notes from the underground is very satisfying if you love versatality in jazz these guys are unbelievable and ive heard stories about them and how they felt it just came together when they met this is no wonder when you hear this album-cd, then what makes them equally as sick is they turn out stuff like snake anthony on the invisible cd snake anthony would have been proud of this one from hermetos daydream, the saint , la garonne, orbits, uncle chubb, all the way through to cant get what you want on the 11th track on the remastered 2nd edition which is worth the extra money that track alone is like the icing on the cake, friday afternoon in the universe, its a jungle in here, out louder with john scofield released late last year tonic was another one just bought it based on the samples im gonna love it these guys are the s--t. i listened and still do to weather report and jaco pastorius thinking that was probably gonna be the extent of my jazz collection boy was i wrong i stumbled upon these guys glad i did oh yeah the dropper ,the song felic starts out with some cool bass guitar riff gonna buy that one too, but i gotta have the time and the space....oh yeah thats when we knew we were the best when snake anthony come on the road with us long live jazz thanks medeski martin wood you are truly off the table!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album from a Great Band.......2005-01-25

I consider MMW to be one of the most innovative bands of their time. They push the limits of what is considered to be jazz with each studio effort. Although I own all of their albums I feel that "Notes From the Underground" is my favorite. It has a sort of loose, free-form feel while maintaining the funky core that they have become known for. Although this album takes a couple listens it leaves you feeling that you've experienced a unique journey.

Album Description

British Folk revival can be traced back to the likes of Ewan MacColl, Hamish Imlach and the deeply political Scottish '50s Folk scene. It took a seriously non-traditional turn when it was picked up by the new breed of young turks like Davy Graham, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, who began to turn Soho into a European version of Greenwich Village in the early '60s. By the end of that decade the integration between Folk, Blues, Jazz and all music beyond had created a wild array of new performers including Pentangle, Roy Harper & Mellow Candle. It was still Folk music, all right, but not as anyone knew it. A latter day term for this new generation of the genre is Acid Folk, due to its post-Psychedelic elements. There is most certainly a correlation between this CD and the likes of Noggin The Nog and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. Castle Music. 2006.

This is a great collection, not full of fluff as I feel like many of these types of collections are. However, the CD I received through Amazon is not quite what is listed above - short two songs listed and different continuity.

5 out of 5 stars Clan of Xymox rules!.......2006-08-23

Xymox sticks to their dark moods, but this album has a lot of energetic songs ("I Want You Now"). As a longtime fan, I was very pleased with this return to their root sound. They continue to mature and evolve, but this album really knocks it out of the park.

5 out of 5 stars keep you coming back for more.......2006-07-11

What can I say about this CD? I love this band. I love that I know I'll love their stuff every time a new CD comes out. They're like that big, warm, fuzzy sweater on a rainy day. So comforting and familiar they are. Coming out of Amsterdam in 1984, their semi-extensive career has been a musical exploration down many avenues. "Notes" gets them (and their fans) back in touch with that fusing of electronic and goth that defines their finest moments. And unlike some other bands in that gothic/dark electro group, they do it all with a particular unpretentiousness that's so refreshing. In between all the minor chords and Ronny Moorings' reverbed vocals, there remains a delicate quality to their music; they certainly revisit their brief stay on label 4AD, with moments reminiscent of Dead Can Dance and other former label-mates. Some fine examples of programming (as expected) and just enough catchy numbers to keep you coming back for more only serves to strengthen an already fantastic collection of music.

5 out of 5 stars This is the marker for excellence.......2006-02-19

Sometimes it puzzles me why Clan of Xymox is not more readily accepted as goth music *legends* - especially in the US club scene. I worship this band. Over 15 years have passed since their debut on the 4AD label with Clan of Xymox (1985) and later Medusa (1987). Before that they had released Subsequent Pleasures on their own label in 1984. They've been on a major label (Wing/PolyGram), played the corporate game, and came back to their roots establishing their own label time and again. Stamina, if nothing else, should make them something other bands should aspire to. Keeping up with current trends and most importantly, still remaining true to themselves and the scene, CoX has continued to give us incredible, quality releases year after year. No where else has a band fused electronics and organic music like CoX has continued to do. In an interview they did with us in February 2001, Ronny commented, "As you know Clan of Xymox always delivered an album with a hybrid combination between keyboards and guitars, only the overall atmosphere this time is much darker than the previous releases. As far as I can see this is the line I will follow for the future as I feel this suits me the best and feel the most comfortable with; the dark side of Clan of Xymox! "

That being said, personally, I cannot tell you what a comfort this new CD has been for me in the past few weeks - especially regarding the happenings here in the U.S. I've drowned myself in this CD, over and over again and nothing has felt so soothing and "right" in a long, long time. It was like a homecoming in a way. Comfort in old familiars. Its classic Xymox in feel and darker tones, but its also current, with updated electronics and club-friendly beats melded with crunchy guitars. Its yet another perfect step forward in their progression as well as one of their most "atmospheric" CDs in a long time. The title Notes from the Underground is appropriately descriptive - having never lost touch with goth aesthetics. The production on this CD is incredible. Never has CoX sounded more polished and more mature with every note and sound tweaked to perfection. In appearance, its utterly beautiful - the cover in brilliant green and black covered in cryptic symbols and words and contrasting inside the liner notes and on the CD itself - an elegant and graceful spider spread out on a sea of crimson.

The first track, "Innocent," opens with a scratchy intro that gives way to classic CoX sounding keyboards that set the feel and beat of the song. Slightly reminiscent of their 80's sounding keys, its tempered with a darker, atmospheric minor synth line as Ronny's vocals pour over them like familiar and warm worn-velvet. Guitars scream accents and reinforce a sense of urgency related in the lyrics.

"I Want You Now" catches the ear immediately with an addictive guitar line and steady drumming. Electronics are used more as appropriately placed accents in this song... lots of noises and twitching going on and off throughout like audio-candy. Ronny croons, "Love.... love me not" with that deep whispery voice and I could just melt to my knees on the dance floor.

"Internal Darkness" follows at a more laid back beat. Loping along in self-indulged misery, its gloomy goth at its best ending with a plaintive piano line...

Sunshine, I wait for dawns recurrent light
I ponder in my narrow hour and warm myself
Moonlight calmly shines through the night
I stare at these old photographs, my heart beats fast
I find no peace to read or write
My soul is lost, my spirits down
There's no one in the dark
my little world has lost its light

Track 4 - "At Your Mercy" opens with a haunting sound scape - desolate and surreal with its echoes and chimes and bird calls. You can almost feel the dark mist before the guitar line swoops in to pick you out of the fog. The guitar is probably my favorite element of this song - at times tickling our ears with a Spanish flair. Incredibly dancy it plays into seductive, hopeless lyrics ... "She said she'd always love me, she said she's always need me...how could I could break away once she said this thing to me, she knew I was going, she knew I was going away..."
"Anguish" is a complex track, changing tempo and mood many times through out - sometimes enjoyably sinister, sometimes contemplative depressive. Although probably not as viable on the dance floor as some of the other tracks, it is a song with alot of musical merit... a journey that changes and morphs right before your ears from steady, driven tempos, to rumbling punk-like bass lines, to near silence interludes full of minimal electronic accents. At the end, it plunges into a stark soundscape and if you listen carefully, you'll hear a keyboard line that will be repeated with more force in the track
"Something Wrong".

"Number One' starts off with some interesting electronic rumblings that rather remind me of Chewy from StarWars (credit to my child-like imagination). Whatever it was intended to be, it adds mysterious texture before the song kicks into this fast paced, up beat song. Smart guitar lines drive it and layers of keys in the background fill it. Reminiscent of classic Xymox, its an easily recognizable as one of their songs no matter if you've heard it before or not.

Mournful piano lines open the sad ballad-like "Into Ber Weh." Accented by delicate acoustic guitar and pensive vocals, its easily the most beautiful piece on the CD. However, if I had to chose a favorite track at this point in time, I do believe it would be "The Bitter Sweet" with all its dynamic changes, mysterious tone and perfect fusion of electronics and guitars. It opens with chiming darkness and a bubbling synth line infused with very industrial sounding noise. Ronny's voice announces, "I'm not a savior, I'm not a saint, I'm not an angel who's coming in, I dont believe in anything pure like you do" twice while intricate textured noises come to life in the background. The tempo picks up slightly and then fades into an angelic chorus until the song erupts into a new, faster tempo completely out of the blue. This transition is my absolute favorite part of the song. There's nothing like a good anticipated tempo change on the dance floor for added drama. After being electronic-heavy in the beginning, you get a good dose of guitar midway through the song and the beat continues to drive the song home while melody lines that appeared in the beginning are repeated at this new tempo. What a rush!

"Liberty," the title track to the single we saw previewed last December, is included here as track number 9. At the time of release, Anthony had written: " 'Liberty' is a song that could be interpreted different ways. " I guess it's gonna be, a question of my sanity - I guess it's gonna be against the heart of liberty." The things that lie at the " heart of liberty " are the things that keep us sane. They are our freedoms, however we define them. There is such an erosion of personal freedom throughout our life, that it leads to real desperation, a sickness of the soul. We might very well " warm to the thought of being through." Eternity still remains a veiled promise. "

"Something Wrong" is a fine example of their excellent and forward evolving synth work opening with some heavenly lines before plunging into a more desperate and sinister melody first heard at the end of "Anguish." The song moves along at a moderate pace, fusing guitar and bass in here and there and still, that keyboard line sings out in the background - akin to mournful strings, its get louder and louder and finally takes over in a furry of emotion.

Track 11, "Mysterium" was quite an unexpected treat for me and a demonstration of this bands wide ranging talent. Its an dark ambient, instrumental tracks slightly reminiscent of the Murder of Angels project put out on Middle Pillar Presents. Dark and thick in noises and gloomy atmospheres, its primordial ooze, its an industrial wasteland haunted by ghosts from different realities.

The final listed track, "The Same Dream" starts out with a version of that same synth line used in "Something Wrong" and "Anguish" neatly tying this CD together with its thematic inclusion. Sonja Rozenblum provides airy, heavenly backing vocals contrasting against Ronny's smooth voice. The beat is synth-pop in nature making it a prime candidate for the dance clubs while remaining true to its dark nature without getting too "poppy".

In conclusion, Notes from the Underground is a solid 12-song release with no bad apples in the bunch demonstrating once again that Clan of Xymox is one of the leading bands in this genre and one that deserves quite a bit more accolades than it gets. This is the standard other bands should aspire to. This is the marker for excellence from thematic approach, to infusion of organic and electronic elements, to production and presentation. This is quite possibly, the best release I'll hear all year. This is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars a great album.......2006-02-15

Since the last Clan of Xymox album "Creatures", expectations were set high for the follow-up. "Notes from the Underground" and it's almost in the same high class as its predecessor.
The album begins with the very strong "Innocent", which has some Depeche Mode influences. When I say Depeche Mode, I am not talking about their last pathetic effort, but their prime time in the late eighties. To notice the change and the more electronic sound is easy. "Innocent" really is a pearl and clearly a potential club hit. After that, "I Want You Now" follows and this one is also a catchy piece of music.
There is a melancholic layer surrounding the entire album and sometimes I come to think about the album "Hidden Faces", which probably is the Clan of Xymox album most similar to this one. "Notes from the Underground" is more even, the best songs on this album reach a level no other bands comes near to. There are really great songs here, and the overall impression is outstanding. When it comes to Clan of Xymox, that is what we expect anyway. The conclusion is that this is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Full of musical surprises and a must get.......2006-01-30

Another brilliant album by clan of xymox. You can imediately tell its their newest album ( year 2000 that is ) because of the new eletronic sounds heard as soon as you begin you play the first track, be warned though, i thought there was something wrong with my CD player in the beginning of the first track, innocent. The vocals are much clearer on this album and the lyrics seem to differ too. Its more of an album based on the idea of listening to the sounds rather than the vocals. Its a mellow and relaxing album with a racey track at the end, titled The same dream with added female vocals giving a nice ending to the album. Its a beautiful album with the darkwave influences still there. Personaly i like the tracks innocent and anguish the best. Mysterium is certainly a weird track but pleaseing to whoever listens to it. The bass seems to toned down a bit, as you cant hear it as well in this album. A great album altogether, full of musical surprises and a must get for any dedicated clan of xymox fan like myself.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for 60's music collectors!.......2004-12-10

A BIG thank you to Big Beat UK for releasing this compilation of 4 very rare EP's from San Fran's psychedelic underground, otherwise known as the "San Francisco Sound". If you were lucky enough to find and purchase VG+ to near mint original pressings of these EP's, God Bless You and because you have spent over $4,500 easy. Big Beat UK have done a fine job remastering these gems on CD as the sound quality is superb considering the sources. The Frumious Bandersnatch was taken from the master tapes and every song on their EP is a gem. "Hearts To Cry" is an incredible song and features some of the finest 2-way acid guitar attack to come out of the west coast during 68'. It's a crying shame this band never signed to a major label and released a full length LP. The Mad River EP is a psych masterpiece, although it was dubbed from acetate. "A Gazelle" should be played at maximum volume with the speakers facing out of the house windows! Notes from the Underground released 2 LP's after the EP and is decent late 60's rock. Country Joe and the Fish's EP is a must have. These guys basically started it all. The EP versions are a bit faster and looser than the LP versions, but nonetheless are performed with conviction and assurance that a "change is gonna come". Overall, all 4 EP's are ESSENTIAL listening for 60's music collectors and lovers alike!

4 out of 5 stars excellent 60s psych compilation.......2000-12-23

this is a highly recommended release. the version of section 43 is actually probably even better than the one on the lp. country joe &the fish are in fine form on the ep. mad river's amphetamine gazelle ( also done on their debut record) is a wild and brilliant slice of acid rock, as is the weird ep only anti war anthem orange fire. i also strongly recommend both of their albums, which i feel are two of the stronger san francisco area releases of the period. notes from the underground, despite their moniker, won't remind you of the great dostoevsky story, they were really a fine garage, or proto -power pop aggregation, with a good timey flavoring somewhat like the lovin' spoonful or bay area contemporaries the charlatans. the frumious bandersnatch (their name taken from lewis carroll's poem jabberwocky)serve up some wonderful and exhilirating psych that probably is the highlight of the cd along with mad river's material. the guitar work, ominous bass riff, great vocals, and powerful lyrics in hearts to cry is amazing, and the song is a san francisco acid classic. the other two bandersnatch tracks are also very good. there's very little filler on this release and it definitely should be heard by acid rock fans and sixties enthusiasts

4 out of 5 stars i cant believe no one reviewed this thing yet?!.......2000-10-06

Berkeley was at the absolute heart of the sixties. I could have done w/out Letters from the underground but between Country Joe & the Fish (the only band on the album people may have heard or heard of), Frumious, and Mad River ya' go to many a place. This is really a piece of history-a psychadelic wonderland.

5 out of 5 stars [...] it up Pigface!.......2004-03-24

It's almost ten years old and i'm still lovin' it. Asphole is a great opening track- percussive and full of chants, screams, and effects. Divebomber is good punk-style Pigface with Flea from RHCP on bass (I think) thrown in for good measure. [...] it Up has the band coming off like psychotic cheerleaders strung out on heroin. A great sing-along track. Chicksaw has badass chick vocals from Leslie of Ruby and Silverfish. Psalm Springs Eternal is funny until Steamroller tears it to shreds with it's tongue in cheek dirtball metal vocals and screams so distorted that it seems impossible that they could come a human's throat. All of this set to Atkin's incredible drumming style. A true industrial classic.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible mix of genres and sonics. Must have indie........1998-11-25

A great pigface album that spans many genres. Track 6 is one of my alltime favorites. If you don't have any Pigface already, this is a good starter into one of the greats. Worth the money.

For folks who got turned onto Medeski Martin & Wood through the trio's later albums, MMW's 1992 debut will come as something of a shock. There's no trace of John Medeski's soulful organ workouts here--he sticks strictly to piano--and the record's disjointed rhythms and dissonant tonal shadings bring it closer to John Zorn territory or that of John Lurie and his Lounge Lizards (which makes sense, considering that Medeski and drummer Billy Martin had previously worked with Zorn and, in Martin's case, in Lurie's Lounge Lizards). But though the slinky grooves and oddball humor of records like It's a Jungle in Here are largely absent, Notes from the Underground still stands as an impressive debut from an immensely talented trio. --Dan Epstein

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Phat! Not the MMW most people know.......2002-03-30

This is real Jazz folks. This is not Duke Ellington, this is not Miles Davis. Those reviewers that gave this album a negative review because it's not "traditional" jazz were completely missing the beauty of this album. No this is not traditional jazz, it only resembles traditional jazz in that it's acoustic and they do a cover of "Caravan". Jazz is not traditional, jazz is about breaking the rules and going beyond traditional boundaries. MMW has this concept hardwired into their brains. They find a way to bring a gut wrenching chaotic beauty out of what only SEEMS like noise. This album indeed contains less of their "experiemental" or "random" noise but it still has it's fair share. The only reason I can see someone not liking this album is if they don't like or don't understand complex harmonies. Creed and Brittainy Spears are popular for a reason - they are EASY to listen to. MMW often is not easy to listen to, but if you want to hear some of the best musicians in the world (Medeski and Wood went to NEC and Martin to Julliard) give you a piece of their hearts and minds listen to this album.

One of THE MOST beautiful songs of all time IMHO is La Garronne, track 3. I also believe MMW's best groove is on this album as well, that's United track 8. I would like to quickly qualify that I could never truly pick a favorite song or album of MMW or most any other band either, but I use these terms to illustrate just how insanely great I think these songs are. This of course is my humble opinion but as a Jazz pianist of many many years I hope that if you are interested in expanding your musical horizons that you will consider my opinion of value and buy this album. Yes, it is strange in some places, but all of MMW's albums have strangeness. If at first you don't dig it, put it away and listen to it again when you get bored of all your other albums. I have yet to get bored of this album.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best MMW.......2002-03-11

Do not get me wrong, I can not think of a more enjoyable band to see live or listen to in the car then MMW. But their first CD is just not that good. As someone else said, if I want a jazz Cd I will go buy Duke Ellington. This CD has too much basic jazz, not like their next albums which had a much more eccentric and off the wall jazz feel. Not very jam oriented either. The one good point of this disc would be the cover of the Duke's hit, "Caravan," which I would just prefer to have the original of. Do not buy if this is your first MMW pick. For only the serious collector.

3 out of 5 stars ...the bland before the storm..........2002-01-08

...this was the first mmw disc i purchased and really had a hard time enjoyin it. as far as their foray into traditional jazz, this was very average (outside of about two cuts). if i was gonna buy a standard jazz album, it would be somethin by duke ellington, horace silver, miles, etc.,....
...they really came into their own, however, when they began to expand into the realm of jazz-fusion. if you are a jazz purist, then this is probably the only disc from them you would enjoy, but if your musical tastes are a bit more diverse i would suggest some of their other works.

5 out of 5 stars this is just fan-damn-tastic.......2001-03-26

Since MMW don't seem to get any airplay, at least not in Utah, I picked up albums that were recomended by others. For some bizarre reason, none of my friends or aquaintences ever mentioned this fabulous piece of work to me. i have owned it for several months now, and even though it is impossible for me to choose a favorite MMW album, it seems that this is the one that i tend to listen to most. Granted, it doesn't have the fat organ hooks that grab you and refuse to let go, but that doesn't mean it isn't highly addictive. No funk? listen again my friends. Some of those bass lines are far from typical jazz. So there isn't a DJ. It certainly doesn't suffer noticably. This is a very strong showing from three damn fine musicians. bottom line: DON'T BE AFRAID OF JAZZ. It's the good stuff kids.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best, buy last dance to dance trance instead!!.......2001-02-05

This just isn't the band's best work. They have peanut butter and jelly but forgot to bring the bread. Their latter work is so much better than this album."Hermeto's Daydream" is an awesome song despite the other songs! Just buy last chance instead!!!!
