Violinist Regina Carter's able to cover ample stylistic terrain without any sense of a tourist's itinerary. Her signature excursions on Rhythms of the Heart reveal a jaunty joie de vivre reminiscent of Stephane Grappelli, best showcased on "Lady Be Good" and Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight." But there are also credible forays into salsa with "Mojito," Afro-pop with "Mandingo Street" (featuring Cameroonian multi-instrumentalist and composer Richard Bona), and soulful reggae on a cover of the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," where vocalist Cassandra Wilson provides her trademark hushed refinement. A longtime sidewoman for trombonist Steve Turre and others, Carter proves adept at fostering ideal forums for her cohorts, particularly pianist Kenny Barron, whose tune "Cook's Bay" is a pastoral gem, and whose exchanges with Carter on "N.Y. Attitude" ensure that's there's a graceful depth to the song's brisk efficiency. Finally, don't overlook the pensive beauty of Carter's take on the ballad "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most." --Britt Robson
From Jazziz
Cassandra Wilson's influence is spreading. And while it might be difficult to imitate her vocal style, musicians of all sorts are learning that jazz artists can afford to be eclectic without sacrificing the strength and unity of their own voices. Regina Carter, the terrific young violinist, opens and closes her new disc with standard-issue stuff: a swinging romp through "Oh, Lady, Be Good!" and a sexy slide across "Skeeter's Blues." But between tracks one and 10, there are a lot of nice surprises, including a delicious guest appearance by Ms. Wilson singing "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." Just try keeping your finger off the repeat button after that tune.
Carter has tools, make no mistake. Her tone is deeply textured, and her fingers fly. Her pitch is perfect. She also knows how to deliver a melody so that you can hear the song's words in your mind, understand their message, and gain a sense of how they make her feel. In Carter's hands, "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" is terribly sad, and not just because the tempo is slow. the power is in her sound. Lewis Nash stands out on drums, and Kenny Barron turns in four tasty piano tracks. Acoustic guitarist Romero Lubambo performs an exquisite duet with Carter on "By the Brook."
But the best thing about this CD is Carter's sense of adventure. One gets the idea that she feels not at all confined by the violin, although it is surely one of the stepchildren of the jazz family. She can play the violin like a horn or she can use it to gain the effect of a full string section. At times, she sounds thoroughly modern; at others, like she's happily dipping into the swing era. In fact, Carter dips into so many different eras and styles that she defies simple categorization. There's '70s-style funk, bouncy Latin grooves, and a cool African percussion section. After two or three listens, you don't think of this as violin music. It's hip music. And it's Regina Carter's very own.

Vaughan Williams --- off the beaten path.......2006-05-16
This ample collection demonstrates that Richard Hickox has to be considered one the leading Vaughan Williams interpreters in the post-Boult world, as he puts forth sparkling performances of many little-known works, including the Concerto accademico and the film music "49th Parallel," among others. Quite a number of these compositions are rarely recorded, if ever; it is quite nice to see them in a very affordable collection such as this.
Like another reviewer, I find the affected style of Stephen Roberts to be distracting & annoying. Also, the orchestral version of the Serenade to Music is a pale imitation of the original version...if you have heard Boult's recording, you will understand that the original version is far superior. It is a shame that it wasn't included here.
These are mere quibbles, however. For a dirt-cheap price, you have the opportunity to fill in the gaps of your Vaughan Williams collection. There is no good reason to pass on this. If you stumble across these CDs (I found mine at BestBuy of all places), grab it.
Hickox Conducts Vaughan Williams.......2000-09-05
This is a most-welcome CD release, especially since it contains a number of pieces not available on CD until now. It's also excellent value--two discs for the price of one.
Of particular interest is the curious ballet Old King Cole, written for an outdoor performance at Trinity College, Cambridge. Essentially a light-hearted piece, the music is not of the highest level of inspiration overall, but there are moments of real beauty that make up for any shortcomings in the score. For the convinced Vaughan Williams admirer, this is a must-have (RVW himself recorded some of this music; this early mono recording has been released on CD by Pearl records.)
Other items of similar interest include the Prelude On An Old Carol Tune, written for a BBC radio play, and a pair of hard-to-find marches. The instrumental version of the Serenade to Music is a gorgeous novelty, but no substitute for the original version for 16 vocalists and orchestra.
Also included are two important concertos; one for oboe and one for violin, both with string accompaniment. The violin concerto receives the better performance. The rendering of the oboe concerto suffers from too-slow tempi, particularly in the final movement. Neither are major works, but are nonetheless full of interest and deserve to be better known.
Some well-known RVW works are included, among them The Lark Ascending and Five Mystical Songs. The latter is marred by the soloist's excessive tendency to roll his r's--an almost comical sound sometimes. RVW was known to have disliked this sort of affectation.
Overall a valuable collection for anyone interested in this composer. The recordings were made in the 1980s.

Wonderful.......2005-06-04
"Rhytthms of the Heart" is decidedly jazzier than Carter's first and second CD's. This is more evident towards the end with "New York Attitude," "By the Brook" and "Skeeter Blues." There are also some pleasant surprises as in "Mojito," a very latin, carribean inspired number. The mixture of percussion by Richard Bona and Carter's violin lends a breezy, delightful salsa tune, that invites you to relax and dance a little.
This CD also marks the appearnce of Kenny Baron, what an awesome treat! His piano really kicks it up a notch. And for all of you Cassandra Wilson fans out there, she makes a brooding appearance on track #3 "Papa was a rolling stone." I didn't care too much for "Mandingo Street." It seemed a tad too experimental and belonged in another CD, but fall in love with track #6, "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most." It 's a quite, romantic piece with Baron's translucent piano and Carter's weepy violin. It inspires complete amore, even if you're devoid of any amorous proclivities. Trust me.
I do have to give this a 4 star rating only because it isn't as brillaint as the previous two but nevertheless, it's worth owning.
blah.......2000-09-21
Actually 2 and 1/2 stars. I agree with two of the reviewers below that Ms. Carter is better in concert than on this record, but I seem to be more disappointed than they with the difference. Her playing here is restrained, simplistic, detached, unemotional. Her violin's tone sounds boxy. There is a profusion of "guest stars" here and no sense of a band cohering. (Her real pianist is better than Kenny Barron.) I could go on, but I think you get the idea: this is a commercially compromised, timid, halting, uninspired effort.
I can only recommend you see the real Regina Carter in concert, and in the mean time pick up these two jazz records featuring violin: The Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds of Fire" and Shakti's "Natural Elements".
WOW!.......2000-07-08
This album is truly mind-blowing! I saw Regina live in concert last night (Thursday 6th July), and also was involved in a masterclass run by her on Wednesday as part of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland Summer course. What an inspiration! If you ever get the chance to see her live, please do, because if you think the album is fabulous (which it is), you will be truly mesmorised by her playing and the general atmosphere at one of her gigs!
This album is just plain awesome.......1999-09-23
I would highly recommend this album to anyone who loves jazz. The violin is great as are the accompaning instruments. You will not regret buying this album. The best violin album I've heard.
One of the great musicians of our time.......1999-08-31
In live performance, Regina Carter is one of the great musicians of our time, and one of the greatest jazz soloists of all time on any instrument. That monumental impact is not really captured fully on this disc, but it is fairly common in jazz that it would not be. This is an excellent disc, which reveals her beauty of tone, swinging approach, and compelling ideas. This is one of the best jazz violin albums of all time, and I look forward to listening to her for years to come. REGINA RULES!!!!

Customer Reviews:
A fine collection, well recorded, & a bargain, to boot!.......2005-10-08
This collection of pieces is a real treat for RVW fans. The recordings of Flos campi (surely one of RVW's most unusual and mystical works, somehow managing to capture the elusive emotional/spiritual environment of the Song of Solomon) and the Suite for Viola and Orchestra (rarely recorded, but a delectable mixing of folk-song, Bach, Bartok-like passages, and rich, resonant melodies redolent of autumn) would be enough in themselves. Couple them with the Six Studies in English Folksong for clarinet & piano (a rare piece of Vaughn Williams chamber music) and the ravishing instrumental version of Serenade to Music, and you have a truly admirable set. This is an assemblage of a number of earlier recordings: in this case, I think, the cream has been skimmed and put into one convenient two-disc collection. The recorded sound is good throughout, and the notes well-written and interesting - an excellent Chandos release.
Perfect and otherworldly.......2003-10-06
I am a rock musician but I must say that there is little other music on this green earth that is as gorgeous as that of Vaughan Williams. Some folk and country airs can touch the melancholy that VW can, some of Bach's or Ravel's pieces maybe. But when I hear music like Flos Campi 2nd and 6th movements, or the beautiful short pieces that comprise Six Studies in English Folk Song ... well, they leave me breathless. Parts of Flos Campi sounds like VW has distilled all the tinsel and magic, childlike wonder and true peace of something as hard to define as Christmas and made it into music. Serenade to Music in it's pure orchestral form still remains a glorius composition, even without the vocalists. My, when it hits that early theme in the latter part with full force and orchestra ... And the lovely Linden Lea and that wonderful Suite ... Almost too much. I sometimes program this and some of his major works, such as Tallis, Dives and Lazarus and The Lark Ascending (when I have some time to spare!): it's a big 'wow' factor. VW's music is unashamedly beautiful, capturing the sweetest folk elements and conjuring up the spirit of the wildest and most remote parts of Britain (in my head at least). This music is something else and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Album Description
Popular percussionist Girish is blasting through the defining boundaries of the chant music genre, bringing a fresh, exciting, and yet deeply spiritual interpretation that is sure to change the way that audiences and performers think of chant music. You may readily recognize the familiar sound of Girish's tabla playing, which has consistently graced popular chant recordings for the last decade. Now Girish is revolutionizing the world of chants with his funky, stirring style. On his new CD, Reveal, he intelligently incorporates pop, jazz, and folk nuances into ancient Sanskrit mantras. His voice is well trained through years of studying Sanskrit and chanting for hours a day, year after year. "I took mantras that are ten thousand years old and combined them with a musical style that makes the benefit of the mantras accessible and appealing to modern listeners," says Girish. But rather than translating the mantras, he kept the integrity of the Sanskrit sounds intact for a reason. "When you chant, the mantra acts as a portal to the presence of the deity whose name you're chanting. There's this whole energy field built up around a mantra that has been used for thousands of years and has this vortex of spiritual power built around it," he explains. A remarkable cast of performers participated in and supported the making of Reveal. These include top female vocalists Donna De Lory, Wah!, CC White and Snatam Kaur. Saxophone, keyboards, electric sitar and cello add tremendous texture and flavor. But most impressive is Girish's effort in conceptualizing, writing for, singing on, and performing multiple instruments throughout the recording. Though it is deeply rooted in the wisdom and spiritual knowledge of the Vedas, listening to Reveal is fun and light-hearted

Girish redefines mantra. Donna De Lory's backing vocals are just stunning!
WOW!!!.......2005-04-15
I'm new to some of eastern influenced music. I've worked in the music business for many years with rock and pop artists, but I wanted to expand my horizons. Until I came across this Girish CD, my favorites have been Dave Stringer, Krishna Das, and David Parson. My new favorite of the genre is Reveal. The entire album is amazing. I especially can't stop listening to Hanuman.
I highly recommend this CD. I'm looking forward to seeing what Girish does in the future too!!!
EXTRA-ORDINARY!.......2005-01-19
Upon first listening to REVEAL, I found myself intoxicated by ancient sounds woven together by the modern hands of an artist who truly understands the soul's desire to experience something deeply transcendent. Strong, earthy tones permeate mantras often thought inaccessible are now open to many in this cross-culturally infused album. Girish's languid voice takes us on a journey where inspiring, heart-felt expression is mixed with a groove all its own. These subtle, jazz-like compositions set REVEAL apart from other chant albums, allowing those who may not usually swim in these waters a chance to dive in and feel immediately at home.
To create an album with a unique sound, both vocally and instrumentally, is rare. To uplift and heal the spirit as well is...extraordinary!
A Wonderful CD.......2004-11-09
"Reveal" by Girish is a CD of articulate beauty, accessible devotion and amazing musicianship. Girish weaves ancient Sanskrit mantras with contemporary and inventive melodies to bring chant out of the ashram and into the living room.
I love this CD. I'm instantly enveloped by Girish's hypnotic vocals and lush arrangements every time I listen to it. His voice is deep and fluid, expressing the emotional calling of Kirtan through melodies that you come away singing. Yes, I find myself singing in Sanskrit, understanding the meaning even if I don't know what the words themselves mean, being connected to an ancient intelligence on a visceral level.
Gorgeous!.......2004-10-17
Girish's beautiful sound is overlain with a palpable sense of devotion that speaks to a place deep inside. When friends are over and I play it, it never goes unremarked, and this is true whether or not they are from a Hindu tradition. It's one of my absolute favorite cds.

Rara has a great voice and his music is an interesting blend of arrangements. Some songs have a fast tempo, and others are perfect for relaxing. Album Description
An East/West caravan of interwoven melodies and exotic rhythms carries the timeless and ecstatic words of the Mystic poets, Rumi, Lalla, Ghalib, and the artist's namesake, 15th century Hindu poetess, Mirabai. In the company of world-class musicians, including Glen Velez, Steve Gorn, Eddie Daniels, and Bruce Dunlap; Mirabai's compositions are unique, yet familiar, blending the complexity of Western harmony with the lean melodic and rhythmic beauty of the Indian and Middle Eastern traditions.

I have had quiet ears running down my cheeks on my way to.......2004-05-05
work listening to "this we are now". What a wonderful feeling this is. Melt down and openning of the heart.
A dear friend taught us this song on our pilgrimage in the Sahara desert but listening to it in all its glory with the womens' multilayered voices, strong and ecstatic, brought tears to my eyes. I do not exaggerate, I was ready to die that moment. It was perfect.
All the songs are truly inspired and I'd like to meet the creator of such emotions. Thank you Mirabai!
Stirring songs of Rumi.......2004-01-07
I recieved this CD as a gift and I have given it as a gift to several friends....all of whom have thanked me repeatedly. I am always inspired and uplifted when I listen to this CD. Mirabai's voice has a quality of depth and heart that I haven't heard in a while. Usually I am disappointed when I have heard people singing the words of Rumi...not so here..."This Love" truly captures the quality of the Sufi master in a very stunning combination of eastern music with elements of folk and jazz. I highly recommend it.
Gypsy Jazz.......2003-05-27
I have loved being awakened by Mirabai's music. With just the right mix of world music, jazz and folk, this CD has all the ingredients to make me dance, soothe my heart, and inspire my spirit. Mirabai has a unique and stirring voice, and her musical settings of some of the world's most beautiful mystical poetry deepen and enhance this poetry like no others I have heard. Many of my friends have thanked me for gifting them with this exciting and healing music. I whole-heartedly encourage people to listen to this CD.
Powerful, soulful music.......2002-08-27
This inspired and beautiful CD has a mesmerizing and trascendent quality, consistent with Rumi's writings. There is an immediacy to Mirabai's singing that is both palpable and stirring. She digs way down deep to draw out what she does. I find myself playing it over and over, hearing new elements each time in her delivery and in the jazzy, percussive music played by outstanding artists.
A Divine Note.......2002-08-04
If I want to start my day on a divine note, I cue up Santa Fe singer Mirabai's This Love.
Her renditions of the mystic poets tune me up and propell me between the crack of the daily and into the territory of Rumi,Ghalib, Lalla, and Mirabai, this singer's namesake. Her musical lineage, trained in both eastern and western tradtition, brings us the intimacy of a jazz club, the mystery of inside the tend, and the professionalism of the large stage, creating a genre all her own.
This music is in the key of awe and can serve as background or foreground, if you flow with the sound or listen to the words.

Great for a Yoga practice.......2006-01-29
I'm a Yoga teacher always in search of new music for my classes. I had seen this CD during my training and decided to give it a try. It's appropriately upbeat and at the same time a lovely spin on Kirtan. I totally recommend it for those practitioners who practice a Vinyasa-Flow style of yoga.
Love this album.......2005-09-21
owned this album for a couple years now. played it for a friend and he loved it so much i wound up getting him a copy. another friend has a copy and loved it. it has become an album that is around many in my circles. saw them perform live at a yoga conference in new york. apparently they have done some yoga cruises as well and gotten some good appreciation by the audience. certainly a quality experience, and a good expansion on the more traditional sounds of krishna das, who i also love. great stuff for blending the delight of hindu chants with fusion music. kundalini ma with the reggae beat is one i find a certain humor as well as just sheer delight in the sounds. 'om namo bhagavate vasudevaya' has a great devotional quality to it, and was one of the main mantras practiced by followers of kripalu yoga, a lineage i am particularly fond of. i have heard other audio versions of that song, but the vocals on this have a deeper quality to them, and also a male vocal, which i like in contrast to the female version on another artists album (i forget the name of that artist).
even as i write this review i get fond memories of listening to the album in cars, apartments of friends. great album for those seeking something a little different.
Uplifting chants.......2002-07-31
This is an uplifting selection of classic chants sung creatively and expressively with current-day music. Excellent for beginners, the CD jacket includes explanations of the meanings of the chants. Uplifting for seasoned chanters, the updated music reawakens and inspires the true meaning of the chants.
Your Heart in Music.......2002-03-06
This is an amazing CD. It reflects the heart in all of its moods, but most of all in its purity and gives you freedom to express your own heart as you sing or dance along. From the upbeat and even funny reggae style of "Kundalini Ma" to the hypnotic and haunting "O Divine Mother" the music and lyrics are a joy that linger and stay with you - - you'll find yourself humming as you walk down the street. It's a wonderful CD to just listen to or to enhance, accompany and explore your yoga practice. Best of all, it's a sweet introduction to bhakti and chanting for those who've been curious but hesitate - - and a new spin for bhaktinis everywhere. JAI!
Glorious Music.......2002-02-07
Having listened to a large assortment of eastern inspired music throughout the years it was a delight to play the Shakti Fusion CD. I've heard them in person and loved them. What a surprise to find the tape was even better! The production is superb, the chanting uplifting, the music soothing and awakening. I ended up buying one for my office, one for my car, and one for my homem and one for each of my friends and family!!!

Customer Reviews:
Music you can sink into.......2005-07-14
I bought this CD last year and didn't give it the listen it deserved ... I've recently returned to it and highly recommend it. Snowy is a kind of dark and shimmery mutation of Portishead, Lisa Germano and Mazzy Star (and yet totally unique). On first listen many of the songs sound similar ... give this a try a few times to really let it sink in. The music manages to be both subtle and majestic ... the songs that stick in my head the most are "Three a.m." and "Candlenight." I love the cover art as well. If you like sad, dark, gothic, but hopeful (and not too hardcore) you will get into this.
Emotional and Poetic.......2003-08-28
I am a big fan of Aimee Mann and a friend of mine recommended I try this CD.
I quickly fell in love with this CD and, lately, I am listening to this CD in addition to Aimee Mann's "Lost in Space" (another nice album).
Snowy's songs are filled with emotion, poetic lyrics and "ghostly vocals".
My favorites are: Lilywhite, Let it Go and Surf Song.

Snowy: Elegant and Etherial Dreamscapes.......2002-08-23
Combine the soft, breathy delivery and etherial moods of Julee Cruise with the hip, jazzy beats of Morcheeba and the production sensibilities of George Martin (in the the psychedelic era) or, perhaps more appropriately, the mid-career production and arrangements of the Cocteau Twins and you begin to get a sense of the musical territories covered by Snowy on this lush and beautiful debut recording. This is a sparse, subtle recording in which almost every part is clear and foregrounded in the mix; consequently, few parts are lost in a wash of sound. Instead, the well-crafted songs, Evenson's compelling, upfront vocals and melodies, and a variety of interesting ambient textures claim their own spaces within this ambitious and self-restrained group of songs. I would highly recommend Lilywhite to fans of the aforementioned bands as well as fans of other 4 A.D. bands and folks drawn to well-conceived, modern ambient music and subtle psychedelic projects. This is definitely music for low-key and contemplative moods and, thus, it is not for everyone or for every occasion.

From luscious, resonant and moody to retro-James-Bond soundtrack-- this cd has variety and range but is always cooool.

East & West Do Meet.......2003-06-26
This album is everything they say it is! With artists like, Chloe Goodchild, Bhagavan Das, Deva Premal, Jai Uttal, Gabrielle Roth, Boris Grebenshikov, DJ Cheb I Sabbah and Survana, how can it not be ... you have artists from different genres, background and traditions with one main focus, The Essence of Feminine Spirituality.
I don't know what I like more (or even if I can like one more than the other), the beats or the vocals. Deeply hypnotic and passionate.... I highly recommend this album.
