Years ago, the Nuyorican pianist/bandleader Eddie Palmieri christened himself "the Sun of Latin Music," and with the recent deaths of Mongo Santamaria and Tito Puente, his claim to that title today is unchallenged. This CD, which translates as "Hot Rhythm," harkens back to the two-trombone frontline he pioneered in the 1960s with his legendary La Perfecta ensemble. Trombonists Conrad Herwig and Renaldo Jorge make up the frontline with ex-Art Blakey Jazz Messenger trumpeter Brian Lynch. Percussionist José "Cochi" Claussell, drummer Robert Ameen, and bassist Joe Santiago provide the punch behind these tunes in the classic, salsa-friendly Afro-Cuban tempo and mode. Palmieri's percussive pianisms swing with a groove that propels both Latin and jazz rhythms. On "Gigue (Bach Goes Batá)," Palmieri fuses J.S. Bach with Afro-derived batádrumming, while "Grandpa Semi-Tone Blues" is a catchy Antillean blues number. Palmieri's Thelonious Monk-like piano style is extremely percussive, and in his hands the instrument becomes 88 well-tuned hand drums. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

good and proper.......2003-08-07
Like all of Briton's Proper labels 4 cd box sets this offers a helluva lot of music for a terrific price! And, as always, it's music recorded in the 40's and sound quality ranges all the way from murky to acceptable and some good. But, if you are a fan of Latin Jazz, or a Machito worshipper [how can ya love Latin Jazz and not worship Machito? He was the best!], you will want this box set. Just for historical reasons, it offers pretty much a conclusive assembally, and on the nightclub recordings from BirdLand in New York, the searing heat and powerful jazz makes it through even though the one mike recordings from the radio are frustrating.

Got the CD in great condition... Haven't stopped listening to it since I got the item. No problems with the seller or the product...
El Maestro again!.......2004-01-19
Again Mr. Palmieri "El Maestro" bring to us the best piece of his artwork, a delightful cocktail of Afro-cuban and Latin jazz.
Great Latin Jazz.......2003-10-10
I recently attended the Monterey Jazz festival and was priviledged to hear Eddie Palmieri (who wasn't even scheduled). This album is a treat for both jazz and salsa fans. Eddie shows his versatility, particularly in the amazing Gigue (which marries Bach to Latin jazz!). Also notable are Ms. Joseph's flute solos in several numbers. No, these aren't all dance numbers, but they're all great jazz!
Even more brilliant.......2003-08-26
The guy who fills me of energy every day right before heading to work, has made an even better cd, more of my taste. I feel he has added a little new style (that i love): tracks 4, 5 and 11 bring an extra scent of a Herman Olivera, lead vocalist, when we listen to him right after the choir, at the end or the middle of the sentence. I love it, it's my inspiration. Eddie is simply the best, now that Tito Puente has gone, leaving him with no big competience.
Hot! And not..........2003-08-26
"La Voz del Caribe", the first track, sets the bar for this CD pretty high. A tightly arranged, energetic number with Hermann Olivera on vocals, it should get everyone out on the dancefloor. "Sujetate La Lengua" is also a great track with the same kind of drive. Both of these tracks are great examples that salsa dura is alive and well!
Unfortunately the rest of the tracks can't seem to keep up. The more "jazzy" numbers effectively kill the momentum of the CD. Several of the instrumental tracks are decent, but in order to keep pace with "La Voz..." and "Sujetate..." they definitely could have used some slammin vocals from the likes of Mr. Olivera.
I realize that Mr. Palmieri is following the old school formula of mixing in mellower jazz tunes w/hot dance tracks. The balance of this CD is, however, pretty slanted towards the jazz side. I think maybe Mr. Palmieri should have considered keepin this album strictly a red-hot salsa album, and saved the jazz material for a separate album, or at least slanted the album in the other direction!

Hot!.......2005-11-27
This is a twelve song compilation comprised of various styles of Latin music. "Because You Loved Me (Radio Edit)" by Suzann Rye seemed to throw off the chemistry a bit without having any Spanish connotations. "Low Rider (Mijangos Progressive Mix) by War is a bit hard to decipher, but it still moves as does the original version. Ritmo Caliente: Best of Latin House, Vol. 2 is a party awaiting a crowd.
