Byrd devoted this album to the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1965, at the crest of the bossa nova wave. Byrd had been among the first American musicians, along with Jim Hall and Kenny Dorham, to encounter the Brazilian beat, and there's a sure grasp of the idiom, particularly well suited to his classical guitar. Along with Jobim's best-known compositions like "Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado," Byrd plays rarer, contemporaneous treasures like the beautiful "O Amor Em Paz" and "As Praias Desertas," unfolding their melodies with loving care and subtle embellishment. The string and big band settings are tasteful and unobtrusive, a pleasant backdrop for the essential dialogue between Byrd's guitar and Jobim's songs. --Stuart Broomer

Guitarist Charlie Byrd was invited to travel and play in Brazil during a cultural goodwill tour sponsored by the Kennedy administration in 1961. He was completely enamoured by the music, and when he returned, he headed straight for the recording studio to make the now classic Jazz Samba. Collaborating with Stan Getz on tenor sax and backed by a band that included Gene Byrd (bass, guitar), Keter Betts (bass), and Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach (drums), Byrd forged a new and brilliant sound. American record companies were to churn out hundreds of watered bossa-pop albums that have since given the style its lounge-addled image, but this album stands as a tribute to the vitality and adaptability of jazz. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Bossa nova music that dips, swings, boasts fine harmonic structures--and an infectious rhythmic pulse !!!.......2007-06-19

Bossa nova music was created largely by Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When Charlie Byrd and his trio heard it, they wanted to make a bossa nova album of their own. The result is this wonderful CD.

The CD track set opens with an extended version of "Desafinado." The guitar gets plenty of air time in bossa nova music; and Charlie Byrd's guitar solo stuns me with its beauty and sensitivity. "Desafinado" plays with a few key changes to enhance the quality of the number; and the percussion works very well, too.

"Samba Dees Days" picks up the tempo considerably; and this ought to brighten any party you play this at! Stan Getz plays tenor sax to perfection; and Buddy Deppenschmidt along with Bill Reichenbach play the drums very, very well. "Samba Triste" is the only truly mournful sounding samba on this album; the minor keys work very well as Stan's melancholy solo enhances the forlorn flavor to "Samba Triste."

"Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)" exudes elegance and style; when you listen to this track the fusion of jazz and samba is very evident. "E Luxo Só" reverts to a faster tempo that really makes you want to get up and dance wherever you are; and "Bahia (Baía)" concludes the album with a silky elegance that is singularly beautiful.

There is one extra number. The bonus track is the 45 rpm issue of "Desafinado." Naturally, the shorter version of this number doesn't provide us with the luxurious meanderings of the full length track. Nevertheless, it interests the listener to hear what the band chose to include--and exclude--when, under time constraints, they had to deliver the number fast yet with all the brightness of the full rendition. You won't be disappointed.

The liner notes include the original liner notes by Dom Cerulli; and there are great black and white photos of the band members playing. John Litweiler contributes an informative essay about the creation of the album as well. The quality of the sound is excellent.

I highly recommend this CD for any fan of bossa nova music; and people who enjoy jazz with a samba twist will cherish this one for ages to come.

5 out of 5 stars Old School.......2007-01-17

This CD was all I expected and more. It was soothing without being muzac, and there was plenty of latin for spice. I was raised with the old school style of jazz and this really fit the bill!

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 stars if I could!!!.......2006-09-16

Stan Getz is in this sax player's opinion the best jazz saxophone player that has ever been recorded. His sense of melody is superb. He hides his amazing technical prowess, makes it sound effortless, and never gets in the way of the melody. Nobody else even came close to his melodic improvisations.

I've worn out a few Jazz Samba LPs and now own it on CD. It's a timeless classic. It has perhaps the definitive version of "One Note Samba" on it. "Desifinado" "Bahia", "O Pato" also shine very brightly. In fact, there are no tracks on this CD that are less than superb.

Stan played a lot of different jazz styles, from Cool School to Post Bop to Bossa Nova. And although he is not from Brasil, Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote a Bossa tune honoring him because his "voice" fit the mood so perfectly. Of all the things Stan did a good job on, Bossa was perhaps his forte. And this album along with "Jazz Samba Encore" are two of his best Bossa albums ever.

I'd give it 6 stars in a 1 to 5 star rating system. It's a "desert island" disk.

A must piece of work in the latin genre to include in your collection; I've heard bits and pieces of these tracks throughout my life; it's about time I added all of them to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Contrary to Mr. Gibson's jottings........2006-06-03

According to information readily available in the CD booklet, Jazz Samba was "Recorded in Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington, D.C., February 13, 1962." Not in a studio! That accounts for the warmth of the recording. It remains the standard against which all else is measured.

...than this is a CD for you. Can't beat Charlie Byrd's guitar playing.

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Brilliance by Byrd, Jobim, and Newsom.......2003-08-09

I believe that this CD can be considered a chamber-suite for acoustic jazz guitar and small orchestra; and that as such, it is a masterpiece! It's so perfectly performed, arranged and recorded; one gets the feeling that Jobim wrote these pieces specifically for this recording. I guess I wouldn't be letting the cat out of the bag if I said that this is my all-time favorite!

There are actually three important musical aspects of this disc to be considered: Charlie Byrd's consummate performance; Antonio Carlos Jobim's compositional genius; and Tommy Newsom's wonderful arrangements. It would be unfair not to mention Teo Macero's production expertise as well as the technically astute recording itself; however space prohibits elaboration.

Charlie Byrd was undoubtedly a multi-talented musician; and one of his primary talents was his ability to impart the true feeling of a composition - and what un-plumbed depths of feeling are provided for him by Jobim's compositions! Even in less talented hands, Jobim's magnificent melodies and haunting harmonies artfully express Brazilian life - both joyous and sanguine; on this disc we have the perfect collaboration of a master guitarist. Byrd's lush use of the full, expressive timbre of the acoustic guitar gives us the ultimate interpretation of this music.

What can be said about Jobim's genius? And I, like many others, do consider him a true musical genius. People can learn harmony; they can be taught to arrange, write scores, and they can study rhythmic variations. But melody is a gift. Antonio Carlos Jobim had the gift --- and he did the studying as well! "Corcovado" is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written; "Dindi", "Someone to Light Up My Life", and "O Amor em Paz (Once I Loved)" are all exquisitely melodic pieces. But, I have not heard a Jobim piece that wasn't.

Tommy Newsom's arrangements are what, I think, "make" this recording. Arranging is, in a sense, a form of composing, at least a really good arranger makes it seem that way. Newsom's sense of "what" fits "where" is brilliant. He makes all the components of this session musically coherent; emphasizing Byrd's guitar at just the right time, while giving the strings and woodwinds theirs, too! This was recorded before computer mixing techniques and the sophisticated acoustic-electric systems available on any acoustic guitar today; yet the balance between soloist and ensemble is perfect! Newsom, working with the compositional genius of Jobim, and the interpretative genius /technical expertise of Byrd, created a body of work of which any arranger would, and should, be justifiably proud. This is as good as it gets!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Brazilian-Jazz !!!!!!!.......2002-01-04

This is an excellent album and I'm glad to see that is available in CD now, Charlie is an extraordinary guitarist and his rendition to Tom Jobim's songs is nothing but fantastic, it's one of those albums that you can enjoy by yourself at home or you can play as a background at your party or reunion and enjoy as well; if you like Brazilian-Jazz or Bossa Nova flavored music, this is a must-have for your collection; don't wait another minute and purchase it immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal and Lyrical Byrd.......2001-07-02

Brazilian Byrd along with The Bossa Nova Years are my two favorite Byrd CDs. Based on compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim, this is a lyrical and ethereal performance by a talented and versatile guitarist. With Byrd's guitar at the helm and a ravishing orchestra as accompaniment, Jobim's melodies sing and float. The samba is light and melancholic, yet deeply moving.

Laurindo Almeida has been a favourite of mine since the 60's (yes, I am just an aging hippie!). My wife bought this album on vinyl years ago - we wore it out. When we saw it as a CD we tripped over each other racing to the cashier! The subtle phrasing, the interplay of these masters, the choice of songs, every facet of this gem sparkles and becomes more lustrous with repeated listening. Sometimes a song or an interpretation sounds SO SIMPLE - until you try to do it! Then you begin to understand what mastery is necessary to make things sound easy. It's so very difficult to do; Charlie Byrd and Laurindo Almeida make the most beautiful music sound simple - wizards!

5 out of 5 stars Not sufficiently purist..........2007-05-10

I love most Charlie Byrd album, but this one isn't one of my favorites. The saxophone is intrusive (unlike Byrd's collaboration with Scott Hamilton) and detracts from Byrd's virtuoso guitar playing.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Byrd Revisited.......2002-08-28

I haven't received this CD yet, but I have the paper-thin albums of these renditions. I have been a Charlie Byrd fan for many years, and will continue to be.

If you love latin rhythms, if you love the sound of a sweet and mellow guitar, you are in for a treat. Every song is a thing of beauty before Charlie finishes it.

If you are already a fan, this is a wonderful way to preserve those beautiful songs, and his beautiful renditions. I am so glad I can revisit my favorite guitarist!

5 out of 5 stars Simply....beautiful.......2002-06-04

Bossa nova standards where every note from every musician
counts with no orchestra to detract from the simple
beauty of each. You will be familiar with most of these songs,
esp. those written by Jobim, from Byrd's other albums but, to your surprise in many cases, you may find yourself preferring these renditions.

5 out of 5 stars Stan the immortal .......2006-08-30

I have many many Stan Getz cds. I treasure this box set since 1990 I guess the year that I bought it. I know it by memory now, but nevertheless it always sounds fresh and superb. The quality of the music contained here can't be underestimated maybe only because it had success (something that jazz purist often do, critizise a music only because it sold big numbers). This music is something that words can't do justice. The encounter between Stan Getz and bossa nova and its artists was made in Heaven. Here superlatives are not enough believe us (believe to me and to all the other enthusiastic reviewers). It's a music so beautiful, so perfect that it flows with a divine smoothness. This music seems easy to uneducated people and they may even appreciate it just because it sounds so "simple". But it seems easy only because the musicians who played this music, Stan first, are unbelievable, superb artists. This music is amazing and really, can't change the face of a lot of your days. A lot of people allready told you what you can find here. Everything Stan recorded in bossa fashion. I only want to say that this box has inside itself a lot of happiness that the amazing music Stan and the others who played it will give you for years and years to come. Think about this, money are only paper. This box will send you shivers down your spine for years and will be a pure emotion each time you'll listen to it. What would you choose .. to have a bigger wallet or to be a happier person? I'd pay probably 1000 dollars for this music if it would be the only way to own it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Did I Get Lucky.......2002-09-20

Ran into this a couple years ago at the public library and hit the Bossa Nova mother lode. Realized that it would make a perfect gift and serendipitously found it on special sale. Should've bought all the copies I could!

This has to be one of the best box sets ever, both from a musical and an archival point of view. Since the other reviewers have described so well the contents of this collection, I only want to exhort you, the prospective buyer, to keep a sharp eye out for an opportunity to grab it at a favorable price.

In the meantime, let's hope Verve prints more copies. This is music that will never go out of style.

5 out of 5 stars Proof there is a God........2001-07-20

There is a line here sung by Astrud Gilberto (from an American song, but never mind) - 'I feel so gay in a melancholy way' - that sums up for me the eternal appeal of bossa nova: beach music cooled with sadness that somehow seizes your tired soul, making it feel warm and happy.

This remarkable set - which, along with 'the Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook', is the only CD I intend to take to my desert island - contains the five prodigious bossa nova albums recorded by Stan Getz in the early 60s: 'Jazz Samba' (the still sparkle-fresh collaboration with Charlie Byrd that introduced bossa nova to the world); 'Big Band Bossa Nova' (a not always successful attempt to combine two mutually exclusive forms, but featuring two epic classics, 'Manha de Carnival' and 'Chega Suadade'); 'Jazz Samba Encore' (an otherworldly masterpiece with Luiz 'Black Orpheus' Bonfa and singer Maria Toldo); 'Getz/Gilberto' (my own treasured favourite, a matchless meeting of four great talents, Getz, Jobim, Joao and Astrud Gilberto) and 'Getz/Almeida' (a rigorous, last gasp jazz workout).

All the great classics are here - 'Desafinado' (will anyone ever spell this right?), 'Insensatez' (swoon), 'O Morro Nao Tem Vez', 'One note samba', 'The girl from Ipanema', 'Corcovado' etc. (you'll know them all even if you think you don't) - together with some less familiar delights. What is perhaps most exceptional is the way Getz adapts like a chameleon to the very different needs of his various collaborators, and yet still retains the distinctive, emotional sax genius we know and love.

There are some extra tracks included as well, including Getz's only collaboration with Baden-Powell, some live numbers with the Gilbertos, and an absolutely blissful, happysad 'It might as well be spring', the only track I've ever heard that actually DOES sound like spring.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Nights or Anytime.......2001-01-25

I've had a copy of this wonderful collection in my possesion in one form or another for the last thirteen years. Once I finally threw out the tattered cassettes, I moved on to this four CD set. I can't praise it enough. It's not just the well known favorites like Girl From Ipanema or Desafinado, but the whole anthology. From the quiet tones of Corcovado to Stan's incredile blowing on So Danco Samba, there's something great on nearly every track. I'm only 31 and I've introduced this CD to the boom box on many occasions around my friends more accustomed to Pearl Jam or old Ozzy and the reaction has always been the same; "Is this elevator music?" But soon they hear the same passionate soul that nearly knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts in the mid '60s (read Phil Schaap's liner notes!) and realize that there's something special here and begin to really enjoy it. It's a warm Summer barbecue or any time you need to kick up your feet after a hard day at work with a cold drink. This is something with which to either complete or begin your samba collection.

5 out of 5 stars All The Great Bosa Nova Recordings Under One Roof.......2001-01-11

After having having foolishly traded away my vinyl copy, (origianlly released on 5 LP's) I was delighted to find this CD reissue. This is the only place to find Getz's entire Verve output of Samba and Bosa Nova recordings. The first disc is comprised of Getz's collaboration with the late great Jazz/Samba guitarist, Charlie Byrd and contains the classic Antonio Carlos Jobim compostion, Desafino. Disc two finds Getz in the company of Brizil's premier Samba vocalist Joao Gilberto. The combination of Getz's velvety smooth tenor and Gilberto's elegantly cool vocal stylings makes for an astonishing match made in Samba Heaven. Songs from this historic pairing include the highly recognizable The Girl From Impanema and the hypnotic Samba De Uma Nota So, (One Note Samba).

Disc three covers the Getz/Astrid Gilberto hits and includes the lovely Corcovado and It Might As Well Be Spring as well as the enormous international hit, The Girl From Impanema, (not to be confused with the Getz/Joao Gilberto version). This is the recording that put Bosa Nova on the map and caused a huge sensation from Brazil to Japan and all stops in between. As undeniably the biggest hit ever to come out of South America, The Girl From Impenema has been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald. The many other highlights found here include Getz in the company of an allstar jazz lineup on the Big Band Bosa Nova sides. While this may be too much material for the casual fan to digest, I suggest you begin with the Getz/Joao Gilberto album. If you find yourself hooked and yearning for more, go directly to this anthology it's worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie at his best!.......2000-06-09

I've long since worn out my vinyl version of this recording! Delighted to get it on CD. Great sound. As a classical guitarist, Charlie was average, but he did something special and wonderful on his down-home stuff like "Mama I'll be Home Someday". We'll truly miss this great musician.

By the time guitarist Charlie Byrd became one of the charter artists on Concord's roster in 1974, he had more than a decade of major record label pressure demanding more of his 1960s-era bossa nova successes. Concord gave Byrd--who died in November 1999--the freedom to explore the music of Duke Ellington, W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, and Bix Beiderbecke however he chose. The tribute-minded Charlie Byrd makes up disc one of this compilation. Disc two reflects how much better Byrd sounded late in his career when playing the South American music that made him famous. That's why the second half of this set is infinitely better than the first, and is alone worth the price. There's an experiment with Argentina's tango music and a Spanish carol played by Byrd's Washington Guitar Quartet, but disc two is mostly made up of Brazilian music. Surprisingly, only three compositions come from Antonio Carlos Jobim, but two are quite noticeable thanks to the wonderful soloists--Ken Peplowski's sax and clarinet on "Dindi," and Maucha Adnet's singing on "So Danco Samba." If it's more late-period Byrd you're after, follow this set with more of the guitarist's work with singer Adnet on My Inspiration, Music of Brazil. --Mark A. Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars "Concord Jazz presents awesome selections via Byrd".......2000-10-28

Concord Jazz is delighted to present some highlights from the last twenty years of Charlie Byrd's extraordinarily prolific, creative and influential recording career. With "Best of Concord Years", you'll appreciate the melodic and tasteful guitar playing by this legend that extends far beyond his obvious ground-breaking contributions to jazz history...which includes pioneering the application of acoustic classical guitar techniques to jazz and bringing the Brazilian "bossa nova" to the North American masses.

Byrd is equally at home in a variety of musical styles and settings, from bebop to Grappeli-Reinhardt "Hot Club" inspired swing, to classical-crossover, to a myriad of Brazilian music styles, putting this in laymen's terms.

Charlie Byrd was simply one of jazz most versatile guitar masters ever to come along, and we're glad he did, as Concord Records has preserved his lagacy...listen to icon Charlie Byrd and see if you don't agree..."THE BEST OF THE CONCORD YEARS"...is Great Jazz in a time-capsule!
