No matter what the context--and there have been scores of them--Bill Frisell has sounded like he's on one long, constant solo more than any other guitarist in jazz. His playing is singular enough, though, that it always stands way out in a good way, both calling attention to and deflecting attention from itself. With Ghost Town, Frisell is alone--at least in theory. It's definitely a solo outing, but Frisell doubles and triples up with samples and loops, sounding like a virtual ensemble in places. As on Good Dog, Happy Man, Frisell layers differing elements to create a swimming sound that swirls while staying down-home. But the sounds of Ghost Town are alternately more fragile and more challenging than Good Dog, eschewing the regularity of plotted rhythms for the waft of a melody or particular improvisational train of thought. With nods to Hank Williams ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"), The Carter Family ("Wildwood Flower"), and "The Far Side" creator Gary Larson, Frisell explores new ground but never loses sight of the trail he's pioneered between jazz and folksy roots music. --Andrew Bartlett
From Jazziz
A genuine artist pulls you in, explains things that didn't make sense before, rearranges your ideas. That is what guitarist Bill Frisell does. This is his first solo album, using discreet overdubbing to create humble folk and blues instrumentals with all of Frisell's trademarks: micro-pauses before a phrase, like someone whose sincerity makes them stutter; pretty riffs that would be cloying if they weren't played so freshly and didn't take off to such unusual places; and long, keening notes that soar into the ether. Frisell started out a Jim Hall fan. He believes jazz guitar can stretch to accommodate all the pleasures of American music, from bluegrass banjos to the yowl of Chicago blues and lo-fi texturation. His playing is recognizable from the first note, which means that he can rely on stock forms without sounding characterless. There are many guitarists in post-rock ploughing a similar-sounding furrow, but Frisell never drifts into mere ambience. There's a strong intelligence at work, a line of thought to follow. The harmonic palette is restricted - throughout the disc he sounds like he's going to break into 'Smokestack Lightnin'' - but that allows him to focus on the finger-on-string poetics, the nuances. This is not full-on Frisell (try his records with drummer Paul Motian for that), but if you're tiring of avant clamor, frisell's big-hearted populism is just the ticket.

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

An electric-guitar fan's dream.......2006-08-18
I first heard this album late one night through headphones when my college radio station played it in its entirety at the time of its release. Mesmerized, I purchased it the next day. I have always sought out great guitar work and consider this one of my favorite examples. Whereas some 70's guitarists' solos become over-extended and tedious, Dudek's solos have purpose, and he knows how to integrate them seamlessly and perfectly into the structure of his songs. The songs on this collection flow smoothly from one to the next, and it feels complete with a definite beginning, middle, and end.
Highlights for me on the album include the opening "Central Park," and prepare to be overwhelmed by the searing guitar work at the end of "Friend of Mine." "Does Anybody Care," with a reggae-inspired beat, has a nice message that is still relevant today. "Falling Out" achieves a great rock groove and demonstrates impeccable timing. The album ends masterfully with the title track.
I also own "Dudek" and "Say No More." Both certainly have their highlights, but I recommend this one, "Ghost Town Parade," as Dudek's most fully realized masterpiece.
Buy this one!!!!!!!.......2005-12-19
Be it "Ghost Town" the other initial Dudek albums "Les Dudek" or "Say No More" you will have a great addition to your collection.
My L.P. collection had (and still has) copies of each and they have been WELL played.
Les' guitar playing is robust and intense - a great example of a style that was prevelant in the Bay area during the 70's. While I agree that there is some influence of the annoyance of the late 70's - disco - I do not feel that it in any way detracts from the music or total feel of the disc.
I have been turning people on to Les for many many many years now and this album was always a sure fire introduction to one of the great guitar players to survive the 70's.
Buy ... Listen... Be Happy
This is an absolutely awesome album.......2005-11-04
This album (vinyl then) was constantly on in my dorm room when I was in college. Les is an outstanding guitar player and this album has some of the best slide guitar I have ever heard. No klunkers in the play list. I have turned many skeptics on to this album, and they always thank me afterwards.
The third of the three essential Les Dudek releases.......2005-06-18
I first became aware of Les Dudek from his appearance on the Allman Brothers' "Brothers & Sisters". When Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees" was at the height of its popularity here in Australia, I chanced upon "Say No More" in a record store. I asked the store owner to play the album for me. For some reason, the owner played side two for me. I was instantly hooked. "Old Judge Jones", "What's It Gonna Be" and "Zorro Rides Again" were (and remain) wonderful songs.
Having purchased "Say No More" and, later, the eponymous debut album, I had no hesitation in buying "Ghost Town Parade" upon its release. It is different from the earlier albums. The influence of the disco era can be heard (there are syn drums on some tracks which sound terribly dated today) and, if I recall correctly, Les used a Strat rather than a Les Paul on a number of tunes. Having said all that, it is a killer album with wonderful guitar playing throughout. Having recently purchased the CD, I agree with other reviewers that it stands the test of time remarkably well.
This was the last great album released by Les, in my view. The trio of "Les Dudek", "Say No More" and "Ghost Town Parade" represents a memorable synthesis of West Coast pop and Southern rock guitar stylings. Each of these albums is highly recommended.
Les is more.......2005-05-22
Les absolutely nails it on this re-release of his 1978 album. Killer guitar, killer vocals, and killer musicianship. Although this is my favorite, all his other releases are very strong as well. Les is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated and under appreciated guitarists/vocalist/songwriters of his era. All you need to do is listen to this CD and hear it for yourself. You will not be sorry. Now go and buy all his other releases that are finally on CD and enjoy the music!!

Different... in a good way.......2006-04-25
I had never heard of Bill Frisell, but stumbled upon a sampling of "Wildwood Flower", which I thought was beautiful. The rest of the cd is haunting and hypnotic, though not bad if you're that kind of mood. Although, it does get a little tiring listening to him play [what sounds like] out of tune. I like the cd, but I don't know if I'd pay any more for it than what I did.
Interesting funereal theme.......2005-05-24
I'm not a big Bill Frisell fan but I have to admit that his music has something special in a sense. It is weird, it his awkward, but in its best examples it has a kind of ethereal quality that is fascinating. I would not call his music pure "Jazz" because it does not swing, but it has its depth. This album, as a lot of reviewers has already said, is compiled of music Bill played by himself with some overdubbings, loops and stuff. The idea is interesting in my opinion. We have thousands of albums by bands, or soloists but few where a musician use some technology to paint all by himself his scenaries. I find interesting the concept. I judge this album for what it is, not thinking about what it could be if other musicians were involved or something like that. This album is a story by itself and that's it for me. I judge it for what it is. The music is "strange" as I said earlier. It's pure Frisell extravaganza at its fullest. Even if I don't find any difficulties in understading this music (I'm a Jazz musican myself) i find it still curious and interesting. Very MODAL. If you find strange Bill's music too, probably it is because he uses a lot of pedal notes (often from different tonal scales) and he mixes the modes trying to find "new" ways of mixing them. Anyway even in the more tonal tunes there are a lot of blues inflections. They're everywhere. With those inflections he probably tries to glue the different modes together. Jazz harmonies and sophistication are mixed with folkish stuff and instruments with very slow time signatures through the blues feeling and tricks. Hearing Bill playing his acoustic is something that I find very pleasing. In particular, in the case of this album it is a very folkish music with some electronic blitz, nice blues or "jazz" eclectic twists here and there (more bluesy than jazzy by the way). I agree with the guy who said that this music has a sort of funeral quality. Yes it's true. It is calm, ethereal, hipnotic, dense, it speaks of slow decadence. It speaks of loneliness even when it is played in major tonalities. But nevertheless I find this music very fascinating. I don't listen to this album all the time of course but when I feel tired or flat this album gives me what I need. It has a special place in my 7000 cds collection. It makes the perfect match with another album from Bill, the one he recorded with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones. The two albums have some tunes in common too even if in different versions of course. Bill guitar sounds here are extremely well chosen and the recording is very very correct, audiophile quality I might say. My fantastic Avalon loudspeakers reproduce perfectly the west decadence atmospheres Bill wanted to create (I suppose, ... by the way this is what his music communicates to me), with a lot of space and micro details. I find that this album is extremely nice even in its folkish, dark, unusual, awkward, "funereal" feel.
Probably the best of his recent albums.......2004-10-16
All these sycophantic 5 star reviews of all of Frisell's albums is getting tiresome. I own them all and count myself a serious, engaged fan of Frisell's. I listen to the music seriously and ambiently as well. He's a guy who seems unable to make up his mind whether he wants to be a legendary session player, adding his trademark guitar sound and riffs to collaborations, or whether he wants to fulfill some of his earlier promise as a true innovator and potential guitar genius. Guys like Mark O'Connor have managed to accomplish both, albeit on a different instrument, but Frisell seems to me to be absolutely in the first camp, that of session performer. But let's not overpraise someone with a fairly consistent sound and some nice chops all too rarely shown off. A few years ago, Frisell looked ready to unleash his genius and soul, such as on his wild solo on "East Timor" on Ginger Baker's "Unseen Rain" (which holds up nicely). But instead of moving forward, he settled into Joey Baron Zorn-influenced jazz sessions that are largely unremarkable. Frankly, I find the material no better than John Abercrombie's work. Then Frisell looked like he was going to break out in a new genre, the kind of New Grass jazz material pioneered by O'Connor and Edgar Meyer (recommended: Skip Hop and Wobble), which Yo Yo Ma got on their train with on his successful Appalachian Journey, and Frisell put out his superb "Nashville." Again, he didn't go anywhere with it by himself, and he has churned out variations on it in various session recordings. Yet again he settles into session playing which I find unambitious and, to be frank, often soulless. I find it to be great shame, since that solo on "East Timor" shows the guy can draw on something inside that goes beyond the safe zone he so often inhabits.
That said, Ghost Town is to me by far his most successful and consistent albums from Nashville through 2004 (when I'm writing now).
Before you mark my review as unhelpful because I have criticized a purported guitar god, I am truly trying to be helpful by suggesting this cd over Blues Dream or Good Dog Happy Man or Intercontinentals or Unspeakable, for those who are not big fans but would like to pick up another Frisell since Nashville.
What Was Mr. Frisell Thinking With This One?.......2004-08-28
I'm sorry but this album isn't what I expected it to be. This album is the embodiment of anything that's not musical. The reason I'm giving this album 2 stars is for the song "Wildwood Flower," which seems to be the most cohesive song on the album. As another reviewer said, he needs to be in a band context. I think solo guitar excursions like this should be just for fun not on an album. I'm a guitarist and I play around with loops all the time, but I'm just fooling around I'm not making actual songs up. I think the beauty of playing with other musicians is the fact that they'll make your music head in directions that you otherwise wouldn't go in. BILL PLEASE DON'T EVER MAKE AN ALBUM LIKE THIS AGAIN! You're better off with albums like "Good Dog, Happy Man," "The Willies," "Nashville," and "The Intercontinentals."
Incredibly haunting and thoughful piece of music........2004-08-22
Ok here it is Folks,
Bill Frisell's Ghost Town is not meant to listen to if you want to dance, get up and shout at the moon, or workout with a reckless abandon. It's an album that takes you away to a very creative, peaceful, hypnotic place that only you're self on a quiet night or day can be truly self absorbed in this Masterpiece. If you play the guitar, (I do) - you should realize this is not just doodling around on a multi track device, it's well thought out and deep. It amazes me how some people can rate this and use the names of progressive fusion guitar player's names, this album is not about that, nor do I think that was Bill Frisell's approach toward writing the material. If you are longing for an instrumental album that's full of guitar chops this is definitely not the album for you. This album simply put is Masterful in its sensitivity, empty space, melody, and unique style to say the least.

In support of Brenda X.......2005-03-11
What a great contribution Poco have made over the years to music.
While some of their albums have been patchy, the highs have been up there in the stars. These two albums were average on balance but I have to come out in support of the song Brenda X, mercilessly panned by a former reviewer. I love Paul Cotton's work and this track is straight from the heart, a real goose-bump ride. The rural metaphor is superb in this ode to true love. And the music . . . I just love that backgroud synthesiser
that frames this minor key all American opus. It sends chills down my spine. Right down here in the South Pacific, that song lives. Straight out of heaven . . .
Put this horse out to pasture!!!.......2004-04-11
Poco's career highlights include some of the finest albums released in the country-rock genre. These two are not among them. The band had run out of steam by this point, and these discs - especially INAMORATA - represent feeble efforts to gain AOR pop stardom. The few bright spots here are included on the ULTIMATE COLLECTION. You can sleep well without wasting $100 or more on a copy of this turkey. There's a reason this one's out of print!
POCO Purists May Not Like It.......2001-04-30
Two complete (and sadly overlooked) albums on CD - this great POCO release is well worth checking out. Recorded in 1982 and 1984 these two albums highlight the craftmenship of POCO's original members Rusty Young and Paul Cotton.
While singer/songwriter and steel guitar player Rusty Young shines on some wonderful ballads ("This Old Flame" is great and "When Worlds Collide" should have been a huge hit), singer & guitarist Paul Cotton heads into rockier waters here. The bitter track "Days Gone by" will just blow your ears out, it's THAT good. Not all of the 20 tracks are in the same league (Brenda X is plainly awful and two or three other songs don't go anywhere), but that leaves you with at least 17 Counrtry/Rock masterpieces.
POCO purists will probably hate both original albums and snub at this CD, but anybody looking for some great music should not hesitate to order this bargain!
Paul Cotton becomes an artist.......2000-02-04
What listeners failed to realize at the time these albums were released (what few that paid attention) is that Paul Cotton, as a songwriter and recording artist, was outgrowing the oppressive country-rock leanings of Poco. It's on these tracks that he really became a truly great artist of the rock era.
Cotton's songwriting reflects a male's romantic heart better than anyone I have ever heard (I'm a musician and recording artist myself, albeit not close to Mr. Cotton's stature). His odes to love on tunes such as "Days Gone By" (incredible arrangement here) are so obviously heartfelt that they leave the realm of pop music and become true art, professionally crafted but always earnest and emotionally riveting.
I wholeheartedly recommend the "Inamorata" portion of this CD (though "Ghost Town" is fine as well), and also Cotton's only released solo CD to date, "Changing Horses" on the Sisapa label (extremely hard to find). This is some of Poco's finest work, and if you can stand songs of sorrow, lust, and yearning instead of hoedowns, you owe it to our self to check the tracks out ... cheap at THREE TIMES the price.
And one more point: Rusty Young isn't in the Guitar Player Hall of Fame for nothing!
Some of Poco's all-time best pop/rock songs.......1999-03-27
"Ghost town" title song is one of rock's true unknown classics; a mighty song. The rest of the album is nice soft rock; not Poco at its best, but still very enjoyable. "Inamorata" probably shocked some Poco fans. It has little common with "old" country-rock Poco sound. Instead, it's a brave dive into modern pop music. The songs are as good as always; a very underrated album very much wort listening!

Product Description
All the members of the .357 STring Band have been active members in the punk/rockabilly scene in the midwest for years before deciding to go bluegrass. Their Live show has been referred to as "Hoe-down meets Throw-down" by many reviewers.
The .357 STring Band's unique mash of punk and bluegrass echoes both old-school country and traditional mountain music, but the group is much harder to define than it might seem. The Milwaukee bands' amped-up, all acoustic sound has won praise from the purist likes of Wayne Hancock, and JD Wilkes of Those Legendary Shack Shakers. These boys have managed a sound all their own accomplishing the nearly impossible by bringing together scenesters from ALL genres.
Plucking banjos, spinning upright bass and blended harmonies arent what one would expect from this quartet, but that only adds to their allure.

Gilbert and Sullivan......In Tears.......2001-03-14
Once again we discover that amatures should not attempt to emulate what the classical artist "would" have wanted. This poor attempt at a "comical" view of the music of G&S only reiterates to this listener.....Don't Go There... I'm sorry I did and wish that the King's Singers......had never said..."Howdy Do", to me. Though I will keep searching for a true and respectful rendition of H.M.S. Fortunately, this version, makes a great coffee cup coaster......
An Eye-Opener!.......2000-06-23
This delightful album is the kind of work which will make the listener search for MORE by the artists and the composers. If you are not a fan of The Kings Singers, you will become one. If you don't know much Gilbert & Sullivan, you will want to learn! Highest praise.
The best of King's Singers meets the best of G&S.......1999-09-23
This one is a natural for me. The King's Singers are my favorite group, and Gilbert & Sullivan are my favorite shows. The King's Singers are the perfect group for G&S music, too, with their unique blend of serious musical study and just plain fun. Their medly and patter trio are two wonderfully crafted examples of G&S music, and the rest of the songs are very skillfully presented. I only wish this wonderful group would do another Gilbert & Sullivan recording.
looks pretty good.......1999-09-20
this looks pretty good, but i don't know because i haven't bought it ye
Amazing work from the worlds' foremost a cappella group........1999-08-29
As a lover of both G&S and the King's Singers, I was positively tickled by this wonderful recording. The King's Singers have managed to breath new life into songs that have sunken into obscurity, or worse, cliche'. "Pirate King", "Tit Willow", and "Here's a How-dee-Doo" are especially delightful. The tonal range of this group never fails to amaze me. From the sweetness of David Hurley on top to the astounding Stephen Connelly thundering forth as the Mikado, they are a joy to listen to.

A fun album..........2006-12-01
I bought this album a long time ago on vinyl, and while it's not exactly a 'must have' (except for Poco fans, of course), it's always a good album to play.
For the most part, it's a collection of jangly, upbeat, country-rock type of music, alternating between songs written by Paul Cotton and Rusty Young. "Shoot For The Moon" was the single, and it's got Rusty's patented ballad style and rough crooning voice all over it. If only it wasn't so short.
The title track is the most impressive song on the album, however. "Ghost Town" is a powerful, intense track with a haunting sound and lyrics and a good metaphor for lost love. This song alone is practically worth buying the album for (along with the cover art, which captures the same mood).
Still, an overall enjoyable collection of songs, and well-worth getting, even if you're not a Poco fan.
UNDERESTIMATED, AS USUAL.......2006-07-04
WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS ALBUM YEARS AGO, THE HARDCORE ENERGY OF IT TOOK ME COMPLETELY BY SURPRISE. HAVING BEEN A FAN OF POCO FOR A LONG TIME, FROM THE OLD DAYS OF RICHIE AND JIM, WAY BEFORE THE FUTURE EAGLE APPEARED, MY EARS HAD GOTTEN ALONG QUITE WELL WITH THE DOWN-HOME WHOLESOMENESS AND PLAIN GOOD SOUND OF POCO'S HONEST INSTUMENTALS AND TRADEMARK TIGHT VOCALISMS.
"GHOST TOWN" IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE "NEW" POCO SOUND. GONE IS THE "TWANG", IF YOU WILL. GONE ARE THE NOSTALGIC LYRICS OF RICHIE. THESE ARE MORE THAN ADEQUATELY REPLACED WITH THE SOOTHING CROONINGS OF TIMMY WHICH ARE SET WELL IN CONTRAST TO PAUL'S RAW VOCALS AND CENTERPIECE GUITAR WORK.
ALTHOUGH I DO MISS THE SHOWCASE STEEL GUITAR OF RUSTY YOUNG, THE MEMORY LINGERS, ESPECIALLY IN SONGS LIKE THE TITLE CUT WHERE STRINGS ARE USED QUITE EFFECTIVELY.
THIS IS COWBOY MUSIC, NOT COUNTRY, AND NOT COUNTRY ROCK. IT IS POCO. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF MORE PEOPLE WOULD GIVE POCO A CHANCE. IF YOU LIKE POCO, YOU'RE GONNA LOVE "GHOST TOWN".
Poco is always worth a listen...........2005-04-27
This was the first album Poco did for Atlantic and it was not bad at all. This was the same line up that started Poco's commercial streak in 1978 on the Legend album, and, given the band's penchant for playing personnel musical chairs, it was amazing they stuck together this long. I must have been one of the few who bought this album when it was released on vinyl, and I never had cause to regret it. Songs such as Who Will You Be Tonight only confirmed my belief that no matter who is in the line up, Poco was always capable of making very good (and most of the time, excellent) music. There are other great tunes, such as Shoot for the Moon, and the instrumental High Sierra. So,give this album a chance. And while you're at it, pick up thier latest studio release, Running Horse. If you have the slightest interest in Poco, or simply lost track of them after Legend, give Ghost Town a listen. If this is your type of music, you will not regret it.

Product Description
Contrary to popular belief ,Will Hawkins was not born in Nashville, Lubbock or on the side of some dirt road in Wyoming. He and his smooth, dark, moody twang were actually born on the banks of the Hudson River in the historic and haunted village of Sleepy Hollow, NY, home of the Headless Horseman and a crumbling Ford Motors Factory and is contributed to the old Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings records his parents played around the house as he grew up. Hawkins' new release, Ghost Town includes the web radio hit Johnstown, which has already been downloaded over 5000 times and has received nationwide airplay. His earnest and compelling songwriting style and passionate live performances have often been compared to John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle and Johnny Cash. Johnstown was written after an emotional USO sponsored performance at Walter Reed Army Hospital in DC. The song tells the tragic, yet inspiring story of how an injured Reservist returns home after his tour of duty in Iraq and comes to terms with how his injury and experiences on the battlefield has changed his life forever. You re gonna watch me bleed to what what you need, but baby I m Alive Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha was so moved and inspired by Will s song that it was incorporated in his re-election campaign rally in Johnstown this past fall which was televised nationally and attended by ex-senators Max Cleland and Bob Kerrey, Governor Edward Rendell and Murtha himself. His solo debut, NEXT STOP BEDFORD AVENUE (2003) was hailed by critics and fans alike as a powerful, melodic and insightful recording. He toured extensively through the North America received support on college and AAA and later took the U.K. by storm with airplay on BBC-2, BBC-4 and many web radio networks.
