After studying classical music as a child, pianist Benny Green became irresistibly drawn to the classic bebop recordings of the 1940s and 1950s. The hard-bop revival of the 1980s was the perfect launching pad for Green's career, and he spent some of his early professional years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with additional tenures playing in the bands of Betty Carter and Freddie Hubbard. For his fourth Telarc outing, Green teams up with guitarist Russell Malone--the pair has known one another for some 15 years--and this set follows a series of duo performances they've done during the past decade. Both know how to swing with an infectious ferociousness, running in and around the rhythm with contrasting harmonic underpinnings and buoyant melodic solo excursions. They also share an abiding respect for songcraft, drawing from both popular writers (Cole Porter, Stevie Wonder) and jazz titans (Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Milt Jackson). What's more, it's often remarkable to hear how they can instinctively allow ample room for the other to shine. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Rarities...an absolute gem.......2006-09-05

Great album, bringing together three of the great songwriter-poets of our time, who along with Blaze Foley constitute a world unto themselves. They got together to perform this benefit for a Dental Clinic! Townes even comments that he can't get dental (or any) insurance. All three are tight and brilliant, but the most heart rendering songs in this collection belong to Guy. The man is a treasure - he plays one of those guitars that he made himself (yes!!), it sounds beautiful..the same care and thoughtfulness is present in the songs..buy this...today!!
Oh..one correction to the other review on this page: Lucinda Williams' Drunken Angel isn't about Townes, but about Blaze Foley.

5 out of 5 stars Hello, Is Anybody Out There?.......2006-03-09

I find it hard to believe that no one has reviewed this beautiful album. So I'll give it a go.
If you're a fan of one or all of these artists, you'll love this album. The intimacy of the live performance in what sounds like a very small cafe is perfect. These guys write personal songs. Songs that are sometimes very, very close to the heart.
Guy Clark, for some reason, is an unknown treasure. His songs have no peer. Steve Earle is a rebel with a cause. And Townes Van Zandt is the drunken angel and poet that Lucinda Williams sang about.
My advice: listen and learn.
And thanks to the reviewer above regarding my Drunken Angel comments. I stand corrected.
But Townes was a bit of a drunken angel himself, I would say.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet excess.......2007-02-18

If I had to define the genre this CD belongs to, I'd call it late-80s impressionist country. Fortunately, I can't think of any other CDs that would belong to this genre - it definitely has its own sound. On a scale from warm and fuzzy to cold and sterile, the guitars are all the way on sterile side, with a cold, electrified strumming sound and not much resonance. There are lots of big, crashing drums, almost like timpanis, and dramatic cymbal crashes. You also hear a lot of twinkling pianos and the occasional austere-sounding synthesizer. The total effect is like what country music would sound like if they only played it in Death Valley.

But don't let that scare you away from this album. For all its melodramatic tendencies, the album really works (at least for me). There are some great songs on here. Sometimes Emmylou and her producer try too hard to wrench the emotion from your soul, but at least as often they are successful. And when you get to the last steel guitar solo which ends the last (incredible) song, you'll forget about any of the album's excesses. Seriously, it's so good it affects me physically and compels me to play air steel guitar and dance around. When it's over, I feel like my soul is filled up to the brim and I'm ready to die!

5 out of 5 stars Emmylou is Great!.......2007-02-17

I loved this "album" of Emmylou's since I bought it years ago on tape. I wore the tape out and just had to replace it. You can never go wrong with Emmylou Harris.

5 out of 5 stars Bluebiurd flies high.......2007-01-03

Outstanding-the best of Emmylou Harris. Hauting melodies and wonderful lyrics beautifully sung. Amust for anyone who is a fan or who wants a great introduction to a great performer.

5 out of 5 stars The Sopranos led me to Bluebird..........2006-11-10

One of her songs played on the first episode of season five. I was hooked, I purchased the CD for the song "Heaven only Knows" and was not disappointed in the least. Instead, I gained a favorite new artist who's voice is beautiful- words cannot describe it and who's songs are utterly gorgeous, sometimes sad but always lovely. I plan to collect all of her albums and continue falling in love with Emmylou Harris's wonderful and unique style of music.

5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2006-04-29

If one were to ask most people, not to mention professional critics, what their favorite few Emmylou CD's were, I suspect this one would rarely make the list (I could be wrong, of course). But I were forced to take only one of them to a desert island with me, this one would no doubt be it. Why? Is it because its purely musical virtues surpass those of her other CD's? No, although I'd definitely say that it's the near equal of her best in that regard. What it's really about is an atmosphere, a spirit-- ethereal but with a breathing human heart-- that suffuses this body of songs from beginning to end, accompanied by a resonant fullness that echoes in one's depths long after the music has concluded.

Speaking of conclusions, the title track at the end of this CD, Butch Hancock's already fine "Bluebird", undergoes an outright musical and spiritual transsubstantiation in the hands of Emmylou and her band. Its instrumental coda is especially unforgettable, releasing the song and this entire body of music into blue infinity-- like a bird soaring into a desert mountain sky, crossing invisible thresholds and leaving the world of time and events far behind ...

I like this CD a lot. She's like Fiona Apple but with the essence of an earlier era. Rockin' and soulful. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-01-30

This album is great. Colleen is a great singer and the music is exceptional. My most favorite songs are: "St. Christopher" "It Was Raining" "King of Brooklyn" "Liquor Store" "Left" and "If I Died In Your Arms". I don't really like "Walk With Me" but its not torture.

4 out of 5 stars Punky lounge singer???.......2006-01-04

Too bad there are some folks out there ripping this album, because they thought it was someone else. Oh well, that's the way some folks are...

Anyway, this is a pretty solid album. Pretty diverse selection of styles... Wouldn't be surprised to hear some of this in a nice nightclub or a seedy strip bar. On a few tunes, she really belts it out! It's smoky, sexy, jazzy, punkish, brassy, b#llsy, b$tchy with a pinch of burlesque-y gurl power. Total of 18 tracks, but would have been better if they cut a few off. It's an excellent listen, but some of the songs start to run together, simply because there are so many. Personal favorite is track 2, "You Are the Best Thing and the Worst Thing". Check it out. If you made it this far to find this album, then you will probably like it.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked fun.......2005-12-30

Stumbled across this CD and it hasn't let me go since! She has amazing vocals, and the songs are catchy and haunting. Favorite tracks include Heart Sized Crush and King of Brooklyn, but I love them all! On constant replay in my car, at home, and at work.

Italy, 1987, Mr.Doctor introduced 'Mark of the Beast', under the artist name 'Devil Doll', he's created numerous masterpieces, unlike anything ever composed...

It isn't right for THIS band to use the name 'Devil Doll', Mr.Doctor has earned the name, and anybody familiar with his work will only laugh at THIS band.

A marvelous singer that I have loved since I was a child, singing the songs of his that I have enjoyed all these many years. The sad part of the recording is that the sound hasn't been reworked and it sounds worse that the old LP. It's really sad that they would issue this great recording in such a sad state. If you don't mind the bad fidelity, you will enjoy this.

Along with Kiss Me, Kate, 1934's Anything Goes is usually thought to be Cole Porter's finest show. Even without a young belter named Ethel Merman as the lead, the show's parade of hits ("I Get a Kick Out of You," "All Through the Night," "You're the Top," and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow") would have secured it a place in Broadway's pantheon. This recording is the first one to use the original 1934 arrangements, painstakingly reconstructed with the help of one of the original arrangers, Hans Spialek, and it also includes three songs cut from the original production. And the excellent cast does the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor John McGlinn proud: Kim Craswell is her usual powerhouse as Reno Sweeney (if only a little brittle around the edges sometimes), while mezzo Frederica von Stade smoothly adapts to musical theater as Hope Harcourt. All musical-theater lovers should have Anything Goes in their collection, and this recording is quite a worthy one. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Original, but not the Better.......2007-01-31

This CD is quite a classic, as it is Anything Goes, but in as close to its original form as possible. The other recordings of Anything Goes have been altered significantly with dropped and added songs. This CD also is very much in the classical musical theater style. This seems to be an ensemble piece, with big chorus numbers mixed in equally with love duets, and the occasional ballad. After listening to a few tracks, you will surely have a tune stuck in your head, but the nice thing is none of these are annoying tunes. The singers (save one) are great; the lyrics are decent, although sometimes predictable, and the orchestration is out in full grandeur. I would suggest this for collectors, older listeners, or listeners of the older musicals. This is not one for the newer listeners who are captivated with the likes of Wicked and Tarzan. For the newer listeners I would suggest getting the 1962 Off-Broadway Cast, it has a much fresher feel to it, and I prefer it to this one. Favorite Song: "Anything Goes"

5 out of 5 stars Anything Goes - Cole Porter.......2006-03-18

I'm too young to have heard this music when it was originally released, but heard some of the songs on the radio as part of a Cole Porter feature and liked them. I looked up the details on the BBC website and tried to find the same recording on-line. The only way I could get it was ordering from Amazon America, which I did. No problems - delivery within 2 weeks and (including postage) same cost as a full price CD in UK.

If you know any of these songs and want to hear them recorded with original orchestration, without anything added or taken away, and sung by very good singers, then this will fit the bill.

Orchestration is very good, nothing too lush or fancy, it just fits the words perfectly. And beautifully recorded.

The singers are all very good except for Jack Gilford who I personally thought was awful - but he only features once. Kim Criswell is exceptional.

With the CD comes a very informative booklet, giving full text of the lyrics, background to how the musical came to be written, and an explanation of the context of the topics covered by the songs.

I'm very glad I went to the trouble of getting this CD. If you want to hear Cole Porter's musical as it sounded originally, then get this!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent additionto the Cole Porter fan's collection........2005-09-22

If you like Cole Porter and/or musical comedies, don't miss this item. The performances are outstanding. The entire production is faithful to the original production. Also included is a very thorough booklet, which even has a glossary explaining Porter's allusions in his lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars A PLEASANT SURPRISE . . . .......2005-08-07

My introduction to ANYTHING GOES was the 1962 revival on LP. (Remember LPs? Remember when vinyl meant music and not imitation leather?) With it I became an Eileen Rodgers fan and remain so to this day. (Would someone please re-issue the original Broadway cast recording of TENDERLOIN so Broadway fans may hear Ms. Rodgers belt "Little Old New York" as only she can? I was fortunate to purchase the Angel Broadway CD before Capitol dropped it, along with many other fine cast recording. Shame!!!) Anyway, I like this version and highly recommend it, especially for its restored original orchestrations and for the excellence of its three leads. Yes, the Ambrosian Singers are too well trained and "proper" to sing "Broadway" and the bits of dialogue reveal how the "book" played second fiddle to the music in those days. Thankfully, this would change with SHOW BOAT, and John McGlinn's EMI recording of the complete score with dialoge - although not my favorite - is an invaluable document and needs to be in any serious collection of Broadway show recordings.

I truly appreciate the authenticity of this (ANYTHING GOES) project. I only wish McGlinn and company had not approached the show with kid gloves, because it lacks the energy and immediacy of a good Broadway cast recording. There were times, when listening, I felt as I often do in a museum. The piece of art is a classic and much to be admired, but don't get too close. And you mustn't touch! Nevertheless, I highly recommend this recording. Kim Criswell deserves to be on your shelf along with Eileen Rodgers and Patti LuPone.

5 out of 5 stars As close to the original 1934 performance as we'll ever get!.......2004-10-23

Of the many ANYTHING GOES recordings, this is the ONLY one to recreate the score as it was heard on opening night in 1934.

The later stage revivals (1962 and 1987) dropped some of the original songs and added other Cole Porter standards. While these versions play well on stage, there is something to be siad for hearing the original text and orchestrations. While no one can replace Ethel Merman's original star performance, it was not preserved because "original cast" albums were not being done in 1934. She did record some of the songs over the years but never with the original orchestrations. (Just think if EMI had made this set in the 1960s and brought Merman into the studio to record her interpretations! What a missed opportunity.) That said, Kim Criswell brings the requesite belt to Reno Sweeney's songs. Cris Groenendaal brings a pleasant light tenor to Billy Crocker's songs, and Frederica Von Stade (one of the few opera singers whose voice seems well suited to american musical theatre repretoire) is well suited to Hope's short musical scenes. As an ingenue, she doesn't get to sing all that much!

Not all is perfect. Jack Gilford was too old and frail having little voice left for Moonface Martin's number. And the Ambrosian singers sing correctly without having the proper "broadway" sound. Nevertheless, John McClinn conducts with precision, and the thick booklet is full of fascinating facts about the show, a detailed synopsis, all the lyrics and an amusing glossery explaing some of the obscure references in Porter's original lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars This is a nice album.......2007-04-22

This is a good album. It's not as good as their first but still worth checking out. Through wounds we soon will stitch, hell's half acre, the carpenter's coalmen and the times they are a changin' are the stand out songs. That times they are a changin' cover is AMAZING! Not only is it one of the best covers I've ever heard for that song...it's THE best cover for any song ever made! Outstanding!

4 out of 5 stars Gloomy but interesting art rock/cabaret music.......2006-07-10

I purchased this album after hearing The Carpenter's Coalmen on a local college station. A great song--suspenseful and tense, contrasted with female vocals and close harmonies. It's beautiful and atmospheric and certainly a high point on the album. I have mixed feelings about the rest. West Thordson's songs and arrangements are great--no problems there. To my ears, they tend to follow the same terrain as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds--spooky and dramatic. The Tale of Two Doves is another standout; a haunted waltz number that lurches and groans like an antique carousel ride--very theatrical. Other songs follow in the same vein, giving the album a nice continuity--though it takes a few listens to warm up to where they're going.

The downside though is West Thordson's voice is limited and doesn't carry the drama of the songs without relying on exaggerated mannerisms and distorted vocals that sound forced. It's a shame too, because the women in the group are clearly stronger singers and some of the best moments are when the female voices are brought to the front and Thordson is in the background. The band sounds most balanced at those moments.

I've read the group is supposed to be a good live band with an interesting show. They certainly have some cool songs to work with. As the Bluebird Sings is a good album, worth having if you're into moody art music. But it requires a bit of work on your part; repeated listening is in order to allow time for the songs to wiggle their way into your inner ear.

I first heard of Hikari Oe many years ago when he was featured on a news program. I was so moved by his story, that I went out to buy his CD. I fell in love. I am so amazed that this man who can do nothing for himself, can write such beautiful music. He is simply amazing. This is a wonderful cd from a wonderful man. Don't miss it!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Sort of a "bi-coastal romance" type thing.......2005-09-15

Nice job by these two together. I like this album better than any of their respective solo dates that I've heard. But on the used promo copy that I picked up, Russell Malone sounds like he's playing in the next room from the recording studio. I'd like to think that was corrected on the commercial release, but I doubt it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-03-06

Benny Green is one of the greatest pianists ever. Russell Malone is as well, one of the best guitarists ever. Combined they show how they can keep time without a drummer or a bassist. It is quite amazing to hear their extraodinary solos, and the comping behind each others. They react to each other nicely. I recommend this cd. Below is a cd I recommend:
    1. Sweet Georgia Peach (Ron Carter (b),Kenny Barron (p), Louis Nash (d), Russell Malone (g)) Great songs and great interaction between soloists and comping.

5 out of 5 stars as good as the first one.......2005-01-06

This is Benny Green and Russell Malone second effort together. They played together on 'jazz at the bistro', a live recording in St Louis a few years back. Jazz at the bistro is a great cd, so good that they decided it needed a sequel. And the sequel is as good as the original.

It is mostly standards, with a few pop-ish songs ('you are the sunshine of my life'). The duo piano-guitar works flawlessly: when BG improvises, RM provides a steady bass line, either walking or drumming the chords. And reciprocally when RM solos. They really listen to each other and interplay a lot. They understand each other so well, it seems the music has been written down.

It is hard to say which one to pick between this one and 'jazz at the bistro'. I did not choose, I have both, but anyone interested in trying one of these cannot go wrong with either. Some might say 'bluebird' is not as good as 'jazz at the bistro': the reason would only be because they listened to the latter first, and the former did not create the surprise of the chemistry between BG and RM.

As far as the sound comment made by a reviewer below, I don't see where he is coming from. I don't have a super fancy stereo equipment, but a reasonable one, and I don't hear any imperfections. And I do listen quite closely for the many subtelties in this cd.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful album.......2004-11-03

i've always been a fan of benny green and love it when he collaborates w/ russell malone. have most of b.green's album. love his style of playing. don't listen to the reviewer below. He gave this album 2 stars for no reason. i'm a little shocked.

benny green is one of the most TALENTED jazz pianists today. he is original, fresh, talented and will be around for a very long time.

this album has gorgeous songs - the song selection is great.

i highly recommend it. also check out his other album "greens" - that one is a great solo album. "testifyin'" is also good.

2 out of 5 stars Poor sound mars a great performace.......2004-08-13

Great sound can't make a poor performance better, but bad sound can sure hurt a great one. Such is the case with Bluebird. Green turns in another great performance only to have it wrecked by the recording engineer. The piano mics are so poorly positioned that there are severe phase problems. This isn't a subjective judgment. Mono the two channels together and you get cancellation, rendering the CD almost unlistenable. Proper phase is 101 in recording. How Green and his producer selected an engineer that can't properly mic a two instrument performance is a mystery. This has got to be the worst sounding major jazz release in years. Two instruments and the guy screws it up. Please Mr. Engineer find another occupation that doesn't require listening skills.

I would have given this four stars if the recording wasn't so bad.

    1 out of 5 stars further clarification.......2005-03-24

Actually, the problem is not really the picture, but the bar code numbers that Amazon uses for this product. Sellers must enter the bar code numbers and they AUTOMATICALLY end up in with Amazons listing that they associate with this bar code. Yes, the picture is incorrect and can cause problems with the buyers, but the reason sellers items get listed here is because the identification numbers they use are incorrect on Amazon. Clear as mud, right?

1 out of 5 stars CAREFUL BUYING THIS CD USED!!!!.......2003-11-27

Sunny Boy Williamson's "Bluebird Recordings 1938" is a terrific CD . And it is definitely worth owning if you already have his "Bluebird Recordings 1937-1938" or his Bluebird Recordings 1939-1940, because it is really Volume II of those fine recordings. However, as I've painfully found out, TWICE, while the "1938 Bluebird Recordings" are listed USED on AMAZON at reasonable prices -- what two sellers actually wound up SENDING me was the 1937-1938 Bluebird Recordings CD. Why? Most likely they were confused because unfortunately Amazon is showing the incorrect picture under this listing. While the heading says "Bluebird Recordings 1938" and track listings are indeed from "Bluebird Recordings 1938" starting with the song "Honey Bee Blues" the picture is of "Bluebird Recordings 1937-1938" which starts with the song "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl." Further confusing things is the fact that the "1937-1938 Bluebird Recordings" CD appears no where else on the site. If you're scratching your head, join the club. Both recordings are out of print, but as I've found out TWICE, the 1937-1938 Recordings are a lot easier to come by -- and a fine place to start if you have neither. Come to think of it, both CDs are worth having (And I should know, I now have three!). But not for someone who already has one or the other. What's the solution? Amazon should, of course, list both CDs with the correct pictures and playlists to make it easy for sellers to figure out which one they have, but until they update the listing, SELLERS SHOULD TAKE THE INITIATIVE AND INCLUDE YEARS AND PLAY LISTS IN THEIR PRODUCT DESCRIPTION so buyers can tell if they are selling the 1938 Recordings or 1937-1938 Recordings. or even the 39-40 Recordings. Whew! Who said buying used CDs had to be easy.
