Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
Aretha's underrated Jazz album from 1969........2007-03-20
Contrary to what its title implies this was a Jazz (not Soul) album. Producer Jerry Wexler brought some great musicians to these sessions which remain some of Aretha's most memorable ever. Listening to this album today it is easy to imagine Aretha as a natural successor to such great Jazz singers as Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington.
Aretha's Jazz Album.......2006-06-21
This is my all-time favorite Aretha Franklin album - and Aretha is one of my all-time favorite singers! Here she proves beyond any doubt that in addition to being a great soul and gospel singer, she was also a great jazz singer. I only wish she had made more albums like this!
If you like soul or big band jazz singing, this CD is a MUST HAVE!
JUST ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.......2005-09-15
Although this is one of the lesser known Aretha albums, it could be her best one. It could just as easily have been called Jazz 69 too, 'cause it has a jazzy flavor to it, complete with big band accompaniment, and Aretha is in her best form. She was/is quite a talent, this CD just oozes with feeling and passion.
5 Stars and then some.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-07-15
'Ramblin' and 'If You Gonna Make a Fool Of Somebody' are the only probably the best songs ever recorded (in my opinion) from Ms. Franklin.
JUST BUY THIS CD AND ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aretha's Best.......2005-05-06
This is one of Aretha's Best Albums. There is a cohesiveness to the material as each track makes its own statement about the pains and emotions of love. From the magnificent soulful ballads of "If You Gotta Make A Fool of Somebody," "So Long," "I'll Never Be Free," to the jazzier tunes, "Gentle On My Mind" and "Elusive Butterfly, this album has it all. When I originally heard Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears," I didn't understand why it was such a hit. Aretha's version is simply amazing, as is her reading of Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly."

The Godfathers of quad thumping music.......2003-08-17
I've always loved the 69 Boyz, they had some of the hottest music and dopest beats. I can't name one person who wasn't doing the tootsie roll. If you want to hear good music, please got the first album. It is so heart pumping that you can't help but dance to it. I'll be glad when they come back and reclaim their fame. To this day people are still grooving along to the 69 Boyz in their cars with the same enthusiasm.

Earlier O'Jays make it to CD.......2002-04-24
Though they were active musically from the early 60s into the 80s, the O'Jays are most identified as the artists who gave us polished r'n'b examplified by "Love Train", "Use Ta Be My Girl" and many other hits as part of the Gamble and Huff hit machine, Philadelphia International Records throughout the 70s. These recordings have been reissued ad nauseam but much of the O'Jays' earlier works has been largely ignored up to now. Here, Bob Irwin's Sundazed Music, the small but powerhouse indy reissue label, brings to market a collection of the O'Jays late 60s output done for Bell Records. This collection gathers up their three charted singles along with b-sides, album cuts, non-charting single releases and a few previously unissued cuts providing a substantial overview of their Bell-era output. Their Bell releases include the top-10 r'n'b charting "I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow", their most identifiable tune from this era in their career. Listening to these earlier tunes, the groundwork can be seen for the phenomenal work they would later do under the auspices of Gamble and Huff. While some of these tunes have appeared on other O'Jays CDs, this is the first truly high-quality reissue of this material, and thankfully, the horrific audience noise overdubbing that was added to a Bell lp of their output at the time and has continued to pollute these sides on other CDs, does not appear here. This is a first-rate production with excellent sound quality and a liner notes booklet with a Bell-era musical history courtesy of Bill Dahl. All of the included tracks appear in stereo with the exception of the last four. For O'Jays fans, this fills a long-standing gap in the CD appearance of their earlier recordings and makes an outstanding complement to their Phila. Intl. CD coverage. Now, if only someone would complete the repertoire with their Imperial recordings...

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-04
Of George Frederick Handel(1685-1759) of England, born Georg Friedrich Handel of Germany, an English critic wrote, "He did bestride our musical world like a Colossus." The English passion for the oratorio is largely due to Handel, who was forced to find a new style of music with which to rekindle the interest of the public. For twenty years he had been presenting operas in London, but the last seasons had been increasingly unsuccessful as audiences took against attending staged works in Italian. The prior success of 'Esther' had launched 'oratorio' in London, and set Handel on a compositional path which was to prove his principal sphere of work for the rest of his life.
Handel's oratorios, more dramatic than any previously written, were like operas, save that they were given without scenery and costumes. Moreover, the variety of moods, the quality of the melodies and the composer's unique use of the colours of the orchestra makes the whole work marvellously attractive.
This disc contains an excellent variety of tunes from the various oratorios. Most are vocal in nature, but there are 2 that are strictly instrumental: Overture to 'Esther' in 3 movements and 'Martial Symphony and Destructive Was' from 'Solomon'. I particularly enjoyed the 2 duets with Susan Gritton (soprano) and James Bowman (countertenor): 'O fairest of 10,000 Fair' from 'Saul' and 'Welcome as the dawn of day' from 'Solomon'.
James Bowman does his usual correct interpretation of all the selections. His diction is not always clear due to his somewhat 'loud' and 'muffled' tone quality. BUT having said this, I must say that he is considered by most to be one of the great singers from the UK. I just simply prefer a more refined and clear 'delivery' such as Michael Chance renders. But we all have our own preferences and that's good for the world of music appreciation. Susan Gritton's voice is clear and her diction is excellent; and Robert King with the King's Consort give their usual fine accompaniment.
Just aside for those of you who enjoy the oratorio; there are 4 excellent 'live' performances on CD from the Maulbronn Monastery conducted by Jurgen Budday with superb singing, both soloistically and chorally. They are recorded by K&K Verlagsanstalt and are available on amazon.com
a must for Handel devotees.......2000-01-13
This CD contains some of the most beautiful music from Handel's oratorios and is performed here with style, warmth, brilliance, and authenticity. The sound quality of this recording is very warm and bright (good combination)!
If you like this CD, try Handel's HEROIC ARIAS, also by James Bowman.

The First New Albert King Release In Years!.......2003-10-20
This set is definately a collector's item. It was recorded in May 1969 in Wisconsin and captures King at the height of his playing, during his time at Stax records. He is in good form and has a band with a horn section, unlike his famous Stax live albums (e.g.,Live Wire, Blues Power). He goes through his normal set, but includes some great surprises such as a great version of "Personal Manager", one of his classic self-penned slow blues numbers. This tune had previously only appeared on two of his albums- the original and one other live version (with no horns!!).The sound quality is fair, as I guess you would expect, there is tape hiss, but this is a great addition to anyone's blues collection. I am surprised that Scorsese's "The Blues" does not have a CD of Albert on offer!
This CD was produced by Kevin Eggers who released his double album "Live Blues" for Utopia Records in the mid 1970s (This has been rereleased this year as "Blues From The Road"). This CD is excellent! The versions of his standards sound fresh and there is the tantalizing surprise of his instrumental version of "You Don't Love Me" (from his first full studio LP "Years Gone By"). He includes a 17 minute jam on "Please Come Back To Me" and his "As The Years Go Passing By" is the best version of this tune ever! He is in top form and doesn't even stop the show or complain when there is feedback from the mikes during his performance. This was the Albert who was so influential on blues and guitar in general, the real Albert King. Get this recording, it is the first wholly new selection released from King since 1995. There was the European release of the set "Rainin in California", but that was in the early 1980's and he was with his Fantasy Records band in another groove. This is Albert at age 46 and in top form, how he really played! This CD is essential for blues lovers!

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.
