One of the music's secret weapons, a player whose name is passed around the in-crowd like a precious gift...
Product Description
Meet guitar legend Calvin Newborn: He played on B.B. King's first recordings, taught Elvis how to dance, and tore up the Big Apple in the heyday of bop. Now Calvin - brother of jazz virtuoso Phineas Newborn - is hot on the comeback trail with New Born, a brand-new album chronicling his distinctive mix of Memphis blues and jazz.
Born and raised in Memphis, in the heart of the city's gutbucket blues scene, Calvin paid his dues on Beale Street when R&B was king. His impeccable jazz pedigree was honed at New York City recording sessions (and in smoky after-hours joints) alongside players like Jimmy Forrest, Hank Crawford, Charles Mingus, and Earl Hines.
Appearances by consummate sidemen including Donald Brown (Jazz Messengers) and Herman Green (Muddy Waters, Ike Turner, Miles Davis) anchor this landmark session, cut in Memphis, Tennessee in mid-2004.

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Take a look at the running times:
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31
I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.
JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10
This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.
Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13
This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!
John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28
I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

The Innocence Mission have, over the course of a decade, created a half dozen albums which celebrate small pleasures, fragile details and the wistful edges of life. As the title suggests, Now the Day Is Over offers a set of lullabies. The dozen covers and one original were not all written as bedtime reveries, but it's a testament to the graceful nuances Don and Karen Peris that such a familiar song as "What A Wonderful World" can bring out the twinkling stars of nighttime with heartfelt purity. Free of embellishments, either internal or studio created, Karen's vocals are at once magical and direct. The trio has done much more than to simply streamline or slow down these selections, they've found the core of each number and built around it only that which is necessary. -- David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
Innocence Mission is an appropriate name.......2007-06-02
Not the worst cd I have and certainly not offensive. However, lacks depth, character, and content. Could be good for the kids. Bought it because I fell in love with a track I heard on Radio Paradise. Overall I could have spent the money in other ways.
Sickenly too sweet.......2007-05-12
I am new to the Innocence Mission. We have a one year old baby, so a friend gave us this CD as a gift. For me, Karen Peris's voice has the "nails across the blackboard" effect on me. She has no range and her voice is cloying. I am not expecting rock 'n roll or anything like that, but I just cannot find anything attractive in her voice. She absolutely "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," a classic and a song that I want to associate with my relatively unspoiled childhood. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.
absolutely love this album.......2007-01-12
I play this album as part of my daughter's bedtime routine. I absolutely LOVE it. Has such a beautiful calmness to it. And as I sit their rocking with my daughter before I put her in her crib, it often brings both smiles to my face and tears to my eyes.
I Love You, Innocence Mission........2007-01-04
In the winter of '89-'90, I picked up The Innocence Mission's eponymous debut on cassette one evening in a mall in Muncie. During my solitary rural Indiana backroads return to Taylor Univ., I was introduced to the delightfully solid intangibility of these troubadours of Heart, Soul, and Mind. I wanted Don and Karen Peris to mother and father me, or to marry Karen, or to be a brother or sister of one, to experience in my life the meaningful connections that in song resonated on and strong without dwindling into the inevitable nihilism that so much of art does nowadays. (Soon realized they were Catholic Universalists or something like that.)Fan for life.
And so, I kept up with their oeuvre. Enjoying the experimental phases of beauty along with the return to simple folk beauty. "Bright as Yellow", on "Glow", piqued the world's interest on the "Empire Records" soundtrack. They toured at least a little with Lilith Fair one year. I found later they've done a blatantly spiritual album "Christ Is My Hope", and that Don (genius of guitar understatement/suggestion) has a couple of his own albums out. I still need to get those 3.
Anyway, the idea of a lullaby album from The Innocence Mission is so perfectly obvious that I never expected it. I mean, she sang songs to her "Someday Coming Child" (on "Umbrella") years before she birthed!
It is as perfect as it could be. Minimal in performance, maximal in effect. (With 3 little boys, I'm a connoisseur of artfully-lulling lullaby albums. Get the Disney Lullaby Album too--no, really--Greg Diakun and Fred Mollin create real art right under DisneyCorp's nose.)
Finally, Karen can sing me to sleep--and my family too.
works beautifully.......2006-10-18
I am a mother of twins and this CD was given to us as a gift. My babies fell asleep to this time after time and it was pleasant listening for both mom and dad. I plan on giving this as a gift to all my new parent friends.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

R. Kelly early album.......2007-05-10
I always enjoyed Kelly's music, a talented writer, singer, producer, musician and performer! The guy has a gift. You can tell he was finding his style in those day, sounding a lot like GUY. I don't like the entire album but Honey Love was my favorite cut.
The introduction to Kells.......2006-12-10
When R.Kelly first appeared on the scene with Born into the '90s, initially I wrote him off as another Aaron Hall wanna-be. While Aaron Hall is a better singer vocally, Mr. Kelly had three songs which make this CD a winner the ballads Dedicated, Slow Dance and the sensual Honey Love. R.Kelly has never really impressed with his up-tempo stuff but his ballads always deliver.
New Jack Swing.......2006-10-04
In spite of the reviewers that are basing the album on legal trouble, I still think this is one of the greatest albums ever. I've seen the tape but I'll refrain from judgment until a court decides. There has to be a reason that he was charged in 2002 and they have yet to confirm the date is was taped or the girls age. My cousin is 28 5'1 108lbs depending on how she dresses people mistake her for around 15 all the time. So perhaps the girl on the tape is over 18. Anywho back to the album. Honey Love is still my jam. And Slow Dance takes me back to my middle school dance. I love that song.
R. Kelly and New Jack Swing.......2006-03-13
This is often listed as R. Kelly first album, but even if it sound like it's his thing all the way, it's actually a album together with Public Announcement, a new jack swing group of the early 90's. Well, R. Kelly is the undisputable lead singer and star but there are alot of backround singing and rapping and tne album is pretty much new jack soul from the early 90's, it wasn't until "12 Play" where Mr. Kelly started to sound like we're used to hear him. "Born into the 90's" isn't a bad album though, it does include the big hit "She's Got that Vibe" and several other great songs like "Slow Dance" & "Honey Love". Not the first album to start your R. Kellt collection with but a good purchase for more devout fans.
"She's Loving Me" is a midtempo, pretty good. "She's Got That Vibe" is an uptempo quite typical for new jack soul and extremly catchy party track and one of his all time best. "Definations of a Hottie" is another party track, about going out in search of a woman, slower pace but still good. "I Know What You Need" is simular, R. Kelly singing the lyrics and the other boys backing him. "Keep it Sweat" great song, perfect for 12 play also, feautures rap. The title track is a more hip-hop sounding song with rap and a woman singing the hook, "Born into the 90's".
"Slow Dance" is a slow number, also a seductive song about meeting girls out. "Dedicated" slow polished love song. "Honey Love" is one of the best, another seductive song that follows the trend on this album, Kelly singing and backed by the others. "Hangin Out" is perhaps my favorite after "Vibe", it's a cathcy uptempo that feautures horns!. "Hey Love" was originally a bonus track and you can see why. It's a classic Steviw Wonder song and the way its composed here it makes Public Announcement sound like New Edition. Still very remarkable and pleasant song.
Overall, This may not be the average R. Kelly album considering that it's not entirely his own, but half of the songs are written by him and from time to time it sound like songs could have been recorded for 12 play actually, but many songs are also new jack swing. This is a good album, but unless you're a major fan of new jack swing or addicted to R. Kelly music, this shouldn't be tne first album to purchase, go for "12 Play" or "R. Kelly" But this is defenitely a good album with lots of highlights.
The Male Mariah Carey's beginning ... and end?!?!.......2006-03-10
R.Kelly was at his best when he was still ridin' wit Public Announcement.
He's always out and on the radio kinda like Mariah Carey, so I think his talent and genius are sometimes taken for granted because of this.
I guess because this was R. Kelly's debut and New Jack Swing was on its way out, this album will always standout as his best to me ... well, 12-Play gives it a good run for its money.
But as far as I'm concerned, his LPs go down from this debut.
Buy this album, if for no other reason, just for the single "Honey Love"!!!!!!!! It's a 10-star song that'll get you "in the mood."
IF you haven't already heard this song from waaayyy back in the day, you've been deprived! This track is convincing proof they don't make music like they used to.
This track alone knocks any and everything by Usher, Babyface, Anthony Hamilton, Maxwell and John Legend out of the park.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful first album! I still love it today! .......2006-03-17
En Vogue's first album just exploded onto the scene in 1990. I thought that they made a wonderful first album that is full of strong singing from the California-based R&B quartet. I've since lost the cassette, but I'd definitely get the CD version of this album. There's more emphasis on R&B, but the shades of hip-hop beats are sprinkled within songs like Hold On (still a classic) and You Don't Have To Worry. I still love the ballad Don't Go and a surprise is the wonderful remake of Natalie Cole's Just Can't Stay Away. They helped inspire many R&B girl groups that came out in the 90s and they had class too in this album and their performances. Please get this album soon!
Great Debut Album.......2005-05-07
I enjoy the album still to this day. All the songs are good, but I listen a couple of songs more than others such as Hold On, You don't have to worry, Don't Go. This is a great album, which I don't planning on selling or trading anytime soon.
En Vogue WERE Born To Sing!.......2005-04-03
I never noticed En Vogue much growing up. I guess I was more invovled with the hip-hop/soul quirkiness of TLC to really notice this sassy quartet. Sure I had heard of their mind blowing "Free Your Mind" and harmonizing funk of "Never Gonna Get My Love" from their highly acclaimed 1992 release "Funky Divas" but I never really delved into their music untill now. I brought "Born To Sing" at my local used music store and I was amazed at how fresh this album sounds even though this album is fifteen years old!
En Vogue has a style that is sexy, brash and classy, not to mention their stellar vocal stylings which all four women mesh well together and never sound boring or competing. The women of En Vogue (Dawn, Cindy, Terri and Maxine) take turns sharing the spotlight on their 1990 debut and they all can hold their own.
With a little help from Club Noveau (spell?-they brought you the remake of the Bill Withers classic "Lean On Me" and were once called the Timex Social Club which had a hit called "Rumors") members Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, En Vogue captures the esscense of early 90's New Jack with their debut.
The hits were the street funky "Hold On" which features a nice little intro of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You" but seems out of place with the song itself. "Lies" was next with it's hip-hop New Jack piano and a female rapper named Debbie T. Then the harmonious "You Don't Have To Worry" and the drum machine drenched "Don't Go" summed up the biggest hits off the album and also the best songs off the album. The other tracks hold up well against the hits, such as the quirky and sharp "Strange" and the small interlude of the Andrews Sisters classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which had a hip-hop flair to it and that I wished was longer. "Luv Lines" is another notable which features some great keyboard work and showcases some demanding singing from Dawn. And the bonus track "Waitin' On You" features some sultry vocals from Cindy and a wonderful sax by late great sax player Grover Washington Jr. and the glorious remake of "Just Can't Stay Away" holds well with the original. Still there are some duds like the eerie "Part Of Me" which isn't great at times and it can be sleep enducing but still En Vogue take turns at singing lead on this one and I give them props for that. Also "Time Goes On" is verry annoying after a couple of listens especially with the repetative "Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock" it practically drove me insane at first listen!
With some funny interludes ("Party" features the girls at a party being approached by some stupid guys, it's verry funny and it reminds me of some of the guys that approach me at parties-you do want to say "NOOO!"), harmonous vocals, toe-tapping music and a sense of style and class from these ladies you will fully enjoy "Born To Sing" if you buy it. I'm now planning on purchasing "Funky Divas" and more En Vogue albums (though sadly Dawn left and the group it was never the same). A very good solid debut that makes you want to stand up and applaud!

Where it all began.....pretty good!!.......2004-12-14
Cindy has the airy voice. Dawn, the soul. Terry, the power. Maxine, the sexiness. Combined, they were one of the most well-known girl goups known to man: En Vogue.
En Vogue was spawned by a couple of memebers from Culture Club, Denny Foster and Thomas McElroy. Who would've known what a group EV would turn out to be? En Vogue is the group that most artists then and now modeled themselves after and list as inspirations.
You can't go wrong with soulful voices that all fit the bill of being a true soloist. The voices blended together create harmony that is almost unheard of these days. Even in the faster songs you hear the harmony that we all loved. "Hold On" is the most recognized song that shot EV to super-stardom. It starts with a lovely and well-known acappella version of "Who's Lovin' You" from Jackson 5. Terry leads and the girls back her up well, and then Cindy throws down on the rest of the leads. Cindy also leads on the classic "You Don't Have To Worry", another hit for the girls. All of the girls share leads on the tight New Jack Swing song "Lies", which also has a cameo from a relatively unknown Debbie T (those of you with ears to the underground know her, mainstream America doesn't). The song flows effervescently. Also worth mentioning is the song "Luv Lines", in which Dawn belts out with the soul we all love.
If anything, a girl group must come hard with ballads or they will fall into obscurity; never the case with En Vogue. With such lovely-blended voices, how can you go wrong with ballads? Check out "Part of Me", my favorite song on the album. Each girls sings a lead and then harmonizes well, and the harmony soars throughout the song. This song isn't really a ballad as much as it is a socially themed song, but the girls reall shine on it. Definitely check out the song "Don't Go", in which Terry really shows off her vocal versatility. The girls throw down with this old-school type song. Speaking of old school, "Just Can't Stay Away" is one of the best remakes I have heard in a while. The girls' voices soar over Terry's leads, and this song is just a masterpiece!
We also are treated to a couple of interludes...one, a funny one in the beginning of the album, "Party" is just too much for me! lol. Also, at the end of "Strange", you get a funny interlude with Terry and Cindy talking about people. Also, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is an updated version of the classic Andrews Sister song...just listen to Terry say "uh uh, not that version" and you will laugh like crazy. En Vogue is definitely known for their crazy interludes.
The one song I didn't care for on here was "Time Goes On". I just couldn't get into it, because it really grated on my nerves after trying to like it.
En Vogue epitomizes harmony in every sense of the word. When you think of En Vogue, you think, "man, them girls can sing!". What a perfect title for this album. A definite R&B collector's item!!
Born To Rule!!!!.......2003-11-24
Born to Sing is an awesome cd where all the women of En Vogue show their amazing vocals. The songs Just Can't Stay Away, Part of Me, You Don't Have To Worry and Waitin On You are prime examples. On this album you'll find the amazing hits Hold On, Lies, Don't Go, and You Don't Have to Worry. With this being their first album EV showed that they are the best girl group ever!

Forgive the cheesy title, but a star is re-born once again........2007-07-09
In 1954, Judy Garland gave the most acclaimed performance of her career as a musical movie star in George Cukor's musical remake of the 1937 straight-up drama A Star Is Born. After its premiere, the film was heavily edited and would not be seen in its near complete form again for nearly thirty years. Judy was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, but lost to Grace Kelly, to the chagrin of many Garland fans to this day, as well as many celebrities of the day. (Groucho Mark famously called it the biggest robbery since Brinks.)
In all that mess, the soundtrack was released by Columbia on vinyl record in mono and has since never been out of print and was a best-seller for years. In 1988, Columbia took the musical numbers and the overture directly from the film's stereo soundtrack (As, sadly, stereo soundtrack masters no longer existed.) and released those onto CD. The sound quality was somewhat horrendous, but digital audio was still in its infancy and not much else could be done.
In 2004, for the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy, and Sony Music Soundtrax released this incredible new expanded remastered CD reissue of the film's soundtrack. This is the most complete soundtrack you can find and it's definitely worth upgrading from your 1988 CD release.
This CD contains not only all of the songs, including an extended intro to The Man That Got Away which was shortened in the film as well as the complete intro to Gotta Have Me Go With You, but also contains a near complete release of the instrumental score, which includes whole tracks and parts of tracks that were not used in the film, as well as an alternate vocal take of It's A New World, the deleted When My Sugar Walks Down The Street segment from Born In A Trunk, and a static-y complete version of The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, which was taken from a worn acetate playback disc - the only complete recording in existence.
The soundtrack is taken from a mixing and matching of several elements, such as acetate playback discs, the original Columbia mono soundtrack album masters, and the film's 4-track stereo soundtrack, among others. This means that the soundtrack goes back and forth from being stereo and mono. However, this does not detract from my listening experience any, and frankly, I can't tell much of a difference. One interesting note is that Gotta Have Me Go With You uses both the film's soundtrack and the mono soundtrack album masters to create a faithful listening experience, from the mono instrumental intro to the song itself, which except for a short portion, is taken from the film's 4-channel soundtrack. (The mono portion of the vocal part was used to edit out some plot-related screams that were present in the 1988 release. This method of retaining the aural integrity of Gotta Have Me Go With You was also used when it was included on the Rhino Records compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits.)
Despite the fact that this soundtrack is taken from several different surviving elements and sadly not from a single set of elements, as Warner Bros. didn't have the foresight to save everything like MGM and Disney did, this is an excellent presentation of this landmark soundtrack. The sound quality for the most part is excellent, and the liner notes are also wonderful. Garland historian John Fricke writes a small essay on the production of the film and an annotated guide to the soundtrack, which gives a synopsis of the plot and also indicates where the tracks from the CD appear in the film. Producer Didier C. Deutsch also writes a small essay on the creation of this CD release, giving notes on the elements and some specific tracks.
Amazon is offering this soundtrack at an excellent price, and I have to say, it's a bargain for a soundtrack of this caliber and sound quality. Any Garland fan or movie soundtrack fan should have this in their collection.
A Star Is Born Soundtrack Review.......2007-01-10
A really excellent soundtrack to go with an excellent movie. This is some of Judy Garland's best material in both music and acting. The power of her voice on "The Man That Got Away" is amazing. "Born In A Trunk", "It's A New World", "Someone At Last" and "Lose That Long Face" are other recommended tracks. This is a MUST HAVE for all you Judy Garland fans.
Judy at her peak!.......2006-05-30
Judy Garland's finest film work was "A Star Is Born." Because she and her husband, Sid Luft, were also the producers, it was the most intensely involving production she had ever undertaken. The laser focus of her brilliant talent was never before realized on film to this degree. Also, she had gained tremendous personal confidence due to the unprecedented audience response to the concerts she had done between her MGM films and ASIB. The love with which the live audience embraced her, brought new heights to her acting as well.
The production values of the film were top of the line and it shows on this fine CD. It's a chance to experience Judy's talent on a more intimate basis without the visuals.
A must-have for every serious Garland collector.
a "Star" shines like never before..........2005-04-27
This reissued remaster of A STAR IS BORN is a must-own for fans of the movie, and in particular those who were somewhat dissatified by the previous CD edition (CK 44389). That edition was great for offering us most of the main numbers in stereo/mono mix but was marred by poor analogue distortion and other remastering problems (though this was the best that could have been done at the time). This new edition (CK 65965) presents the entire score, including background and incidental sections as well as the cut material, in a sparkling new package.
The big bonus for getting this latest edition is for Garland's complete rendition of "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial" (without the dialogue of James Mason). This has been taken from a rare acetate master, so while the sound quality is not the best, having the number complete without interrupting dialogue is a more than ample compensation. You will notice too that "Lose That Long Face" has been newly mastered from a better stereo source (cutting out the thunder-crashes that were heard on the first CD master, and Garland's singing no longer has those violent analogue fluctuations during the introduction). "Gotta Have Me Go with You" is now presented without the screams and noises, in a new master from the mono soundtrack.
"When My Baby Walks Down the Street", a section cut from the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, has been added as a bonus track. This sparkling-new STAR IS BORN reissue is a great tribute to what is most definitely Judy Garland's greatest hour on film.
Musical perfection of the highest magnitude!!!.......2005-02-25
Was there ever a more perfect voice than the one possessed by Judy Garland? Powerful yet gentle. Dynamic yet restrained. Bone-chilling yet soothing. She had the pipes!
And her instrument was showcased at its best in the music from her triumphant "A Star is Born".
This expanded version is a bona-fide treasure with the highlight being Garland's earth-shattering "The Man That Got Away," presented with vocals and several instrumental versions. Along with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Trolley Song", "The Man That Got Away" is an essential for Garland fans, as well as those that know a good song when they hear it.
The fifteen-minute medley that was featured in the film as the "introduction" of "Vicki" to the public is another outstanding track, featuring "Born in a Trunk", "Suwanee," and "My Melancholy Baby," all exquisitely performed by the legendary talent.
Clocking in at just under eighty minutes, the soundtrack to the classic film is, indeed, in a class by itself, and deserving of repeated listening, maintaining its "freshness" after more than five decades.

No longer a super group, but still good..........2007-06-11
Nightrage is no longer the super group driven by multi-project guitarist Gus G. and former At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg, as both members have left the band, the former to concentrate on his own bands and the latter because of creative differences. Now, if you've never heard the band's earlier albums, then there is no reason why you wouldn't enjoy A New Disease is Born, assuming you're a fan of In Flames circa Clayman.
This album packs Gothenburg-style melodic death, driven by Marios Iliopoulos' melodic guitar signature, and the stomping rhythm work by Henric Karlsson on bass and new member Alex Svenningson on drums. New vocalist Jimmie Strimell of Death Destruction and Cipher System fame is a fitting replacemet, as he is capable of both face-ripping death growls and clean vocal harmonies, absent on earlier songs. Tracks like the brutal opener "Spiral", busy with an onslaught of rhythm battery and sledgehammer riffery, also contain acoustic breaks for clean-sung parts. Similarly, "Reconcile" merges Strimmell's three different vocal styles into a relatively compact composition. It is filled with clean choruses, low death growls, and more modern metalcore-like screaming. Topped by a catchy guitar motif, this song is a real winner.
If you enjoyed In Flames' Clayman album, carried by an instantly gripping melodic quality and simple-to-follow song structures, the accessible guitar theme of "Scathing" and the folksy power metal-style melodies of "Scars of the Past" are going to be your favourites. The latter is actually a number that boasts killer staccato riffery in its intro, but with a progression into more melodic territory it offers memorable licks and guitar phrases. "Death-like Silence" is also among the heaviest songs on the album. Octopus drumming, crushing bass arpeggios, and precise rhythm guitars culminate in a melodic finale, where even the suffocating death growls turn into an anthemic pop chorus. The last song, which is the title track, is a sweet instrumental based on beautiful acoustic guitars and definitely worth a listen.
A New Disease is Born is far from original, but within the realm of Swedish melodic death, it is an album many may enjoy. The production was handled by Jacob Hansen which means the CD sounds exactly like everything else he produced, be it Mercenary, Hatesphere, or Fear My Thoughts. Contrary to many fans' opinions, I've never been too fond of his production work, as I don't favour overtly compressed records. They sort of flatten the dynamic quality in my opinion. Still sonically, the album is certainly packed with energy that suits these songs. That said, the earlier albums are slightly more to my liking, as they carry Gus G.'s signature all over them.
Still going strong..........2007-04-18
Wow! There might be a lot of changes in this band (line-up) but the sound that makes this band so damn good is still there! Every song is killer & yet still melodic like you would expect from Nightrage; & yes a soothing instrumental is in this CD (like the other albums) at the end to round off the disc nicely. This album definitely ranks up with the last 2 albums the band made & I think it sounds more like their first CD which I liked better than 'Descent into Chaos'. Check this out for some well made melodic death metal!

Some of her early and IMO greatest work.......2006-09-03
This review is in reference to Yolanda Adams (Just as I am).
It is true - the recording quality is poor; however where else can you get access to these songs. I checked through all the Yolanda Adams albums I own and none contain these songs.
I once owned this on casette tape and the lyrics are far and away superior to a number of today's recordings. Restore Me, Wash Me, Signs of the Times, Just as I am and other songs are phenomenal, in-line with Scripture and contain RAW Yolanda Adams - her voice is not anywhere as near refined as in Day by Day or any recent re cordings but this adds to the aura and experience - you can feel her passion and commitment through her singing.
Here is a short portion of lyrics in one song:
People are looking for something to get into
Leaving without the Word they do not know what to do
(it is not too often to hear such truth in Gospel singing)
I strongly encourage this purchase for those looking to get a taste of early Yolanda Adams. I would only recommend purchasing via iTunes at 99 cents / song or the entire album for $9.99. My recommendation is because the quality is poor and if you are not interested in Wanda Butler then why pay $19.99 (current price).
Here We Go Again.......2005-10-13
First things first: The tracklisting on the Amazon site lists 19 songs. There are only 14 songs.
That out of the way, here we have another release by the legendary gospel label SOUND OF GOSPEL (SOG). And that is all good that can be said: the cd was released. This writer doesn't know if the record company doesn't have it's OWN ARTIST's masters or what, but it appears that none of the releases thus far in this company's re-issue catalog have been from the master tapes. This particular cd was clearly mastered from vinyl lps - and not well either. Whoever decided to do the work forgot to edit out the clicks and pops in the music (or just didn't care). Additionally, the pitch control was set too high on Wanda Nero Butler's first six songs represented on this cd compilation. (one track from the original vinyl was omitted evidently due to time constraints, although there is NO MENTION of this anywhere on the cd packaging)
On the plus side, the sonic quality is pretty clear, however the original vinyl was as well, so there is nothing gained here. Unfortunately, Adam's music fares much worse. Listeners are forced to listen to crackle, screetchy and scratchy vocals & music evidently recorded from an inferior vinyl source.
Again, WHERE ARE THESE ARTIST'S MASTER TAPES?? If the original issuing record company doesn't own any of its OWN artists' masters, who does?? (the late) Thomas Whitfield, the Clark Sisters and now these two artists are ALL deserving of so much better.
SOG are you listening??

The caliber of talent that comes from this amazing young man is mind boggling! He easily gives some of his predecessors a run for their money. The compilations truly will take you on a "journey"... I highly recommend you give it a listen; even if only for the appreciation of the talent and passion that flows so effortlessly out of your speakers and into your ears.

Benjamin Warren is an amazing composer! His music is great to listen to anytime, whether you're on the road, at work, the gym, or just relaxing at home. I recommend For the Journey to anyone who enjoys instrumental, soothing music that truly gives you a quick getaway from a hard day. I also own one of his previous albums, In Times Like These, which is also a wonderful compilation.
