Not Bad But You Should Check Out Miles First.......2006-08-16
I like a few of the songs on this album (especially Some Cow Fonque) but if you like this then you should check out the real deal. Mile Davis was years ahead with his album Doo-Bop. In his wildest dreams Marsalis wouldn't have ever thought of doing an album like this if Miles hadn't already done it. Miles was way ahead of his time creating new musical genres before anyone could even imagine what he was thinking about.
Buckshot and killed.......2005-09-23
This was a pathetic attempt by Branford to try to tie funk, rap, and jazz into one genre. He failed miserably. And when i say failed i mean that this is not good music. Brandford is a great musician, but he was trying to put his stamp on music history and the only footnote he created here was "worst attempt at perpetual fame". There are some saving graces on the CD musically but not enough to overcome the attrocities. This CD should be categorized as new age or avante guarde at best. Jazz should never be associated with this CD whatsoever. Some may find this CD refreshing and inovative but I am not one of them. PLEASE listen to the sample tracks before buying this drink coaster of a CD.
Thoroughly Tasty.......2003-09-10
Branford and the cast play deep on every track. From the most soulful of ballads to the funkiest rendition of "Mona Lisas...", to the straight-ahead blowing from the horn section, to the way the rythmn section wraps around Maya Angelou's poetic verse on "Caged Bird", you'll have plenty to feast your ears on in each track. The musicianship is top-notch. And we out.
Jazz, Acid, Funk and House, but better.......2003-08-06
I can't say enough of how much I love this CD. It's such a great mix of jazz, funk, scratchin', beautiful vocals, and spoken word. Save one or two song oddities that I skip by on my CD, I can play this from start to finish because it's consistent enough to enjoy the theme of the band all the way through.
No Pain, No Gain.......2002-11-28
I saw buckshot lefonque at EMU a few years ago and they were great. Lots of energy and excellent music. The day after the concert I went and bought this CD. My favorite track is "No Pain, No Gain." This upbeat stuff may not cut it for the jazz traditionalist, but for those times that you want to hear jazz but need an adrenaline rush, this CD just might do it!

While he releases his straight-ahead jazz projects under his own name, Branford Marsalis pursues his fusion experiments under the group name of Buckshot LeFonque, even though he's the only consistent member from track to track. Marsalis and such jazz colleagues as trumpeter Russell Gunn, keyboardist Joey Calderazzo, saxophonist David Sanborn and bassist Ben Wolfe seem to be having great fun as they run changes over the funk beat of "James Brown," the hip-hop loops of "Try These On," the Latin-jazz heat of "Jungle Groove" and the harder-than-hard-bop on the untitled, hidden bonus track. The album stumbles, however, when it tries to come to terms with words, as it does on eight of the 13 full-length numbers. There's some marvelous music in the background of these songs--the rhythmic punch of hip-hop linked to the harmonic imagination of be-bop-but it's hard to get past the awkward wordplay dominating the foreground. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Great music, whether you call it jazz, fusion, rap, R&B.......2007-01-12
This is one of those rare albums that you want to listen to over and over again, where you keep hearing new pieces you never heard before.
Like on the track "James Brown Part I and II": Carl Burnett's starting guitar, followed by a drum machine? then the horns, with Branford on tenor and David Sanborn on Alto, point/counter point all the way through. One of my favorite driving songs. Then part II goes into record scrachin' rappin'....then back to the horns. Fantastic.
"Another Day" slows it down, smooth. Then "Try These On" is one of the best mixes of jazz, rap, everything, that I've heard...always with Branford's horn.
"Samba Pop" starts out with a descriptive lyric: "Even if it's jazz in the quiet storm/Bebop converted in a hip hop form". That describes this track perfectly.
And don't miss the unnamed unmarked bonus track (#17 on the CD)...a very tight 4+ minute jazz tune.
I keep wishin' for a 3rd Buckshot album. How 'bout it, Branford? PLEASE!
Tight.......2003-09-10
Tight is what it is. The rhythmn section is locked on every groove, from straight ahead to rap. The improvisation is fiery. There's a ton of attitude on every track. Branford displays a musical genius in his work that is undeniable; that goes for all of his records, including this one. But if you could break free of all the labels regarding form and category, and just make an album of kickin' music, what would you do? I think that's what Mr. Marsalis may have asked himself before venturing off on this one. In my opinion, he hit it way out of the park. It doesn't have to be jazz, rap, techno-absurd or anything else. It just has to be right. And tight. This one makes it on both levels. Get into it, and it will get into you.
Awesome blend of jazz and hip hop!.......2000-08-09
This is one of the most incredible CDs I've ever heard. Marsalis has done an excellent job of blending his wonderful jazz sound with complex beats. Not only are the melodies good, but the improvisation by Marsalis, Calderazzo, Gunn, Sanborn, and the rest bring this CD to a whole other level. This CD shows that this talent covers numerous genres of music. From the up-tempo, intricate Jungle Grove, to the slow, moving Pheonix, to the heavy, My Way (Doin' It); the music never loses its good sound. It's been one of my favorite CDs for the three years that I've had it. I deffinatly recommend it to anyone.
Speaking of evolution..........2000-07-29
Music evolution change/sometimes the common make it sound strange/ add a little this/take out a little that/then you'll come up with that jazz called rap/where it's at/take it back/because it is an ill format!
The issue is music evolution, and Buckshot LeFonque provides the listener with a lesson the way it should be done; take a monster band, make some great songs in a lot of different styles (although the jazz denominator will shine through on quite a lot of them), unite the music through its diversity, shake and stir, produce well, and there it is! Music evolution, or just pure listening pleasure. Rarely does a band/concept manage to make a set like this! There is plenty of good groove, acid jazz, a couple of ballads (featuring the remarkable Frank McComb), funk, samba hop, bebop converted in a hip hop norm, top level musicianship, entertainment, fun... I could just go on and on. This is a record that truly grows on you, and although it's got three years on its back now, it's still as fresh as it gets! This is probably going to be a true classic, summing up the nineties' eclectism and music evolution so far!
Go get it!
Fun mixture, but not always my taste.......2000-04-03
I like jazz, I like funk, I like a good beat, but I just have some troubles with rap. Blame it on my skin color, if you like, but all the raps on this CD seem just a tad boring to me, completely in contrast to the instrumental or sung numbers, which are innovative and fresh and a pleasure to hear. My favourites are tracks 4 and 5, especially the unfortunately very short but very soulful alto solo on Another Day.

If you really have open ears about music, pick up this CD! It's not jazz, it's not funk, nor is it hip hop, but it has elements of many styles. As Buckshot LeFonque's leader, Branford Marsalis, might say, "It's just good music!" ...and we out!
