Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
Five years ago, it may have seemed presumptuous for Gregg Karukas to call one of his most popular recordings You'll Know It's Me, but back then, his sugary, ultra-melodic, slightly funkified keyboard style was truly identifiable from the first few notes of any song he played. Since then, however, he's pushed the rhythmic and stylistic envelopes in so many exciting, new directions that the Karukas of 2000 isn't quite the same guy anymore.

Released in 1998, Blue Touch lived up to its title by moving in what Karukas calls a "bluesy, funky, greasy, and organic" direction. His NCoded debut Nightshift - so named for Karukas' propensity to work vampire-like in his studio all night - moves even further in that direction. His melodies are still as instantly hummable as ever, but he varies their surroundings to include Crusaders-inspired retro-soul elements, snazzy horn sections, and more Latin and Brazilian percussion patterns than ever before.

As always, Karukas chose to work with sidemen with whom he felt a magical rapport. When he pays homage to one of his greatest influences on the silky electric-piano ballad "Stevie (Wonderful)," Dino Soldo is right there with the perfect lazy chromatic harmonica solo. And when the keyboardist needs crazed Brazilian jungle effects on the percussive, brass-tinged "Small World," who else could he call but Luis Conte?

Elsewhere, Pat Kelley's snappy, high-tone electric guitar blends perfectly with Karukas' own upper-register, melodic dabblings on "Chasing the Wind," while guitarist Michael O'Neill's gritty fretwork proves the perfect foil for Karukas' soulful Fender Rhodes musings on the brooding "Silent Promise." On "My Favorite Season" Karukas trades off a lighthearted synth-vibes melody with a Rhodes solo and an acoustic-piano interlude, while Paul Jackson Jr.'s subtle rhythm-guitar jangling perfectly compliments the tune's Pollyanna-ish cheer.

I always listen to channel 28 on satelite audio and this is where I was fortunate to be exposed to Gregg's music. What more can one say .... SUPERB! Other artist that ranks with Gregg is the likes of Jeff Lorber, Rick Braun which I thing is very under rated at this time, Chris Boti and need I continue....

More please!!!!!!!

THERE IS REALLY NOT THAT MUCH TO SAY YOUR CD IS GREAT;)

5 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect.......2005-03-19

This is a nearly perfect little gem I consider to be the best investment I ever made. I picked this up a couple years ago from a $1 "cut-out" bin and it turned out to be one of my survival tools for Houston traffic. This cd has an immediate relaxing effect on me no matter how bad my commute to work is. Even the lone vocal number sung by Jonathan Butler doesn't seem out place in the middle of this otherwise all-instrumental collection. The title track is a staple on the local smooth jazz station 95.7 "the wave". I have to wonder why Gregg hasn't released anything since this one. Must be hard to top "near perfection". Highly recommended for smooth jazz fans.-mw

5 out of 5 stars Gregg Karukas' Nightshift CD.......2002-05-05

I just picked up this cd from the mailbox, I reviewed it all the way home. I did not know this guy was this good-cool-mellow. I would highly recommend this tastful sound to anyone with taste.
If you are one of those people who like to think of yourself as upbeat, you will love this mellow sound.

5 out of 5 stars Chasing the Wind.......2001-07-02

The first time I heard this selection, was 5:30 a.m. on The Oasis 107.5 Smooth Jazz Radio. I was on my way to work which is 70 plus miles from where I live. It was so smooth I woke right up and ask myself "self, who is that by!!!?". It's so smooth I can drive all day and not even get tired. The CD is about worn out because it is my favorite. I suggest that this be a #1 hit everywhere. Thanks "MR. K" for your inspiration.

3 out of 5 stars The Commodores,post-Lionel Richie.......2007-01-19

This 1985 release was not highly acknowledged like the band's predecessors because it lacked the band's staple member,Lionel Richie. Three years earlier,Richie's solo career had taken off and his first three solo albums were megahits(1983's CAN'T SLOW DOWN was the biggest-seller). The only Top 20 hit from this album was the title track, mentioning the names Marvin and Jackie, referring to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. The band obviously paid homage to these R&B legends. Back in '85,Richie's hits were WE ARE THE WORLD,co-written with Michael Jackson and SAY YOU SAY ME from the Columbia film WHITE NIGHTS and its soundtrack album(later appearing on his '86 release DANCING ON THE CEILING). WATW was recorded by an all-star ensemble known as USA For Africa. Sales from that song, album or single, went to benefit the ending of hunger, illness and lack of clothing and education in Africa. The Commodores disbanded not too long after this release.

5 out of 5 stars stellar talent , original point of view.......2006-12-30

I started listening to David in 1987 on vinyl. I was immediately hooked. I play guitar(badly) and was intrigued by his use of open tunings as if it was a natural extension of himself. He is obviously doing what he is supposed to be doing. (ie, destiny, fate, will, whatever you wish to call it) I would recommend this piece of work as a foundation for his writing and then stay close to the chronological order of releases. Any artist has to grow, or stagnate. David cannot and should not stay just like the David we individually love to hear. His writing is so insightful and brings such a fresh look on things. If you are a thinker, then he is for you. If you like nice shallow pretty music, go elsewhere. That is not what he is about. Above all else, go to a live show! This CD(originally an album) is the least produced recording and has a great simplicity of sound. If you love this one you will buy the next two or three for sure!

4 out of 5 stars IF you're already a fan: / If you're not a fan yet:.......2002-02-01

If you're a David Wilcox fan already:

LIKE the rest of D.W.'s work, this is good, simple music,
meshed with stunningly well-written lyrics.

UNLIKE D.W.'s other work, you should read the CD's liner-notes BEFORE listening to the CD. Without the insights provided in the liner notes, you will almost certainly fail to catch the double-meanings woven into the title track, and the personal significance (in David Wilcox's life) of many of the other songs' themes.

If you've never heard David Wilcox before:
David Wilcox sounds alot like James Taylor: an almost-conversational male voice, singing over accoustic guitar and other quiet-ish instruments.
This format allows the words to get to us, without having to fight through a wall of sound.
That's good for us, because David Wilcox's lyrics are 1) the best part of his music, and 2) stunningly well-written and insightful.

David Wilcox's lyrics are head and shoulders above any other lyrics I have ever heard. They resonate with clever imagery and keen insight into personal relationships.

David writes primarily about relationships or reminiscences. His songs are alot like the conversations you might have had with your best friend. Unlike other lyricists, who seem trapped in a single theme ("love songs", "Let's go get drunk", "I'm so lonely since my horse died", or "Aren't I wonderful ?"), David manages to write intelligent, entertaining, and compassionate pieces about many, many kinds of relationship: Settling down, breaking up, buying the beat-up car you had while you were in high-school, turning middle-aged, being a teenager, feeling "different from the norm"...and so on.

David's music will not club you over the head with HIS lifestyle, but you WILL feel that the music is in tune with your own lifestyle. You won't find references to huntin' dogs and moonshine (like Jeff Foxworthy's humor), or overt religous messages (like Amy Grant's songs), or any other imagery that might make you feel distanced from the author. In fact, after listening to most of David Wilcox's work, I cannot definitively say what David's religion might be, ..But I DO feel, and I suspect that you will also feel, that he's the sort of person who has keen insights into various stages of life and personal relationships, and has a splendid talent for communicating those insights in an engaging way.

If you enjoy James Taylor, then you'll LOVE David Wilcox.
Buying a CD by David Wilcox is like gaining a one-way friendship with a stable, thoughtful, quietly entertaining person.

4 out of 5 stars great debut.......2000-11-15

If you like complex, yet simple acoustic music...tune in to this one. David Wilcox finally released this on CD...I had the tape for a few years. It's full of metaphors. Most of the songs are several levels deep. My personal favorites...Come Away To Sea, Daddy's Money, and Santa Fe. It's Almost Time is also a great tune, but the version on "How Did You Find Me Here" is superior.

5 out of 5 stars I"m glad you recorded this CD.......1999-01-16

Back in 1989 I was living in Denver Colorado and I heard Daddy's Money and The Nightshift Watchman on a Boulder AM station. when I called the station to find out what album these songs were on, the DJ said that these songs were lent to the station as demo's and weren't currently on the market. David, your quick wit and your keen insight to the human soul makes your music so enjoyable. I now have all six of your CD's and I enjoy them all. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars David recommended this to me!.......1999-01-13

Walking in the Atlanta airport, I passed someone who looked familiar. It took a few seconds but I recognized David Wilcox from a CD cover photo. Taking a chance I turned toward him and said, "David Wilcox?" He stopped, smiled, and waved me over. What a nice guy! He seemed genuinely interested in having a conversation with a fan. He mentioned that this CD may be available soon and that I might enjoy it. He was right. This early material is easy-to-listen-to, relaxing accostic folk. "It's Almost Time" remains one of my favorite David Wilcox songs. Thanks for the recommendation, David. I hope to run into you again sometime. Happy travels!

4 out of 5 stars Another not so exciting Dave Brubeck album.......2004-08-16

As an orginal Dave Brubeck fan and one who met him and the quartet several times, I have to admit I'm disappointed at this album. The CD is a very good jazz album; it's just not a very good Dave Brubeck one. Even though it's live from the Blue Note in 1993, Dave sounds rather lackluster. Bobby Militello is in no way shape or form any comparison to Paul Desmond; in fact, I find too much of a "fish horn" quality to his playing. Bill Smith does an admirable job on clarinet and the rest of the crew are good. There's good jazz on this CD, but I think I'll donate the CD to the local library.

4 out of 5 stars Another Essential Brubeck CD.......2001-01-28

For what you'll pay for this CD, its worth it just to hear the opening number, "Yesterdays", which has to rank as one of the best live recordings by any Brubeck-led ensemble. Bobby Mitello may not be Paul Desmond, but he swings his way through this number with such bravado that you'll want to hit the repeat button just to hear this number again before moving on to track # 2.

The rest of the CD is similarly spectacular. The only downside, and the main reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5, is Chris Brubeck's bass trombone which seems wildly out of place on most the numbers he participates in, except "Ain't Misbehavin'", where the gritty sound of the bass trombone is entirely appropriate for the mood of the song. On the other numbers, however, I found it somewhat of a distraction. That's just a matter of personal taste, however, and should not dissaude you from treating yourself to yet another example of the reason why I consider Dave Brubeck one of the greatest jazz musicians of the last 50 years.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2000-07-01

Ever been asked the question, "If you were stranded on a desert island, what CD would you want?" Well, here is the answer. Not only is "Nightshift" a collection of songs from a group of jazz masters at the top of their game, but it is the rawest, most visceral example of what an aesthetic/emotional wallop music can pack. This CD effortless scoops you out of your mundane existance and slam dunks you into the diner from Hopper's "Nighthawks," or any masterful film-noir cinescape--it's that evocative.

After listening to the flawless technique on a track like "Knives" (my favorite Brubeck tune, btw) it is difficult to turn on the radio without regarding the steady stream of pre-fab, TV-dinner music groups as nothing more than background noise. Brubeck et al are artists. And even in his 70s, Dave teaches all us young bucks a thing or two about how the best make it look easy.

5 out of 5 stars Nightshift: Outstanding Live Jazz.......1999-08-11

I have over 100 jazz albums and this one is hands down my favorite. Even after listening to it about twenty times, certain spots still literally give me goosebumps and move me emotionally. "Nightshift" is a stunning, well-wrought performance, where the listener can discover something new with each sitting. What makes "Nightshift" so fantastic? It's the combination of a stellar musical score with the ambience of a live recording. Add to this top-flight musicians who are not only technically perfect, but emotionally uninhibited, and one has quite an album. Beyond these elements, however, it's the arrangement of the tunes that pushes the album into the "masterpiece" category. The songs are performed in a crescendo fashion. By this I mean they begin by relaxing the listener with gentle sounds before expanding with deep musical intensity. In this way, the relaxed listener is "awed" by the increase in sound and complexity. One experiences this phenomenon not only within each song, but it is apparent if the album is viewed as a whole: the first track is mellow compared to the heart-pumping finale, "River Stay 'Way From My Door." That song, by the way, includes the kind of mind-boggling vigor that makes then 74 year-old Dave Brubeck seem 25. If all you own is an old Brubeck "Time Out" LP, take some time out and listen to "Nightshift." It's different and very memorable. -- G.N. Saliba

5 out of 5 stars Maybe you are there... Maybe all this are real..........1999-06-01

Are you the kind of people that love to feel as you are there? This CD is for you. Not only is pure sound but pure atmosphere. You hear all from cough to glasses. Everything is there, is all around you. So, Maybe all that is real. Maybe you are there.

I just hope that the stigma of being "Asian" is overlooked because his music definitely breaks the barrier. If you like Brian McKnight, Criag David or Sade, you will love this CD. This is Definitely one for the Ladies and for the Men who love to love the Ladies. You can't really put a category or label on his music. His music is just plain smooth. Whether you just listen to relax or listen to love. Just Listen.
