drawing on their own considerable hits ("Walk, Don't Run," "Perfidia," "Hawaii Five-O") as well as covers that range from Richard Rodgers ("Slaughter on 10th Ave.") to prime '60s bands like the Surfaris ("Wipe Out"), Marketts ("Out of Limits"), and Astronauts ("Baja"). All are performed with the verve and solid craftsmanship that has long characterized the band. Longtime fans should note the presence of guitarist Nokie Edwards (the band's most fabled soloist from their heyday) on most of the tracks, as well as Leon Taylor, who ably fills the drum throne of his late father, Mel. Later guitarist Gerry McGee's Nashville-influenced licks are featured on "Five-O" and "Bambora," with former Steely Dan-Doobies fretman Jeff "Skunk" Baxter also taking a solo turn on the latter. While some can't quite measure up to the originals, this collection often succeeds on the band's still-driving momentum and the obvious joy they continue to find in the material. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Excellent update of some instrumental classics........2007-02-20

I have been a Ventures fan since the early 60's and own several of their other CD's. This is my new favorite, with an excellent selection of songs and a great sound quality. I do have two minor complaints. "Walk Don't Run 64", while quite good is not quite as good as the original version and I've always found The Ventures version of "Pipeline" slightly disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Just what our pool needed!.......2005-08-08

The Aquatics Director wanted the atmosphere at our club pool to provide a "California Summer" feel. The Surfin' sounds of the Ventures really hit the spot...and made me feel young again!

5 out of 5 stars Collector's Gold.......2005-03-09

Whether you are an "X-Generation" music lover or a classic "Baby Boomer", this album will be a welcome addition to any guitar lover's collection. Crisp, Clear and Vintage.

4 out of 5 stars The musicians preserve the original style........2004-06-09

Walk Don't Run '64 is an astonishing composition, and abundantly easy on the ears. Like many of the tunes by the Beatles, Walk Don't Run '64 is simple, and playable by countless high school students. Moreover, as with the Beatle tunes, the sum of what is set forth in Walk Don't Run '64 is greater than its parts. Walk Don't Run '64 on this compilation is slightly different than the original, and I tend to prefer the original. In the current version, the opening bass line is essentially a series of percussive notes, with a sound similar to the percussive notes found in Kraftwerk's Computer World. In other words, the opening bass notes tend to lack a clearly defined position on the musical scale -- the bass player's palm was pressed against the string, muffling it to a greater extent in the current version than in the original. Another difference is that the opening drum beat contains a subtle triplet, and the guitar arpeggios contain an added trill. Moreover, in the ending in the current version, the expected "signature" tremelo is absent. Continuing with the description of the current version of Walk Don't Run '64, the bass line is a bit beefier than found on the originally recorded vinyl. Fortunately, the subtle accompaniment of the second guitar is preserved, and the chirpy, Del Shannon-style organ accompaniment and organ lead are magnificently preserved. By preserved, I mean the current style is the same as in the original release of Walk Don't Run '64.

Most or all of the other songs are a wonder, and best of the genre -- the musically simple and musically primitive genre known as: "surf songs." Even impatient teenagers will have little trouble learning by heart the fine, jazzy, lead guitar riffs from this album. Out Of Limits contains the castanets that you remember from the original. Penetration and Pipeline are guitar powerhouses. The Ventures' Wipe Out does justice to the whimpy version originally done by the Surfaris. A final note: This is not a recreation of the entire, original Ventures' Surfin' album, so please don't expect to find all the songs found on that album. Only a couple of songs from the Ventures' Surfin' album are found in the present production. I do miss Windy and Warm, and Diamonds, from that earlier album. Lonely Surfer, noted for its catchy but tediously repeated tune, is a fine member of this compilation. The Ventures' version lacks the instrumental buildup found in Jack Nitzsche's original (strings and horns), thus making one more aware of this number's repetitiveness.

Again, it came as a relief that the musicians had preserved the original style of these surf songs. Thankfully, there was no attempt to convert the songs into dance, disco, or techno numbers. I only saw the Ventures once. This was at Merlyn's on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin. During intermission, Nokie Edwards made his way through the audience and, in passing by, politely placed his hand on my shoulder and then continued on through the crowd. And so, it was at that one, brief moment in 1982 or 1983, that I had the hand of an actual Rock-God on my shoulder.

Children tend to like the Ventures due to the catchy tunes, the pleasant bell-tone sound of the Mosrite guitars used by the Ventures, and the total absence of mushy lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Surf is definitely UP!.......2003-04-08

This disk is highly recommended for anyone who really grooves on the inspiring sounds of surf guitar. I bought this by accident because I looking for a disk with "Pipeline" and "Slaughter on 10th Avenue" the other tunes weren't important at the time. Well I was in for a surprise! Just the three-song run from "Penetration" to "Mr. Moto" to "Out of Limits" is enough to turn any landlubber into a devoted surf head. As far as the people who think that the newer recording sound is not authentic as compared to the old noisy scratchy originals.... Your all wet...This is the bomb. Look out Dick Dale theres a lot of variety here not just Spanish sounding songs with single string leads......

5 out of 5 stars Origins of cool surf.......2006-08-23

I had the cassette version of this albumn years ago and this CD has additional tracks. CD contains very cool 60s surf instrumentals, some of which were used in "Pulp Fiction" in the mid-90s which led to a revival of instrumental surf. I occasionally serve as a guest DJ on an eclectic show on community radio and use the instrumental selections when I do an all-surf show. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Surf song critique.......2005-08-18

The song by the Trade Winds,New York's a Lonely Town (When You're the Only Surfer Boy Around)is well worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta take that one last ride.......2004-04-23

This is a great CD featuring some of the greatest surf hits of the '60s. Eleven of the tracks are instrumentals and seven of them feature vocals. I know that some people don't consider vocal songs to be "real" surf music, but I disagree. I love the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and the rest. Recommended as a great starter for those with an interest in surf music.

4 out of 5 stars Looks like a good 1 CD compilation.......2003-02-18

I have not purchased this CD. However, it looks like a distillation of the 2 album collection titled Golden Summer from the 70s. Looks to be an excellent 1 CD overview of the top songs from early 60s surf music for those individuals that do not want the expense of the 4-CD set Cowabunga.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd Purchase.......2001-07-21

I left my copy of this CD at my brother's house a few weeks ago, my kids can't make through the summer without it but I don't have the heart to take it back from him. So here goes, 2nd purchase.

Seeking to Capitol-ize on their local L.A. indie-label novelty hit, "Surfin'," the Beach Boys and their nascent sound (tales of innocent SoCal hedonism set to equal parts doo-wop vocal influences and Chuck Berry licks) were produced on these initial releases by the A&R exec who signed them, Nik Venet. But if Brian Wilson's production genius was yet untapped, his songwriting knack, trademark arrangements, and soaring falsetto were already coming to the fore, even on Surfin' Safari, the band's hastily recorded, low-budget debut album--"Surfin'," "Surfin' Safari," and "409" are ample testament to his hitmeister potential. Released just five months later, Surfin' USA both insured the band's national appeal and testified to the rapid development of their harmonies on cuts such as "Farmer's Daughter" and "Lana." The band sounds more confident throughout, and Wilson hints at the greatness to come with the moody ballad "The Lonely Sea." The flip side to Wilson's fragile emotionalism is, of course, Mike Love's nasal, fun-seeking twang; those voices revolving--often tensely--around a hub of incomparable harmony became one of rock's most indelible archetypes. These are the humble, charmingly awkward beginnings of that legend. Three unreleased bonus cuts are also featured: "Cindy, Oh Cindy," "The Baker Man" (a nursery rhyme take on the Olympics' "Hully Gully"), and the nautical "Land Ahoy." The latter two tracks are notable as Brian's official producing debut. This twofer edition features comments by Brian and the astute liner notes of music historian David Leaf. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Where the Beach Boys all began.......2007-01-19

Again, it is wonderful to have these classic LP's re-mastered with the sound fresh and vibrant, minus all of the snap, crackle, and pop of an old record. When you listen to these CD's you are reminded that these guys started off as a bunch of fresh-faced, young high school boys. Basically a super-talented local garage band that rented equipment to make a demo. They came from a musically talented family, but no one then knew exactly what a genius Brian Wilson would ultimately turn out to be. In addition to the hit singles, you will recognize there are some songs that are slightly rough musically & vocally. But the potential is clear and the talent shines through the immaturity. With every new album they made you could hear the quantum leaps they were making in musical maturity. It is fun to remember where their journey began back in the early 60's, and it is a reminder to all of us that were fortunate to grow up in So. California back then, of great times past. Get it as an essential part of your collection and fondly remember.

3 out of 5 stars Knock it off........2006-09-11

This CD features the Beach Boys first two albums.

Surfin' Safari was their first album, released in the wake of "Surfin' Safari" being a hit single. It also features "Surfin' Safari"'s great b-side "409", as well as the group's legendary first single "Surfin'" (although the track was sped up for the album). Some other good songs include "County Fair", "Ten Little Indians" and "Chug-a-Lug". The rest of the album isn't all that great.

Surfin' USA was their second album, released after the title song became a smash hit. It's b-side "Shut Down", which was a hit in it's own right, is naturally included on the album. Oddly, five of the twelve tracks on the album are instrumentals. They are decent, but the Beach Boys weren't the best surf instrumental group around. As for the rest of the songs with lyrics, "Farmer's Daughter" and "Lonely Sea" are pretty good, the rest aren't so good.

The CD adds three bonus tracks of songs recorded at the same sessions as their first two albums. These songs weren't good enough to be included on the albums, which is obvious once you hear them. This CD doesn't feature the Beach Boys at their best, but it does show them on their way to becoming one of the all time great rock and roll groups. If you want to hear where the legend began, check it out.

5 out of 5 stars WELL, WELL WORTH BUYING.......2005-10-09

Don't listen to any of the clowns on here giving these albums a low rating. There are some real gems on here that were not hits and you will hear Brian's genius in it's rawest form from Denis singing Miss America to Mike on County Fair. I now have all of the Beach Boys albums and each one is a treasure with a lot of hidden surprises on them and these are no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Come On A Safari With Us!.......2005-04-29

This is where it all began. Having tasted local success on the Candix label (following a few weeks on "X"), Hawthorne California's favorite sons were now ready to take on America.

Surfin' Safari, their first Capitol Records album is unlike any other Beach Boys record. Take away the classics: Surfin', Surfin' Safari and 409 - and you are still left with better than average fillers for a rock 'n' roll album from 1962. What is unusual is we hear the Beach Boys performing songs that might have just as easily been recorded by Randy & The Rainbows, the Tokens, or the Duprees. They are not uniquely "Beach Boys".

Since The Beach Boys seem to have always been with us, it's easy to forget that they ranged in age from 13 to 20 when they recorded these songs. A remarkable accomplishment.

An even greater accomplishment is that they recorded the Surfin' U.S.A. album less than a year later. The Beach Boys sound is cemented with Surfin' U.S.A. and Shut Down. The vocals are crisp and confident - and Brian is at the helm. It's summer magic.

But is this really a 5-star two-fer CD? You bet yer burd! The Beach Boys were as far ahead of the curve as Berry Gordy was with Motown, and Brian Wilson would prove to be a greater genius than his idol, Phil Spector. There was nothing in American rock & roll that even approached what these guys were doing in this pre-Beatles era.

3 out of 5 stars Prototype Beach Boys.......2005-03-19

Throughout 2001 Capitol Records went through the Beach Boys catalogue re-issuing them all in re-mastered sound using the best-available masters, with extensive liner notes and usually two albums plus bonus tracks on each release. In the early years, Capitol managed to squeeze a large number of albums out of the group and there is a steep learning curve as the group became more proficient and mature, and Brian Wilson's songwriting, arranging and production skills evolved.

Surfin' Safari (1962) was the band's first album, rushed out in the wake of the success of the title track as a hit single and its hot-rod B-side, 409, replete with the sound effects of a 348 Chevy as they couldn't afford a 409. Surf, hot-rods and girls are the preoccupations of most of the songs, mainly original compositions, though there is a stab at Summertime Blues, and the Gamblers' Moon Dawg, considered to be the first surf record. It includes some of the demo recordings that got the band signed in the first place, and their first single, Surfin', from 1961, which had first been released on the tiny X Records label and then on Candix. The version here is the Candix version speeded up, despite the "production notes" in the liner. Most of the lead vocals are by Mike Love, though Brian sings Cuckoo Clock and Dennis Wilson, the Ringo Starr of the group, debuts as lead singer on Little Miss America. Ten Little Indians was also released as a single from the album, against Brian Wilson's wishes (his choice was Chug-A-Lug).

At this stage the Beach Boys were strong vocally and harmonically but their instrumental skills were rudimentary. Although some of the tracks have previously appeared in 3-track stereo (vocals left and right, instruments at centre), they are all in mono here, although Land Ahoy!, an outtake included as a bonus track, is stereo.

Surfin' USA (1963) was similarly built around the hit title track which really put the Beach Boys on the map, a surf lyric re-write of Chuck Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen that defined their vocal sound. Again the B-side was a hot-rod song, Shut Down, on which Brian collaborated for the first time with DJ and drag racing enthusiast Roger Christian. Apart from being in stereo, this album is mostly more of the same, though Brian takes three lead vocals, including Lonely Sea, a ballad that prefigures the wistful melancholia of his later productions, and the instrumental Surf Jam marks Carl Wilson's first released composition

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-02-15

I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.

1 out of 5 stars Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14

The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2002-02-21

Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:

The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.

The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.

Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.

The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.

This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.

5 out of 5 stars Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04

The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.

5 out of 5 stars Full Metal Jacket.......2000-05-16

Full metal jacket is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. Although the language is too strong for many people (not for me), it definately puts the point across about the harsh life of Marines during training on the Island. The sniper scene is very well done as well. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is portrayed by an excellent actor who is able to scream obscenities at his troops without even cracking a smile, I would like to see the bloopers reel from Full Metal Jacket.

Although there's no shortage of Trashmen records out there (a 4 CD box set, a live album, outtakes), and none of it's waste product, this expanded version of the Minnesota surf gonzos' 1964 debut (and only contemporary) album is the best way to find out if their trash is worth your cash. The song they're famous for, "Surfin' Bird," is a frat/surf novelty classic that makes "Louie Louie" sound like "Go Away Little Girl." Two West Coast R&B novelties by the Rivingtons, "Papa Oo Mow Mow Mow" and "The Bird's the Word," are knitted together by a pulsing Midwest surf beat, with a harsh monotone vocal giving way at strategic moments to some of the most graphic sounds of regurgitation ever recorded.

If this sounds appealing (and there's no earthly reason it shouldn't), there are more delights within, although only "Bird Bath" attempts (unsuccessfully) to match the hit. You get some nicely executed surf instrumentals, slightly surf-inflected covers of "It's So Easy" and "Money," and some especially commissioned (from a friend of the band) surf and hotrod songs crammed full of period jargon. Bonus tracks include a demo of "Surfin' Bird"'s too-close-for-comfort followup, "Bird Dance Beat," and a sweetly goofy Christmas single that has Santa and his reindeer doing the Watusi with Peggy Sue, Short Fat Fannie, and other regular partygoers of the era. --Ken Barnes

5 out of 5 stars Don't You Know About The Bird??.......2007-05-20

The Trashmen will never be able to let down the song Surfin' Bird(and most folks know the song but don't know the group that sings it), and will be forever associated with that song, but the rest of their work shouldn't be ignored. Thanks to the good folks at Sundazed and curious old school surf rock fans like myself, they won't be totally forgotten. Surfin' Bird is a great piece of early 60s rock. The Trashmen are lumped into the surf rock category, which they do belong in, but alot of these songs are vocal tunes. Only a very few instrumental surf songs to be found here, but don't let that discourage you. The vocal tunes take a little warming up to, but you'll find your happyass singing along with them in no time. Great stuff from a great time in rock and roll history when lyrics were just about good clean wholesome fun. And if you dig this stuff, these guys got a big ol' boxset available. Dig!

5 out of 5 stars Great forgotten bands.......2000-01-20

I've listened to this music before it was recorded.I've seen the musicians look of pride on their faces each time they played.Alot of thought and feeling went in to each and every song written and played. The music was wholesome then, when bands were'nt a dime a dozen and you climbed to the top and worked hard for that space Aside from afew songs, the music is their own which gives it a deep personal touch. The future of music needs to get back to basics since music has a powerful effect on our lives and our childrens lives.,no bad subject matter, language,or any suggestion of violence. As i listen to this album today as I did in the 60's,I still feel that good all over feeling thatcan't keep me off the dance floor, so very lucky to have been part of it all.

If surf music's all-time heavyweight champions the Trashmen can hail from Minneapolis (where the lake swell wouldn't wipe out a canary), why shouldn't a landlocked cowabunga powerhouse emerge from Boulder, Colorado? That would be the Astronauts, whose lead guitarist, Rich Fifield (with the aid of legendary L.A. producer David Hassinger) wrung from his axe the wettest reverb known to humanity. Workmanlike vocals are split between Fifield and bassist Stormy Patterson, but stellar versions of "Misirlou" and "Pipeline" on Surfin' that are what set the group apart from the pack. The second record included on this CD, A-OK, attempts a little genre splicing, surfing up versions of Trini Lopez's hit "If I Had a Hammer" and Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy." Surprisingly, the concept holds water. --Jud Cost

5 out of 5 stars As Good As............2007-05-12

It was back in 1966!.......While I don't care much for the vocal aspect of this 2 record CD the Instrumentals are superb! and pure Astronauts. Deep Reverb and great guitars. If you Love Real surf music....This is it. It's hard to believe that these guys were out of Boulder Co. 40+ years havn't dulled this album in the least.

5 out of 5 stars Surfing with the Astronaunts/Everything is AOK.......2007-01-06

How great to hear the music of my youth. The sounds are great & what wonderful memories. The fact that it won't wear out like the albums did is even better.

4 out of 5 stars We have liftoff!.......2006-11-07

Well, the countdown to buying this CD took a few years as I bought all the pre Pet Sounds Beach Boys CDs, Jan & Dean stuff, Pet Sounds, Dick Dale, Space Cossacks, some other surf stuff, and finally wore all that stuff out and in a continuing search for new surf rock ordered a CD by The Austronauts.

Well, it isn't as polished as the Beach Boys, and The Austronauts seem more like a cover band than anything else, but I must say that the sheer authenticity of this band makes it great fun to listen to. I thoroughly enjoyed this CD and look forward to another orbit with The Austronauts.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Surf Group---Ever........2005-03-02

In the 60's every chance I had I would go to the University of Denver Student Union or Eliche's to dance to these guys. Unlike groups like the Beach Boys, The Astronauts were as good in person (actually better given the true sound)as on the LP's. Buy it if you like the surf sound, it won't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Rock At Its Best!.......2001-06-25

As a lifelong fan of these guys I had to replace my worn out vinyl of these two LP's, which I purchased in 1963 and '64! Polished really doesn't describe their performances! Electric is more like it! Inspiration to a hundred "garage bands" these guys knew how to turn on a crowd. Incidentally, they were the No. 3 band in Japan for many years, right after the Beatles and the Ventures! This CD has some of the best Surf Genre music ever recorded - timeless! Buy it - you'll love it!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ranglin is groovy........2006-05-20

By far one of the fastest and most accurate guitar players whose presence has graced about a thousand classic calypso, ska and reggae l.ps from way back in the 50s.. I heard him first on a Monty Alexander record called "Jamento" (1977) It's still available on CD and is the ultimate showcase for Ernest's talent. His speed and dexterity will stun you.
Here he sticks to traditional rock steady grooves and the result is wonderful.
Ernest Ranglin is almost a Jamaican version of Joe Pass.

4 out of 5 stars Best experienced in small doses.......2005-07-10

Unless you're a rabid fan of jazz-tinged reggae (which I'm not), you'll probably share my interesting experience of having quite enjoyed this music, but finding yourself worn out about half way through. And it has nothing to do with shoddy musicianship or poorly chosen selections. Both are beyond criticism. It's just that I found myself getting antsy listening to musical development across such a narrow range.

Let's face it. There just isn't that much variety in reggae. Yes, there is variation in tempi: some pieces are slow and some get to mid tempo or slightly beyond. But there are no out-and-out reggae burners, at least not that I'm aware of. Nor is there a great deal of variety in instrumentation, with keys, guitar, bass, drums, and, often, winds constituting the basic sound image. There can be some variety in types of percussion employed, but you're not going to find anything from the clarinet family, or any accordions, or mallet instruments (vibes, marimba, etc.), or strings. Combine that with a strict adherence to the trademark chuck-a-chuck syncopated beat and you have music that tends to begin to sound pretty much the same after about a half a dozen cuts. That's why you probably don't have a lot of jazz/reggae discs out there.

If you're totally hooked on reggae and would like to see its musical horizons slightly expanded by its being combined with a slightly jazzy vibe, this might be the record for you, although I think both Dean Fraser's The Big Up or Ranglin's disc with Monty Alexander (although it's really pre-reggae) are better. If you're pretty taken by a wide variety of world-jazz artists (e.g., Egberto Gismonti, Omar Sosa, Jan Garbarek, Cyro Baptista), you'll probably find this quite listenable but not essential.
