Stochelo Rosenberg is one of the very few guitarists who can walk alongside Django Reinhardt, not just in his footsteps. The only other one that is close to his ability is Martin Taylor. Both guitarists have played extensively with Django's violinist, Stephane Grappelli. Try the Rosenberg Trio's "Caravan" as well, which is excellent and has a cameo by the great Jan Akkerman.

This particular CD was recorded during the last North Sea Jazz festival (if you've never been, GO!) that the original organiser would witness (he died shortly after), and it captures the atmosphere of this great festival very well. The playing is virtuoso without losing sight of the melody, and the inspiration just leaps of the fretboard. There is never a moment's hesitation as Stochelo tells you his beautiful stories. Highlights are: Bossa Dorado and For Sephora, apart from all the Django classics (Nuages, Minor Swing, Pent-up House etc.) which are flawlessly performed without copying them note for note. Stochelo has a distinct own style, although he does not veer away from Django's style as much as Martin Taylor does.

If you have any inclination for jazz, acoustic guitar, or traditional European music you need this CD.

title says it all. I own many gypsy CDs in the style of Django, and in my personal opinion, this one is by far the best one out there. Again, in my opinion, there is not ONE boring song at all , a few tracks may take a couple of listens to get used too (in my case, it was pent-up house and avalon) but otherwise, everything is top notch, from musicality, to technical performance (for the guitar freaks out there) to overall vibe. Fans of Al DiMeola's flamenco type stuff , Django Reinhardt, etc... should definitely check this recording out... I would also suggest visiting their webpage and order the videos and early CDs that are not available in north america ...

There is no CD in gypsy jazz guitar to equal this recording !!! the playing, the fire & the energy level of the concert is way beyond any of their studio efforts- simply awesome !!!! Stochelo Rosenberg achieved a standard of excellence in gypsy jazz with this recording similar to what Paco de Lucia achieved with his best recordings of Flamenco guitar... a level of virtuosity that is astounding to any guitarist or music lover... do yourself a favor & check it out !!!!

Superb Jazz Guitar.......2000-09-05

I heard this trio for the first time in a live concert in Vienne, France, last July. Didnt know them before. The first piece they played, "For Sephora," blew me away. Stochello Rosenbeg's mastery of the guitar is phenomenal. His improvisations stay true to the tune, yet are complex enough to keep you on your tows. His synergy with his brothers is also remarkable.

VERY hot Gypsy swing.......1999-06-25

For fans of guitar-driven "Gyspy Swing" in the style pioneered by the late Django Reinhardt, this is one of the most remarkable recording ever done in this genre. I enjoyed the Rosenberg's CARAVAN CD, but I like this one even more. The interplay between the three is remarkable. The lead guitar work is so astounding that it sometimes eclipses the equally stellar rhythm guitar and bass support. The fire that comes from a live performance is definitely there and there is a great selection of tunes, from classic swing to more contemporary pieces (Pent Up House) along with a few classic Gypsy standards (Dark Eyes, here bearing its French title Les Yeux Noir). Highly recommended. One caveat....amateur guitarists may be inspired to quit practicing!

The lucid and luminous guitarist Jim Hall is no stranger to the duet setting: over his career, he's waxed duo albums with piano (Bill Evans in the 1960s), bass (Ron Carter in the 1970s), and second guitar (most notably on 1999's record with Pat Metheny. Hall's also no stranger to valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, a co-collaborator in Jimmy Giuffre's late-1950s trio. On this 1979 date, the pair seems liberated by the absence of a rhythm section--twisting and turning the songs at a moment's notice--yet shows great discipline in being able to maintain cohesiveness. On "I Hear a Rhapsody," the two weave stunning improvisations around each other, while on "In a Sentimental Mood," Hall leaves Brookmeyer sufficient room for his rippling runs. They challenge themselves with Sonny Rollins's "St. Thomas," a tune that relies heavily on its rhythmic impulse, and they succeed thanks to Hall's miraculous chord work, which deconstructs and rebuilds the song piece by piece. --Marc Greilsamer

Perfect Setting for Brookmeyer.......2001-07-16

Alot of times, eliminating the volume of a full rhythm section can open up a great deal of doors for the improviser. In this duo setting, Brookmeyer thrives with a wonderfully relaxed tone and feel. His long, lyrical lines are truly enjoyable and a definite representation of his immense artistry on the horn. In fact, his extended lines are nothing short of astonishing. I highly reccomend this recording along with Brookmeyer's other duo outing with Mads Vinding.

This cd starts with a superb rendition of caravan, it is 10mn long. It is a bit unusual, as the head in is played by a sound I could not recognize at first: it was Toots Thielemans playing harmonica! Then Joe Pass on guitar plays the first solo, then O-Pete for a breathtaking solo, and the give and take keeps on and on. They switch tempo in the middle of it, going uptempo, taking it to the next level.

Straight no chaser that follows is not as impressive, but it is solid nonetheless. On bass is Niels-Henning Orsted-Pedersen, who is as reliable. If I don't mention the drums, it is because they play without any.

'There's no you' is a bit soporific. It would need the brushes to keep it swinging a bit, even though the bass line sings a pretty lullaby. Other songs are A-ok, Peterson is everywhere, playing in different styles (the block chord ending of 'city lights' is a nice touch, the locked hands parts in 'i'm old fashioned' is amazing, etc). Joe Pass does his part reliably. It is a live recording, as it name indicates, and the audience is obviously raptured.

For those who like Oscar Peterson, and/or the sound of harmonica.

salsa and jazz at their very best.......2000-06-23

the big surprise for me is to be the first to write a review for this timeless concert recording as everyone that I've had listen to it runs to the record store to order it themselves. Most Machito albums I've listened to are very tame, best described as easy, cocktail lounge music. This album, though, is in an entirely different category, with long, intense tracks that feature remarkably inovative sax and trumpet solos , backed by a tireless team of percussionists that include Machito, of course. The audience adds extra spice: it's completely wild with excitement and gleefully responsive to each culminating moment in the concert. In short, I've listened to a lot of salsa and even more jazz and I've got to rate this among the best of both categories, although, in the case of this album at least, the two categories merge perfectly.
