Product Description
With a Renewed Lease on Life, Chris Rea is Now Recording the Way He Has Always Said He Would. Last Year's Critically Acclaimed "Stony Road" was the First Fruit of this Vigor and "Blue Street" is Really It's Corallary. For this Set, Rea's Voice Sits Out Most of it and Concentrates Completely on his Guitar Playing on this Instrumental Set. The Results Simply Wonderful! all the Energy that is Usually Heard in his Expressive Vocal Tones Come Through Loud and Clear with Every Note Strummed. Only on "Still Going to a Go Go" Do the Chops Spring Into Action for Just a Few Lines. Longtime Fans (And Newcomers Alike) Will Really Marvel at the Musicianship and the Artistry Here. Rea Has Only Gotten Better Each Year Like Fine Wine and Since his Near Brush with the Grim Reaper, his Recordings Are Sharper in Focus and Absolutely Brilliant!

His Band and the Street Choir appeared at a time--1970--when Van Morrison was building on the great critical successes of Astral Weeks and Moondance. His third Warner Bros. album contains a number of radio-friendly tracks clearly aimed at the singles market and few clues of the serious, brooding melancholy of Astral Weeks. Kicking off with the jaunty "Domino," the album is generally dominated by uptempo swingers such as "Call Me Up in Dreamland," "Give Me a Kiss," and "Blue Money." The cover photography and liner notes by then wife Janet Planet reveal a smiling Morrison and hint at a newfound personal contentment. This mood did not last long after Van left the artists' community of Woodstock. But even here, in "I'll Be Your Lover Too" and "Crazy Face," there are moments that are essential listening for fans of his sullen splendor and mysticism. --Rob Stewart

Old fashion style - good vocal performance.......2007-03-08
In this album I like the song I'll be you r love too, poetic, great vocal and guitar performance. Is an example of what you can do with a guitar and voice alone. Raw style - great music
The song appears in a movie with Russel Crow and Meg Ryan, about terrorism in the Andes 'Proof of life'

Mediocrity Illustrated.......2006-10-15
Okay, I love Van but this isn't really much of a record. If you can find it cheap, I'd recommend it. But don't pay full price for it. There are quite a few good songs - Crazy Face, I've Been Working, Sweet Jannie and the hit Blue Money (annoying "Do do you do" refrain aside"). Then there are a couple of great songs: the downtempo I'll Be Your Lover Too and soaring Street Choir. And there's one excellent song: the big hit Domino, propelled by an excellent horn chart and funky beat. But there are a couple of issues. Van's never been much of a lyricist (it seems he spent most of his talents along those lines on Astral Weeks), and too many of these songs are pedestrian love tunes with predictable Moon/June/Spoon rhymes - If I Ever Needed Someone, for example. Also, there's a LOT of generic, faceless R&B - Give Me a Kiss, Call Me Up In Dreamland and Gypsy Queen, namely. It gets worse. Virgo Clowns is one of the most annoying songs this guy ever attempted, and Gypsy Queen suffers from an awkward falsetto (the same he would later employ on Warm Love, one of his most forgettable hits). Domino is one of the guy's finest moments, but sadly the rest of the record doesn't measure up. It's still a relatively respectable record, but it doesn't compare to Astral Weeks or Moondance. If you can find it used, go for it. Just don't pay full price.
Great Album.......2006-03-18
These reviews are always messy because the people that write them tend to be either extremely for or against whatever it is they are reviewing. I will do nothing to combat this.
This album's five star rating is justified. Great opening track with "Domino," but it's not the best. "Virgo Clowns" is hauntingly beautiful (pardon the cliche), especially when Dahaud Elias Shaar comes in on his bass clarinet. The next track, "Gypsy Queen," is another R&B winner all the way.
I read the _Rolling Stone's_ review of this album, and it was accused of being _too_ perfect--too much goodness on one album, like _Moondance_. That's a good point.
Anything else I say would just be repeating everyone else, so just read some reviews, listen to the samples, and make your own decision. Chances are you're predisposed to like Van Morrison if you're already here anyway, which further suggests that you're likely to buy the album, or at least have a struggle of whether or not to pay 13 bucks for it. I'd advise you to take the plunge, but it's up to you.

Amazing.......2007-03-31
When I was younger I had the casette recording of this album. I listened to it so many times I actually wore the tape so thin you could hear both sides (A and B) at the same time. I've been looking at second hand shops for this album ever since, I never imagined it was still being made. Every single song on this album is bound to become a family favorite. Just because songs are safe for kids to listen to doesn't mean they have no use for adults. There are some beautiful love songs on this album. Stereotypical children's songs get old fast. How many times can you listen to twinkle twinkle little star and the alphabet song before going crazy because they're the same tune? These songs will give a much needed burst of color into your child's music collection.
Suberb Kids' Album.......2007-03-20
This is definitely one you can listen to in the car. It's on the second generation, as I just bought it for my granddaughter. Her mama (my daughter) was so excited because she grew up on it, too!
In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record.......2007-02-26
This is a beautiful, timeless album. My son just turned 30. He loved it when he was young, and his daughter loves it now. It's not too cutesy or goofy, but really good music done by wonderful artists.
"In Harmony".......2007-02-03
"In Harmony" is a CD that I often checked out from the library when my children were small. Our favorites on the CD include James Taylor singing about Jelly Man Kelly and Bette Midler singing about Blueberry Pie. Linda Ronstadt sings about wanting a horse. Livingston Taylor, James' brother, sings about having his pajamas on.
Carly Simon and her sister are on the CD, also. The Simon-Taylor family get together on the song "In Harmony". Too bad that they didn't stay in harmony.
I received the CD in less than a week and it was still in the original shrink wrap.
Listen to a classic.......2007-01-16
Music for the whole family; if you grew up with Sesame Street, or watched it with your own children, you'll enjoy this blend of compositions.

Album Description
Green Street, recorded on April 1, 1961, was Grant Green's second Blue Note album as a leader and remains one of the finest albums of his prolific Blue Note output. Supported by just Ben Tucker's bass and Dave Bailey's drums, the guitarist seems inspired by the absence of any other chordal instrument. His harmonic and interpretive imagination is in high gear on this unique masterpiece in his discography. Added to the original album are two alternate takes.

Customer Reviews:
This is a GREAT CD.......2007-01-09
This is a listen "all day CD". It fits all moods and settings. Wonderful music by a super talented musician.
A Great First Buy from Grant Green........2006-11-10
To be honest and up front, I'm not entirely familiar with the music of Grant Green nor am I familiar with his history as an artist. However, I must say that upon hearing his classic album "Green Street", I was highly impressed.
Recorded for Blue Note in 1961, "Green Street" finds Grant Green performing in a stripped down power trio setting. Because of the absence of other instruments such as piano or horns, this gives Green plenty of room to show off his relentless guitar chops. Most of the pieces are on the bluesy side such as the opening title track, "Grant's Dimensions" and the cover version of the standard "Alone Together". His version of Thelonious Monk's "Round About Midnight" shows off a tender yet still blues-oriented side of his playing while "Green With Envy" reminded me a bit of the instrumental/fusion side of the Allman Brothers Band (for some reason the Allman's "In memory of Elizabeth Reed" came to mind while listening to this track).
Rounding out the disc are two bonus alternate takes of "Alone Together" and "Green With Envy" which are a bit shorter than their master take counterparts.
As mentioned above, I'm not overall familiar with Grant Green's music but have found this release to be highly enjoyable. Grant was definitely a guitarist who was ahead of his game and his influence can be heard in guitarists that came to prominence after him in both Jazz and rock.
This is my first purchase of a Grant Green CD and I highly recommend this one to anyone looking for some great guitar Jazz. There's a lot of it here.
Definitely a classic!!!
It's All Green .......2005-10-27
What I think is cool about this album is its just Grant, a bass player and a drummer. There are no horns and there isn't even a keyboard player. So you really hear the guitar. And there are also some great jazz standards here, like 'Round Midnight and Alone Together. If you like jazz guitar, you must have this album. Just buy it!
Great jazz guitar.......2004-08-20
For a jazz fan, this is required listening. For a jazz GUITAR fan, this is essential. As a guitar player myself, I usually find frustrating that jazz guitar albums tend to steal the focus away from the guitar player by allowing other instruments to solo. This album was a nice surprise. Just guitar, just extended solos, no other instrument in the way. And what a guitar player Grant Green was! I'd certaintly recommend this as a first purchase for any guitar players out there who want to get to know jazz guitar.
Grant Green at his best!.......2004-06-26
This one features some great playing by Green, you hear his normal bag of tricks with some surprises. Nobody has a touch like Green did, this is a great cd to study his sound, it is very clear. Also notice how Green outlines the changes with no piano. Ben Tucker and Dave Bailey give great performances too, listed to Bailey's snare drum comping, he brings the best out of Green. Listen and try to figure out what tune is based on Nica's Dream.

Crusaders Street Life.......2007-07-09
This is an old relaease that I had on vinyl and wanted on CD. It is still an excellent releaase of the Crusaders near their peak in my opinion. Not as outstanding as the Crusader 1 release. That album release was the greatest work by the Crusaders and this is second in their lineup.
awesome vocals by Randy Crawford..........2007-06-14
the girl just tears up that unforgettable classic song. The whole album is Crusaders at their finest. They tear it up and uplift you. Street Life is the one you'll never forget but the rest of the album also has the band playing tight and riffing. One of my fav Crusades albums.
THE STREET LIFE DON'T CHANGE!!!.......2007-03-13
Almost thirty years later, this is still one of the most prolific albums of all time. I was all of nine years old when the single "Street Life" debuted on what we now call urban radio. Although the Crusaders are considered a jazz ensemble, the understated rawness and delivery of Ms. Crawford made this song a hit, and as a result, a crossover sucess in the r&b genre. The lyrics paint such a vivid picture and a cautionary tale of life in the streets, and it still rings true today. As far as I am concerned, the intro to this song is the most epic and complete, even today with its wailing saxaphone solo. There are some songs that will forever be imbedded in your mind because it takes back to that place, and this album for me is one of them. Pick it up!!!!
Possibly one of The Crusaders' best.......2006-12-14
Another great album in my collection has just made it from vinyl to CD. These dudes have a vast catalogue of great albums but this one is not just about the brilliant "Street Life" featuring Randy Crawford on vocals, (though in my opinion it would be worth buying for that song alone). No, this is possibly Crusaders at their funky, soulful, jazzy best. The other five songs here - two written by keyboardist Joe Sample, two by saxophonist Wilton Felder and one by drummer Stix Hooper, are all gems in their own right and classic Crusaders. Watch out also, for some exciting guitar solos from Barry Finnerty. With no bonus tracks and no fancy remixes, this is the album as the band originally intended. 39mins and 22sec might sound short in today's money but believe me, they make every second count. I love it. I believe this album is a must-have for any jazz fusion fan.
But even if you're not into jazz or are thinking of getting into it for the first time, this is a nice album to start you off. You may also want to consider another of their masterpieces: "Rhapsody and Blues". It has the classic song, "Soul Shadows" featuring the legendary Bill Withers on vocals.
My Favorite Crusaders CD.......2005-12-26
I have owned or listened to most of what The Crusaders have done over the years. This CD is their best and my favorite. The top songs are the title track and Rodeo Drive (High Steppin'). The other selections are good too. If you like music with a lot of horns and an upbeat tempo this will satisfy your needs. If you are a new fan this is the place to start!

Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13
This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.
A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25
This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!
Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12
It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."
An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18
The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Street Lady says it all.......2006-10-03
Do you need some music for a sunny drive, whether down memory lane or creating new memories. Street Lady is outasight!!
Sultry Byrd.......2006-09-25
You can almost feel the heat off the Harlem (or neighbourhood) pavement from these tunes. There's a sultriness to these vibes that recalls hot summer breezes, just hanging out, and the natural horniness that days like that arouses. A very outdoor groove abounds here, with instrumentation and chord progressions that recall blaxploitation soundtracks, but with greater flair and always with the lightness of spirit and sheer delight in life that Byrd exhibits so flawlessly in his more upbeat offerings. Easy perhaps to overlook as a funky background music, it's actually an accomplished affair and another example of Byrd's mastery of creating atmosphere.
Street Lady..........2005-09-24
Street Lady is a eclectic mix of contemporay jazz tunes that one can sit and listen to. My favorite cuts are "Street Lady" and "Lansanas Street Priestess!" I suggest that you take a chance of the collection! Oh, and by the way, those aren't ladies on the cover of the album! It took me years before I actually figured that one out!! Four Stars!
Sweet Street Lady.......2003-01-17
I have this on vinyl...one of my favorite Blue Note album covers.
The music is very dated 70's blaxploitation, which happens to be one of my most favorite sounds. Plenty of flute and wah wah guitars. The vibe here is the ghetto in late afternoon when the street ladies start walking the beat. Actually this album is a loosely formed concept album based on a prostitute. This really isn't jazz - perhaps jazzy R&B or funk would be a better description. If you enjoy the background music in Curtis Mayfield and Bobby Womack cuts - you'll feel right at home with this one.
you can Vibe off this ALbum.......2001-08-05
another Laid-Back album from Donald Byrd. His Arrnagements&Feel make this ALbum as along with his other 70's output a must. His Grooves here capture a Scene&Vibe going on.I can Listen to His 70's Output all day&Night.another solid Production&Instrumentation on this set.you feel the Vibe going down.

Album Description
This album features the incredible trio of Green, organist Larry Young and drummer Elvin Jones with guest Bobby Hutcherson on vibes. Playing such lyrical standards as "Lazy Afternoon" and "Street Of Dreams," they create a riveting mood, never shying away from the challenge to create jazz of quality and depth.

Mixed Feelings.......2006-02-19
I bought this CD only last week and have listened to it 4 or 5 times. Just having gone through a phase of listening to guitar/organ combos, I bought this and Pat Martino's "El Hombre" the same day. So far, I prefer the Martino CD much more, but that's a little unfair, because that is more fiery and dynamic than this was ever supposed to be, and that has just happened to be my mood lately.
I think I like the idea of this recording better than the recording itself - so far. The instrumentation is superb - guitar/organ/drums, and one of my newest favorites, Bobby Hutcherson, on vibes. My problem is with Green himself. If this had been a Larry Young CD I would probably have had no problem with it...he's at the top of his form. It's not that Green doesn't carry the weight of the improvisations, but at times he sound a little uninspired - lines that abruptly end, note that he flubs. He almost sounds like he is "noodling" a bit at times, not quite sure of where he's going with a solo. Now I'd rather hear Grant Green noodle than many others on a good session, and I'm sure that this CD will grow on me with a few more listens ("Green Street" did just that), but that is just my initial observations. I hope I read my review a month from now and say "what the hell was I thinking?", which, if I know my listening relationship with Green's music, will surely be the case.
If this sounds a little too critical, it's not - I still like the song selection, the guitar tone, MOST of Green's playing, and the sound of the ensemble. A great, mellow album that perhaps in a less boisterous mood I'd give 5 stars. It is worth the investment.
Thanks - and don't overlook Martino's CD if the guitar/organ thing sounds appealing!
Velvety Tumescence .......2005-12-20
This is one of my top ten favorite jazz albums. It captures a certain feel of West Coast Cool. It's mellow music but there is complexity and brilliance to Green's guitar work that gives the music an intricacy and vigor worth listening to over and over again. Smooth but not flaccid. But this album would be an important part of your jazz collection even without appreciating the cryptic subtleties that lend it weight. It works just as well on a simpler level, purely on it's charming, hypnotic sound. Green's guitar solos float buoyantly over the smooth sounds of Larry Young's organ work, accented by Bobby Hutcherson's vibes and an appropriately restrained Elvin Jones on drums. Don't believe me? Sample track 3, Streets of Dreams, and see.
It's rare to find such a beautiful blending of instruments. Musicians complimenting each other with such generosity of spirit and such clarity of sound and vision, it will shame away every negative emotion tucked away in your subconscious. It's like a colonic hydrotherapy for the soul, but without the risks of intestinal perforations and flash edema. Less invasive too, wouldn't you say? For best results, go get a deep tissue massage, then rush immediately to your local osteopath for some vigorous thoracic and lumbar adjustments. Then, drive home, take just a pinch of Xanax and a baby dose of chloral hydrate. Take a hot shower, pour yourself a tall Tanqueray on the rocks, and put the album on. Dim the lights. Fire up a lava lamp if you've got one. If you must smoke, I would go with a light Maryland pipe tobacco, unsweetened, mixed with just a smidgen of smoky Cyprian latakia. Please do not operate heavy machinery while listening to this music.
You're welcome.
Companion to Idle Moments.......2005-10-27
If you liked "Idle Moments" you will probably like this one too. I ended up trading both of them in!
Still Listening After 30 Years.......2005-02-14
I bought this on vinyl in the 1970s and recently on CD. A magic musical session. All musicians at the top of their game. Plus, I love the lineup: guitar, organ, vibes, drums. Great. My only regret is that there weren't any more cuts from this session in the can. Sigh!

True Jazz from True Jazz Artists.......2003-07-03
This album is one of my favorites because the band gels so nicely. Often times, you can set up the best musician at each spot and have absolutely no chemistry. In this case however, the best at each spot have tremendous chemistry. Green of course holds his own, but especially when he plays with Larry Young. "Somewhere in the Night" lets us hear Young's chords and tri-tones in a subtle setting, but it exemplifies his one-of-kind style and greatness. Jones doesn't need to do much but keep the rythym, which he always does very well. Hutcherson on the vibes...this guy kills. He adds a unique touch to these standards of which we are not accustomed to hearing with vibes included. But, it works...making this an excellent album, especially when you just wanna kick back and really enjoy and admire some real jazz.

Got to like it.......2007-02-01
When I heard samples from this CD, I really wanted to get it. However, when I did and listened the full versions I did not seem to like them that much. There are several pices that I totally do not care for, a few I really like (especially, Bach's pieces), and some I got used to. Overall, I like the CD, but not as much as I though I would.
A gleaming vision of brass sound.......2005-10-18
The Canadian Brass have been a lively and fun force in music for decades, since being brought together in Toronto 'by a gleaming vision of brass sound'. They are now world famous, having delighted and dazzled people in concerts all over the globe. One of the problems for a group such as this is the lack of repertoire readily available, so the group has become expert at arranging pieces for other instruments for their ensemble. They have also commissioned a good number of pieces of their performance.
One such commission is found on this recording, entitled 'The Well-Tampered Bach', a take-off on the Bach work 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a setting of various pieces by J.S. Bach for brass quintet and drums, worked by Luther Henderson for the ensemble's 1985 appearance in Toronto. Henderson is a frequent arranger and composer for the Canadian Brass, having also put together the 'Tuba Tiger Rag', reminiscent of the World War I era, and jazz pieces like 'Beale Street Blues'.
More traditional composers are represented in arrangement for brass, such as a more standard arrangement for Bach's Fugue in G minor, Mozart's Turkish Rondon, and pieces from Gabrieli, Vivaldi, Strauss, Rossini, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pachelbel.
The disc has a wonderful blend of pieces classical and modern, 'proper' composition and traditional/folk inspiration, and a very lively and powerful presentation of all the music.
wow.......2001-07-20
This CD is amazing. It's a shame more people don't know about this incredible group. I'm a brass player and I just learned of these guys a few months ago. If you like classical music or brass music, this is a must own!
Essential CD.......2000-12-12
If you like the sound of brass and if your tastes run the gamut from Gabrieli to Handy, with stops hither and yon, this CD is essential to your collection. In it, the Canadian Brass demonstrate their amazing ability to play the early Baroque masters right along side the early jazz masters -- and make it seem perfectly natural! In the process, a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov, Mozart and Lord knows what gets thrown in for good measure. Plus, they play a rousing rendition of Bach's "Little Fugue in G Minor." If the music on this CD doesn't get you going, you need to immediately go to the ER at the nearest hospital!
The Best "Best of" the Canadian Brass.......1999-10-26
If you buy one Canadian Brass CD, buy this one. It contains the widest variety of musical eras and styles. Our favorite CB song, Beale Street Blues is hard to find, but on this CD. There are serious, classical selections and fun songs such as the "Tuba Tiger Rag" and "Flight of the Tuba Bee". This is Brass Quintet music at its best!
