5 out of 5 stars as good as "The Sidewinder".......2007-02-10

Lee Morgan (1938-1972) recorded this album in 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 25 and July 1. Transferred at a 24-bit resolution from analog to digital, this 2005 Rudy Van Gelder remaster is the best version of Morgan's classic album money can buy. Accompanying Morgan's trumpeting are the following sidemen: Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Harold Mabern, Jr. (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums).

Next to Morgan's "The Sidewinder" of 1963, "The Gigolo" is often considered the leader's second best ever album. "Yes I Can, No You Can't" features some raucous solo work by Morgan and Shorter reminiscent of "The Sidewinder". "Speedball" is an instant classic with its fiery and flashy trumpeting, and Higgins plays like a resolute locomotive. The title track, "The Gigolo", is easily the best track on these recordings. Every musician gets a chance to shine on the piece.

This is music from one of hard-bop's premier artists, as significant compositionally as anything put out by Davis or Coltrane in their prime. As I referred to in the opening paragraph, this album has been masterfully restored and sounds better than ever. This album need not be restored again, minus a breakthrough in how we listen to music moves us away from compact discs and digital technology sometime soon. You can purchase this edition of Morgan's classic with absolute confidence.

4 out of 5 stars Ups and downs.......2007-01-30

If you're a fan of "Sidewinder," this date shouldn't disappoint. On the other hand, "Yes I Can, No You Can't," which is the "Sidewinder"-sequel contender on this date, fails to catch the rocking-dancing rhythm of the original. Morgan simply overplays, perhaps because of the presence of Shorter, who takes the first, overly dramatic solo. "Sidewinder" became such a commercial success because the gifted trumpeter was content to play it coy and conservative, remaining in the middle register and doing little more than "riding the groove."

Morgan is at his best on a live date like "Art Blakey at the Jazz Corner of the World" (especially his once-in-a-lifetime solo on "Justice") and his own "Cornbread" (not even Horace Silver has topped "Ceora"). I never cared for "Sidewinder" when I first heard it, and "Yes I Can" is scarcely an improvement--inspired solo work by both Morgan and Shorter undermined by juvenile, period-piece material. But give the trumpeter credit for establishing a formula that, for a while at least, helped keep little Blue Note records afloat before corporate giant EMI rescued and revived the label. (I've lost track of the Blue Note post-Sidewinder dates opening with the same tiresome formula, among which only Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas" continues to hold interest.)

For serious listening, "Speedball" is the highlight of this date, though "You Go to My Head" receives a welcome facelift and a tasteful Morgan solo by the maturing trumpeter (five years earlier, he would have double-timed it and played it an octave higher). He may still exhibit the playfulness of a gigolo, but there are signs that, had his past not cruelly prevented it, he was ready to settle down.

If you pick this one up, look for a previous edition. This new RVG remaster is particularly annoying because of the boosted treble and bass which, especially with the overplaying, adds up to much sonic ado about nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty Stands And Waits.......2006-08-10

This album was released in 1965. The same year I was born. It was around and I was around, and we somehow kept missing each other. I chose other albums over this one and yet it kept waiting...waiting...just like beauty tends to do...it kept waiting for me to finally notice it.

I was in a used record store in Santa Barbara on my honeymoon. And there it was...I picked it up and being incredibly psychic as well deeply intuitive, I knew I had to have it, and as soon as I played it the connection was complete.

What an awesome compilation of music. It just blows me away with each and every listen. It is so sad to me that seven short years after this was recorded, Lee Morgan was murdered. You can kill the body, but you can never kill the spirit...the soul...the passion of a person and you will definitely hear Morgan's soul and spirit throughout this recording. It will haunt you for days, weeks, years and make you reach for it even when think that you might want to hear something else. Trust me man, you really don't...beauty knows...it always knows...

This is an album that shouldn't just be considered for fans of jazz, but I feel that it's an album for people who appreciate music. I have a friend who is into "speed metal" of all things and he listened to this and thought it was one of the greatest things he ever heard. Is he still listening to "speed metal"? Unfortunately, yes...but he's now open to music that goes past surface level awareness and touches the hem of the soul only to be restored to wholeness/to holiness.

This album is calling you...I know it is...and it will patiently wait until you finally decide to become one with it.

Peace & Blessings...

5 out of 5 stars Prolific Lee.......2006-06-26

Lee Morgan was one the greats in the great Jazz era of the 50's and 60's. During this period he clearly demonstrated how great he was by being such a prolific artist with consistently stand out or highly rated records. "Candy, Sidewinder, Search for the New Land, Cornbread and the Gigolo are just a few to name. Also, besides being one of the most exciting trumpeters (never boring) he was able to write many worthy songs.

On this set he swings throughout and has some outstanding support. Special mention must go to Billy Higgins who never misses a beat and is a part of so many of the great records of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Tops of 2002.......2003-03-10

I've been listening to this cd for months and was glad to see Amazon have it available. It is without question in my top 2 or 3 for 2002. There are many great songs here and the recording quality is superb. The song 'THE ONE BEFORE THE LAST' may be one of the best songs they have ever recorded. For those of you expecting a cd of all up-tempo rockers you will be diappointed. But,you will end up like I did and become so tied up in this cd that this point soon is a past memory. I see this band growing so much in their musical ability and I hope they don't get discouraged by their overlooked greatness. It seems odd to me that the people of Spain have embraced this band like they have and we can't seem to give them their just due. I'm just glad I was fortunate enough to get this new cd because it has been a joy to listen to these past months.

Regardless of what you might think of this controversial comedy starring former Saturday Night Live star Rob Schneider, the soundtrack features several tracks as classic as leisure suits and roller boogie. Which is to say the 1970s never die, they just get reupholstered from time to time. Once used as the signature track to Paul Schrader's American Gigolo, Blondie's "Call Me" is presented twice. Blondie's original version is the one worth breaking out the dancing shoes for, whereas Emilia Mojello's cover is stiff, constricted by a halting beat. Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" is a first-rate call to sexual arms. "Spill the Wine" by War with Eric Burdon (formerly of the Animals) is a classic period piece. 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" mixes AM-lite pop with progressive rock to dizzying effect. Hot Chocolate and KC and the Sunshine Band are typical additions to this shag-carpeted soundtrack. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Juvenile Movie; Adult Soundtrack.......2000-09-17

Just rented the movie and was most impressed by the "snippets" of music interspersed throughout. The producers could not lose with tracks by the likes of Blondie, Marvin Gaye, 10cc, War, KC & the Sunshine Band, and Hot Chocolate.

Sure, all of the artists have had their work reused constantly, but the inclusion here elevates the film to somewhat memorable status.

Pass on buying the flick, but spend your change on the great soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome movie, awesome soundtrack!.......2000-09-06

This was a hilarious movie (note that I can spell)! The "Call Me" remix at the end had me up and dancing and annoying my buddy. hahah So, I HAD to get the soundtrack. This has some great old tunes, plus some neat, new stuff I have never heard before. Great job on this one!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Buy.......2006-02-14

First of all, there isn't a non-star playing anywhere on this disc. Lee Morgan is THE man with the horn. Wayne Shorter puts in one of his best appearances ever. Harold Mabern, who continues to amaze to this day with Eric Alexander, is inspired. Bob Cranshaw sounds as good as he does on his sessions with Grant Green, also from this time. And Billy Higgins has never had anything short of a great session in his life.

Of course, a great disc requires more than that just a bunch of superstars to show up in a studio ready to lay down some tracks. It takes mutual respect, great songs, and careful listening to the other musicians to get that unique feel of a 'must have session'. All three are here in abundance.

The end result in this case is just stunning. I've played this disc for jazz afficiandos from age 19 to 83, and every single one of them recognized how special it was on their first listening.

As noted by other reviewers, there are many other fine Lee Morgan discs. I'm especially fond of The Sidewinder. But if you dig Lee, and you don't have this disc, your collection has a big hole and you are missing a lot of fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Invigorating!.......2006-02-01

I know nothing about Lee Morgan, but I was rummaging thru the Jazz section and had a chance to sample this CD, sounded pretty good at the store so I bought it. It is brillliant. For those of us who only associate Miles Davis and Chris Botti to the trumpet, it is time to discover Lee Morgan. From the first track "Yes, I can, No you can't " to the last "You go to my Head" you get an instant liking to Morgan and appreciate his mastery of the trumpet. I mostly like "Speedball" because of the lightness of the composition and its improvisitional qaulities. It's also a treat to hear Wayne Shorter's accompaniment with his tenor sax.
I know this CD is from 1965 but I think it will keep on winning new fans like myself. It's good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The Extraudinary Trumpet Playing of Lee Morgan.......2005-04-13

Lee Morgan never ceases to amaze me. I dig his trumpet playing. (He was a gifted man! He had such chops and amazes me each time I listen to him) Along with his trumpet playing, his albums are always great too. The Sidewinder was the breakthrough album. All his albums before Sidewinder were great, but straight ahead. After 1963, The Sidewinder opened up all the doors for Morgan.

Albums like Cornbread, The Procrastinator, and The Gigolo were the albums that followed. Maybe it was Morgan's hit that inspired him to such great extents, or maybe he was just so ever confindent. Whatever it was, his albums were tremendous!

Billy Higgins invented that killer beat! Practically the only alternative beat in jazz drumming until about 1970, Billy Higgins invented that killer rhythmic pattern with somewhat of a back beat, and made the song more solid.

Yes I Can, No You Can't is the perfect explanation of this beat. The song almost turns into a rock piece, due to Higgins's intense drumming. The melody is great, like all of Morgan's works.

Wayne Shorter is on tenor for this date. He was just getting noticed around this time. He had played with Art Blakey, and was making some of his own dates like Ju Ju, and Night Dreamer. He's got a perfect sound! Very unique and warm. He adds much to the enjoyment of this cd, just like about everyone on this album.

The haunting theme in Trapped is very soulful. Some call this commercial. As much as it traces 1960's instrumental popular music, this is as soulful as can be. This is real down home jazz.

Speedball swings! I like the rhythmic pulse of this song. The melody seems to bounce right off it. The best track on the album, the title, Gigolo. It has one of the best "B" sections I have ever heard. Very beautiful, then it jumps right back to the soulful influenced blues. Clocking in at 11 minutes, this piece is pure magic.

Ending this extraudinary series of soulful cuts, is the beautiful standard. By this time in jazz, doing covers was almost becoming a lost art. Blue Note albums were consisting of mainly all originals by this time, as opposed to 1950's albums for Prestige that were mostly made up of standards and a few originals.

Lee Morgan played great right up until his tragic death in the early 70's. Morgan's albums were absolutely spectacular, and this album is just one piece of evidence. The Gigolo cooks!

    5 out of 5 stars "Gigolo" is a Cooker!!!.......2004-12-01

Lee Morgan is incredible. Every Cd I buy of his just keeps getting better and better. You can listen to this for hours at a time and never get the slightest hint of boredom. What stands out the most, though, is the interplay between Billy Higgins(drums) and Lee. On "Trapped", Lee and Billy get into this sort of groove where they're having this musical conversation. The title track has such a nice melody but it is very complex. There is a huge contrast between Morgan and Shorter which is why they made such a good front line. On a scale of 1 to 10 this thing deserves a solid 8. "Gigolo" includes some of Morgans finest playing ever, Shorters too.

    3 out of 5 stars TV Music.......2004-08-21

If you want to listen to great stuff by Morgan, then go and buy "The Sidewinder", and his works when he used to be a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messenger. The music on this album sounds commerical. A very long intorduction to each piece, little convincing imporvisation.

Like the previous reviewer, my interest in this band was piqued after hearing "Where I Find My Heaven" in the movie "Dumb and Dumber". I checked out Gigolo Aunts' videos on YouTube, and liked what I heard enough to purchase "Flippin' Out" at a bargain-basement price of $2. What a steal. These guys are extremely talented, in melodic structure and execution; they are standouts in a crowded field of modern-day drivel. Please note: This reviewer has never been partial to metallic influences appearing in music, and is extremely finicky when it comes to contemporary rock - probably the result of overindulgence in Beatles, Zappa, John McLaughlin, Hendrix and other supreme masters of a bygone era of rock and roll. If that holds any medal of significance for people reading this, then know this: the Gigolo Aunts are one of those rare gems in the recording arts, and I highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars "Flippin' Out" over this album..........2006-11-19

I purchased this album originally for "Where I Find..." I heard it in the movie "Dumb and Dumber", got hooked, and then bought the soundtrack. The more I listened, the more curious I got. So, when I spotted a used copy at a music store for $5, I grabbed it.
I was not disappointed. There are so many good tracks on this album. In fact, the only song that I skip over anymore is "Lemon Peeler". "Cope" is a great opener, shifting between light and dark throughout the track. "Figurine" is one of the most beautiful and mournful cuts I've heard in a while, although the uttering of the word "figurine..." after every line does get a touch repetative. "Gun" is a slower, punk-fashioned track, with some pretty good lyrics. I also really like "Pin Cushion"; from start to finish, a solid song.
All those I didn't mention are still great tracks and overall, this is a very good effort from a band that sadly got passed over.

Here's a new provocative sound that clearly assembles the instinctive sounds of nature and science...Something from the electro-seen that turns a night to some significant long dream from the dark ages.A soundtrack of aincent mythologies that renders the screams of chimeras, rabbitfish, monstrosa into a contemporary blend of respective music combined with the wittiest lyrics that you may hear in an electro album.
With their latest release by gigolo records, these two adventurers managed this time to break the scale with a fresh and an immortal album that shows their ability to create a sound that totally reflects their believes in mythologies and absurdism.Something about this album strictly stops me from thinking about the vision of my future and demands me to meet myself in a spiritual world of darkness and suspence, giving you the ability to discover feelings for the first time and to know what's it like to be an observer by emigrating the metalized cities of nowadays. It pushed me so good to provide myself some unforgettable moments in places I barely cared about such as forests, landscapes and natural open ereas.WITH NO EXAGGERATION,after listening to this album...I packed some stuff, left all my appointments uncanceled, told nobody about what's going to happen and drove all the way to forest that concured me and this album which kept playing continously for almost a week...and that was some turning point for me....I know it seems silly for some people but the opportunity to do something new after being inspired is priceless in my opinion.

The album is really refreshing and very charismatic with a character of darkness. It is a very warm welcome forwarded to all interesters of the electro genre. Some people discribed it as a dance album and yes it is some way...but yet,the majority of this sound is kind of low-key electro music with a high dose of bass.It can be basically defined as an avantgarde album with the combine of other contemporary genres such as experimental electronica and electro indie. For me,the genuine performance of crossover and their sharp philosophic lyrics are the two fingers that controlled this work and made some adventure out of it.. and to be honest,I can't decide which track is a favourite of mine.

Disgrace chateau : The morning theme of the 16th century playboy mansion.
Messages:The alarm of the first natural disaster.
Chimera Chimera: A top rated on my Ipod.
My Wave:This one made it to the finals in mandy dj lists including Hell/Founder of German techno label "International Deejay Gigolos."

For the fans of Fischerspooners #1,Mount Sims,Yeah Yeah Yeahs,Chris & Cosey,Soulwax,Goldfrapp,Tiga and chicks on speed...expand your circle and join this remarkable duo to it.

Get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, ya dig?

5 out of 5 stars If you buy one electro record this year, make it this one!.......2005-06-07

Why can't more albums sound like this? Maybe, because it would turn Crossover from being a great band, into a common one. This Album is proof enough that there can still be something exceptionally made in a genre most people wanted to see dead about two years ago, and simultaneously sounds less retro and fresher than most contemporary rock bands, if they were produced by The Neptunes with the help of James Murphy. That the lyrics are less conventional than Pete Burns dress sense, Vani prettier and cooler than Nico and Desmond a better songwriter than pre-crack-head Doherty should go without saying. That the Album is co-produced by Mount Sims, the Cover Design incredible as well as incredibly fitting for the music and that they have their own obscurely named cult, only adds to an irresistible dish.

Musically, it is slightly 'cleaner' than the first Album, but not tame in the slightest. It has great 'Pop songs' with 'Chimera, Chimera' and the opener 'Disgrace Chateau'. But more experimental songs like 'My Wave' and 'Bats are flying free through my head', can easily keep pace with the more melodious ones. All in all it is also very diverse, and can exist as easily within as outside of a club environment.

5 out of 5 stars A classic that influences the music of today... .......2007-06-20

I grew up listening to this soundtrack as my parents played it quite a bit. It's amazing how music you just "heard" as a child can touch you in a completely differnt way 20 years later when you actually LISTEN to it. It's easy to see how the work of Giorgio Moroder was a heavy influence on Madonna's 2006 "COnfessions on a Dance Floor" album. Listening to the two albums back to back, you can distincly hear Moroder's influences in Madonna's work. Confessions on a Dance Floor

4 out of 5 stars Some Electropop Standouts of the Period.......2005-11-02

"Love Theme" and "Seduction" rate as probably two of the best pop-electronic film themes of the 80s, and, well, "Call Me" is just downright great. Why Giorgio bothered to squeal his way through "Hello W.A.M.", I don't know. It hurt the end of the film, itself, and adds nothing to this soundtrack. "Love and Passion" - lyrics by director Paul Shrader - totally sum up the feelings of any intelligent person who has tried to live too long in Los Angeles.

This dates very well because L.A. is STILL the L.A. of this film (1980) - fun, dangerous, superficial, materialistic - so take it along on your next trip and drive along the lonesome freeways with Moroder's hypnotic electrobeat propelling you along.

5 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE SOUNDTRACK, A MUST-HAVE.......2005-10-09

True to say that Giorgio Moroder, the man and the king of synthesizers is one of my All-Time Favorite Composers 'cuz of his scoring for other movies i.e. Scarface, Flashdance, incl. American Gigolo, among others.

This album to me is bad and it's fill w/ alot of instrumental tracks incl. 2 vocal cuts from Blondie's "Call Me" (My introduction to her be4 movin' on to other songs by her) to Cheryl Barnes "Love and Passion" (reminds of a Gospel song I used to hear singing and/or playing at Church). So long story short, if u love real good music, or classical, or something that has a feel to it, this is the 1, if not for others, it's your choice.

The only song I dug from the album is "Night Drive" incl. the reprise of it 'cuz it can blow man, I'm tellin' u. I always love it so much 'specially 'nother song I luv is "The Seduction", the love theme to the flick. It's so romantic and very smooth.

5 out of 5 stars Giorgio hits it again.......2004-05-10

Indeed a great sountrack for a not so good movie. Ignore the movie and listen to this awesome music score by Giorgio. Im into prog rock but I have this as one of my great none prog albums. Try The Beach and Queen of the Damned soundtracks. These movies and the score are inseperable as well.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic Resurrects Again in 21st C.......2002-10-06

This is a classic, not to mention the hugely popular "Call Me" from Blondie(the 8 minutes+ version!). You can feel the indulgence and decadence throughout the album that echoes the theme of the movie. Very atmospheric, seductive and addictive. I remember that I could listen to this album 5 to 6 times a day.
With the remastered recording, the sound is much superb and I have already given the old CD to my friend within a second after I have listened to this re-issued CD.

Boston's Gigolo Aunts have been around since 1989, and while their guitar-based pop is always efficient, they remain unable to come up with a big hit single. In spite of its generic tendencies, the band has created a particularly coherent album that highlights the angelic voice of singer-guitarist Dave Gibbs. Enhanced by Mike Deeneen's sterling production and the rich vocal harmonies of guitarist Jon Skibic and bassist Steve Hurley, Gibbs's sweet falsetto is crystal clear and often enchanting. On "The Big Lie" the band receives vocal assistance from the Counting Crows' Adam Duritz and Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne. Balancing evocative ballads like "Everyone Can Fly" with rockers like "Super Ultra Wicked Mega Love," the Gigolo Aunts seem just one step away from mainstream success. --Mitch Myers

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful album!.......2005-12-02

When I first bought this album, I didn't pay much attention to it... I played it once in a while, but not very often- until recently. I love this album now! And I just found out that Steven Hurley, the bassist for G.A., is an English teacher... AT MY SCHOOL!!! I've met him many times, and he loves to talk about the band. He talked about an upcoming tour in Spain. I suggest this album for all ages. You wont be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Pop At It's Most Pure.......2002-11-27

I can't add much analysis to what's already been layed down, but this album shows what "pop" can and should be, without the negatives that became associated with it in the wake of the grunge invasion. Now that we're in the hangover phase of that, this is just what's needed to bring back some solid ground for popular music. Maybe I'm biased since I grew up with most of these guys in the tiny obscure Northern New York town of Potsdam, but listening to how catchy and polished this album is, I'm really surprised they haven't managed to hit it big. Oh well, it's a solid album from top to bottom and it's still worth having in your collection. Also check out Full On Bloom and Flippin' Out, featuring the song "Where I Find My Heaven" from the awesome movie Dumb & Dumber!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!.......2001-08-04

I personally give this cd 10 stars. EVERY song on this cd is brilliantly written. The lyrics are very personal and reflective on their 10+ year career. My 3 fav tracks are "Everything is wrong" (the video for this is available on www.countingcrows.com under the music/video section), "The Big Lie", and "Everything is Wrong". i also own by them "Flippin Out" and "Learn To Play Guitar". They are both good, but dont compare to Minor Chords and Major Themes. If you like them, then check out "Joe 90", a similar style of music to them. They are both on Adam Duritz's (counting crows) label "E Plubibus Unum" and both appear on the song/video for counting crows "Hangin Around". GET IT ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars power pop lives on.......2001-04-14

The Gigolo Aunts are a throwback to the heyday of 80's shimmering, jangly power pop. A couple of the tracks, especially the lush opening song, are reminiscent of the Posies. On other tracks they sound like a 90's version of the Three O'Clock (anybody remember them?); still others recall the Grapes of Wrath. The lead singer has a perfect pop tenor voice -- ranging from sweet crooning to urgent breathiness -- that reminds me of a little of Scott Miller of Game Theory. So yes, this has all been done before, but these guys carry on the proud tradition wonderfully. Check out especially the first three tracks, which come just about as close to pop heaven as you can get.

4 out of 5 stars This needs radio exposure.......2000-08-01

Wow-what a great CD. I purchased this CD mainly because of the reviews I had read online. I was a little unsure because I have the CD of their's entitled "Flippin Out" and found it uneven. There are great songs i.e. "Where I Fund My Heaven" and there are the not so great. This CD is quite another story. Solid from top to bottom. Song like "Every Thing Is Wrong" and "The Big Lie" have hit written all over them. I just wish they could get some exposure on radio. I sure hope they come somewhere close so I can catch them live. In the mean time I'm going to push our local modern rock station and see if I can get some of this played.
