Weary Blues is, above all, sexy--Harlem jazz meets the Southern blues of Bessie Smith and smoky rooms, speakeasies, and pleasantly dirty thoughts. Langston Hughes is not only one of the century's finest American poets; he was the voice of black America in a time when opportunity was limited but hunger and drive were boundless. It is from his poem "Dream Montage" (included in this collection) that the superb Lorraine Hansberry play chose its title: "What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up, like a raisin in the sun?" In his throaty, mellifluous voice, Hughes reads his words of black beauty, freedom, desire, and celebration even in times of hardship and abuse. Leonard Feather sets the first half of the disc to traditional blues and gospel bar patterns. On the remaining poems, Charles Mingus and band organically improvise a big, jazzy sound that punctuates Hughes's words. --Paige La Grone

Ex-Black Crowes guitarslinger Marc Ford's second solo album literally sounds like a classic. With its conflagrant riffing, big six-string tones, blues bedrock, and tunes that swing from soulful pop ballads like "The Other Side" to grinders like "Don't Come Around," the disc recalls a time in the '60s when groups like the MC5 and Humble Pie were at rock's creative apex. The wah-wah-mad instrumental "The Big Callback" also nods to Hendrix, and "Smoke Signals" has the drama of early Neil Young and Crazy Horse. But ultimately Ford's a synthesist, not a copycat, so his unpredictable guitar heroics are as likely to explode into clouds of whinnying feedback as to sprint into marathons of bent, ringing sustained notes and pentatonic scales. Ford's lyrics display a street poet's sensibility that matches his light-sandpaper voice. And as a song interpreter, he shakes the dust off "That Same Thing" with expressionistic jabs of moaning, raging guitar that make the hoary blues chestnut a raw, unexpected highlight. "Just Take the Money" trumpets contempt for his former bandmates. That's not the classiest move, but with his own fiery style at his absolute command, Ford needn't worry about burning bridges. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
Marc Ford's first record was with CBS' renowned retro blues rockers Burning Tree in the late 1980's. Burning Tree's self-titled debut album was a much-heralded debut among guitar aficionados and led to Ford being asked to join The Black Crowes.
Ford put his stylized guitar stamp on the Black Crowes' records "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,""Amorica" and "Three Snakes and One Charm" as well as making two additional records with the band, "Tall" and "The Band" which were recorded in the 90's and were previously unreleased until 2006.
Ford accepted an invitation to join "Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals" and toured with them, recording their EP and DVD each entitled "Live at the Hollywood Bowl."and won a Grammy Award in 2004 for his involvement with Ben Harper and the Blind Boy's Of Alabama's record, "There Will Be A Light." Ford also appears on Ben Harper and the Blind Boy's Of Alabama's DVD "Live At The Apollo." Two years ago Ford was asked to rejoin The Black Crowes and recorded their "All Join Hands" reunion tour while also continuing to work with Harper, appearing on his 2006 album "Both Sides of the Gun." After the 2006 release of the double CD and DVD "Into the Fog," Live At The Fillmore with The Black Crowes," Ford left the Black Crowes and began making plans to record "Weary and Wired." This significant recording shows Marc's strength as a singer/songwriter, fueled by large doses of his phenomenal guitar work that brings to mind such masters as Clapton, Hendrix and Beck.

Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-10
Overall an excellent effort with surprisingly good production. Always a huge Marc Ford fan, particularly with the Black Crowes. After his recent hasty departure from the band, and reuniting with Burning Tree, I wasn't sure what to expect from this effort. Overall, I enjoy nearly all tracks, in particular 1000 Ways, Dirty Girl, Other Side, Currents. The 2 instrumentals Greasy Chicken & Big Call Back are funky and well recieved.
Bravo Marc...you are the man!
Smoke Signals.......2007-05-31
You have to support Marc Ford with his recent difficulties with the over-egotized Black Crowes. He was always the striking noise on Southern Harmony, and it probably wasn't his fault the albums went downhill after Amorica. His first solo album was an interesting venture, sounding almost Jayhawks-ish at times (with Louris as a guest on some tracks), but ultimately over-long.
Weary and Wired has the same troubles, and then some. My favorite cup of tea is '70s meat and potatos rock but somehow this doesn't quite come off. Most songs seem stunted or too simply constructed (if that can be a criticism of such a genre). I guess it's just that they're not that well conceived. I actually don't have a problem with Ford's singing because it's genuine, but his lyrics are bad even for meat and 'taters standards. Guitar-wise there are bursts of brilliance and slightly more room allowed to hear them, but in a world with the likes of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks I don't know if this will hit the the note overall (to call Ford a great slide player is just a tad silly, and Haynes just seems to conquer at everything).
There's a lot of genre crossing here, from Free stompers to Southern not-quite fried to distorted blues. People have raved about The Same Thing and it is attention grabbing, but ultimately seems to rip off Jeff Beck circa Trust (also The Allman Brothers do a much meaner, improvised version on their recent tours). I guess that's the problem--probably too derivative and again too long (what's the point of Running Man Blues and Bye Bye Suzy, apart from the former's searing solo???).
In simple terms Marc Ford needs a band. Not the Black Crowes. Not Ben Harper. He needs a captivating singer, probably a co-writer, and he needs to thrust himself that way into the limelight. Then he can stick one to the Crowes. Watch out for the wanted ad.
A better guitarist there isn't..........2007-05-16
Marc Ford is an incredibly talented musician. This CD rips from the get-go! I could listen to the tones he gets for days, but his melodies are fantastic as well. Buy it and you won't be dissapointed. I just wish he could find a way to still make music with the Black Crowes.
Not bad, but expected more.......2007-05-09
I've heard Marc with other bands and expected a little more from this solo. Might have been the choice of songs, but it left me wanting more.
great slide playing. .......2007-04-23
marc ford is his usual brilliant self here, proving to be the best guitarist of his generation, and probably the 7th best ever, behind only michael hedges, leslie west, jeff beck, andres segovia, john 5 and robin trower. if you like his first record, this is even better.

Pickin' A Nit.......2005-10-07
Sure woulda liked it if the CD was split up into tracks, instead of one long track. Sure is annoying to have to listen to the whole thing in one sitting or not at all. Also, Leonard Feather has always been a bit square- and he does half the music. The MINGUS half is MINGalicious! Otherwise- please refer to the other more helpful reviewers re:actual content of CD.
Consider Me.......2004-04-18
I have listened to and enjoyed other musical compositions for Langston Hughes' poetry, but I feel that Charles Mingus and Leonard Feather are true to the jazz sound that inspired Hughes when he wrote and read his poetry aloud. Hughes' recitations and their compositions complement each other very well. One frustration worth noting is that the CD version is not divided into individual tracks--all fifteen tracks play as one track.
dream deferred.......2001-06-20
I am grateful that I had the opportunity to listen to this CD of poetry by Mr Langston Hughes. First, the things I do not like about this CD are that Mr Hughes is a bit too melliferous at times bordering on laconic. I never hear the strength of conviction which matches his powerful words. Still, there is plenty that I do like about this CD. The legendary Mr Charles Mingus arranges, conducts and performs for the second half (i.e. second side of the vinyl album as it was originally released) and Mr Leonard Feather arranges and conducts the first half as well as writes the notes. Mr Feather writes that "The Weary Blues, the title poem of this album, won first prize in a contest held in 1925 by a magazine call 'Opportunity'." The words include, "Democracy will not come this day, this year or ever, through compromise and fear. / I have as much right as the other fellow has to stand on my two feet and own the land / I tire so of hearing people say let things take their course, tomorrow is another day / I do not need my freedom when I am dead / I cannot live on tomorrow's bread / Freedom is a strong seed, planted in a great need / I live here, too; I want freedom just as you." Twenty-three years after these words were penned, Mr Hughes read his works in a New York studio to create this album. Mr Feather wrote, "the Civil Rights revolution has drastically altered the state of our society." It is voices such as Mr Langston Hughes' that bring about such change. If you are interested in jazz poetry, this CD will interest you.

Langston Hughes&Charles Mingus are Two Great Minds.Hughes Wrote What Being A NEGRO Was About in America In A Time With Little Hope but Vision&Drive Were A Must to Have TO Survive.Mingus is One Of Jazz&Music In General's Greatest Teachers. In Fact The Same Goes For MR.Hughes He is One Of The Greatest Minds The World Has Ever Known. This is a Must.Get It Before It Goes Away.this is very Essential.
Quite a unique recording with Langston Hughes.......2000-01-04
This is one of those rare recordings with a wonderful blend of poetry and jazz. There are so few examples of this blend represented in jazz recording history, although I am sure it has been more prevalent in performance. I looked for this for a long time on LP after hearing it on WPFW and never saw it until it came out on CD and I called up the DJ for the info. This is one you should definitely buy as it is bound to go out of print again... also look into the James Baldwin, which may also currently be out of print on CD temporarily as I have had people ask me for it.

Customer Reviews:
The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02
Many composers have chosen to perform their own material and commit it to discs, with mixed results. Only with Noel Coward do we feel that a good deal of the charm of his numbers lies in the very way he performs them. For proof, we now have the Naxos Nostalgia
(8.120529), which dishes up 16 tracks of the ultra-refined son of W. S.Gilbert, giving us six selections from "This Year of Grace," one from "Bittersweet," a medley of treasures from his "Cavalcade," another from his other works, and a few other trifles that are better than most of what is written today.
Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.
The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25
I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.
Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02
I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.
Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.
The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.
I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.
Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18
I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.
COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30
Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.
The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

Album Description
The "world class" (Fanfare) nine-voice ensemble Chciago a cappella brings its trademark "wit, imagination, [and] flawless intonation" (Chicago Tribune) to 23 contemporary choral settings of Shakespeare texts -- including ten recorded premieres and three works composed expressly for the group. Making its Cedille Records debut, Chicago a cappella performs artful arrangements that draw from influences ranging from bossa nova and the blues to Renaissance and medieval modes. A fascinating spectrum of styles is heard -- within single works and across the entire program.
