From Jazziz
Whenever Jeff Kashiwa gets fed up with the day-to-day grind of being one of smooth jazz's most popular saxmen, all he has to do is recall the late '80s. He was working an unspectacular day job and playing too many weekend weddings when his friend, bassist Steve Bailey, helped get him an audition to replace saxophonist Brandon Fields in the Rippingtons. Kashiwa landed the gig. During the next ten years Kashiwa became one of the focal points of the Ripps' classic sound. In the mid '90s he took some rare downtime to produce two well-received solo efforts, Remember Catalina and Walkamile. Kashiwa quit the Ripps in early 1999 to focus fully on his own career. Consequently, his Native Language debut Another Door Opens is a true sink-or-swim proposition.

Kashiwa brings two crucial legacies from his tenure with the Ripps - the tutelage of Russ Freeman and the forging of an amazing creative partnership with Ripps' keyboardist Dave Kochanski, who co-produced Another Door Opens and wrote four of its songs, including the first single, a brassy, swaying, retro-funk-flavored number called "Hyde Park (The 'Ah, Oooh' Song)."

While he's becoming a better all-around sax player, the real litmus test of Kashiwa's solo future lies in his ability to compose strong melodies over today's popular urban-shuffle grooves. On "Power of Midnight," he floats a wistful soprano melody over the thick, throbbing bass of Melvin Davis and the clicking drums of Ricky Lawson. While most of his and Kochanski's writing here is pop-oriented and in-the-pocket, the simmering, ominous blues vamp of Kashiwa's "Dream Within a Dream" makes a perfect launch pad for his soaring tenor. More impressively, the gently percussive soprano melody of the title track - while nothing groundbreaking - rings with the kind of beauty Freeman brought to the Ripps' best ballads.

5 out of 5 stars 10 out of 10 one of the best smooth jazz albums ever.......2007-05-20

An absolutely blinding album , i am just gutted i missed him in london at jazz cafe and pizza express. The title track deserves serious attention.Back to love and Every now and then are perfect smooth jazz.Mr.Kashiwa is carrying Native Language more so now since the departure of Steve Oliver.

4 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL CAPTIVATING.......2005-03-24

Just listening to Jeff at the moment, there are 3 songs on this album which i would recommend besides Hyde Park, they are: Every Now and Then, Back to Love and the title track Another Door Opens.
Like most of the other guys i have watched the Ripps play live and have seen Jeff live as well at the Jazz Cafe in London, he sets your soul on fire.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of Rarefied Air.......2003-01-24

This is an album I did not pick for myself. It was a gift, and a fine one at that! Before listening to this album in total, the only Jeff Kashiwa I had "heard" was the song Hyde Park (the "ah, oooh" song). When I listened to this whole CD through, I soon discovered sax playing that sounded oh so familiar but not because it was a copy of someone. I quickly learned that Jeff had been with the Rippingtons prior to venturing out on his solo career, and while I never owned a Rippingtons album, I had "heard" them. Jeff's style is so memorable because he has a beautiful touch on the sax -- light, quick and his tone is airy. He really engages you in his playing.

Every Now & Then -- an exquisitely beautiful tune where Melvin Davis on bass and Ricky Lawson on drums lay down a rhythm that is so cool and two Jeffs --Kashiwa and guest Jeff Lorber-- let fly on top. This is one of the best smooth jazz tunes I know of. Thank you, Jeff, for including this song.

The Power of Midnight -- Melvin Davis swings on this song with an unstoppable bass line while Jeff weaves his magic on soprano sax. You never want this song to ever end. It will coax you right out of any doldrums you find yourself in; in other words, smile.

Around the World -- a gutsy number where Jeff is always in control of his axe. You will realize the chemistry between Kashiwa, Davis and Lawson on this CD is awesome.

Another Door Opens -- the title track and longest song on this album. Man...I was made for jazz, and this tune has an uplifting feel for me. It has an infectious lilt with some really smooth keyboards by Kashiwa and nice acoustic piano work by Russell Ferrante and Will Kennedy on drums.

Finish it up with Best of Times, the last track on the CD. Hope you enjoy the ride. Best to you.

5 out of 5 stars Everythings Good on This Album.......2002-10-12

I saw Jeff perform at the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery in Woodinville, WA. My wife was so impressed she had me buy this CD and now I'm glad she did. Most CDs have a couple of good songs, a couple great songs and a whole bunch of poor songs. Not this one. They're all great. I'll buy more!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I'M GALD HE LEFT THE RIPPINGTONS!.......2001-11-11

It's a good thing Jeff left the Ripps because every single song on "Another Door Opens" is FANTASTIC! He really is one of the best smooth jazz artists around in my opinion. His albums just keep getting better. The Ripps are doing fine as well,so it looks as if the split turned out for the better.
