Product Description
Marvin Gaye revolutionized the sound of R&B and soul. The Rock N' Roll Hall of Famer's contributions to the music forever changed the world. He was a pivotal force behind the Motown sound and wrote countless numbers of hits, not only for himself but or numerous artists. He will forever be remembered for his rich, smooth voice that crooned the sweetest love songs and his politically and socially conscious lyrics that captured the hearts and minds of an era. Marvin, Teddy and Luther pays tribute to Marvin Gaye with memorable interpretations of his classics "You Sure Love to Ball," "After The Dance" and "I Want You."

Teddy Pendergrass is the ultimate soul man. His voice and style wooed an entire generation of women to flock to his "For Women Only" concerts and be romanced by his sultry lyrics, silky voice and sexy tank tops. This former member of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes was instrumental in helping to mold Gamble & Huff's legendary Philadelphia sound. His classics like "Wake Up Everybody" and "Turn off the Lights" set the standard for modern R&B ballads. Marvin, Teddy and Luther celebrates Mr. TP with soulful and melodic renditions of some of the most well known songs he sang like Gamble and Huff's "Turn Out the Lights," Ashford and Simpson's "Is It Still Good To Ya?" and "Love TKO."

Luther Vandross is one of the ultimate balladeers. He is the present day link to all the great soul singers that came before him. This consummate chart-topper was the reigning ‘love man' of the 80s and to this day there is no contemporary singer who can bring to life an R&B slow jam quite like Luther. He has sung duets with everyone from Janet Jackson to Mariah Carey and has produced for such divas as Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. Everyone loves Luther. Marvin, Teddy and Luther celebrates Luther Vandross with tender versions of his hits like "So Amazing," "If Only For One Night" and "Here and Now."

5 out of 5 stars Pour Some Wine, Light A Candle and enjoy .......2006-12-10

Marvin, Teddy and Luther: A Smooth Urban Jazz Love features a nice twist on some of the most beloved slow jams from three premier balladers. Standouts include David Mann's covers of Luther's So Amazing & If Only For One Night. The disc is geared around slow and steady seduction -- a sexy dance followed by whatever the listener has in mind later for his or her dance partner. There's something particularly innovative or unique in the arrangements of these ballads. Everybody loves these songs, and they provide spotlights for the principal musicians while making for some nice late-night soul swaying.

1 out of 5 stars Cheesy........2006-03-13

I have found that most tribute albums are lame and why not just listen to the original. This one is cheesy.
But there are exceptions.
So when I first heard about the project of a tribute to Grover Washington , I thought how do you cover God, because Grover was like a God to contemporary jazz.
WOW! What an album! OK, nobody had to write any songs on this, but they all put their own spin on each song and did a fabulous job.
Jason Miles produced this fresh off two grammy nominees for his 2000 release tribute CD to Ivan Lins ( Sting won for his version of "She Walks This Earth" while Grover was nominateed for "Cameleo " ).
First the lineup is just stellar: Regina Belle , Gerald Albright, Russ Freeman, Ronnie Laws with Sounds Of Blackness, Herbie Mann, Tom Schuman and Jeff Mironov, Dave Koz, Everette Harp, Steve Cole, George Duke, Mark Whitfield, Richard Elliot, Jay Beckenstein with Dean Brown, Paul Taylor with Peter White, Chuck Loeb with Dave Mann, Chaka Khan, Greg Philinganes with the New York Philharmonic String Section, and Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Joe Sample with Joey Defrancesco.
If you'd pick up an album with all of these guys on it and it wasn't all Grover tunes you'd buy it! In fact you'd probably have a huge grin on your face and tell half the store about your lucky find on the way to the cash register. So now imagine all these guys playing their version of all these great Grover tunes like: "Just The Two Of Us" , "Winelight", " East River Drive" , "Inner City Blues ", " Come Morning " , " Let It Flow" and more.
I can see you smiling and saying yeah I'd buy it and you should. " To Grover , with Love " is magnificent ! It's good. It's great.
It's deadly gorgeous !!
