Wynton Kelly was a relatively new member of the Miles Davis band when he made this 1959 session, but he had already formed a strong musical partnership with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. The trio would stay together long after their departure from the Davis band and a further tenure with Wes Montgomery. Kelly was an original stylist, who had a lyrical and economical approach and a way of insinuating the blues into everything he touched. You can feel it here in the moving "Willow Weep for Me" and the bright takes on "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" and "On Green Dolphin Street," just getting established as standards in the jazz repertoire and getting distinctive treatments here. His light, flowing lines are well matched by Cobb's spare accents and Chambers's own melodic bass. Benny Golson on tenor, Bobby Jasper on flute, and Nat Adderley on cornet join in to make up a powerful sextet on the extended title tune and two takes of another Kelly original, "Keep It Moving." It's apparent how much Kelly's comping could add to a soloist's work. --Stuart Broomer

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

On this recording your listening to a very young Wynton Kelly.Considered by many as probably the greatest sideman in the buisness,and amoung a handful of the great pianist in Jazz History.After making a name for himself working with Dinah Washington(1955-57),the word spread quickly about Wynton's talents.He worked with the Dizzy Gillespie orchestra during 1957.Then came his famous stint with Miles Davis between 1959-1963.After leaving his tenure with Miles he took the rest of the rhythm section,Paul Chambers(bass)and Jimmy Cobb(drums),to form his own trio,frequently backing Wes Montgomery(quitarist).Always a finesse accompanist,he frequently took on freelance work until his untimely and premature death at age 39.It is very refreshing to here Wynton at the age of 20 performing these classics standards.This album is a unique listen.A genius in the early stages of his illustrious career.Wynton always has that optimistic aura about him,regardless of the tempo.Enjoy.Health and Happiness

    I have seven CD's where Wynton Kelly is a sideman. On most of those, he only plays for one song -- "Naima" on Coltrane's "Giant Steps", "Freddie Freeloader" on Davis' "Kind of Blue", or just part of the CD. So, I was curious to see what Kelly sounded like on his own CD, since he's a good pianist. Two of the songs (actually three, but one is repeated) have Nat Adderley, Benny Golson, and Bobby Jaspar. The rest are just a trio with the popular Paul Chambers and the always good (and still playing) Jimmy Cobb. The two songs with horns are good solid songs, certainly nothing unusual. Before I comment on the rest, I'll admit I tend to judge piano trios very harshly, it's not my favorite jazz lineup. Wynton's trio songs are okay, I think "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me", and "Willow Weep For Me" are pretty good. The rest are fine, but ultimately it's the trio songs which push the CD to a 3-star versus 4-star rating.

    is earthly and Wynton Kelly sound very rich and vibrant.Accompanied by two of other members from Miles band.The outstanding bassit P.Chambers and the most promising drummer J.Cobb.The band displays a notable blues feeling and added,Bobby Jasper offers the warmest flute sound in jazz today.A must for this rare talent by the best fine jazzmen....

    I have always been an admirer of pianist Wynton Kelly, one of the musicians on Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE. And I've heard him on many other recordings too. Yet I've never owned one of *his* albums as leader. Until recently. Perusing my voluminous ALL MUSIC GUIDE TO JAZZ 3rd EDITION (see my review) I did some reading about Kelly's recordings and this was one of two that stuck out in my mind. I now own it and am enjoying it as I write this review. Interestingly, some of Kelly's right hand work on the title track sounds similar to Thelonious Monk. The flute playing is a rare treat in a jazz combo, and that's too bad because Bobby Jasper sounds great here!

    "Softly As the Morning Sunrise" begins with a beautiful bass ostinato compliments of ubiquitous 50s/60s bassist Paul Chambers. The rest slowly join in and Kelly sets the tone with his appealingly bouncy accompaniment. Likewise, "On Green Dolphin Street" works well around Chambers' two-note vamp and walking bass line. Jimmy Cobb is solid -as always- in his restrained and graceful timekeeping. "Willow Weep For Me" and "Old Clothes" are also great tunes; very earthy, very relaxed. Not a dull note is struck here, everything fits together in swinging fashion. It's funny how some albums and artists are so overshadowed by others; Kelly has crafted an album every bit as good as Sonny Clark's COOL STRUTTIN', yet I'm betting most people -even Jazz fans- are not familiar with KELLY BLUE. Well there's no time like the present.

    Highly recommended.

    Recorded in 1959, NY. The sound quality is excellent - digitally remastered. The trio sounds similar to other trios of the day; Kenny Drew Trio and Barrry Harris Trio. The sextet numbers sound a little dated (Mod Squad-ish), but there are only 2 cuts with the sextet. The other 5 are a strong trio performance put in by 3 masters; Wynton Kelly p., Paul Chanbers b., Jimmy Cobb d. I'll add it to my list of favorites. I'm glad I bought it - had to buy it unheard so it was a bit of a risk...

        Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

        Now, if you are a music-lover, and you like The Boston Pops & Arthur Fiedler. You should get it as soon as posible.
