Product Description
The jazz world got to know Miguel Zenón quite well in 2004. The young alto saxophonist/composer expanded his already impressive sideman résumé with featured roles in the SF Jazz Collective and Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. He also captivated numerous listeners with his heralded Marsalis Music debut, Ceremonial. With Jíbaro, his second Marsalis Music release, Zenón makes his most deeply rooted yet visionary statement to date. Among the most original, lyrical and passionate statements you will hear this year, the new disc explores the rural music of Zenón's native Puerto Rico through his ten original compositions that both honor and expand upon the tradition with its unique sense of organization and form.

    Album Description

Waxing Deep Records is pleased to announce the first ever compilation of Cuban funk: Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, Volume One. An unprecedented combination of socialism and artistic freedom flourished during the mid-years of Castro's Cuba, enabling musicians to create an innovative body of music based on traditional styles like those made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club. Si, Para Usted captures the spirit of this time. The music ranges from son, beat, jazz, and funk, and abounds with psychedelic influences, electronic experimentation, and a heavy dose of soul. Communist funk may seem unlikely, but here it is. Si, Para Usted was lovingly compiled by Dan Zacks of Waxing Deep Radio in response to massive listener demand for the Cuban music played on the show. Outside of the Waxing Deep archive, the bulk of funky Cuban music is virtually unobtainable. Cuban recordings were never widely distributed and few have been reissued. Utterly committed to sharing good music, Dan took it upon himself to make these fantastic tracks more widely accessible. Almost all of the tracks were re-mastered from the original tapes kept by the Cuban government in a dusty Havana warehouse. Given the poor quality of Cuban vinyl, this means the music on Si, Para Usted has a quality of sound previously unavailable. Quite simply, the music has never sounded this good.

      Product Description

It was Yomo Toro who brought the cuatro (a four string guitar) into the international arena the funky jibaro (whom Robert Palmer, writing in The New York Times, called the Puerto Rican Jimi Hendrix ) was a long time member of the Fania All Stars. When Roswell first heard Yomo he swooned, and they finally met in 2002 when Roswell sat in with Yomo at a concert in Haverstraw, NY. It was love at first sound and their collaboration had seeded. Following MaliCool and Blue Mongol, Roswell Rudd now collaborates with musicians of the Latin culture, and the fusion with his jazz idiom is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Nice intro to traditional Puerto Rican music........2007-03-15

This CD provides just the right variety of music native to the island. It has a good mix of bembe, plena, slow, and dance music. Even those who are not usually into Latin music like this CD. I play it for children and they like it as well. I also enjoyed the informative information on the roots of Puerto Rican music included on the insert (cover) of the CD.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't bother / Ni te molestes........2006-11-30

The only worthwhile items on this CD are numbers 8, 9, and 11. The rest is an amalgamam of depressing songs, mostly "pregones", making it the primal reason this compilation stinks, as Puerto Rican music is usually very upbeat and full of life. I have a feeling that whomever decided on most of these particular songs had a hidden political agenda, as the lyrics have an "independentista" double entendre to them.

I should have suspected, since the album contains two numbers with Andrés "El Jíbaro" Jímenez, a once-promising artist who got too high on his political horse. I guess he must think of himself as the Puerto Rican equivalent of Silvio Rodríguez, "y realmente no le llega ni a los talones".

Don't waste your money, that is, unless you're into the "blame the Yankee for every problem in Puerto Rico" mindset.

Oh, and one more thing: "¡Ni siquiera es bailable!" Now, isn't that proof enough that it's not an album representative of Puerto Rican music?

      2 out of 5 stars PUYUMAYO P.R.= STINKER.......2006-10-24

I may just not like this music i lived in the Dominican Republic and have visited Puerto Rico and love most latino music but i did not care for this cd.The only 2 song's that are worth playing are track's 9/10.
I do have the D.R. cd which is more user friendly then this one ! J.B.

5 out of 5 stars never gets boring.......2006-05-15

5 out of 5 stars Buena introduccion a la musica Boricua.......2005-03-30

3 out of 5 stars Jibaro Hasta El Hueso.......2004-11-03

Edwin Colon Zayas is one of many traditional Puerto Rican artists preserving the musical history of Jibaro country folk. Descendants of Puerto Ricans living in the United States and abroad would be surprised to learn that cuatro music is not just for Christmas.

In the central mountain range of Borinquen, this music is listened to on a daily basis by countryside residents. El aguinaldo, el seis and the décima are some of the main styles which characterize different regions. Coastal areas are more inclined to the playing of Bomba and Plena.

If you have a passion for Puerto Rican mountain music with the Cuatro, this CD is for you. I purchased a Cuatro last year; this CD has been an invaluable tool to learning to play along to some difficult routines.

5 out of 5 stars Puerto Rican music at its best!!.......2003-07-13

Bien Jibaro! is definitely a must have. A great sample of a lot of different styles of the typical puertorrican music like seis, aguinaldo, danza etc. Edwin Colon is the best cuatro player in the world and I highly recommend all of his CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Viva la musica jibara!.......2002-02-15

What a wonderful reminder of the unique richness of Puerto Rican music and culture! If you're "boricua", share this music with both your parents and your kids. If you like virtuostic guitar music, with a hint of salsa and jazz, this CD is for you. Great, great stuff.

      5 out of 5 stars Bien Jibaro.......2001-09-01

      5 out of 5 stars Simply BRILLIANT!.......2005-09-24

The most amazing aspect of this CD, is the spectacular ensemble. We already know that Zenon is a great Sax player, but the way he composed for every instrument is truly amazing. It's not just about his Sax; the piano(I love what he does!), the bass and the drums have their integral part and is a matter of making music as a group... great music! Even though you know the "jibaro" music or not, this is a CD you'll love; it's creative and refreshing, as well as musically interesting.

      4 out of 5 stars A Blossoming Star .......2005-09-20

With his recent release "Jibaro" Miguel Zenon has proven that the kudos that fans and critics have showered him with are right on. Here's why. Jibaro which means a certain Puerto Rico "folk music" is a showcase for Zenon's amazing composition skills[he wrote all the tunes] and his uniquely non-latin way of playing a "type" of latin jazz. While it's tough to categorize "Jibaro" I think it's really interesting that a Puerto Rican band leader, with several latin players, play distinctly non-latin sounding tunes on a cd devoted to the leaders homeland. There are no traditional latin instruments[congas, timbales, etc.]and in fact the band consists of a traditional jazz quartet.AND IT WORKS BEAUTIFULLY! Zenon's compositions snake with stops and starts. The jagged lines of his tunes are mostly interesting without cliche. The two tunes that stand out are "Chorreao" and the title tune "Jibaro". Again don't be fooled by the spanish sounding titles this is not your daddy's latin jazz[which I love].His supporting players are quite capable but Antonio Sanchez on drums deserves special mention.Sanchez along with Matt Wilson[check out "Wake Up!"]seem to be everywhere these days. Each man contribute steady, busy, interesting time while not sounding like they threw their kit down the stairs. Zenon has been everywhere lately. From the great SF Jazz Collective[check out their excelent recent release ] to the Mingus Big Band and of course his work with his original employer sax player David Sanchez[check out "Travesia"]. Miguel seems poised to build on those important collaborations along with his "good" previous cd "Ceremonial" with this release. "Jibaro" is interesting, beyond category, and an important cd for an upcomming star. Reccommended.

5 out of 5 stars With Jibaro, Miguel Zenon stand at the apex of young jazzers.......2005-06-12

Want to hear The Next Big Thing from young jazz practitioners? Look no farther. Miguel Zenón is it.

He's got it all: monster chops on alto sax; a deeply delved folkloric compositional concept (indeed, he's the Edward Simon of Puerto Rico, with this disc doing for him what La Bikina did for Simon); bandleading acumen far beyond his tender years; and that je ne sais quoi that serendipitously graces fortunate musicians every now and again.

The comparison to Edward Simon seems most apposite to these ears. Just as Simon has been able to evoke the deepest strains of Venezuelan folk musics on his handful of remarkable discs, so Zenón has done with indigenous Puerto Rican musics on this disc. Indeed, some of the numbers sound as if they could be right off of Simon's La Bikina (e.g., "Punto Cubano," and "Alguinaldo," which just goes to show, I suppose, the deep affinity the various Latin musics have with each other). That's fine by me, as La Bikina is one of my all-time favorite discs. Another apt comparison might be Egberto Gismonti and Northern Brazilian Indian music. Or again, Omar Sosa and what he's done with Cuban folk music.

In any case, this is gloriously realized world jazz of the highest order, my absolute favorite kind of music. If you have any affinity at all for this sort of thing, you will not want to miss it.

I've been a fan of Miguel's music for a couple of years now-especially his last record, Ceremonial. But Jibaro takes his musical vision to an even higher level. He is one of the most creative and original voices in jazz today and Jibaro is, by far, my favorite jazz CD this year.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Puerto Rican Folk-Jazz.......2004-05-09

This is the first of Pedro Guzman's series of instrumental discs called "Jibaro Jazz." A 'jibaro' is a Spanish word from the Caribbean for a 'country person', which reflects simplicity, honesty, and conviction. Guzman's music not only reflect these qualities but is an excellent mirror into the Puerto Rican mind.

Guzman melds traditional folk melodies played on the Puerto Rican cuatro (similar to a small guitar) with jazz and pop sensibilities. In addition, some of the songs on this disc and his others are covers of popular American television songs/jingles, such as "Los Picapiedras" / The Flintstones (it should be noted, since many Americans are unaware, that Puerto Ricans are passport-holding U.S. citizens, so the term "American" is not absolute here).

Guzman's music is light and inspiring. Perfect background for lying around in the hammock and listening to the symphony of coquis (or crickets)
