Vocalist Philip Bailey's high-flying falsetto made Earth, Wind & Fire an immortal supergroup. On this CD, he's backed by a streamlined combo featuring saxophonist Bob Belden, keyboardists Scott Kinsey and Myron McKinley, and remixer DJ Smash. Nine of the 11 tracks are updated classic jazz, pop, and R&B/fusion-tinged tunes, from Nat "King" Cole's "Nature Boy" to Freddie Hubbard's "On the Red Clay." Thelonious Monk's "Ruby My Dear" is revived as a quiet-storm ballad, "Dear Ruby." "My Indiscretions," Bailey's take on the funky, futuristic Weather Report jam, "Indiscretions," features catchy lyrics by the singer's son, Sir Bailey. Chick Corea's "Sometime Ago" is turned into a club-friendly dance number, while Herbie Hancock's "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" is retouched with Afro-Latin tinges. The church-inspired EW&F hit, "Keep Your Head to the Sky," is rendered with hip-hop-styled rim shots. Philip Bailey's vocalisms show that Soul on Jazz does mix. --Eugene Holley Jr.

"When Your Life Was Low," one of this album's four writing collaborations between former Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample and pop's hack-for-hire Will Jennings, is typical of this CD's low aim and artistic laziness. The vague expression of friendship in "Life," voiced listlessly by the technically adept but boring Lalah Hathaway, is perfect for the office-ready smooth-jazz radio format and little else. Hathaway's appearances on 7 of The Song Lives On's 11 cuts are a blessing only in that they break up the monotony of Sample's in-one-ear-and-out-the-other noodlings; her extremely unnecessary version of "Fever" and a dull-edged remake of the Crusaders/Randy Crawford classic "Street Life" are résumé fodder and little else. --Rickey Wright

I have bought this CD 5 times since 1999 because my friends fall in love with it every time I introduce it to someone. This is a beautiful CD and one that has remained in my rotation for the last 7 years. If the Amazon reviewer didn't like this, I really want to hear what he considers to be good music.

Simply put, LaVern Baker, one of the greatest vocalists in Atlantic Records' history, could sing anything, as she proved again and again during a seven-year run of chart hits that began with 1955's "Tweedle Dee" and culminated in 1963's "See See Rider." Her material, supplied by many of the era's greatest songwriters (Leiber-Stoller, Pomus-Shuman, and many others), encouraged her to draw on her gospel and big band backgrounds in exploring the emotional subtext of serious ruminations on life such as "Saved" and the powerful "Soul on Fire." The latter was her first Atlantic single, and on it she used virtually every vocal technique at her command to bring out the slow-burning sensuality of the Ahmet Ertegun-penned gem of erotic longing. Thus was notice served, and, in the glorious years that followed, Baker cut a swath wide enough that her name and label-mate Ruth Brown's were spoken in the same reverent terms, sotto voce. The 20 tracks here remain as vital today as they were indispensable to the music's evolution in her own time. --David McGee

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful LaVern.......2007-05-27

Not only was she great in every way these other reviews say, she was a very beautiful lady on the outside and inside. The only place I had to hear her when I was a teenager was at a mainly "blacks" cafe on the "down" end of the town I grew up in. There were no "black" radio stations then in my hometown. My closest friend and I could sometimes get a far off radio station that played this kind of music, but we'd slip off and go to this cafe (Miles' Cafe) after high school let out. I can't remember what we used as an excuse as to why we were late getting home from school. (Parents cared in those days, but would not have approved of our going in to "that" cafe.) I'm so glad I ran across this album on Amazon. Well, Amazon actually recommended it to me. Thanks Amazon. I remember most of these songs. Oh, I graduated from high school in 1957.

5 out of 5 stars Lavern Baker - Absolutely Awesome!!!.......2006-03-10

I thought I would never get to hear "My Happiness" or "Shake A Hand" again, but was thrilled when I found them. This CD is one of my most prized possessions! It's totally awesome!

4 out of 5 stars She sings of love like she's been there.......2006-03-08

With a soul inspired by love how can She go wrong? I should have said "She'll never be out of love", becuase it's obvious to me She's in love with the Lord of Lords. And Atlantic found her popularity was in her style. Her lyrics told of the king of kings without coming accross as a hymn. A lifestyle that's in "shake a hand" Is in my opinion inspired from Jesus' teachings, and comes accross as love thy neighbor. So with great enthusiasm she sings of her feelings for God and many are fooled in thinking she sings this way of men. A spirit so inspired is rare in music, and even more so if only men have made her feel this way.

5 out of 5 stars soul on fire !!.......2004-08-21

5 out of 5 stars My Soul Unearthed.......2004-01-25

My youngest memories of music as a kid were of LaVern Baker. My Dad played her albums at every party he threw (and he threw quite a few). I liked it then, but haven't listened to her music in well over 20 years now. I purchased this album to remember my Dad's music.

The best surprise was mine to enjoy--not only did I reconnect all of my memories, I gained a true appreciation of what a wonderful treasure LaVern Baker was. My goodness. Between LaVern Baker and Fats Domino, do you need anything else to remember those years?

There is not a single bad song on this album. Every song she sings is emminently enjoyable. But it--you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Of all the life-affirming music made in response to Hurricane Katrina, this is perhaps the most radical achievement--a recontextualizing of Marvin Gaye's early-'70s classic in the wake of the devastation of New Orleans. Joining the Crescent City's leading brass band are an array of guest singers who give the interplay a different dynamic from Gaye's silky sophistication. From the harder edge that Public Enemy's Chuck D gives the opening title track through the redemptive prophecy provided by Guru on the closing "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," the album takes the spirit of Gaye's social commentary and adds a contemporary twist. Among the other highlights, Bettye LaVette wrings every ounce of soul from "What's Happening Brother," Ivan Neville leads the call-and-response spirituality of "God Is Love," and the Dirty Dozen transform "Save the Children" into a symphony of syncopation and saxophones. Released to mark the first anniversary of the hurricane, with some proceeds benefitting relief efforts, the album deserves to have the staying power of Gaye's original. --Don McLeese

Album Description

On August 29, the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will release their reinterpretation of Marvin Gaye's classic LP What's Going On. Thirty-five years after its original release, the political and social themes of the album are just as relevant as ever. Along with many others along the Gulf Coast, the members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band lost their homes to Katrina. Their take on What's Going On is not only an attempt to express their feelings about this tragedy and other current events, but also a tribute to the spirit of their hometown of New Orleans.

Guest vocalists Chuck D, Ivan Neville, G. Love, Guru and Bettye LaVette contribute to album, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each copy of What's Going On will go to the Tipitina's Foundation, benefiting the music community of New Orleans.

4 out of 5 stars great tuba.......2007-06-08

Since my son plays the tuba a friend suggested this cd to me and I think it is wonderful. He makes the tuba sound like a guitar!! we love it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly "What's Going On"..........2006-12-01

Combining superlative musicianship, the inspiration of Marvin Gaye's original album, the immediacy of the new arrangements, contributions from legendary guest artists, and the enormity of the calamity (Hurricane Katrina) that inspired this undertaking, this is a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L recording!

And not just because of the good intentions.

Anyone who is in tune with Marvin's vibe ie anyone who's got S-O-U-L, will appreciate and enjoy the groove on this jam.

If I'm mixing metaphors, I apologize. Just a caucasian dude with a lifelong love of soul.

5 out of 5 stars A vital and heartfelt tribute to the people and city of New Orleans.......2006-08-30

Anyone who loves New Orleans music was devastated by the disaster wrought by Katrina last year. Despite the painfully slow recovery the city is making, there are glimmers of hope and reasons to rejoice. This album is one of them.

The Dirty Dozen Brass take on Marvin Gaye's classic LP and do it up N'awlins style. At the same time, they make the point that the problems--war, poverty, ecological disaster, drug abuse, racism--that Gaye sang about 30 years ago are still prevalent. However, this album is anything but a downer. Like the New Orleans tradition of the funeral march, in which the band plays a dirge on the way out to the cemetary and party music on the way back, the Dozen give us a reason to dance all over our troubles, as Pete Townshend once put it. Get this album today (proceeds benefit NOLA musicians) and start dancing.

In the liner notes to Jamiroquai's debut album, lead singer and mastermind Jason Kay delivers a sincere, if oversimplified, screed about distributing the wealth and saving the rainforests. The lyrics follow suit: except for a single love tune ("Blow Your Mind"), Kay bemoans war, greed, racism, and conformity, or extols the power of music as a drug ("Hooked Up") or as a catalyst for social revolution. This is not Jamiroquai's most eloquent album, nor their strongest musically, what with most songs structured as long-form, open-ENDed jams weighing in at six minutes or more. Though interesting as a chronicle of Kay's musical vision taking shape, overall it's a document that will appeal most to Deadheads and jam-band fans. --Suzanne McElfresh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Their first and best in my opinion........2006-02-27

I own all of Jamiroquai's cd's and i think most of them are great. This is absolutely my favorite to listen to straight through. I think the horns are amazing especially on "Hooked Up", and the percussion always ends up pushing the pace in a subtle way. This album just makes me move and I think JK and co. have so much raw energy. Stuart on Bass is sick sick sick straight through. "Revolution 1993" has become my favorite song by Jamiroquai -- love the lyrics, the message, the excitement, the tension/release, its just put together so well. "Music of the Mind" is a great instrumental track and shows off the jazz-rock-funk roots of what became the later disco-enhanced Jamiroquai. Sweet solos too, the keys are great. Also love "Too Young To Die" and "Emergency On Planet Earth". Impressive debut from a band, and it stands as one of my favorite discs.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good CD........2006-01-10

This CD is not bad. It's not Jamiroquai's best, but it is highly listenable. I enjoyed a lot of the songs on there, with that unique, funkadelic sound, especially "Emergency on Planet Earth", "Blow Your Mind" & "Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop". If you are a die hard fan, get this one, otherwise, skip it.

4 out of 5 stars jamiroquai are soo cool!!!!!.......2005-11-08

this album is my first from jamiroquai, and i think this album is great!!! "when you gonna learn" and " too young to die" are great songs and "music of the mind" too. if you love and like funk music buy this cd!!

4 out of 5 stars Forget the Stevie Wonder comparisons...........2005-07-05

Jamiroquai, as it stood in 1991, was one of the freshest sounds to come out of the Acid Jazz movement. This record, though uneven at times was overshadowed only by it's ambition. 10 tracks, none under 4:50, and most well over 5 minutes all the while creating a conscious VIBE. That right that was something that the kids were not getting on the radio back in 1991, especially here in America where Hip Hop had finally pierced the brains of record executives as a financial reality. However, for those in search of something just as viable with musicianship to boot, how much did it feel like Christmas Day after just one listen? Yes, in the years since they have had better records, "Space Cowboy" & "Travelling Without Moving", also worse ones "A Funk Odessey", but for what it was worth they have been well worth following just for the music alone. No Jay Kay is no Stevie but who the hell is? If you should choose to listen to this record just listen as a fan of music and in the context of it being 1991 and what was going on musically at that time. Now if you pick up their other CD's you will find that as time passes and the original band starts to splinter that the music also suffers. In particular, when Stuart Zender's bass leaves prior to Synkronized, the band goes to a more Disco influenced direction. This, in my mind, is why Jamiroqual has never had the success stateside that Sony had gambled on back in '90-'91.

3 out of 5 stars Unexceptional.......2005-06-13

I like "Too Young to Die," but the rest of this disc is mostly just filler to me. The band channels the Stevie Wonder of the 70s and does a good job of emulating that funky vibe, but they don't really do anything original with it. In addition, most of the songs go on way too long, turning into jam sessions that become background music, unable to command my attention.

5 out of 5 stars Back on the Block With A Vengeance.......2007-04-25

I remember seeing all the videos and hearing all the songs on cassette of Quincy Jones' Back on the Block album. I bought the cassette when it came out and eventually purchased the CD, which I still proudly own. Quincy Jones' return marked the return of Barry White (my idol, my mentor, God rest his soul; for I, too, wailed at his passing) in the well-loved "Secret Garden" hit along with Al B. Sure, James Ingram, and El DeBarge. It also marked the debut of Tevin Campbell in "Tomorrow". With Quincy Jones' spin on "Birdland", "The Brazilian Wedding Song", "I'll Be Good To You" and others, the word "classic" is an understatement to appropriately describe this CD; it's definitely a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars His project of a lifetime?.......2006-09-26

The 80s were a very busy decade for Quincy Jones. Between 1979 and 1989 he not only produced three hit albums for Michael Jackson, he also produced hit albums for others, including George Benson, Donna Summer, James Ingram, Patti Austin, The Brothers Johnson, Rufus & Chaka Khan and Ernie Watts. In his 1990 documentary "Listen Up", which documents a lot of the making of this particular album, Jones tells of how overwork and exhaustion ultimately led to a nervous breakdown and two separate aneurysms.

By the time he was ready to make this album, which he describes as his project of a lifetime, music was undergoing a revolution. Disco was long dead and buried, hip-hop was emerging as the predominant force and the smooth jazz-influenced beats Jones was reputed for were falling out of favour.

To give him his due he approached the situation gamely. The title tune, "Back On The Block" was a brave kiss with rap if not a particularly wise one. The song, which features big guns of the time such as Melle Mel, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T and Kool Moe Dee is always fun to listen to but I never heard it played on the radio or at any clubs or parties. "Jazz Corner of The World", his attempt to marry rap with jazz was more interesting and featured jazz luminaries like James Moody, Miles Davis, George Benson, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Josef Zawinul alongside Kool Moe Dee and Big Daddy Kane. It's heady, exciting stuff to listen to even now, 17 years later. If nothing else, Q certainly knew where music was heading.

The production on this CD is stunning beyond belief. "Wee B. Dooinit", featuring Siedah Garrett, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Ella Fitzgerald, Take 6 and Sarah Vaughn is a completely acapella performance. McFerrin produced the percussion and bass sound effects and I still wonder exactly where Q placed the microphones.

There are some other great songs. "I'll Be Good To You" featured lead vocals by Ray Charles and Chaka Khan. The album version was good enough but I remember getting the 12" single which had the same backbeat as Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'". (Now THAT was a huge club hit). "The Places You Find Love" featured lead vocals from Chaka Khan and Siedah Garrett, with background vocals from Howard Hewitt, Jennifer Holiday, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Luther Vandross and the Andrae Crouch Singers among others.

Apart from her brief stint with the Brand New Heavies, Siedah Garrett's work with Quincy Jones (here and on Michael Jackson's "Bad") have produced the only performances of hers I've managed to find bearable. She seems to have taken the place formerly occupied by Patti Austin in Q's workplan and to give her the credit she's due, she does the job well. She does the vocal arrangement on the majority of the songs and where she took lead vocal duties, like on "I Don't Go For That" and "One Man Woman", she gives a barnstorming performance.

But for me, the album was made by "Setembro (Brazilian Wedding Song)" featuring Take 6 & Sarah Vaughn, with Gerald Albright on alto sax, George Benson on guitar, George Duke on fender Rhodes and Herbie Hancock on keyboards. The song attained iconic status when John Singleton used it in his classic movie "Boyz N The Hood". (It was the song playing during the love scene between Nia Long and Cuba Gooding, Jr). It's one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Q's take on Joe Zawinul's "Birdland" featuring Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and James Moody, is also a personal favourite.

This album is also noted for introducing the world to (the then angelic-voiced) Tevin Campbell. He did the tearjerking "Tomorrow (Better You, Better Me)" with background vocal help from the `children's choir'. And last but by no means least, the album also produced the perennial slow dance song, "The Secret Garden", featuring El DeBarge, James Ingram, Al B. Sure! and Barry White. That one still moves people to this day.

This review is long but I feel to pass this project off with a few lines or a paragraph or two would not be doing its magnitude justice. It's not my all-time favourite Quincy Jones record but I can totally see why he considers it so significant. It is so significant. Getting all these legends of the past and of the future was a huge achievement all by itself. Who else could possibly have gotten all these people into the studio at the same time?

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant album.......2006-06-27

How is it that Quincy Jones manages to make such good albums even though he does not play or sing a single note? Or for that matter, write any of the material?

This album is good from start to finish and spawned a number of hits that charted. You can sit down and listen to it from start to finish any day of the week and have a good experience.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best that Q put out!.......2004-12-28

BACK ON THE BLOCK (1989) is one the best albums that Quincy Jones put out in the late '80s. It shows a new direction in the black culture and black music we're talking 'bout right now.

I think everybody should own this CD even tho it's out-of-print cuz you can go online and get it like spun.com, djangos.com, wherehouse.com, cduniverse.com or gemm.com (where I go where they have all the LPs, cassettes, books, CDs, all of that used and never owned before).

Yeah Quincy put out an album that is so amazing and it still lives from this day forward. This CD has everyone craving about- Jazz, R&B, Funk, Jazz-Rock, Fusion, Rap, Hip-Hop, Soul, Pop, etc.- It's full of a variety of different artists from Barry White (whom I recently loved and lost from last year), Ray Charles (we all know who passed this year but still lives on), Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, James Ingram, Tevin Campbell, Ice-T, Big Daddy Kane, Chaka Kahn, Patti Austin of course, The Seawind Horns feat. Jerry Hey and all of 'em, y'know all of the above you can name.

I love this man to death even tho he puts out real stuff like the artists we listen too right is Alicia Keys, Musiq, Mary J. Blige, Grover Washington, Jr., Miles Davis, George Benson, Usher, Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men (two of my favorite R&B gurus of all-time), OutKast, Nelly, Steely Dan, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Fred Hammond, Yolonda Adams, Mase, LL Cool J, Common, The Roots, Guru & Gang Starr, etc.

This is a must-have. Also check out Q's Jook Joint too 'cuz it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Well-crafted and colorful masterpiece! .......2004-09-25

Without a doubt one of the most influencial musicians for the past 50 years as of this writing, Quincy Jones is one of the best musicians that on this planet and remains a great influence on music to this day.

His 1989 magnum opus entitled "Back on The Block" is unrivalled by almost everything else. The sheer number of singers and other stars who came aboard for this project is impressive! Starring a huge cast of old-time singers some of whom have sadly since passed away, rappers, and then yet-to-be pop stars this incredible masterpiece is without a doubt a contender for being one of the smartest, most creative, and energetic albums anyone has ever put out. While I don't want to sound too biased with this review but "Back On The Block" is my favorite African-American music album of all time. .

The party begins with a marvelous rap interlude entitled "Prologue (20's rap scene/ Quincy's Rap) which is a fun and energetic warm-up track featuring a wonderful rap dialogue that is really a lot of fun and highly joyous to listen. The title begins with a industrial metallic drum intro similar to that of the title track of Janet Jackson's dynamite "Rhythm Nation" and becomes a marvelous and energetic blend of rap, hip-hop with a New Jack Swing Spice. "I Don't Go For That" is similar to the previous and with a stadium-like New Jack Swing anthem with a fun Manhattan nighttime city feel. "I Don't Go For That" is a wonderful New Jack Swing classic with a highly danceable beat, wonderful melody.

"The Verb To Be" is a really humorous interlude with oddly amplified voice effects and really funny lines. The laughing voices merge into the track "We Be Doing' It". For all of the humor of "Verb" it perfect blends into the hip-hop rhythm and the song has a wonderful mix of R&B, blues, and dance all meshed together. If you're looking for great hip-hop music and for a testament for 1988-1991 being the Golden Era of this once-great genre, look no further. "The Place You Find Love" is one of my absolute favorite tracks on this album. It starts with a dramatic echoing Gospel voice and becomes a powerful Gospel anthem for the ages. The vocals by whoever is singing are absolutely incredible and do wonders for this track.

The next two-some track combo "Jazz Corner of the World" and "Birdland" to me are the apex of this album. "Jazz Corner" has a really perky Brazilian percussion and has a really cool hip rap verse. The groove of "Jazz Corner" perfectly merges into my absolute favorite song on this album "Birdland". This is without a doubt the best song Quincy has ever recorded and quite likely a candidate for the best cover-song I've ever listened to. With amazing bass lines and energetic trumpet horns similar from what one would hear from Phil Collins, the beat is just amazing and the song has a really awesome groove unrivalled by few other songs from 1989. "Septembro" is a sultry soulful instrumental jazz song with really unique chord shift and wonderful wordless vocals.

"One Man Woman" is a great and energetic dance song with a strong New Jack Swing style. "Tomorrow" is sheer and utter beauty featuring a barely teenaged then future-superstar Tevin Campbell singing on vocals and childrens choir. The song has a really positive, cheerful, and uplifting vibe to it.

The final track Secret Garden is one of the sexiest soul ballads of all time with a very Quiet Storm mood and featuring guest vocals from the late R&B crooner Barry White (I cried at the news of his passing) the create a beautiful nighttime closer to this illustrious masterpiece of an album.

This album is just about on the border of being utmost perfection. For all of the hard-work put into it's making this is without a doubt one of the greatest achievements in popular, rock, hip-hop, and rap music history. As of writing this review, I am absolutely horrified to see the term "Out of Stock" actually on this product! For such a stunning achievement that took so much work and was such a huge hit, I for one cannot believe that Warner Brothers don't even carry this album in their catalog anymore! What a terrible disgrace to music history, by denying many fans one of the most positive, smartest, most well-crafted albums that has ever been released.

Wherever you go, I highly urge you to hunt for a copy of this album and buy it without hesitation. If not, then you have no idea of the party that you might find yourself missing out on. Quite simply there's no other album like this nor will there ever be.

4 out of 5 stars Musica muy bueno!.......2007-05-24

I was doing a Powerpoint presentation on Panama with my class. They loved the music, it introduced them to music they had never heard before. I also look forward to playing this CD at my annual BBQ, my parents will be proud! :)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT OVERLOOKED MUSIC.......2006-08-03

This is just great music. The producer has made a tastefully selection in each track of the compilation. The result, is nothing less than a magnificent overview of the diversity of Panamanian music. A diversity that can only be trace to the multiethnic background of the people of the isthmus. You can enjoy pure original soul music (tracks 12, 9, 2 ) with such a good quality that can easily be compare with that produced by Afro-American legends...Panamanian Calypso is gratefully vindicated by Lord Cobra, probably the most important calypsonian of the Caribbean during the sixties and seventies. His version of "Rocombey" is just amazing. In the other hand, you can find original and exclusive Salsa Music.... In my opinion this is the Panamanian version of Buena Vista Social Club..... Don't miss it....

5 out of 5 stars This is an incredible album.......2006-08-01

I was born in 1976, so i guess i missed all of this, i am from Panama and i can honestly say that this album blew my mind, being a music enthusiast i am always searching for seventies combos nacionales music and had heard some funk and calypsos from the country, but this pieces i didn't know existed until i bought this cd.
If you want to know just how good Panamenian music can be, this is where you should start.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation. . . ........2007-04-10

Like a lot of aging divas, Nancy Wilson is not the same singer today that she was in the 1960's (see also Aretha Franklin and Barbara Striesand), but this spotlight compilation of Nancy Wilson in her prime is an excellent showcase of a singular jazz interpreter: her voice was at once glamorous and muscular: she could be as slinky as Diana Ross; as playful and saucy as Dinah Washington (a major influence on the young Wilson's vocal style) or Eartha Kitt; or nearly as brilliant and interpretive a belter as Striesand. As with Aretha and the young Striesand, Wilson's emotional connection to the songs keeps the listener hanging onto every word. There are over-the-top big band numbers, like the superlative "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to" and "What a little Moonlight will do." Wilson handles the mesmerizing ballads like "Midnight Sun" and "Here's that Rainy Day" with such care and finesse that these versions rank among the best EVER recorded. In short, those who are just discovering Ms. Wilson are in for a rare treat, those who have never heard of her are missing out on something profound.

5 out of 5 stars great singer.......2006-08-12

I would put Nancy Wilson in the top five of lady singers.
This album has great audio quality and shows her great singing talent.

5 out of 5 stars Spotlight on Nancy Wilson: A Rich Treat.......2006-06-07

I bought this CD on the behest of all the enthusiastic Amazon reviewers, and I am adding myself to their ranks. I didn't know the music of Nancy Wilson, prior to buying this, and was basically looking to add some sophistication and depth to my music collection, which, up until recently, consisted primarily of classic rock, Goth, and world dance.

To fully appreciate the romance, the emotion, and the shine of this incredible collection of songs, I recommend you listen to it 1. with your one and only love, or 2. listen to it while in the company of your most affectionate feline, or 3. listen to it while eating your favorite chocolate...ignoring all guilt, of course. I was, if you'll pardon the expression, triply blessed, to be doing all three, when this arrived late on a Friday afternoon. You want sweet? Add all those elements to this music, these lyrics, performed by this woman, and the result was almost like being high on something that seemed it would never ever drop me off. It was so sweet, that it created a moment like those that many of these songs are about. That is the wonderful thing about this CD; listened to under the ideal circumstances, it will create such moments, while NW sings about them.

Every time I think I have picked out the songs that are my absolute favorites, I listen to the CD again, and another song expands in my mind, to fit whatever happens to be going on with me, at the moment...but without a doubt, the Mercer/Hampton song, "Midnight Sun," which I had never heard before, always stops me in my tracks, and stops the clock, with its dreamy descriptions, adding both shadows and gold leaf, like mixing an old Joseph Von Sternberg film, with Maxfield Parrish's golden brush. Such lines as, , Your lips were like a red and ruby chalice, warmer than the summer night
The clouds were like an alabaster palace rising to a snowy height," and, Was there such a night, it's a thrill I still don't quite believe,
But after you were gone, there was still some stardust on my sleeve," complimented by the most subtle, minimalist and dreamy music, cannot, in my mind, be topped, as far as romantic songs are concerned.

The quality of the transference to CD is seamless, unlike a lot of CDs of older songs, like "I Want To Be Evil," by Eartha Kitt, or "The Very Best of Fairuz," by Fairuz, both of which I rate a 5, due to the flawless performances of the artists, and the strength of the songs they contain....but what a treat it is to listen to such rich, subtle, delicious music, and not be reminded, at any point, that it is not being sung to me directly. Most of the songs on this collection I have heard bits of, over the years, but never actually sat and listened to them, and now I am not at all sure of who I heard them sung by...but I can say with certainty that now that I have heard Nancy Wilson singing them, they belong to her. Her voice is rich, yet cool, but never cold, emotional, yet restrained. I now understand what it means to perform a song, not just sing it, as every song seems to come from her alone, not a lyricist and composer, and so it just connects with the listener, this one, anyway; I even feel that way about, "The Best Is Yet To Come," when in reality, things look pretty rough ahead, for the time being. She sings it with an excitement, sultriness and confidence, that is so contagious, I just wish the song was longer.Less ebullient songs, like "Little Girl Blue," are crystallizations of the low moments I can slide into with astounding ease...and she just nails it on the head. All the songs are rich and true and wonderful, and NW makes them all the more so. If you don't have this one, you should get it...and don't forget the chocolate!

5 out of 5 stars Great Starter CD to the Genius of Nancy Wilson.......2004-10-06

Of the glut of Nancy Wilson Capitol CD's out there, this is a very nice one to start with. Part of the "Spotlight Series" that Capitol Records issues of their top-selling artists, this is indeed one of the best "Spotlight" CDs. First of all, sound quality is terrific. This may come as a shock, but I've discovered that Capitol doesn't always have the strictest sound quality control for their reissued discs, but this one is fantastic. The songs are culled from Nancy's Sixties stuff -- definitely her very best. This also shows that Ms. Wilson was comfortable with whatever music accompaniment thrown at her -- orchestras, strings, jazz trios, piano solo -- you name it and she excels in every musical setting. Definitely a very "Show-Off" CD to demonstrate the mastery and genius of Nancy Wilson when she was at her peak. Give her a great song and she'll do wonders with it. Get this one ! You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars You'll fall in love.......2004-05-09

I had only heard one Nancy Wilson song on the radio "Guess who I saw today?" before I bought this CD. Bought it out of curiosity and fell in love. The arrangements are wonderful, the song choice timeless and Nancy's voice is to die for. Buying the CD again today to send to my mom who is a big Dinah Washington fan.

5 out of 5 stars One of my very favorite albums.......2006-07-20

I grew up listening to great music from artists like Ella Fitzgerald and writers like George and Ira Gershwin. And today I enjoy everyone from Nelly to Yo Yo Ma, and Tom Jobim to Earth Wind and Fire. Q assembled an amazing variety artists on this CD and covered every genre from rap to soft Brazilian jazz. I love every cut on here. My favorite is "The Places You Find Love." I have put it on a couple of compilation CDs and I choke up frequently when I hear it. Jones' rendition of "Birdland," bringing together so many wonderful jazz greats is also an emotional treat. I rarely agree with Grammy choices, but I was SO happy to see this album win in 1991. They just don't get any better than this. Thank you, Quincy Jones and to everyone associated with this amazing CD!

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Q Album!!.......2006-02-09

This is by far Quincy Jones's best effort!
And that's saying alot when you consider his other
masterpieces of jazz / pop fusion:
1978's "Sounds & Stuff Like That!" one of my all-time faves!
and a close second to that is 1980's "The Dude",
which, like this one, is just chucked with classic
performances! The whole concept of old school
merging with new school and vice versa has
always really been kind of what Q is about,
but this is his most realized effort.
The late great Sarah Vaughn (Sassy) did her last great performance on this album,
the beautiful and serene brazilian flavored
"Setembre" which just takes my breath away!

Little Tevin Campbell debuts on this one with the
cheerful and brilliant "Tommorow (Better You, Better Me)"
which showed his promise as a gifted young singer.
Sadly, after the little scandal of a few years ago,
poor Tevin has had a hard time getting his momentum back.
Some people's ignorance and intolerance is amazing!
The guy is talented!..Period!...That's all that should factor
in when you purchase his or any other artist's material!

As I've said there are many great performaces on this CD,
but by far..."Secret Garden" is and was an immediate
quiet storm classic and the reason for a slight swell
in birth rates in 1989 and 1990!
Talk about a hall of fame of vocalists
and musicians!--whew!!
You can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Black Music Album I Have Ever Heard!.......2005-08-19

Back On The Block is an excellent recording by the musical renaissance man of Quincy Jones. The caliber of top rate musicians of various age and gender that appear on here is spectacular, covering all the musical genres that are a part of African music; be-bop, doo-wop, accapella, jazz fusion, rap/hip-hop, rhythm and blues, classical and pop-soul, with a mixture of both vocal and instrumental songs. This album is on my iPod frequent playlist. This album won multiple Grammy awards in 1990, including Album Of The Year.

One minor disappointment that I have with the recording is that it does not contain lyrics to the songs. I have an older copy of Back On The Block, which did not contain the lyrics, and when recordings are remastered, there is lyrics included, along with liner notes, extra photos, and bonus material. However the remastered version that I purchased hoping to have the lyrics does not contain them either.

My advice for anyone wanting to find the lyrics, you can check out Quincy Jones music publishing website at www.quincyjonesmusic.com. You can find the lyrics for "Back On The Block", "We B. Dooinit", "Tomorrow (Better You, Better Me)" and the "The Secret Garden" there. The other ones you can find by doing a Google search by song title, but the ones that are difficult to find are for "Prologue (Q's Rap)", "Don't Go For That", "The Verb To Be", and "One Man Woman".

Other than that, I give the album a 5 star review and listening to the recording brings joy for me. I highly recommend this recording to others.

5 out of 5 stars unavoidable.......2005-08-09

this album is absolutely to listened to, if you are a fan of great voices and rhythms. at least 50 artists joined together on these tracks. just listen to we be doin it, all voices, no instruments, al jarreau duets (too shortly) with ella, bobby mc ferrin gives tempo while take 6 do the chorus, ella and al scat at the end. and that is just an exemple. chaka kahn duets with ray charles, jennifer holliday is somewhere in the background, sheila E drums, barry white is around. to complete this album, watch "listen up", the moving movie about quincy, where you see lots of the recording sessions. here you go

3 out of 5 stars Where is the bass Maceo?.......2005-06-15

After reading the many 'rave' reviews about this album (and having the odd album of Maceo's already) I promptly followed suit and ordered my own. I must say that after listening to it I was fairly unimpressed.

Yes there is definitely some great funk on here and virtuoso playing. But, and here's a few butts for ya!

1) Where is the bass??? - I have a high end audio system and I would have to say that this is about the most anemic disc I have ever heard! The one very thing that funk needs is a solid backbeat and bottom end and this disc just doesn't have any. With any luck you can crank on the bass control on your system but why do we have to do this? The recording/mastering engineers should have known better.

2) Candy Dulfer - might be pretty but she doesn't add anything funky to this disc. Reminiscent of Kenny G and would have been better off this album.

3) Maceo's singing (assuming its him) - better spent wrapping his lips around a reed. Sweet Georgia is a tired old tune, not much for funk either and basically is a big lead sinker.

4) 'So Good' sped up wasn't very inspiring either and the original James Brown version (which he obviously would have played on also) just wipes it by comparison. Nothing inspiring with this selection.

I could go on, but these were the main beefs...

I'm sure the guy is great live, but this record, judged on its merits (rather than some memory of a concert of years ago that others seem to be recalling) is only average.

Cheers, Kendrick

5 out of 5 stars Ooooh, what's that you're doin'? Sure looks good to me!.......2005-04-06

This is the best live performance ever recorded, EVER. I'd give my right leg to have been there.

Any drummers here? There's enough tight licks to send you to the woodshed to practice for a decade. Almost every backbeat sends chills down my spine.

This album is truly a testament to instrumental musicians. Everybody plays their part, nobody steps on anyone else, each musician inspires the others to play their best, and the result is a sublime collective whole. Machines will never groove as hard humans, and this album is proof.

I'm on my third copy in over a decade, the CDs just can't seem to hold up to the amount of times I play them.

5 out of 5 stars If for nothing else, to rock your party.......2005-02-12

This album is great and in heavy rotation from my collection. The version of "Shake Everything You Got" will bring any room full of loungers and chatters to their feet and really get the party rolling.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest way to discover Maceo Parker.......2004-12-30

Undoubtedly the greatest way to discover Maceo Parker. This live recorded at Cologne in 1992 bring together Maceo, Fres Wesley, Pee We Elis and more guest (Kim Mazel, Candy Dufler...).

5 out of 5 stars Maceo needs a crown - he'e the king........2004-10-05

Maceo Parker was always James Brown's right-hand man, and for good reason. He is one smokin' sax player. But he's more than that. He's one of very few icons in the world of funk. Ask anyone. It just doesn't get as good as Maceo. He's raw, powerful and sooooo soulful. Like some of the other reviewers, I've had the good fortune of seeing him live a few times, and he never disappoints. Most people his age are kicking back in their Lazy-Boys and collecting their retirement checks. Maceo is out there blowin' his horn so hard the roof could fly off the building. And like few live albums out there, this album is actually able to capture a lot of that vibe. Played through some good speakers, "Life On Planet Groove" is liable to get the dead up and dancing.
