In the past two decades, conguero Poncho Sanchez has emerged as the West Coast's foremost Latin-jazz bandleader. Latin Soul--his 19th release for the Concord Picante label--is a cooking set recorded live at the Conga Room in Los Angeles and Yoshi's in Oakland. This is no loose blowing session, but a showcase for Sanchez's road-tight nonet featuring the Banda brothers Ramon and Tony on bass and timbales, plus a powerful four-piece horn section. Sanchez's conga solos are seldom flashy, just rock solid. He pays homage to the inspiration of Mongo Santamaria on "Watermelon Man" and "Besame Mama" and recalls the golden age of mambo with Tito Rodriguez's "Mama Guela." He sings an invitation to dance on "Ven Pa Bailar" and turns the horns loose on Eddie Cano's boppish "Ican." The soul side of the equation is represented by a funky medley of Eddie Harris's "Listen Here" and "Cold Duck Time." --Rick Mitchell

Ruben Blades puts in a dynamic performance, recorded in New York, that shows why he is known foremost as a singer rather than a film star or politician. The native Panamanian has a distinctive take on Salsa, combining an innate jazz sensibility along with Salsa's inherent dance grooves. His band Son del Solar is one of the best in the business, following Blade's warm and personal vocals through every move with some great solos and arrangements. Several of his successes are featured, such as "Pedro Navaja" and "Todos Vuelven," and "Muevete" gets a scintillating 12-minute workout. With a little Caribbean influence in the mix, Live delivers a smooth punch with a velvet glove that will definitely rock you. --Derek Rath

Not a huge salsa fan but this is a touchstone.......2006-09-04
I have not been put on this planet to celebrate pan-Hispanic culture, but what can I say? This collection of toons makes my teeth sweat. The power of the vibe here is nuclear, I kid you not.
Ruben's output over the years has been patchy from where I sit, but he makes not a wrong move in this collection. The Son del Solar are gods one and all.
Buy this platter and feel the power.
RUBEN'S BEST WORK........2004-12-30
ALTHOUGH NOT THE FIRST ALBUM I OWNED OF RUBEN, CERTAINLY THIS ONE COMBINES HIS POWERFUL MESSAGES WITH ONE HELL OF A PERFORMANCE BY THE BAND. THE ADRENALINE STARTS PUMPING FROM THE FIRST SONG AND LEAVES YOU DANCING AND WANTING MORE BY THE END OF THE NIGHT. IF YOU OWN JUST ONE RUBEN BLADES CD, THIS ONE IS IT. BTW, the first time I bought this cd, some of the tracks didn't play well on ANY cd player. I noticed that only a partial album is available at i-Tunes and that the same songs that gave me trouble are the ones missing from their list too... maybe mine wasn't the only bad copy out there
Ruben Blades and Son de Solar Live!.......2003-08-11
Ruben Blades and Son de Solar's Live! is a refulgent live album. I have the tape version containing an extra track on it-Patria. Son de Solar sounded remarkably well. It is not surprising since Son de Solar is one of the best concomitant bands Blades can have: Marc Quiñones and Izbarra-I misspelled his name but nevertheless one of the best timbaleros in Latin jazz-taking care of the rhythm section.
Live! segues through most of Blades' Elektra -post- FANIA days repertoire starting with Decisiones and with the denouement of laudatory live renditions of Patria- cassette version only- and Muevete. The latter is a Los Van Van song showing Blades' openness to the seemingly modern and `electric' Cuban rumba. Blades' sonero voice is timeless as usual. The downside is that Live! seems to come up short and that might be explained because it is missing FANIA classics- except for Pedro Navaja. Notwithstanding, even without the FANIA classics, this album is filled with worth post-FANIA exemplars.
Virgilio Krumbacher
great!.......2001-04-05
Captures his unique brand of salsa. The "Decisiones" alone is worth the price of admission to this gig. Ruben Blades is a PANAMANIAN!!

Album Description
In between studio efforts, the band released WAR Live, a double LP documenting the dazzling dynamic synergy the band's concerts were renowned for. Recorded during a four-night engagement at Chicago's High Chapparral club, the set includes classic WAR favorites such as "Slippin' Into Darkness," "All Day Music" and "Get Down" in their original long form, as well as the previously unrecorded "Ballero," a fiery Latin jam that reached #33 on the pop and #17 on R&B singles charts. WAR Live continued the band's commercial success, eventually selling a million and a half copies.
Customer Reviews:
GOOD ALBUM, BUT RIP-OFF FORMAT.......2006-10-20
I hate it when greedy record companies do this:
The total track time of both discs runs under 78 minutes. So, this album could have been consolidated onto one disc, with no editing, and released at a one-disc price.
Jack Webb & the Rookies .......2006-04-08
Captured live in Chicago IL, this is documentation of War in peak form on stage in support of 1972's "The World Is A Ghetto". Live went on to produce another top 40 hit (Ballaro) in 1974. This, during a time when live LP's didn't usually produce hits. Released as a double LP (their fist since 1970's Black-Man's Burdon) Live would eventually sell over a million copies and give War their fourth gold record in a row.
War Live (after one listen, one can't help but think why Burdon parted ways with War) is proof of the animals they could be on stage with their tribute to Cook County's finest (militant fashion), in the show stopping long version of Get Down. Slippin Into Darkness is also performed with even more intensity than it was in the studio. They offer up other hits as well like the classic The Cisco Kid and Sun Oh Son. This is a must have release, a great live performance.

This is one of War's best!.......2006-01-11
One of War's great works...live in concert. If you never saw War in person--this album is filled with excellent songs, sung with an intimacy that makes you feel as if you are a member of the live audience at the funkiest show ever! A show you will never forget!!! Music, voice, quality is excellent, the CD is claiming to be a remaster.
War Live.......2005-09-04
Always been a big War fan. However this album was a disappointment. Didn't realize it was recorded back in the 70's. Just didn't get anywhere near the studio grooves. I realize it's a live album but it still doesn't do justice to any of the material you're used to hearing.
Absolute Classic !!!.......2003-06-29
Having been familiar with War from some of their commercial hits(Lowrider, etc.), I was curious when I came across this album on vinyl at a used record shop about ten years ago. Being a lover of live music I bought the album and hastily went home and dropped it on my turntable. This one of the most powerfully played live sets ever made. "Cisco Kid" and "Slipping Into Darkness" give listeners a dose of thick basslines and excellent instrumentation, purely high intensity funk/rock at its best. These two songs both exceed ten minutes in length and are worth the price of purchasing the CD alone. That being said, the shorter songs can't quite measure up, but they make for good listening none the less(check out "All Day Music"). The decade of the 70's brought us some great live albums by artists like Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, and B.B. King. This album easily ranks among them.

Lovers Live (DVD)
Sade fans may experience a range of emotions while watching the first-rate Lovers Live, but one thing they won't feel is shortchanged--not with nearly two hours of concert footage, 22 songs (including almost all of her Lovers Rock album), and DVD bonus features galore. That sultry, soulful Sade sound is in full effect throughout the concert (filmed at two Southern California locations in 2001), brought to life by a capable band, some superbly evocative visuals and sound effects, and, of course, the singer herself. The show is dramatic, but never overly theatrical; best of all, Sade, while perhaps not the world's greatest performer, is an adult--you'll find no pop-princess posing here. Of the nine songs from Lovers Rock, "Slave Song" and "Immigrant" are especially moving, revealing that Sade added some new flavors to her sound during her protracted layoff from performing. This show is pure Sade--and that's a good thing. --Sam Graham
Lovers Rock (CD)
Sade's brand of elegant pop/R&B owned the charts in the '80s, making the Nigerian/British chanteuse one of those artists whose very name becomes the adjective to describe their sound. After an eight-year layoff, Sade and her core band (and longtime producer Mike Pela) are back with a CD that is both a stunning reaffirmation of her artistry and a solid soulful collection. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Lovers Rock is that it picks up where Sade left off, which means you will hear no cool beats or hot hired hands or hip-hop cameos. This is Sade music, and on the first single, "By Your Side," she glides back into the spotlight on gentle, countryish, sparse wings--singing, once again, about love's power to redeem. Of course, Sade knows that love can stink: listen to the dub-riddim-tinged "Every Word" and cry tears of recognition. Decidedly female but utterly universal, grown up yet not hardened, Lovers Rock ranks as one of the best of the year, and marks the return of a true original. --Amy Linden

Good deal sometimes.......2006-04-12
These discs are sold in many different ways. You can buy them separately. You can buy as they are sold here, as a CD with a bonus DVD in a standard CD jewel case. Or you can buy it as a DVD with a bonus CD in a standard DVD box. The prices on all keep changing. So, you should check all the options to see which is the best value. Lovers Live is also available on audio CD but does not include all of the songs.
THE DVD RATES ABOUT 4 STARS AND THE CD ABOUT 2 STARS.
This is one of the best filmed and edited concert DVDs to come out in the last few years. Most concert DVDs are filmed with inadequate lighting and with bad camera angles. The editing can be especially bad, with the scenes constantly flipping, the cameras always zooming in and out, and the wrong person being shown at the wrong time.
The filming and lighting of this DVD is extremely good. The camera angles and close ups are great. The editing is fairly good, but not as good as some classics, like Stop Making Sense. For the most part, the scene focuses on the correct musician at the correct time. The shots are held for more than 2 seconds. There still is a little too much flipping around in some parts, like during the encore. The shot never holds long enough for you to get a clear picture of the new outfit and hairdo Sade has just changed into.
The extras on this DVD are not very significant. There are shots of Sade and the band walking from backstage up to the stage. And then there is a section of inane interviews of fans.
This is the concert tour to support Sade's Lovers Rock CD. So, there are many songs from that album. Much of the music at this concert is played in the style of Lovers Rock, even most of her old classic songs.
I prefer Sade's original sound to what she is doing today. It is a subtle change, but I don't think the new sound makes the best of her voice and talents.
The sound is a starker, muted sound backed by a rhythm that almost sounds like an electronic drum machine. Her vocals are whispered in popish way. I prefer the old days where she a lusher, but more jazz oriented sound. However, I also like a couple of the new tracks on Lovers Rock that are blues oriented.
For anyone who loves Sade, especially her more recent sound, this is a fantastic concert DVD. You couldn't ask for more.
THIS CD DOES NOT MAKE THE MOST OF SADE'S VOICE OR SONG WRITING.
The CD, originally released in 2000, contains 11 studio recorded tracks. It is 44 minutes long.
This is really a stark, stripped down sound for Sade, especially when you compare it to her early work.
Seven of the tracks are driven by muted electronic rhythms and a muffled background music. I don't think the sound works well with Sade's vocal style. She sings flat and without emotion. All seven of these tracks sound alike and the CD gets boring and monotonous.
The songs that are good are where she drops the electronic rhythms and lets the emotion of her voice come through, or where she livens up and starts to rock.
On The Sweetest Gift and It's Only Love That Gets You Through, Sade sings to almost no accompanyment. Here she sings in a great jazz/blues style and really lets the emotion of her voice come through.
King of Sorrow and Immigrant are a little more upbeat rockers. (they are not really rockers, but do rock when you compare to the other tracks on the CD). Here she sings with more energy and variation.
So, if she is the King of Sorrow, I think I might consider turning gay.
Mesmerizing.......2006-04-10
Tired of the bleached blonde, lip-synching, bimbos that pass for pop-stars these days? Here's the real deal. She belts out almost two hours of incredible original music without a crack. Her band is as slick and professional a group as you will ever see. And who knew Sade could dance? She moves the way she sings, with grace and style. What a woman!
The DVD has become my Friday night decompression from a week of stress. The beautiful sounds and beautiful lady are a hypnotic combination. I like the mix of old and new. "Somebody Already Broke My Heart" is just a fantastic bluesy song and sounds even better live.
I also love the CD. The sound is fine on a quality stereo system. It does break-up a little on my computer speakers and did not rip to the I-pod very well. I believe the problem is the very deep bass - King of Sorrow in particular. Oh well. If you are shopping for a new sub-woofer or tower speakers, this is the CD to bring.
I like the fact that both disks come in a normal CD-sized case, not a bulky DVD booklet.
Stop reading reviews and just buy it - the album itself would cost this much in a retail store.
GREAT DVD BUT WEAK CD.......2005-09-21
HAVING OWNED ALL OF SADE'S WORKS, I ENJOYED LIVE DVD PERFORMANCE & WOULD RATE IT 4 1/2 STARS.FLIP SIDE OF THE REVIEW IS THE CD. IT IS POUR QUALITY & WEAK FOR ANYTHING BY THIS ARTIST. SOUND IS ALMOST MUTED & UNLIKE ALL OTHER SADE WORKS THAT I PLAY OVER & OVER, I WILL NOT WASTE MY TIME LISTENING TO THIS ONE AGAIN.
great dvd but awful cd.......2005-07-15
the dvd is without flaw but heads up on the cd as the sound reproduction is warped. you're better off buying the dvd and cd separately.
Best Sade Video Ever.......2004-08-19
The Lovers Live Sade video is her best ever. Not only is the band and the singer on fire, the video itself is marvelous. Great lighting, great sound, great setting. Entertainment doesn't get any better than this!

Pretty Hot Cold Blood.......2005-05-16
This is one of those weird small label releases. Mono. Virually nothing in the way of liner notes. From the sound of it, I am guessing this was one of those KSAN live-in-the-studio broadcasts. The audio is good for the time, although on "Funky On My Back", towards the end, the sound abruptly goes lo-fi, and stays that way for the rest of the CD.
If you are a Cold Blood fan, you will probably want this.
Flashes Of Brilliance.......2003-04-07
Intonation good. Drugs bad. Nothing a piano tuner, an outside producer & a couple of days to clean up couldn't fix. I was gonna write "for hardcores only", but I'm a hardcore 'Blood fan & this pretty much just made me sad. Can't blame Gaylord Birch though, who's skin-tight throughout.
I WANT THERE BEST EVER ALBUM 'THILLER''.......2003-01-06

Cold Blood - Tight, Funky, & (finally) LIVE!!!.......2002-05-10
I have been a fan of Cold Blood since their great debut LP in 1969. Luckily I saw them once at the Eastowne Ballroom in Detroit 1971. They were the opening act of a 3 band show. After the bands intro instrumental "Shop Talk", vocalist Lydia Pense became the focus of the stage. She was vocally loose, and very stage active! Behind her the rhythm section cooked. Keyboardist Raul Matute purred his Hammond, Bass man Rod Ellicott oddly played a funky Hofner (beatle) bass. Their horn section was very tight, adding punch to every song, very well arranged. I walked out that night loving every minute of their set, and much bigger fan than before. I bought all of their subsequent LP's, and hoped to see them play again soon. This small label 1973 sound board recording on DIG Music brings me back to that evening. Although this CD offers only 5 songs (40+ minutes) with minimal audience (no mention of the recording date or location), Cold Blood plays all the songs with pure Funk and Fire! The songs have added vitality "Live", vocals in key, horns are crisp, nothing sounds tired! No, this is not one of those "We have played these songs for WAAAAY too many years, and sorry, we are only here for the money" sets. Lydia's Voice sounds great, she is loose, and hits some astonishingly high notes. On this "One of a kind" release, Cold Blood is enjoying the music that is truly their own. A blend of Lydia soulful voice, and pure Stax arrangements. Oddly nothing here sounds outdated almost 30 years later! How they ever came out of the bay area I will never completely understand? The only negatives of this CD release are the short set, and mono recording (Hopefully they can expand on the length of this CD release). It is however truly a document of their early 70's "Live" shows. So for anyone who enjoyed Cold Blood, you will LOVE this dream CD! Unfortunately I never saw them again live, but with this CD they confirm exactly what I heard that night 3 decades ago. The tightest 70's Soul Band west of the Mississippi!

Freewheeling Grooves!!.......2006-12-09
I am very happy as I listen to this concert CD. These 4 dear old friends of mine whom I've never met, but who've met me on a soul level, are touching me once again. They need not speak to me through classic funk anthems, or power chords and screams. They are in their 60's and I in my mid 40's. Any true Mandrill fan loved the "Composite Truth" album for it's sensitive and exuberant quality with songs like "Hang Loose", "Fencewalk" or "Don't Mess With People". This CD reminds me very much of that period. Yes, the show leans toward the mellow side - but it is never boring or bland. It is as thoughtful, elegant, and classy as the Wilson Brothers themselves. It does not have the constant throbbing keyboards of Coffee Cave, or the majestic bouncing bass lines of Fudgie Kae Solomon. And so we have the Wilson Brothers, with a exceptional group of musicans, playing beautiful, thoughtful Mandrill compositions. This is music to love and cherish. It's all about growing old with dear friends whom you loved when you were younger. We allow them to create and explore and entertain us. Listen to a lot of today's music and than listen to this disc again. It's wonderfully unique, and in a strange way, quite relevant to indie music fans. It is certainly adult alternative heaven.

This gives you a little taste of it all. The music really makes you want to get up and dance. the rhythems captivate you while your body moves. Latin Legends Live is wonderful, not just for the ones that were listening to these songs while they were growing up, but also for the younger generation to enjoy. Many may think the young ones have no taste for real music with all the stuff coming out in the 90's, but many of us do listen to the classics and this is one that i believe the young and the old can relate to and enjoy.
