In the MJQ's early years, critics often found something incompatible between John Lewis's European classical leanings, particularly the baroque, and Milt Jackson's unfettered gifts improvising over bop-blues changes. This 1973 date is structured by that dichotomy, alternating between Lewis's compositions (based on some of Bach's best-known melodies) and a series of original blues, the first three by Lewis, the last by Jackson. Lewis emphasizes the contrast by playing harpsichord on the Bach tunes. His treatment of Bach can drift toward the merely pretty, as in his handling of "Sleepers Awake," but there's a genuine beauty in "Don't Stop This Train" and "Tears from the Children," based on Bach keyboard works. Jackson's fluent solos on the blues are a continuing delight, while Lewis demonstrates once again that he, too, is a musician imbued with the same roots, inserting a telling variation on "St. James Infirmary" into "Blues in A Minor."--Stuart Broomer

I bought the CD to replace my vinyl version, which I had not played in years, and I am so pleased to hear again the MJQ's takes on Bach classics alternating with their own compositions. This is a CD that I can listen to over cocktails and dinner as stimulating background music ... or focus on without any distractions to appreciate the artistry of the musicians and arrangements.

If you like the MJQ, this is one of their best albums; Pyramid and Concorde being my other favorites.

I'm a bit surprised to find myself liking this more than most reviewers, for I enjoy playing the CD with regularity. It is true that the "Bach" numbers are hardly "jazz" in the conventional sense, while the others are. But does this really matter? It seems to me that this brilliant and sensitive foursome does equally well in each of the two modes adopted, and - even more importantly - THAT THEY DO NOT JAR. To me, the tracks do offer some sort of unity, by bringing out for one thing the universality of great music, but also for another by implictly stressing how Bach was, in a sense, a precursor to jazz, and how the MJQ, even WITHIN its jazz formulation, plays music Bach would have found totally intelligible, admirable, and congenial. Enjoying this CD requires some lateral thinking! - Joost Daalder

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-06-22

I have to up-date my review! I just played this album, and heard that it really is a great album. Classical, Jazz, Blues, Vibes, MJQ, what more can you want? This album is fabulous. It holds its own, as good as classics such as Concorde, Fontessa, Django, and The Sherrif. You might not like this album. It depends on what you want, what you like, and what your looking for. If you're looking for like swinging jazz with a lot of blues influence, and melow classical melodies with a little jazz feel and tingy percussion instruments, then you'll love this album, just like I do. You have to admit though, this was a landmark recording in MJQ's history.

The Modern Jazz Quartet has always incorporated European Classical music into their lightly swining jazz. A factor that would turn some hard core jazz fans away. For me, I like their light approach to modern jazz. I feel remorsed after hearing an album like Concorde or Fontessa. On this album The MJQ rotate, classical and jazz songs, one after another. I was turned away at first, but its really a good album. Anyone who can swing Bach is a genious, and these four men are. Vibist Milt Jackson brings his blues playing to the classical stuff, John Lewis brings his classical into the jazz stuff, bassist Percy Heath, just brings us a bed to let Milt and John do that, and drummer Connie Kay, just swings delicately, but acts as a front man soloist with his creative use of percussion equitment and his drumset. I'm not going to point out any material, they're all about the same in value. A new commmer may be discouraged listening to this, but once they've heard some other ground breaking MJQ album, they'll come to love this album. I wouldn't hurry up to the store and buy this album, by the MJQ, but if you see it, pick it up.

Actually my rating would be about 3.5 stars. No, this is not the best MJQ material available. And no, if you're new to MJQ, don't start here -- unless you're coming to them with a classical background.

I like Bach and I like MJQ--so I had to like this one. However, I wish Lewis had done a whole CD with the Bach material and another one with the blues material, expanding each concept to a full CD of material. Each type is worth listening to and in each format Lewis and MJQ had something interesting to say. The alternating track format is, to my ears, jarring -- I'm just getting "into" Lewis doing Bach on harpsicord and we're back to the jazz/blues format. But even that doesn't stop me from enjoying the music--and it is very enjoyable, indeed.

Listening to the Bach tracks with vibes and harpsicord working the theme is good stuff! Lewis' treatment of the Bach themes is very interesting--you'll never miss the basic theme but he manages nice touches to rework and embellish. The blues/jazz tracks are stronger and begin to show what MJQ is all about.

If you're new to MJQ go get a couple others first (Fontessa would be a better starting point). Then, if you're like me and enjoy Bach and MJQ then get this one, its a natural. If you're extending a collection of MJQ then this one is worthwhile mainly because of its uniqueness.

Have been fortunate to attend 2 Chris Brubeck concerts and have been a big fan ever since. Just need more CD's please.
This recording is simply thrilling. I highly recommend you add it to your collection and tell all your friends. Once you hear his music you are hooked and what a wonderful addiction.
Here's hoping we hear a lot from Chris and his friends.

I bought this CD after hearing it on my local NPR station. I relly like the arrangements of Bach's works--not predictable--and I was certain that I was listening to a Bach orchestration at the time.

A real added treat to this CD are the compositions of Chris Brubeck. This guy can really write for orchestra. His bass trombone concerto has the gusto of a Bernstein Overture. Also his arrangement of Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo" is incredible. Bach to Brubeck certainly makes the case for an enjoyable listening experience. I have turned 5 of my friends on to this CD already.

This CD shows that the musical talent of Dave Brubeck continues on to the next generation. This CD has a wonderful mix of classical Bach, beautifully played by the London Symphony Orchestra Bill Crofut, Joel Brown, & Chris Bruebeck, and an eclectic mix of modern American music.

The arrangements of the traditional Bach pieces by Chris Brubeck are wonderfully done. The beautiful guitar playing by Joel Brown brings a new element to this classic music.

Finally there is a Concerto for one of my favorite instruments! The Concerto for Bass Trombone is a unique and wonderfully new and differnt piece of classical music. The masterful playing by Chris Brubeck spotlights his talent not only as a composer but as a gifted musician.

This CD will take you from the glories of Bach to the new and exciting music being made by the 2nd generation of Brubecks.

The multi-talented Chris Brubeck has really impressed me with this outing. I didn't know Chris before this disc, although I did know Dave, and now I'd like to hear more from Chris! This is a must-have for all classical and jazz fans. The serenity of the Bach arrangements are perfectly orchestrated, and the bass trombone concerto is a masterful composition. And the way the Blue Rondo a la Turk holds back just to open up is frightfully sinister! Buy this one!

    Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

    Hi,

    I think this is a very nice Perlman collection...Beautiful works selected from different Musical Eras and different styles...And Mr. Perlman is very succesful in all these types of masterworks...you can easily feel the Bach's crying words...Mozart's fun...Brahms's passion...Sinding's virtuosity...Wienlawski's Romantism...Khachaturian's hurry...and Rachmaninov's sentiments....and many others...
    and also Israeli Orchestra did a very good job on this performance...They are like the third hand of Perlman...They work and feel like a family...
    If you are a Perlman Fan, you must have been already bought this CD...if you are not or new to this performer it is time to meet him..and it is the way to meet him...go!!!

    If you enjoy Itzhak Perlman and do not have very many of the selections on these discs, here is one way to get hold of them. Each of the four discs boasts a theme: 1. Baroque and Chamber Music, 2. Violin and Orchestra, 3. 20th Century Music, and 4. The Lighter Side. The selections are naturally limited to recordings Perlman did with EMI, but this represents quite a bit of his overall output. Among the recordings of the Sibelius Violin Concerto that I've heard, the one included here with André Previn and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one I enjoy immensely. I like the cinematic sweep of the Korngold Concerto; the Bach Violin Partita; the jazz selections written by Previn. There isn't much that I don't like here. Here is a compilation where variety is a key factor. If you're into variety and Perlman's style, this set gives you plenty of both.

    Almost 30 years ago, at Penn State while I was a student there, Itzhak Perlman visited, gave some lessons to aspiring violinists and gave the most astounding, memorable concert I've ever attended. Quite to the contrary of the fellow from Baton Rouge, Perlman was the consummate teacher who critiqued and encouraged students with far lesser talents, and he did it with class. This collection contains a number of recordings I already have but consider them worth having again in such a superbly arranged collection. His arrangements on the Hungarian Dances are the best!

    Perlman plays Bach quite well, but when compared to Hilary Hahn, Perlman comes out second best. Hilary captures the whole essence and spirit of Bach, and herr violin sings Bach in two, three, and four beautiful voices in perfect harmnony.

          5 out of 5 stars Grimethorpe is Never Grim!.......2001-01-19

          West Yorkshire in England consistantly produces eight to ten of the best brass bands in all the world. The Grimethorpe Collery Band's "Melody Shop" demonstrates why this band is always counted among the finest. This particular CD offers the listener a wide variety of musical tidbits. For the lovers of classical music, Grimethorpe's rendition of the Galop from Rossini's "William Tell" will certainly put you in that Lone Ranger mood!(This piece was heard in the movie "Brassed Off" with Grimethorpe providing the soundtrack for the fictional Grimley Band featured in the movie.)For 70s fans, the band does a hard-charging version of Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park."

          There is even a hymn on the CD. Barrie Gott's "Lightwalk" (from the old hymn tune "Walk in the Light) actually comes out of the Salvation Army Brass Band literature. I doubt that most listeners ever heard a hymn swing like this one!

          My personal favorite is the cut of "Lohengrin: Act 3 Prelude" by Wagner. It is hard to believe that this is a brass band- and I mean ALL BRASS- playing with such fire and technical accuracy. What a group! What a piece! What a wonderful combination!

          If you own no brass band CDs, this is a good place to start a collection. It listens "easy," has some tunes you know, and is consistantly entretaining.
