ALWAYS GONNA BE THE ---FUNK----.......2007-03-01
LIKE A 'MUDBONE FRESH MUD RELEASE' THE INSTRUMENTAL ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE SHOULD ALWAYS BE A AMERICAN ANTHEM. WHERE THE WIND BLOWS, I WANT TO GO, MUDBONE'S GOT THE SOUL. LET'S BRING BACK THE 'JB' AND 'FUNK' DISCO MIXES OF OSIRIUS BACK IN THE DAY'S.
WHETHER WESTBOUND OR WARNER, YOU GET THE SUPERBAD IN DEFINITIVE FUNKADELIC.
Definite it's not.......2006-05-03
Especially Funkadelic's later work for Warner is being recycled over & over, often under the banner definite. It's important to realize that they mean the definite Warner recordings; none of their Westbound material is represented here. Where as you could claim to have a pretty much definite Funkadelic collection if you've got all their Westbound material, this hardly could be said of their Warner releases.
Funkadelic did much of their groundbreaking work on Westbound and cashed in at Warner, at least for a while. Their span at Warner was also when Funkadelic went belly-up. This had much to do with the fact Funkadelic wasn't a real band anymore by the time they left Westbound. It was more just one of the projects of P-Funk mastermind George Clinton, who used Funkadelic for his more rock oriented material. By this point in his career drugs became growingly more important, music slowly became second. The Warner years essentially chronicle the slow but steady decline of Funkadelic.
Raw classic funk.......2005-09-11
It doesn't get better than the Clinton P-Funk empire. Each song funkier and qurikier than the next. My personal favorites includes "(Not Just) Knee Deep", "Oh, I", "Electro-Cuties", "Cholly", and of course, the band's perennial song "One Nation Under A Groove". This label, Union Square Music, has a lot of great music and I'm going to order some more from this label.
INCLUDES THE ROCKIN' INSTRUMENTAL OF ONE NATION UNDER A GROO.......2005-03-19
Oops I ran out of space in my title. Not only does this cd have some of George Clinton's best work, it has a long lost gem: The instrumental version of One Nation Under A Groove. No! This ain't an instrumental to sing Karaoke over, you would be hard pressed to do so competing with the rock guitar solo which takes center stage.
This version came as a b-side for the Disco Mix of One Nation and part of it was in the Disco Mix. Now the Disco Mix has surfaced on cd, particularly on the Phat Trax series, but this version has never been available on cd - at least to my knowledge - until this release.
Also on this cd is (Not Just) Knee Deep.

Album Description
The award-winning Charity and the JAMband: Peanut Butter and JAM is the movin' groovin' follow-up to the first JAM CD, Music for Movement with Children. Spanning every genre from bluegrass to funk to rock 'n' roll to surf to meditative, PB&JAM hits a nerve with kids and parents alike. Your family needs this music...push the furniture to the walls, clear the floors, turn up the volume, and boogie down together! You will feel the love, guaranteed. Appropriate ages: 0 - infinity.
Charity Kahn sings and plays the blues away with her versatile voice, expansive harmonies, clever piano licks, and fabulous flute frills. The funky, folky JAMband joins in with Charlie Crocker (Daddy Charlie) on bass, Amos Glick (Uncle Mo) on guitar, and Hud Bixler (Daddy Hud) on drums to make this CD truly rock. The music and lyrics are edgy, clever, real, fantastical and fun...no evidence of talking down to kids here. And the bonus: every song has accompanying moves and grooves...get up outta your seat!
This wonderfully varied and clever CD won a 2004 Parents' Choice Approved Award, and received a commendation from Common Sense Media, which noted, "You'll want to move along with Charity or just listen to her appealing voice, whether you're young or old. Encourage your kids to dance, and make sure you join in the fun!" For more of the same, check out
Charity and the JAMband's most recent release, Rock Your Socks Off.

I've given a dozen (or more) "Peanut Butter and JAM" cd's as gifts and am still counting. It's full of silly, happy, and soulful songs that'll keep little toes a-tappin'.....yours too. And when I babysit, playing this cd is the one thing that puts the kids in a good mood and keeps the TV off without any complaints. Songwriter-Singer-Musician Charity Kahn and a group of amazing musicians have compiled a true delight for ears of all ages.

Hey!!! There's a riot goin' on!!!.......2004-09-29
This is Sly at his BEST!!! I LOVE There's a Riot Goin' On (TARGO), but this is even better, because it's PUNCHY and RAW SOUL!!! The production is excellent. Every song is ACE!!! "Trip to Your Heart" and "Run, Run, Run" sound like they belong on TARGO - they got that trippy but happy narcotic feel, like "Runnin' Away". The rest are on the GOOD FOOT!!! And they RAWK and FUNK!!! GET THIS!!! Sly was a genius, better than Prince or Michael or ANYBODY today! And his music still holds up TOTALLY!
The Product Of Genius.......2003-05-22
This album, along with 'Dance To The Music' and 'Life', comprises what I believe is some of the most important music ever in rock, soul and funk history. Every single song on each album is important. Whether the songs have blazing horns, chicken-pluckin' guitar, rich Hammond B3 chords, or Sly's incredible variety of vocal styles it doesn't matter. I listened to each of these albums every day for the year I was in Southeast Asia, and every note is imprinted on every cell in my body. Even to this day 35 years later I still say, "Sly, you and the gang are something! Keep on smoking!"

Sly's best, & a great lost album.......2002-06-20
Actually, this is Sly's best album, an unrecognized wonder, a great lost album, really. As he went downhill (from drugs), his music became simpler, here it begins at its most clever and ambitious. What sets it apart from his subsequent output is how eclectic and highly arranged his songs are. It's the late sixties; Sly is opening up his kind of R&B-- just as the British Invasion opened up the rock/pop song in general. He was a music major in college, so his beginning the disc with a minor key "Frere Jacques" was a conscious borrowing from Mahler.... Listen to how tight and varied and "Advice" and "Dog" are-- as Sly keeps the beat, but puts the tune through one change after another. Wonderful use of the different voices, distinct and blended. Two excellent touching slow ballads: "Let me Hear it from you" (sung by Larry Graham), and "That kind of person" (by Sly's brother, Freddie). Dig the insanely frantic "Turn Me Loose"-- which they used to attach to their equally frantic version of Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose." Great drumming! Great sound; beautifully produced, by Sly.
But so many of these potent songs fall apart at the end... Sly didn't have the sense of an ending. And then-- is there a connection?-- he fell apart in the end, and became a druggy shadow of the talented wizard that he once was.
WHAT A SUPRISE! THE GREAT UNKNOWN SLY ALBUM........2000-11-11
When I first picked up this CD, I did it only to complete the collection. I was amazed at how great this album is. "Underdog" leads off the set with a bang, and in my opinion Greg Errico's best drumming performance. "Let Me Hear It From You" & "What Would I Do" are lost soul classics. The album's mixing, production, and over all sound are better than any other of Sly's 1960's albums. It's a must listen for headphones. The sound quality is so superb that you will be reaching for the CD case again and again to look for the sound engineer's name. FYI - I read somewhere that the album was done on a 4-Track machine.

Nine tracks of pure genious. This band combines jazz, funk and rock and roll into a delicious musical meal. This CD is a must have for any fans of improvisational music, i.e. Zappa, Phish, Grateful Dead. They draw influences from so many differenet places that they can't be fully described by just one musical genre. Check them out for yourself and you won't be disappointed.

Ballard ROCK!!.......2006-12-02
There is something about this independantly produced CD that is just very different from anything I've put my hands on. I've had access to a LOT of unsigned/unknown demos/selfmade CDs over the past 8 years, and they mostly just fall into the "just another band makin' music" category. However, STPS (from the very first note) just has this warm, inviting quality to it that makes you want to listen more, and that's good because the CD just keeps getting better and better. The different styles that are presented all showcase the different personalities and talents of the three gents wielding stringed instruments, but it does it without being obvious or calculated. You're tempted to want to throw them into the "folk" (or as some have said "Power Folk") genre as the acoustic nature gets you into a very mellow, Ballard-like mood, but there's more to it than that. It's folk without being so rustic, it's rock without being so abrasive. Paraphrased from the boys themselves..."it's not so much Power-Folk as it is three acoustic guitars and a lot of electricity." The PERFECT description, in more ways than you could imagine. At the very least...KL5 is an inspiring maker of music. Enough that when I saw them live I knew that my destiny HAD to lay somewhere in the halls of their glory.
Which is why I begged them to hire me as the drummer. WOOT!
Buy this record.
Intimate Music For the Discerning Listener.......2006-12-01
Klondike-5 are, simply put, the greatest band you've never heard. Okay, maybe you've heard them, but only if you are lucky enough to have caught one of their shows without having bought this record. Oddly enough, this record only evidences 74% of their capacity as musicians, since it was recorded before adding "Evil" Keith Womack to the lineup of Brian Stork on bass, Zack Stearns on lead guitar, and Kevin Rosinbum on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. 74 percent, you ask? Well, the other one percent comes from the collective. Each of them is a dynamo on their own... Sit Kevin down with an acoutsic and he'll break your heart, give Zack 5 minutes to show you what you missed in all of Kevin's song, set Brian up with any idea whatsoever, or ask Keith for something "simple" to back you up: all genius.
But it's that one percent that makes all the difference, because this band is 99% music and 1% magic.
Is the magic in the melding? Maybe. It COULD be that KL5 just meshes really well. Is it in the music? Maybe. It COULD be that they're just that freaking good.
I think the magic is in the brotherhood.
I mean, seriously. Look at all the bands out there that clearly exist simply because some executive decided they sounded good together. This band is different. There is a camraderie that is evident in the music -- do they look at each other when they play? Sure, when there's something funny. They don't NEED each other to be fantastic musicians... They're just all the more fantastic because of the others.
On this record, watch for tracks 1 and 4, "Open Wide" and "Glass Alice". There are plenty of songs they've done since this record that (most importantly include Mr. Womack) sound different than what you'll hear here. But "Steal the Plain Straight" is the perfect introduction to your new favorite band.
