Following the example of soulful peers such as Curtis Mayfield and Les McCann, Grover Washington Jr. used Live at the Bijou's concert setting to elaborate upon the grooves that fuel his repertoire and to showcase the talent of his supporting cast. The three-piece rhythm section is in particularly fine fettle, mostly eschewing the fluidity of jazz in favor of sassy, rollicking funk that climaxes near the end of the disc with "Sausalito" (featuring percussionist Leonard Gibbs) and "Funkfoot." Flautist Leslie Burrs grabs center stage with a long, Washington-esque solo on "Days in Our Lives," and keyboardist James Simmons and violinist John Blake also have their signature moments. But the spotlight inevitably returns to Washington. Performing at the age of 34 at a neighborhood club in his native Philadelphia, the saxophonist is in prime form, tearing through "Mr. Magic" on tenor and prancing over "You Make Me Dance" with a fleet-fingered soprano solo. All told, Live at the Bijou ranks just behind Inner City Blues, Mister Magic, and Winelight as an essential part of his voluminous catalog. --Britt Robson

Grover at his BEST.......2007-05-26
If you like jazz and like GWJ, you will need this album for your collection.
Live At The Bijou,Something You Really Want To Hear.......2007-05-16
Ladies and gentleman, presenting GROVER WASHINGTON JR. backed up by the funky rhythms of the band Locksmith for one of THE definative live albums in all of jazz/funk,maybe ever?Anyway with the exception of the exceptionally funky 20 minute live medley of "Days In Our Lives/Mr.Magic" everything on this album is previously unreleased live versions of songs from a solo album Grover never released. And about that FUNKY MUSIC it is,filled with celebratory soul and rhythms straight out of the "united funk" era."Lock It In The Pocket" is one of the finest slices of funk Grover has ever put to wax and just keeps you begging and begging for more. This tremendously grooving concert is also tempered by the inclusion of of two lighter tunes, the tranquil "You Make Me Dance" and "Summer Song",the only vocal tune here that's a happy-go-lucky romp down the funky soul path that will peak the interest of fans of people like The Blackbyrds and Stevie Wonder. On "Jeffere" and "Sausalito" the whole band gets into jazzier relms of the funk whereas "Funkfoot" is almost overwelming in it's density. There is one critically important thing about this recording;this came before the mellower sentiments of Winelight and Come Morning, back during a time where Grover was BLOWING heft funk-jazz on his sax.And especially here he does it with tons of passion and zeal to spare;the band are HOTTER then they come but Grover's solos truely get your attention upfront. So if your not big into the sound of a saxaphone, this is probably not the album for you.But for those who love that AND love to groove 'Live At The Bijou' is a wonderful treat,a classic to be enjoyed by all those who partake!
Live at the Bijou.......2006-08-23
I say that this particular Album is very dear to me, After listening to the cd that replaced an eight track tape, I am very happy.
Hard to believe it's a live album and not a studio session!.......2005-12-30
This album is unreal. If you thought Grover's earlier hit albums such as "Feels So Good" or "Mister Magic" were hot smooth and funky, you haven't heard ANYTHING yet!
From what I understand, the songs performed on this album were just that - performed exclusively and only available on this live set. If these are tunes that Grover intended to record but never did, he made a terrible mistake.
There isn't anything I can't say here really about this album that no one else has said except for the fact that this album is a slept on sampleable piece of music. For instance, we all know how "Hydra" was sampled extensively by everyone from Black Moon to A Tribe Called Quest, and let's not even go into the sampling of "Mister Magic"...but suprisingly, the only tune off this album that was sampled by anyone was "Lock It in the Pocket" by Gangstarr on "Words from the Nutcracker" (the joint with the Group Home cat on it) and "Flip the Script". I think Das Efx may have also sampled the same tune, but I'm not positive.
Either way, this album is a must have for Hip-Hop heads, producers and b-boys worldwide. It's relatively untapped and not a very popular album, so when you flip the beat in your sampler, it will be fresh! Regardless, buy this album. If you ain't feelin it, I ain't feelin you!
excellent.......2004-07-20
The funkiest, tightest and most energetic live jazz album that I've ever heard. This will have fans of any kind of music groovin'. Check this one out, you will not be disappointed.

Ron from Tarzana.......2006-06-27
Jesse Winchester is a great artist, and for his part, this is a great album. Unfortunately, the company reissuing this and other Winchester albums, Wounded Bird Records, did a horrible job of remastering it. The sound is much too bassy and flat, with virtually no treble at all. It needs to be run through an equalizer to listen to it. The CD deserves 5 stars for Winchester's part, and 1 for Wounded Bird's part, which is why I gave it only 3. I've emailed Jesse about it and he says: "I'm afraid I have no control and no influence over the companies who release those records. I was not consulted or even informed by Wounded Bird. I haven't the money for a law suit....I'm very sorry about this. I wish there were something concrete I could do, but due to my own naivite as a young man and the unscruplous people I was doing business with, I have no artistic or financial control whatever over those recordings. We live and learn."

Yankee Lady Verifies Vermont Tradition.......2000-09-03
We are good ladies in Vermont - I can relate because I like to make homemade bread and make my man feel good...as long as the feeling is mutual. Jesse got to me in the 70's with "Yankee Lady." That's when I learned to play guitar and Yankee Lady was the first song I learned. It makes me feel good. Thanks Jesse. Patty from Vermont.
