Vibist Gary Burton has been collaborating with pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny since the mid-'70s, and it shows. The three have a strong intuitive sense of each other's lines and sound and can enhance the music in myriad, subtle ways. Having a great rhythm section doesn't hurt either, and bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes are two of the very best. On Like Minds they have created an excellent CD: a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination. With the exception of the George Gershwin piece, "Soon," the disc features all original compositions, with considerable thought given to distinguishing each soloist despite the surface similarity of their nimble, bouncy styles. Like minds, perhaps, but each possesses a singular voice and the ability to merge it creatively with others. --Wally Shoup

Music of the people.......2005-04-23
On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.
Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27
Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting, mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.
Dominus Vobiscum.
Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.
Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30
It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.
Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.
Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.
Disappointing.......2004-04-01
This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".
Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07
I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

Great Jazz.......2007-05-23
This is a great collection of really excellent Jazz. Gary Burton is on his game.
Excellent collaboration.......2006-10-30
What a lineup of musicians. This album grabs you solo after solo and doesn't let up till the end. Reccomended to fans of fun, improv-friendly jazz.
Sheer Beauty.......2006-06-10
This is definitely a worthy CD to purchase. Granted, this is not really a 'working' band, but rather 5 of the greatest living players on their respective instruments coming together to play. Therefore, I can understand some of the reviewers saying this is a jam session. It is. But Holy Cow can these guys play! Unlike most all-star line-ups that happen in the jazz industry, where the listener can tell that there is no rapport, this session sounds so fresh to my ears, and the general vibe is that all of the players are having FUN and really enjoying each other. It's like every player is having a field day with each solo, and everyone is totally grooving on each other.
I can't think of too many other recent CD's that have given me that feeling.
This one is really special.
Like Minds, Great Talent !!!!.......2006-03-22
There is a lot of talent on this CD and while it's not cutting edge, it is very enjoyable.
Classic of the Titans.......2006-01-27
Wow! What superlatives can you muster to adequately describe a collaboration of these five jazz giants? I'll spare you the hyperbole and just say that this is a mandatory acquisition for any semi-serious modern jazz fan. No if's, and's or but's. Burton, Metheny, and Corea all contribute new compositions as well as some of their own standards. The inclusion of Metheny's Question and Answer is reason enough buy this CD on the spot.
Although my rating says 5 stars, it is actually 4 3/4 stars because of a couple niggles I do feel like mentioning. Over the years I have not developed as much of an affinity for Corea's music as I have Burton's or Metheny's because he seems to treat the piano as a percussive instrument as much as he does a tonal instrument - which is not necessarily a good thing as far as my listening pleasure is concerned. His style is fraught with rapid fire, staccato arpeggiation and chromatic phrasing that often requires more effort to assimilate than I'd like to exert. And this album is no exception.
This issue is then exacerbated by the fact that the guy who was responsible for the mixing, James Farber, managed to produce the worst piano sound I have ever heard on a recording. Chick's sound is so compressed, flat, and lifeless here that it seems like Farber was intentionally trying to fabricate what a piano would sound like under water. It's mind boggling. Again, maybe this was intentional for some artistic reason that is way over my head but it is totally lost on my meager musical sensibilities.
Even with this notable flaw, though, the rest of the body of work here is so overwhelming that it gets swept away into the greatness of what is sure to become a modern day classic by these five jazz "titans". For those reviewers who don't care for the "jam session format" on display here, welcome to jazz. Buy it right now.

Apt title.......2006-12-10
The history of bringing together superstars is mixed, sometimes people don't mesh the way you'd hope. In this case, you could've guessed Gary Burton, Chick Corea, and Pat Metheny would be simpatico. The result is as you'd expect, harmonious jazz songs. The ideal jazz for me has some blues, or dissonance, or funk, or some impolite parts. Sometimes my wife likes to call it "neurotic". My wife likes this CD, it isn't "neurotic". I like it too, it's good, but not the stuff I'd listen to 100% of the time. "Like Minds" is my favorite song. So far I haven't talked about Dave Holland -- his playing is very diverse, and he's great on this CD. This is the only modern Roy Haynes drumming I have, he's still as good as when he played on Coltrane's "Impressions".
Blissful, transcendent jazz.......2003-11-14
Not having heard the (apparently) inferior sound of the original recording, I'm struggling to imagine its problems. You see, the sound on this SACD hybrid is nothing short of ravishing, save, perhaps, for a slight thinness that occasionally crops up in relation to Corea's piano which, oddly, seems to lack the brilliance and sonority of the very best instruments. The sound image, apart from that small annoyance, is simply stunning for the rest of the instruments, especially Roy Haynes's drums, which snap, snarl, and bubble with consummate authority. Complaints about Metheny being underrecorded on the original disc, or there being a general lack of clarity, simply do not appertain.
As far as the the performances, this disc finds the players completely engaged and in finest conversational fettle. Whatever is called for--fleetness, emotion, group interaction--each member delivers, seemingly offhandedly, gracing the proceedings with a aura of musical authority that cannot be gainsaid. Indeed, the sheer fluidity, the ease of execution, belies jazz enacted at the very highest level of expression.
This transcendent disc has scarcely left my player since I recently acquired it. I'm convinced it represents a high point in the careers of all the players. Highest recommendation.

Too much lost in the translation .......2004-11-02
I've always felt like too much was lost in the translation from performance to recording with bluegrass music and had hoped that Psychograss might enable me to transcend what I'm sure must be a flaw in how I hear music. If I were a musician, especially a competent one, then I think I would not have this problem, but "Like Minds" does not compel to change my position.
The band itself is a stellar array of acoustic virtuosos and the collective talent here is off the charts. They take turns leading the fray and then regrouping as collective, and while there is an undercurrent of experimentation and eclecticism, the music sounds too much the same throughout to my untrained ear.
I think I expected either more or a different energy, such as the rapid-fire pace of the Meat Purveyors, the oddball viewpoints from the Gourds, or the jazz phrasing from David Grisman.
All in all, there are some good moments here and the only real dog (and only cover song) is Hendrix's 3rd Stone from the Sun. But I'm never going to consider this a favorite CD.
Will There Be More . . ........2000-10-20
... from this talented quintet? Start with longtime playing partners (and Grisman alumni) Darol Anger and Mike Marshall, add a dash of guitar-master David Grier, pour on Tony Trishka's scintillating banjo stylings, and wrap it up with Todd Phillps' "spacey/solid" bass, and voila! an instant near-classic jam album. The compositions all come from the various band members (with the notable exception of Jimi Hendrix's "3rd Stone from the Sun, which is pretty high energy but somehow misses the mark) and lay out some wonderful melodic foundation - Marshall's "Hot Nickels" and Trishka's "Garlic & Sapphires" are my personal favorites, but almost every track is a keeper. The unsung hero of this effort may be Todd Phillips, who shifts from timekeeper to timewarper and back on numerous occasions without missing a beat. All of these guys have their own gigs, but I'd love to hear a followup!
