Jane Monheit has a lovely voice, one that in its purest, most lilting form reminds you of the young Barbra Streisand, with the show-stopping qualities that suggests. Her haunting rendition of Sergio Mendes'"So Many Stars," the runaway highlight of Surrender, is also one of the best things she's ever done. (Mendes arranged and produced the track and plays keyboard on it.) Since she stopped trying so hard to be a jazz singer and found her mark as a popular vocalist specializing in Brazilian music (there are also guest turns by singer Ivan Lins and harmonica great Toots Thielemans), Monheit has sounded more at home with herself. The problem is, as delectable as her instrument is, her performances, more often than not, have a perplexing emptiness to them: they're like romantic settings with candles providing the requisite glow but no real warmth. She's only 29, which means she has plenty of time to deepen as an artist. But it could also be that what you hear now is what you're going to get in the future. --Lloyd Sachs

1 out of 5 stars Jane Monheit Surrenders to Mediocrity.......2007-06-25

Jane Monheit, a once-promising talent, released "Surrender" in 2007. It is her weakest, most spiritless release to date. Her "Surrender" song interpretations are unremarkable, undemanding, and unconvincing. Her vocal stylizations distinctly lack variety and virtuosity. Most condemnable of all, her uninspiring delivery makes every lyrical sentiment of every song sound routine and insincere.

Her vocals are framed cheaply by "canned" instrumental (especially the string) arrangements that sound like some of the worst Muzak or "elevator music" ever recorded. Jane Monheit and crew are creating audio mannequins on "Surrender"--lifelike but bloodless songs that remind me of puddles of standing water on a city pavement at night, reflecting light, but flowing nowhere. And that's the once-potent Jane Monheit on vocals, lazily poking at the puddles with a twig. If "Never Never Land," her debut album, suggested a young vocalist on the rise, budding like a rose, "Surrender" features the same singer, clueless, compromising, and on her knees. "Surrender" indeed.

4 out of 5 stars I rather like it.......2007-06-17

One thing is for sure, everyone who thought that Norah Jones is a good singers should listen to this! Jane Monheit is a real singer and musician. Jones is merely a "wannabe".

I have listened to this album on and off at work for two weeks now and I find it, at best, quite touching and sensual, and, at worst, undemanding. I think one could use this album as background music. But if one turns up the volume we are presented with some very stylish interpretations of some standards. If I was in a piano bar and hearing this music, I would be very satisfied.

Jane Monheit has quite a powerful and expressive voice. Here basic timbre is very attractive and she has a good tessitura and she sounds unforced from the top to the bottom of her range. Id est: she can sing.

Her instrumental accompaniment is colourful enough and never overwhelms the voice. If I had any criticism of this album it would be that it is a trifle unadventurous - it is clear to me that Monheit is capable of doing many things in music.

I would enjoy listening to this album juxtaposed Gabriela Anders's album "Last Tango In Rio".

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant........2007-06-15

She may have started out as a jazz vocalist but these days Jane Monheit seems to have ditched any semblance of swing in favour of sickly string arrangements.

Her voice is lush and exquisite but she overdoes the breathiness - to the point that one wonders if a ventilator is required - and sticks too much to indistinguishable, slow bossa novas and ballads.
The result is a florid and bland album that washes over the listener.

My favourite tracks are : "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" and "So Many Stars".

3 out of 5 stars Folks listen to RC, his review is a laser beam on target. Statement album needed badly. .......2007-06-10

My small addendum. Monheit has the best voice in jazz today. I'm a 5 year fan.
On stage 3 weeks ago in Boston with her band she was great. But she badly needs a statement album - one that defines her and her talent. She has been with at least 3 labels and I think that they have been pulling this immensely talented singer in too many directions. Her vocal breadth is so extraordinary and she can do so much vocally that she ends up doing a little of everything well but her albums are not cohesive sounding. They sound watered down and undefined. You never know what you are going to get from song to song and it's been getting worse on the newer albums. I was hoping with the change to a Jazz label like Concord that this would be behind her but not yet. What are those A&R types doing? I even congratulated here on her new label after the show and there was an unstated acknowledgment that her and Sony were not a good fit. Like RC I hope the next CD is great, because I'm running out of patience after 7 CD's and several other tracks on various artists albums and 6 live shows. She is t o o good t o o waste. So how about it producers? - Give us some jazz, give us some swing. Give us the real Jane and get rid of the strings.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Voice.......2007-06-01

It's been a jong time since a voice like Jane Monheit was heard. It is notable by its clarity and sensuousnessI intend to buy other CDs by her.

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

3 out of 5 stars Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Pretty good CD. There is no doubt of Chieli's guitar mastery, but other than a couple of good hooks I'll most likely push this one to the back of the rack after a few more plays.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-05-03

Chieli continues to impress me with his unique style! I was not sure if I would like this album as well as his last (Got It Goin On) but his work seems to just keep getting better. A very nice blend of new Chieli with his original band Special EFX. I love every song! A must have for any smooth jazz lover.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Surrender.......2007-04-14

Chieli Minucci is great as usual. He has a way with a guitar that is very satisfying to the mind. I try to get all his albums, especially the old Special EFX albums. those are unbelievably great

4 out of 5 stars Very pleasant and unusual music. .......2007-03-07

Led by Chieli Minucci and the late George Jinda, Special EFX became one of the seminal forces in the early days of Smooth Jazz,.
"Sweet Surrender" is now the fourth and latest project since Minucci resurrected the Special EFX banner a few years back. "Sweet Surrender" features Chieli Minucci alongside 'core' Special EFX band members saxophonist and flutist David Mann, drummer Lionel Cordew, vocalist and percussionist Philip Hamilton, pianist and keyboardist Jay Rowe and bassist Jerry Brooks, as well a few guest musicians.
The album showcases a fresh mix of irresistible grooves filled with funky memorable hooks, lyrical sweeping melodies, head-nodding polyrhythmic romps and dance inducing and body shaking rhythms. Highlights on the CD include "Mystical" the album's first single, sure to skyrocket to the top of the charts with its funky syncopated melody, surprising chord changes and infectious grooves and the tour-de-force "Au Naturale" which exposes Chieli's virtuoso guitar skills and keen compositional chops (Minucci wrote all the songs on the CD).
To sum it up: Minucci at his best and most creative since early Special EFX.
This well crafted album is an instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional CD! Must-have CD to add to your Jazz collection........2007-03-01

I have had the opportunity to listen to Sweet Surrender multiple times to let it "sink in". Chieli's latest musical masterpiece has it all! Contemporary Smooth Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Fusion Jazz, Soul Jazz, Theatrical Jazz, and more! The thing that blows my mind about this CD is the vast ground of musical composition this CD covers. What ultimately brings Sweet Surrender together is not just Chieli Minucci's talent, but the talent from all artists who contributed to Sweet Surrender: Jerry Brooks, Lionel Cordew, Jay Rowe, Philip Hamilton, David Mann, Will Brock, Dave Anderson, Wayne Batchelor, and others. I noticed a slight deviation of what in my mind I believe to be Chieli Minucci Music, this being a very positive deviation. Chieli has molded some new twists, sounds, and beats into this CD and has left a brand new impression on me. I believe Chieli has captured my Sweet Surrender with this release. Way to go Chieli & Special EFX!! Superb!

Being from Philly, I was able to see them in concert at the Five Spot
(Black Lily) and was blown away by the two of them. Their music is welcoming, it's peaceful and soulful. I asked her to perform "Stars" for me and my husband. It was unbelievable. Every Tuesday their band would head to the stage and the rest is as they say history.
Thanks Kindred

4 out of 5 stars GROWN FOLK MUSIC.......2007-03-13

This husband and wife team is just awesome. The band and background singers are superb as well. One of my favorite cuts is "Stars", which is lush, sexy and just plain old beautiful. I would want my husband to feel that way about me!!! Ursual Rucker the diva griot does her thing and does it well on the cut "We", exhorting togetherness which is like the song says a beautiful thing. I even like the intro with Ryva and her british lilt! My favorite song is "I AM" which is so girl power and motivating. Go get this album because it is worth while.

5 out of 5 stars Bought It Twice.......2006-12-27

I bought this CD for my husband the week it came out, about 3 years ago. I claimed it as my own, soon after. He reclaimed it and took it to the barber shop where he worked and someone walked out with it. I was crushed! So I bought it again this year, along with the new CD. You can't get good music like this. Uncommercialized and great for all moods.

My husband and I go see them in concert, everytime they come to Detroit. They are a dynamic duo. I hope they don't fall prey to the industry, as their look is evolving into what records exec would have you look like, rather than the natural look, I'm come to expect. Nevertheless.......I am a fan and will continue to be. I highly recommend this CD and the new one. Look out for those hidden tracks.....gems to say the least.

Surrender kicks off with a nervous, vibrating whine that brings to mind the first three seconds of Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." But it's just a tease; on their third album, techno's Chemical Brothers have all but turned their back on the rock muscle that earned 1997's Dig Your Own Hole gold status in the U.S. Oh, there are guest rock vocalists galore--New Order's Bernard Sumner, Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, and Oasis's Noel Gallagher--but only the latter brings out the crunching big beats that the Chems all but invented. The rest of Surrender hews closer to the thinner, synthesized textures of the electro revival that's swept the dance-music world. Much of the time that's just swell. The leadoff track, "Music: Response," is a seamless trip back to 1985, complete with vocoderized singing and Morse-code beeps. And Sumner's "Out of Control" replicates the thrill of hearing the gloomy Joy Division morph into a swell synthpop band. But without the propulsion that their trademark aggression usually provides, the Chems just barely come up with enough ideas to carry the listener all the way through an album, much less rock a dance floor for an hour at a time. --Jeff Salamon

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A successful change of pace.......2006-08-29

I actually rate this as a 4-and-a-bit star album but rounded it up to 5 to redress the generally average reviews it's received over the years. While I enjoy reading the music press, sometimes they get it plain wrong; such, I feel, is the case with 'Surrender'. Many reviews have unfavourably compared it with the Chems' previous album 'Dig Your Own Hole', claiming 'Surrender' to be a flat and/or repetitive follow-up. In my opinion nothing could be further from the truth.

'Dig Your Own Hole' sits at the hard-edged pioneering end of big beat, relying on riff and huge rhythm to drive the tracks home; it's a fine album if that is what you are seeking. 'Surrender' is a TOTALLY different beast; it's more of a house/chill album and a far more painterly affair than its generally monchromatic predecessor.

On 'Surrender', the Chems focus more on sonic adventure and melodic texture than on big beat. This lends it a greater variety of atmosphere, and whilst it is not uniformly excellent and does run slightly out of puff towards the end it is still a rich and rewarding listen, with a greater variety of styles than any of their other releases. Consider the singles culled from it - 'Music:Response', 'Out Of Control', 'Let Forever Be' and 'Hey Boy Hey Girl'; add memorable tracks such as 'Influence', 'Got Glint' and my all-time favourite Chems track 'The Sunshine Underground' and you've got an album for many moods and occasions, more so than on any of their other releases, fine though they are. Sure, it has some lesser tracks but they help rather than hinder; I can play it before I go out or after I come home, or Tuesday night, Sunday afternoon, whenever. It sits at the poppier end of electronica, and is definitely recommended for those who like an album to take them somewhere and are happy to enjoy the ride.

3 out of 5 stars Liking something because it fits your genre is limiting your brain........2005-07-29

So if hip hop is your thing do you like bad hip hop? Or trance? or anything?

Using your brain is much better. Find the BEST IN ANY GENRE and it will be interesting. Metal, punk, jazz even C&W. Much better than the worst of your chosen genre.

Now about this recording. I have thousands of CDs. Most of the trance or hip hop goes into the oval file if you ask me. Most of it is hardly worth listening too it's all so similar.

3.5 stars. Good. Nice to listen to. Not ground shaking but I have to say these guys are into sound - not the stupid rules of the genre. That's what makes this interesting. Instead of a weak copy of other peoples music I can tell these guys are really into listening and doing something different. Pretty rare in this genre area. So buy if you are adventurous. Avoid if you're mind is in a genre tunnel.

And if you are wondering where this music came from all the better. Progenitors are always better than followers. Find the progenitors music and it will be rougher but more interesting. I'll take creativity and adventure over polish any day. These guys had something to do with inventing this music but they've moved on to other areas because they have searching minds: Klaus Schulze, Psycik TV, Eno, Terry Riley, Le Monte Young, Steve Reich, Jon Hassell, Kluster, Ashra Temple.

5 out of 5 stars My First Chemical Brothers Album.......2005-06-04

I just bought this one out of curiosity - I'd heard a lot of positive publicity , plus the sample of 'Block Rockin' Beats'. The songs reflect the use of varied beats, which is why they're called 'The Beatmasters'. My favourite was 'Got Glint?'. Haven't heard another song like it till date. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Chemical Brothers Best Album! Vastly underrated........2005-05-09

I don't understand why this album gets panned by critics and fans of the Chemical Brothers. In my opinion this is their best CD. So many styles of music were explored here with many having their roots in other genres (shoegaze, house, acid, trance). Overall this is a much more varied album than both Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole combined. I was tired of those two albums years and years ago but this one still gets played by me amazingly often.

Favorite tracks: Asleep From Day, The Sunshine Underground, Racing The Tide, Dream On

4 out of 5 stars Unjustly Underated Album by the Chems.......2005-01-11

Okay, Exit Planet Dust is hands down the best from this Big Beat duo, but that this album has been bashed in comparison to its predecessor (Dig Your Own Hole) is unfair. Unlike eevryone else, I think the album is far more interesting than Hole because none of the songs sound alike. If you like techno, Under the Influence is perfect; if you want chill, Sunshine Underneath and Asleep from Day deliver. Plus, Hey Boy, Hey Girl has to be the best dance song ever. Due to song number 4 being a bore, I can't give this album 5 stars. However, don't believe all the hype - this album is amazing.

It's been more than a decade since Ottmar Liebert came on the national music scene with his debut album, Nouveau Flamenco. The German-born guitarist brought a hybrid approach to this passionate Spanish guitar style that made it more atmospheric and brought him one of the largest audiences for an instrumentalist. Each succeeding album has been a deeper exploration of this approach, expanding it into orchestral and ambient terrain. You can hear the guitarist stretching beyond convention on tracks like "Waiting 4 Stars 2 Fall," creating a more cinematic expanse with synthesizer pads and conga drums or doubling up guitars on "Shepherd's Nite Watch." Surrender 2 Love is yet another culling of music from his early years with the Higher Octave label, and like most second "Best of" collections, it is, indeed, second-best. After all, he only recorded three albums for the label in the first place. But Surrender 2 Love is far from being Liebert's dregs, and even on a second pass, he stands six strings above most nouveau flamenco pretenders. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Another great album by the jazz guitar man.......2006-08-24

Ottmar leibert has a gift with those hands and the guitar he plays. This is album 2 and it has the same majic as his volume 1.
Get it and enjoy the great music he created.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar - an extention of his form.......2005-10-22

What a wonderful and diverse CD. Sit in front of a fire on a rainy day with a nice glass of Oregon Pinot Noir in your hand. Close your eyes relax and let the sounds of Liebert surround you. His talent is evident in the expressions as he's playing. The guitar seems an extension of his own form, not a separate instrument.

    5 out of 5 stars "a man, guitarist & a love of music".......2001-10-25

When you think of all the guitarist...past & present...this name should be in the top five ~ Ottmar Liebert...think six strings, tender touch and a style that has captured the world.

Liebert takes the moment, time seems to stand still with each track on this album...it's difficult to select one over the other, because they are not the same in substance, counter-balance or texture...his ability to take a melody, weave a fine tapestry...is what sets him above the rest.

Ottmar - you made me swoon at your Sacramento Concert. Love thoes bare feet! Love you. It pains me to say it but this is nothing compared to your other works and how the movements interplay with each other.

5 out of 5 stars TRIUMPH'S NEVER SURRENDER ALBUM PICKS UP WHERE ALLIED FORCES LEFT OFF........2007-04-29

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "NEVER SURRENDER" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of Canada's favorite sons and one of Toronto's pride and joy's, T-R-I-U-M-P-H! "NEVER SURRENDER" was originally released in 1983 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the MCA Records label. This legendary album would see its first print issue on Compact Disc in the mid 80's. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary masterpiece album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

TRIUMPH will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems ever. TRIUMPH will also be remembered for being one of the all-time greatest hard Rock trios / three-man bands ever. TRIUMPH would be formed and born in Toronto, Canada in 1975 comprising of vocalist/guitarist Rik Emmett, bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine and vocalist/drummer Gil Moore. With this new line-up, the stage would be set and TRIUMPH'S sole mission would not only be to set out to Rock and conquer their native country Canada, but to conquer the world. In 1982, at this point in the band's career, TRIUMPH was riding high and enjoying the many fruits and rewards that the good life had to offer. This all became possible due to the extreme success of the band's fifth and most recent album release that really struck gold and would forever put TRIUMPH on the Rock n' Roll map. The legendary masterpiece "ALLIED FORCES" album would be released in 1981 to highly critically acclaim and earn platinum status. All was well and going great in the TRIUMPH world and camp. With TRIUMPH riding high and living life on a happy note, the band was not about to rest on their laurels. The band felt that it would be the perfect time and opportunity to head back into the recording studio and record the new follow-up album to the extremely successful masterpiece "ALLIED FORCES" album. The band also realized the possibility that the new follow-up album may not top their legendary "ALLIED FORCES" album especially since they felt that "ALLIED FORCES" would be an extremely hard and difficult album to top. Which now brings me to the legendary album I'm about to review for all of you today. After a certain amount of time went by, TRIUMPH would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the completely finished acetate and would deliver the finished product to their record label and employer, MCA Records, Inc. MCA Records would soon release the product as the legendary masterpiece "NEVER SURRENDER" album in 1983. I truly feel that the "NEVER SURRENDER" album may not have topped the "ALLIED FORCES" album as the more superior ultimate album, but it was a great follow-up album in its own right that successfully picks up where "ALLIED FORCES" left off and should be compared as an equivalant to the "ALLIED FORCES" album. In my opinion, the "NEVER SURRENDER" album is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer fully crafted genius and musical creativity of three extremely talented individuals that truly knew how to get down and Rock. The "NEVER SURRENDER" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary three-man band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the hard Rockin' music of TRIUMPH to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece "NEVER SURRENDER" album, the band's sixth album release would begin with the a*s kicking hard Rocker "Too Much Thinking," the forever TRIUMPH trademark sound as evidently demonstrated here with the fast and beautiful mystical acoustic hard Rocker "A World Of Fantasy," the unbelievable forty-three second acoustic instrumental "A Minor Prelude," the merciless in your face hard Rocker "All The Way," the breathtaking hard Rocker with a message, "Battle Cry," the synthesized instrumental intro that also explodes into a hard Rocker, "Overture (Processional)," when the intro concludes, it would evolve into the forever TRIUMPH trademark sound as evidently demonstrated here with the groundbreaking hard Rocker with a personal message, "Never Surrender," the blistering a*s kicking hard Rocker "When The Lights Go Down," the incredibly powerful hard Rocker "Writing On The Wall" and the beautifully arranged instrumental featuring a magnificent guitar solo, "Epilogue." May I also add that the band was performing together in perfect harmony to their fullest potential at their highest level while laying down the tracks during the recording of this legendary album.

Overall, this is one great legendary masterpice album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard TRIUMPH fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the hard Rock music sound of TRIUMPH, the "NEVER SURRENDER" album along with the "ALLIED FORCES" album, may not be a bad place to start. However, you might want to research further into one of the many greatest hits compilation albums before you make your final decision as to which of the TRIUMPH album(s) is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own TRIUMPH music collection. You can do all of your researching and purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. Buy this album, you'll be glad that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this great legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, the "NEVER SURRENDER album would be released in 1983 to highly critically acclaim. TRIUMPH would soon after, embark on a new World Tour in what would prove to be one of the band's greatest tours yet to date. Following the extreme success of the "NEVER SURRENDER" album, TRIUMPH would move on and record many more great albums in the many upcoming years that were yet to come. With that in mind, there would also prove to be many more new tales and stories in the TRIUMPH legend and legacy that would need to be told. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. TRIUMPH will forever leave their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. Canada should be very proud of their band TRIUMPH. So here's to you Rik, Mike and Gil. Thanks for the great memories with hopefully many more still to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. TRIUMPH RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars CD as gift.......2007-02-13

Since I don't listen to this "genre" of music I cannot personally comment, but my daughter-in-law, whom it was for, is very pleased. One good thing I can say is that it was easy to find and I understand she had failed in a search without a computer.

5 out of 5 stars Stands with the alltime great hard rock albums.......2006-11-29

Triumph's Never Surerender is one of those sweet suprises that does not have a bad song all the way through and features three songs that rock right up there with anyone.

The first song "Too Much Thinking", just sizzles and gets you jacked up for the rest of the album.

"World of Fantasy" rates with any classic rock song of the era IMO.

"When the Lights Go Down" is another top hard rocking song.

I'm surprised these guys don't have more of a reputation cause all these songs are original, feature killer guitar work and loads of energy.

Those are the standouts for me, along with a cool ,bluesy, instrumental at the end "Epilogue", but every song is a good listen.

This is a great album, you'll be pleasantly suprised if you're just discovering these guys and you enjoy Van Halen and other hard rocking, guitar centric bands of the era.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply GREAT!.......2006-09-14

I could go on and on about the band or the CD. There is so much to say about both. I wish they had much more airplay here in the U.S., but even so, I must say that they are in the top 5 bands in my collection of over 1000 CD's. If you love really great rock, not just top 40 stuff, you must have Triumph in your collection and Never Surrender is a MUST HAVE!. Get it and enjoy real rock as it should be! You can not go wrong with this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to Allied Forces.......2005-12-02

Canadian power trio Triumph released their long awaited followup album to their 1981 Platinum seller Allied Forces entitled Never Surrender in the Spring of 1983.
Many fans were wondering when first buying this album if the album would be as good or better than its predecessor as the massive sales of Allied Forces made the band work hard to come up with a superb followup to their Allied Forces album.
I go with the former as did many fans who helped push the album to #26 on the Billboard album chart and Gold status here in the States.
Never Surrender picked up where its predecessor left off.
The album features some of the band's best tracks like singer/guitarist Rik Emmett's massive hit single "A World of Fantasy" and the superb six and a half minute title cut.
Singer/drummer Gil Moore's best vocal performance on this album is on the hard rocker "When the Lights Go Down" which (at first) sounds like an acoustic blues song at first before rocking out.
Other standouts are the opening "Too Much Thinking" (which had samples of the late great President Ronald Reagan at the intro of the track), the rock radio hit "All the Way" and of course Moore's hard rocker "Battle Cry".
The three instrumentals (the classical guitar intro "A Minor Prelude", the powerful second half starter "Overture (Procession)" and the closing electric guitar and classical guitar solo piece "Epilogue (Resolution)") and the rocking "Writing on the Wall" are also great songs as well.
Despite the success of Never Surrender, RCA picked a fight with Triumph and the band fled the label after this album and signed to MCA which was run by Eagles manager Irving Azoff at the time and switched the ownership of the band's music from RCA to MCA (Azoff paid RCA for the band's master tapes and would eventually revert the rights over to Triumph) and then in 1995 to Triumph's own label TRC (now known as TML whom re-mastered the album and re-released it in 2004).
Rock bands should not be on RCA as they tended to be cheated and mistreated(Styx, Triumph, The Kinks and David Bowie).
    Highly recommended!

    4 out of 5 stars OK.......2005-03-17

Good CD, especially if you're a fan of Mark O'Conner. I have to admit that a couple of the tracks seem rather directionless (in a Vaughn Williams sort of way) and I tend to lose interest, but other tracks are fun, even exciting. The production is excellent throughout.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2004-02-27

I watched the documentary and heard Mark O'Connor play this piece in a concert and loved it immediately. The music is great to help the battles come alive but great for just listening to anyway.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUNDTRACK!.......2003-07-04

Fine CD full of great pieces of music from a great miniseries! Full of patriotism! I highly recommend it! Grade: A+

5 out of 5 stars Finest Music Ever Heard.......2002-03-27

I heard this music on the excellent P B S Documentary: "Liberty - the American Revolution" and I knew I had to have it! It is the finest music I have heard, capturing the heart and soul of the American Revolution. The documentary "Liberty" was a masterpiece that was beautiful and moving. So too this music with its most wonderful arrangements and accompaniment. I love it! I could hardly wait to get it in the mail. It framed the documentary (which I also bought) like a great frame compliments a beautiful canvas painting. Superlatives fail me. This music must be experienced by first watching the great series on the American Revolution and then by listening to it apart. This is some of the most wonderful music I have ever heard. It reminds me of the genius of Aaron Copland who wrote the Applachian Spring and Rodeo suites.

    5 out of 5 stars Stirring Americana.......2001-11-10

This CD stands on its own merits as good music, not simply as music for a TV show. It evokes images of America old and new. O'Connor's violin carries us from the dance hall to the battlefield to the sorrow of lover's lost. Simple melodies twist and turn, rising up from their solid American roots. James Taylor's solemn rendition of "Johnny's Gone for a Soldier"is as true a telling of the grief of the soldier lost to war today as it was hundreds of years ago. Sit in a comfortable chair in the warm light of evening and let it surround you. To know where we have come from offers hope that the magic of freedom and liberty will not desert us in these troubled times.

Kut Klose members LaVonn Battle, Athena Cage, and Tabitha Duncan have attractive voices, but they haven't come up with a distinctive group sound; they simply fill in around the lead vocals in the most predictable ways. It doesn't help matters that the album's 11 songs, largely written by Keith Sweat and his sidekicks, are undernourished melodically, giving the three women little to do but repeat the same sing-song rhythms over and over. If Surrender were simply boring, it could be easily dismissed. It's more insidious than that, however, for Sweat and his male cronies have used the three women of Kut Klose as vehicles for their own sexual fantasies. There's something smarmy about powerful industry figures who sign up young women desperate for stardom and who then direct those women to moan and croon about how they want a "Lovely Thang" who will "Lay My Body Down" and "Do Me" the way "I Like." Kut Klose's new album is nothing more than the Penthouse "Forum" set to formulaic slow jams. --Geoffrey Himes

Too bad this group supported by Keith Sweat didn't go any further. I bought it for one song, but the whole CD is great for listening. Lyrics contain songs about love and such, and I like they way speak about it. It gives you something to look forward to.

I'm listening to it now at work and it feels just like it did my senior year of high school when this album dropped. Incidentally, Tabitha Duncan went to my high school ... but a few years before me (I'm not that old).

At any rate, I actually kinda miss that 1990s R&B sound ... smooth, cool, slow, laid back slow jams. "I Like" will take you back or catch you up if you a new jack not up on what's a dying breed of old school R&B soul.

Classic, classic track, indistinctive album by a group that jumped on the bandwagon after En Vogue and TLC blew up.

Kut Klose is one of those her today gone tomorrow artists. Yes they had a hit single "I Like" but the bad thing about it is that the song itself is very typical cookie cutter music and doesnt hold up as being remembered. I think Keith Sweat produced their album and most of the material here sound like his leftovers he gave to them. This group is nothing special vocally or lyrically. They have absolutely nothing to fall back on besides Keith Sweat who produced a bunch of average songs for them talking about the samething. There were so many 1 hit wonders around this time. All these record labels kept pushing out all these average singers that didnt standout from anyone else. Kut Klose vanished faster then they came and nobody cares.
