When George Benson was making these recordings in the 1970s, he was considered a talented jazz guitarist who had crossed over to pop-soul vocals. While there's certainly pure pop and an emphasis on vocals here, there's also something else: smooth jazz. Included are classics of the genre like the instrumental "Breezin'" and the King Pleasure vocalese "Moody's Mood." Benson's hit versions of songs like "On Broadway" and "This Masquerade" are memorable, too, with him singing scat in unison with his guitar. In Benson's hands, Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" becomes a quasi-symphonic instrumental with touches of flamenco, and the vocal duets "Love All the Hurt Away" with Aretha Franklin and "We Got the Love" with Chaka Khan are solid soul ballads. --Adam Rains

This CD was pure George Benson. The selection was wonderful; his playing was moving; and the CD was worth the price. I would recommend this CD for all George Benson fans, old and new.

If you only buy one George Benson CD, this is the best all-around retrospective; but be warned--those of us who grew up with the album version (you remember albums, don't you?) will be disappointed to learn that "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," one of the LPs best instrumental cuts, was deleted from the CD in order to contain it to a single disc. Other than that (significant) flaw, it's good to hear the classic guitar work and stellar vocals on CD.

Throughly enjoying CD.Long time owned tape [25 yrs] had distortions & sticking problems with reels. Disapointed that "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" was left off.

Any number sung by George is my favourite, however, I would like to see some of his hits that he sings with other artists on his albums. Like the song with Gwen Guthrie its about wedding vows and if anyone knows of this number which is incorporated with any of goerges albums I would love to know the title

This collection is a compilation of the best tracks from two of Benson's late 60's albums, "Goodies" and "Giblet Gravy". The progression of his guitar playing from the diamond in the rough talent of his first few albums is just astonishing. By this time, Benson was already one of the finest jazz guitarists, not only of that era, but of all time. This collection showcases his ability to intepret a diverse set of material from blues to bop, and even popular songs of the day ("Groovin", "Walk on By", and "Windmills of Your Mind"). While all the tracks are excellent, my favorite is his version of Horace Silver's "Song For My Father" on which Benson displays an incredible combination of melodicism and fluidity. Equally as exciting is his energetic reading of Cannonball Adderly's "Sack O' Woe an uptempo blues which George makes as funky as you can get, far surpassing in my opinion the great version that Howard Roberts had recorded.

If you love soulful jazz guitar, buy this disc!
