And on What Goes Around, Holland stakes his big band on the same values with phenomenal success. Mingus and Ellington are clearly the inspiration here, with jumping solos running alongside brass and reed riffs aplenty. The leader's longstanding emphasis on hummable melodies is of utmost importance, from the first, loping lines of "Triple Dance" through the bounding, three-minute bass solo and Ellingtonian riff-making on "Shadow Dance." Steve Nelson's vigorous vibraphone serves as rhythm and melody so fluidly that it draws the ear through the well-ordered crowd of 10 horns toward the big, pumping hearts of these tunes. Chris Potter's tenor cuts a formidable, excited swath, as does drummer Billy Kilson's swift marriage of Elvin Jones's force and Billy Higgins's snapping sharpness. A very well written song but.......2007-04-30

still It's Justin Timberlake and his girlie voice. Don't get me wrong, Justin Timberlake is not 100 percent talentless. I just have a hard time accepting that girlie voice. I can't stand when male singers hit all those high notes like they are Mariah Carey or something. he doesn't always sing girlie like on the verses of this song. If he could sing like he does on the verses of this song 100 percent of the time, I'd probably give his music (not just this song) 5 star ratings. Anyways, I gave this song 3 stars due to it's lyrics. It is a very well written song.

Justin Timberlake has officially ended his warm-up and has decided to bring his messages into the spotlight with much attitude! Dance fans enjoy this single for the great title track, non-album song, and long Mysto & Pizzi Mix as well as close to 5 minutes Junkie XL Small Room Mix.

WHAT GOES AROUND...COMES AROUND... [Radio Edit] 5:09 is the song many have already heard on the radio with the catchy dance beats, highly energetic sounds, some background vocals by Timbaland, and nice up-tempo bass-lines.

BOUTIQUE IN HEAVEN 4:12 [Non-Album Track] - The lyrics are romantic as he sings, "Where did you get that beauty from? The tempo is mellow like Prince with some R&B flairs, and higher pitched vocals along a dive to lower pitched ones. This sounds like his album along the lines of the song "Damn Girl" and "Love Stoned".

WHAT GOES AROUND...COMES AROUND... [Mysto & Pizzi Mix] 7:43 is the longer type mixes many club hoppers enjoy. There are plenty of elevated swirls, techno echoes, repetitive vocals, and trance. The climaxing styles along the liquid sounding elements definitely get you in the dance mood! There are plenty of tribal drums, banging bass, and thumping beats. There are not so many vocals present.

WHAT GOES AROUND...COMES AROUND [Junkie XL Small Room Mix] 4:54 is my favorite since Justin's vocals are heard much more. While the previous track took a heavy techno effect this one spins a more dance party type feeling combining techno with pop, R&B, and much singing. If you are a junkie of funky small club mixes then you will find this captivating. It's very enjoyable for it's lack of monotony, less exaggerated boom [to add variety], and for its mind-blowing highly energetic effects.

All the other import singles for this song have all edits of the dance mixes, but this particular disc gives us a 7 minute and 43 second version of the mysto & pizzi mix, which isn't on any of the other releases, and is probably one of the best mixes available. It's a slamming, dark hardhouse mix with a trance synth riff that makesit a total killer. It is THE reason to get this release, because all the other mixes and the track Boutique in Heaven are on all the other releases.

Okay, I don't have this cd, and I have not heard this song. But, I have heard the Junkie XL remix of this song and it is totally awesome. It is perfect for all of us who enjoy excellent house and awesome dance music. Hey, you don't have to take my word for it, but if you don't get this single, you are missing out BIG TIME. The Junkie XL remix is all that you need and truely is a great house hit. Even if you can't hear the sample, you will not be disappointed at this track if you make the 'blind' purchase.

As the trend towards "cyber" music continues, remix CD singles are rarely being released domestically in the US, with only slightly better luck from imports, part of the problem with imports being what happens here. It's ALL edits instead of the full length mixes. and as a total tease, the cd insert AND disc label list the "wookie mix" as running 7:29, when it's only 3:55! The Wookie mix is a groovier house mix, Sebastian Leger's mix has more of an electro/filter house vibe. The Junkie XL small room mix (as compared to the longer BIG room mix that is not included) is my personal favorite, with the hardest and most danceable groove of the three remixes.

As for the non-LP track, Boutique in Heaven is a downtempo R&B jam, sort of like many of the tracks on Justin's fulll length CD that i skip because I prefer his funkier stuff. But for fans of his slower stuff, this is a real treat.

i never thought i'd fall so hard for this spinning top of a song - a mesmerizing whorl that cozies up, cuddles, folds into itself, goes deep, gets bent, recovers, then unspools spent listener softly back into the nuzzling throb of perfect plush layering. justin works the dancer's body language confidence inside his voice achieving fauvish delight of soul sexy then sulking sultry vocals. storytelling, lecturing or is this guy just talking to himself? the ascension of his heartbreak brings an engaging balancing act of poptartism---crooning disbelief and hurt as the byproduct of pure love wearing the armor of karmic kickback. jt borrows the buddhist's contemplation solution to tackle his post coital conundrum-building the groove while messaging the repetitive scold of infinity's comeuppence ---the realization that we all kneel and swoon at the alter of universal forces well beyond our control....jt's lovesickness no exception.....talk about being in the palm of someone's hand...

Justin Turns Up The Heat! He's On Fire!.......2007-03-11

This single takes a turn into a storm of circling beats that go around and around displaying attitude, pulsating dance beats, and much attitude and confidence in lyrical quality. Justin's voice sounds very much improved. This 2-track single comes housed in a slim-line jewel case and is a definite choice to add if you bought the Part 2 or just love Justin's sophomore album FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS.

While many of his past singles had the album or edit versions accompanied by the Instrumental version, this one had the RADIO EDIT and a fabulous REMIX that does not stray away too much from the original song.

The RADIO EDIT 5:09 has excellent musical beats carrying the message strong with spiraling styles of how what you do comes back. Justin's voice has a nice sound, as his vocal range is not too high or too deep.

SEBASTIEN LEGER REMIX RADIO EDIT 4:14 has a pulsating up and down volume introduction that carries the feeling of something going around and around over and over. This has elements of dance techno beats but not over the top in the sense the song is not changed much with the exception of the up and down spiraling repetitive beats. Overall, this is a song focusing on the message behind the song. The beats climax at each turn going back to the beginning up and down storm obviously focused in making it clear: What goes around...comes around.

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Absolutly stunning!!!.......2006-01-04

In all the Dave Holland's discography in my opinion this one really stands out. I own all the Dave Holland's recent recordings, quintet, quartet, trio and they are all great, great records. But this one is special. It is incredible, amazing. A big band which plays intricate and hypermodern arrangements on the well known trademark Dave's bass textures and compositions. I'm glad Dave recordedin this big band format a couple of his older compositions taken from the "Steve Coleman period", the one that saw "Razor's edge", "Jumpin' in", "Seeds of time" coming to light. I repeat this is a hell of a project. "Quick horns, fat bass, sharp angles, and lyrical melodies" is exactly what you'll find here together with the finest musicianship possible, and ultramodern very interesting arrangements that take pride in remembering the big band history! Billy kilson is a freak, a musical freak, a force of nature! I mean this is really something spectacular that you can add to your Jazz cds collection. I couldn't suggest a better buying in terms of contemporary albums. It is incredibly well written, arranged, played and it is incredibly entertaining to be such deep music!!! One thousand stars. Buy it, you'll thank me later. Go!

I was a little disappointed given the hype, although I sucumbed and bought the thing based on the Downbeat reviews! It finally convinced me that Downbeat is a tired magazine for old men which no longer has any relevance . Anyway, this is a pleasant inoffensive CD.

Dave's first foray into big band music.......2004-03-28

Dave Holland's quintet is recognized in many quarters as the premiere modern jazz band--though not without a counterargument from skeptics who find it too slick & well-oiled an engine. This quintet--featuring Robin Eubanks on trombone, Chris Potter on saxophone, Steve Nelson on vibes, Billy Kilson on drums--is the core of the 13-piece ensemble on _What Goes Around_, Holland's first big-band album as a leader. (Is it a big band? It says so on the cover, but at 13 musicians this is more of a mid-size ensemble perhaps. Certainly the "feel" of the music is still very much like a small group, without the weight--or, fortunately, the blare--of a full-size band.) The material is familiar from the bassist's small-group records; Holland writes all the arrangements, which are capable though not at the level of the best contemporary arrangers like Kenny Wheeler or Maria Schneider. The playing is all at a high level, as you'd expect, though I find it hard to warm to Antonio Hart & Chris Potter, both of them soloists who could stand to back off a bit--Potter in particular is always such a pushy, self-consciously "hot" soloist, inclined to step into the false register as a matter of course. Trumpeter Alex Siapagin does a few nice turns in a vein halfway between Wheeler & Woody Shaw, possibly in response to Holland's charts on "Upswing" & "First Snow", which contain echoes of those musicians' work.

This album caused quite a splash when it was released in 2002; I'm not entirely sure why, as while it's a nice enough release it's not outstanding by any means. As it happens the best big-band disc I heard in 2002 was actually Carl Saunders' _Be Bop Big Band_: a bunch of largely unheralded veterans of West Coast big bands, performing exceptionally fine charts by Herb Phillips. By comparison this album may have the big names on it but they haven't got the depth of involvement & experience in big bands that Saunders' bunch have. Holland has, however, continued to work in the big band format, so perhaps he'll raise his game a bit on a sequel.

Great Band and Very Serious Stuff.......2004-03-12

I first heard the Dave Big Band play at the University of Massachusetts where our jazz band got a clinic from Robin Eubanks, lead trombonist, during the jazz festival activities. That definitely was the best concert i've ever been to and decided to get the CD and the CD is just as great as the concert was. This music is some very serious stuff. It's feels like they're taking me on a journey to some far out place. It's very cool and interesting

Is Dave Holland the best British Jazz composer? I certainly can't think of a better one.

I can't praise this CD enough. Dave Hollands quintet has always sounded to me like a larger group, such is the depth of the arrangements. So the question was, could he pull it off with a real Big Band? The answer is a resounding Yes. The arrangements are top class, the musicianship superb and the compositions brilliant. The music has that distinctive Dave Holland signature, with Mingus influences and a pinch of Ellington.

This CD is MUST for everyone who loves great music.

The CD really does give a (favorable) reflection of Shadowfax's work. Even if t wasn't, it's still a great album.

Incredibly Motivating and Moving!.......2007-01-19

This CD spikes my creativity, motivates to expand the mind to be more open and is purely a "feel good" medicine for a heavy heart. I thank the artists for generously sharing their talent for others to benefit in many ways.

Solid collection, Great for new fans.......2006-01-09

four and 1/2 stars. I love this band and grew up listening to Shadowdance. No other band sounds like this band. You would never confuse Shadowfax with anyone else, they are that distinctive. It's a whole new headspace. Chuck's death in 1995 was heartbreaking to me as I was hoping to see them play live but never got the chance. This is a solid collection with great tracks from their earlier work. As the previous reviewer noted, it does not contain important material from their later releases (this album used to be called "Shadowfax A Windham Hill Retrospective") but even so all the tracks on it are solid. If you like this I'd recommend picking up Shadowdance and The Dreams of Children.

Best Of Shadowfax on Windham Hill ONLY.......2002-08-06

The title implies that this is the best of Shadowfax. And indeed it is a good collection from their earlier years on the Windham Hill label. As always, there are tracks that I would like to see (like "Above the Wailing Wall" from "Dreams of Children")that are left off, but still the tracks chosen represent a sampling of one of the best Fusion/Jazz/World/Rock bands to come along. Unfortunately, their best work in my opinion was on other labels. Even sadder that it looks like the amazing "Folksongs for a Nuclear Village" and "The Odd Get Even" are out of print! By all means, find them if you can. The harder World Beat/Jazz Fusion edge on these releases and the strong interplay between G.E.(Stinson), Charlie Bisharat and Chuck Greenberg are stellar, not to mention the excellent world percussion, bass and keyboard work. Nice of Windham Hill to provide us with their "Best Of", but a true best of will include tracks from their entire career. Even so, the music on this one still gets 4 stars.

This is a great "best of" CD in that it gives you a really good indication of what ShadowFax is all about. This was my first introduction to them and I was not disappointed!

These are what I consider the last few good records Waylon cut before the string of bad records. In his auto biography he talks about cutting these records high as a kite on Cocaine.

Two great seventies albums.......2005-05-26

The pairing of these two albums appears a little odd but many of Waylon's seventies albums had already been released on CD. Still, both albums are well worth hearing and Waylon's fans everywhere will welcome this twofer.

The first album here (Are you ready for the country) was recorded when Waylon was at the peak of the outlaw phase of his career. Apart from the brilliant title track, it features many other outstanding songs including Can't you see (written by Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band), MacArthur Park (an incredible version of this classic song), Couple more years (also recorded by Dr Hook at around the same time), Old friend (about Buddy Holly) and Precious memories (the gospel classic).

The second album (What goes around) was recorded just three years later but by that time Waylon's sound had changed somewhat. The style may be different but the music is still brilliant. On this album, the first five tracks are generally up-tempo while the second five are generally slower, more reflective. The album opens with I ain't living long like this (a Rodney Crowell song also recorded by Emmylou) but my favorites here are It's the world's gone crazy (the lyrics may seem crazy at first but the song makes sense if you listen to it a few times), Ivory tower and Come with me.

Most of Waylon's seventies albums are now available on CD. If you are a Waylon fan, make sure that you buy them before they go out of print. This twofer may not be the highest priority among those available but it is certainly deserving of a place in any collection of Waylon's music.

Brings back memories.......2003-11-07

It was back in the late 1970's and I was a teenager who loved to listen to Waylon. These songs are classic "outlaw" waylon at it's best. Back in the mid 1970's Waylon released "Are You Ready For The Country" continuing on in the tradition of "Ramblin' Man", "This Time", "Honky Tonk Heroes" and the other albums he had been doing since breaking free from the "Nashville" production on the earlier sessions (they were good, but sounded like all the other Country artists on RCA at the time)... Waylon however wanted to do it his way and nowhere is it more evident than on "Are You Ready For The Country".
This set begins with the rocking title cut then he eases down with "So Good Woman" which sounds like it must have been directed straight at Jessi "You know I've run around all my life/You could've done better cause you've been a good wife"
"Them Old Love Songs" is the third track and talks about someones wish to find a love "like people do in them old love songs"... I could go on and on, but one of my favorites on here is "MacArthurs Park". Waylon had done a version with a female vocalist back in the last 1970's but the Nashville people put strings, horns and flutes in it. This time Waylon did it his way, singing all the vocals and using his band with the trademark sound of Ralph Mooney's steel guitar taking front and center. There is also the tribute to Buddy Holly here called "Old Friend" among others that are just plain good music.
This CD continues with the lp "What Goes Around" which starts off with "Ain't Living Long Like This", goes into the title cut and the first four songs are toe tappers, one of the best of which is "I've Got The Train Settin' Waitin", but then it gets weird with "It's The World's Gone Crazy" ("the dancer's are dancin' alone/the sidemen all want to be frontmen and the front men all want to go home... just an example of the lyrics on that weird little tune)... Side two of that album showed a more laid back smoothe Waylon starting with "Ivory Tower" then the story song "Out Among The Stars" about a down and out young man who "can't find a job but has found a gun" and holds up a liquor store, then the classic "Come With Me"... there are more tunes here but I've hit the hilites on two of my favorite Waylon lps of all time and they've put them together on this one CD... What more could you ask for?

Two distinctly different faces of a legend.......2003-06-16

The pairing of these two pieces of Waylon's work seems rather odd. However, both are very welcome to be back in my Waylon collection after several years of being absent. "Are You Ready For The Country" is an example of Waylon's ability to capture that renegade spirit during the height of his commercial success. All of these songs are pure Waylon at his best, but his rendition of Toy Caldwell's "Can't You See" is, in this reviewer's opinion, the epitome of what the "Outlaw Movement" of the seventies was all about. Listening to "What Goes Around" takes us into a different era of Waylon's fame and legend. You can tell that his taste in material has changed, as has his delivery. Two stand out tracks on this album are "If You See Her" and "Old Love, New Eyes". Waylon was always defying anybody to label his music or pidgeonhole him as an artist. The differences in these two albums
is a testament to what made him one of the greatest recording artist in the history of country music. He could continuosly grow and expand his horizons, all the while making his fans want to ride along and listen. This collection brought back a lot of great memories for me. Thank's Amazon for offering it. And thank you Waylon, for all those years of rebellious inspiration.

The fact that Richard Hell and Johnny Thunders shared a stage in 1975 makes this album indispensable for any fan of New York rock. The sound isn't that great, but these thirteen performances are the "big bang" of the whole scene that followed the demise of the New York Dolls (Johnny's "Pirate Love") and Hell's departure from Television (a major part of his first album "Blank Generation" gets worked out here). Lucky someone had a tape-recorder for these two dates -- this lineup was bound to self-destruct for all kinds of reasons. An historic document.

Thunders, Hell, Nolan, Lure: the Early Months.......2002-02-17

A nice artifact: the early Heartbreakers with Richard Hell. For LAMFers, this is a must to fill the collection. For neophytes, well, come back to this when you've had some experience. The sound quality isn't so good, and the band was still teething, yet there is always Jerry Nolan to push things along, as well as Hell's weird charisma and Johnny's two-string sorcery--all in all a splendid find. Hearing Richard Hell sing "Can't Keep My Eyes On You" and Johnny harmonizing on Hell's stuff are an experience. Also, a freshly-broken-hearted-from-Sable-Starr version of "Stepping Stone" make this well worth the price.
