5 out of 5 stars Great Live Collection.......2007-06-06

I picked this CD up from Starbuck's the other day because I noticed there was a Previously Undreleased live version of No Woman, No Cry. I proceeded to listen to the album on the ride home the next day. The great thing about Marley and the Wailers is one song can be listened to with excitement, and the same song can later serve as a lullaby at a later time. With over half of the tracks Previously Unreleased, I highly recommend this to any Marley fan - casual or fanatic.

The disc is comprised of 13 live recordings from five shows performed between 1973 and 1975. I'll go ahead and list basic information from the booklet since Amazon currently lacks in that department for this particular release. Note: According to the booklet, Peter Tosh is featured on the first nine tracks.

On the opposite side of the digipack cover is a quote that sums up any Bob Marley live recording: "The beauty of Marley's music is that while it holds a special significance for the sufferers of the world, it speaks to any listener with an open heart ... The rhythms are as close as your heartbeat, the voice speaks a language the spirit understands. And yes, when it hits, you feel no pain." - Robert Palmer, RollingStone, 1994

    Album Description

"The jams on Stompin' Room Only are some of the best ever recorded by the band." —From the liner notes by Michael Buffalo Smith, editor of Gritz magazine

The Marshall Tucker Band, acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of the Southern rock movement, is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a recording group with a catalog restoration and release program. Stompin' Room Only, part of this collection, is the long rumored and highly anticipated album of live material recorded between 1974 and 1976.

Recorded in London, Manchester (during their only European tour), in Milwaukee, and at Charlie Daniels' annual "Volunteer Jam" in Murfreesboro during the years 1974-1976, the album was originally prepared for release in 1977 by producer Paul Hornsby and included the original lineup.

In an unusual series of events, the album's release was first delayed by Capricorn Records and, ultimately, never released, as the master tapes could not be found for more than a quarter century. They were recently discovered in pristine condition and that long-awaited album, the virtual "holy grail" of jam band music is now available.

5 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01

The Original Marshall Tucker Band captured in a quality live recording and wonderfully packaged with coinciding notes and photos. This is an instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome live performance!.......2007-01-17

Ever since I first heard this album, I just haven't gotten enough of it. I bought it about half a year ago, and it still hasn't grown old a bit. MTB puts on a splendid performance, and Toy's thumb shines through in every track. This is one for the ages!

    5 out of 5 stars MTB AMAZING.......2006-07-16

This release from the Marshall Tucker Band vault leaves me
not only stompin, but happy, and bit annoyed great music like this sat on the shelf for so long.
Besides all the great hits the MTB is known for this disc showcases what a fine ensamble band they were.
If you love the Allmans at the Fillmore East and Little Feats Waiting for Columbus then this release by the Marshall Tucker band is a must have.
Every time I play it the experiance leaves amazed and wanting more!!

    4 out of 5 stars A Rare Find.......2006-04-26

When I first heard about this album being released, I was thrilled at the prospect of a Marshall Tucker live album with the classic line-up. Although the production is less than perfect in spots, this is certainly a great live album.

Marshall Tucker was a great band, with some fine musicians and some truly great music. Seeing the band live here, with some of their classic songs (although with some unfortunate omissions, such as "Heard it in a Love Song") makes it well worth the cost of admission.

    5 out of 5 stars Southern Rock's Holy Grail.......2006-04-03

I waited a year to review this disc because, for me, the Marshall Tucker Band's songs are timeless. My all-time favorite album is MTB's Where We All Belong, (followed very closely by ABB's Filmore East). I've listened to Where We All Belong consistently, since I received it for Christmas in 1974. I figured that if the live versions on Stompin' sounded as good after a year as they did when I first spinned it, then I could write a review.

I was a fool. Of course they'd sound as good after a year...THIS IS LIVE TUCKER AFTER ALL! Now I know that some here were disappointed that some of the tunes had already appeared on other releases. That didn't disappoint me, (probably because I knew about it before buying it - thanks to those of you who complained). But hearing the MTB deliver their "stompin'" set to what had to be a stunned crowd of Brits is incredible! The versions of Long Hard Ride, This Ol' Cowboy, Can't You See, Searchin' For A Rainbow, and Hillbilly Band, will astound any Tucker Fan. The cover should contain the warning: "WARNING: Listening to this disc while driving causes sudden outbursts of air-drumming and air-guitar. Please pull over before Toy Caldwell's solo on This Ol' Cowboy."

If you're an MTB fan and you've got any trepidation about purchasing this release, let it go. This disc will surely occupy your player for a good long time.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A few highlights...and one awful song........2007-03-19

I recently purchased this CD at a used book store for a few dollars. I bought it to hear Bonnie Raitt sing James Taylor's "Rainy Day Man". I'm usually not a Bonnie Raitt fan, but she does a good job on the song. Coldplay's "Clocks" and Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind" are also highlights. The first three songs are the best on the entire CD. Unfortunately, the flow of the compilation is destroyed when Raul Midon shows up and proceeds to sing a horrible song called "Everybody". It features lyrics that would fit in well on an episode of Sesame Street. It's embarrassing.

The rest of the CD was very odd for me. I usually love Tori Amos and hate Phil Collins, but I found myself wanting to forward through Tori's song and replay Phil's. Tori's contribution to the CD is worth hearing once or twice, but it's not one of her stronger efforts. I actually liked the Phil Collins song a lot more. I can't explain or understand it. The rest of the CD is hit-or-miss. I could do without the Joan Baez and Bruce Hornsby songs, but the Tracy Chapman and Cyndi Lauper songs are both surprisingly good. The CD ends well with Robert Plant wailing through Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love".

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Sizzles.......2006-08-16

If Miles Davis - during his electric phase - had the baddest rock band, then Weather Report arguably could be the last rock band.

Rarely are compilation packages worth taking a second glance. But this double CD set - encompassing the years 1975 to 1983, with Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinful as the permanent members - is timeless in the compositions and performances.

The CD is an absolute must for fans fortunate enough to see the band live or for those who want a front row seat to music that (re)defined the fusion moniker.

      5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-06-30

Yeah, great performances by great band(s)!
There's something I'd like to say about Jaco:
It's not that the other bass players on WR are not good or anything of the kind (on the contrary, they`re excellent, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to play with this band).
It's just that Jaco was an outliner, not just a gifted bass player, but a true musical genious.
I know this word has been misused many times, but, IMHO, his choice of notes, his sense of rithm, his notion of chords and creativity are (were) beyond the range of the wide majority of the best instrumentists.
If you think that what he was all about was "beeing all over" the songs, I think you're just missing his deep and surprising musicianship.

This is a highly recommended CD from a great band that once had an extraordinary musician on it.
      enjoy

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-09-11

This CD is agreat retrospective of arguably the best fusion band of all time.It provides a great sample of their material.

5 out of 5 stars Still Relevant After All These Years.......2005-04-07

Toss away any prejudice you may have about what a live album should or should not be. JZ's hand-picked ultimate WR concert performance is an amazing journey traversing all that was great about this genre bending ensemble: taught solos, tremendous grooves, and mind-blowing soundscapes. Stellar performances by bassists Jaco, Victor Bailey, and Alphonso, and the percussion percolates throughout. For those who bemoan JZ's omission of the first WR incarnation, there's ample documentation via LIVE IN TOKYO which I'm sure the founding WR father took into consideration. A must for modern jazz fans. Tom Semioli

5 out of 5 stars Live Jaco gems! Oh, and Weather Report, too... .......2005-03-23

Cant help gettin' tingly when something unheard of Jaco's is issued, and this is the perrrfect example.

Culled from many different shows from Alphonso and Jaco era's, we are treated to the usual masterclass noodle bug business.

This version of 'Teen Town' blows away the '8:30' rendition, as Jaco's bass is not on any kind of pedal or filter. It just cooks! All the tracks are worthy if you a die hard Weather Report fan...

everytime i hear big girls don't cry i laugh out loud and look like a jackass on the train. that's cool. and so are the moldy peaches.

4 out of 5 stars The moldy peaches are on top.......2004-01-14

What this CD lacks in coherent though, it makes up for wholeheartedly in production quality. With catchy songs like "Who's [who has] got the Crack", the Moldy Peaches are sure to soon become the voice of a new generation -- A generation of twenty-something boys and girls who dress like rabbits, watch cartoons, and sing songs proclaiming their hate for their current genre. The Moldy Peaches once again raise the bar that much higher... perhaps higher than some of their biggest fans.

If you buy one album this year... make sure you have enough money left over for crack.

"Nothing Came Out" is THE BEST unrequited love song ever!! the rest of it kinda reminds me of the Pixies, but whatever it's still good....

His melodies, his lyrics, and his music bring a full enrichment to the lives of listeners that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet.
