The Clifford Brown-Max Roach quintet was already one of the best in modern jazz, but when they added Sonny Rollins to the fray in late 1955, it became a lineup for the ages. Basin Street, recorded in early 1956, marks the studio debut of Rollins with the band, and the result is a supercharged highlight of the postbop era. The three furiously paced standards that kick off the set feature superb blowing and crafty arrangements that offer spontaneous intros and rhythmic shifts. Of special note are the contributions of pianist Richie Powell, Bud's younger brother, who not only adds three excellent compositions (the intricate "Powell's Prances," the poignant "Time," and the irresistibly catchy "Gertrude's Bounce"), but also proves himself to be a standout soloist and accompanist. Of course, Brown's bright tone and remarkably fluid ideas are in full bloom as well. Sadly, the quintet would record only once more (Plus 4, issued under Rollins's name) before the June 1956 accident that claimed the lives of Brown and Powell. --Marc Greilsamer

Here's a CD to get for your next party, particularly if your guests are unfamiliar with Kermit Ruffins. My introduction to his music came through a college buddy who has family in New Orleans and visits the city frequently, taking in its still vibrant music scene.
Well, since I like the trumpet-oriented jazz of Freddie Hubbard and Herb Alpert, I thought that perhaps I would enjoy Ruffins based on my friend's recommendation. And I do.
Live at Vaughan's is packed with high energy party jazz and although its a little jivey and parochial in places, its a CD that's easy to enjoy. My favorites are World On A String, Hide the Reefer, If You Want Me To Stay, the gorgeous instrumental Be Thankful For What You've Got. Those last two in particular show what Ruffins is capable of when he gets serious with his trumpet. Only the unnecessary introduction and the exceedingly lame O-O-H Child detract from making Live at Vaughan's a five-star effort. That last song is so jejune that no matter how valiantly Ruffins or anyone else tries to improve it, they are destined to fail.
I have always enjoyed New Orleans music as suited to certain times and places, but have never actually bought any until now. Kermit Ruffins shows ample talent here and I will certainly explore his music further. You don't necessarily have to be into New Orleans music or jazz in general to like this, you just have to like music in general. Check this CD out, you'll be glad you did.

This brand new, 2007 latest release from Kermit Ruffins shakes the floors. The 13 tracks cover the full spectrum of his talents with a live performance. If you like N.O. jazz you'll love this cd. His playing and the great recording really bring New Orleans jazz home. Try it. You'll enjoy every minute, over and over.

      Album Description

      This rare performance was recorded by Goodman himself during a July 1954 engagement at the Basin Street East jazz club, in New York. This particular sextet had been formed for a tour (which was later cancelled) with Louis Armstrong's All Stars in the spring of 1953. Although all of the band members were superb musicians, the most interesting pairing here is that of Benny and trumpeter Charlie Shavers. A veteran of the Swing era, Shavers had extensive experience with both small groups (he had been a soloist and arranger for the renowned John Kirby Sextet) and big bands (as a featured soloist with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra). This superb performance contains a lot of wonderful music by an otherwise unrecorded Benny Goodman Sextet. 19 tracks including 'After You've Gone', 'On The Sunny Side Of The Street', 'Our Love Is Here To Stay', 'I Found A New Baby' and more.         This is the second volume of a number of CD issues culling the Yale University holdings of Benny Goodman's unissued tapes made from the 1950s to his death in 1986. This release contains material recorded live at Basin Street in March 1955 - all different sides from those included in the 3-LP Book of the Month Club set of this engagement's performances issued in the late `70s. Ruby Braff (tp) Urbie Green (tb) and Paul Quinichette (ts) join Benny on the front line, with the inimitable Teddy Wilson fronting a rhythm section that includes Perry Lopez (gtr) Milt Hinton (b) and Bobby Donaldson (d). Not all the players are on every track, except for BG and the rhythm section. All the tracks are Goodman warhorses - sides associated with him going back to the 1930s, items the Basin Street crowd was probably expecting them to play. Teddy Wilson is in great form, from the way up-tempo solo he takes on RUNNIN' WILD to his melodic ballad magic on the slow BODY AND SOUL. Paul Quinichette (the Vice President) is most Lester-like on his featured number, Basie's (actually Herschel Evans's) BLUE AND SENTIMENTAL. My only complaint, very mild, is the sound, which to my ears appears muffled and unexpansive, probably the fault of the room than the equipment. If you have the BOMC set, you'll want this to get more of the same great stuff; if you don't, and you're a Goodman aficionado, you'll want this because it's top-grade Benny with an exceptional group of musicians.
