Composer-arranger Johnny Richards created the music for this concept album, recorded in 1956. It required a very large band for its execution, combining Stan Kenton's usual brass emphasis with five Latin percussionists led by Willie Rodriguez on bongos. The results are admirable: music filled with heat and energy and sudden sharp contrasts in moods and voices. There are excellent solo contributions from a band that included trumpeter Sam Noto, trombonist Carl Fontana, and saxophonists Lennie Niehaus, Lucky Thompson, and Bill Perkins, but the real stars are Richards and the collective ensemble, who bring extraordinary precision and energy to a highly demanding score. The results are among the finest moments of Kenton's career, not only for the authentic use of Latin rhythmic elements but also for Richards's success in integrating extended composition techniques with jazz improvisers. The CD also includes five pieces by Richards and Gene Roland recorded in 1960 by the "Mellophonium" version of Kenton's orchestra. --Stuart Broomer

Two of my favorite albums are Stan Kenton's Birthday in Britain and Portraits on Standards, so I though I could not go wrong with this one based on the stellar reviews and the fact that I like latin-american music and jazz (and speak Spanish too).

Oh, how wrong I was. If you are in a busy latin-american city center, you will hear a lot of squealing tires and honking horns, and that is pretty much what you get here. The latin rhythyms are not very latin and not very rhythmic--certainly nothing to make you tap your toes or move your feet, let alone sway your hips. To make it worse, there are no great tunes either. Stan, what were you thinking?

Leave it alone. I wish I had. Or if you really want to hear it, take two Tylenol first.

Occasionally I'll buy something because it looks interesting, and this is one of those purchases. Maybe I'm just not ready for it, but it wasn't quite what I expected. Maybe it was a bit too orchestral, or not quite latin enough, I'm not sure. It's neither a love or hate. It's just there.

I bought this album in 1957. It's better today than it was almost 50 years ago. It's probably the only Kenton/Richards collaboration where the former relinquishes control.Richards makes his main statement here but he also shines on two other currently unavailable items; Something Else and Wide Range Cuban Fire is not only Kenton at his best but music at it's best. It's an inspirational piece.

While I have only recently become a Stan Kenton fan, I would recommend this album to ANYONE who appreciates jazz. It combines the hard-hitting brass that was Kenton's signature with the Latin rhythms (mentioned above) that swing nicely. The Johnny Richards arrangements and compositions really create an album that you will want to listen to all the way through -- LOUDLY! Critics held mixed views of some of Kenton's work, but I have yet to hear of anyone who would give this less than five stars.

If you have not yet listened to Stan Kenton, this is a great place to start. 'Cuban Fire' is energetic and innovative without going off the edge of experimentation. I have come to seriously enjoy Kenton's music on many albums, but this is good enough to be one of my 'desert island' selections. Even the bonus tracks are welcome, as they essentially maintain the style of the original album. Highly recommended.

Along with "Adventures in Jazz", this has to be one of Kenton's best albums. Jonny Richards comes up with a challenging, complex, and mindblowing score. It is just wonderful to listen to, the classic Kenton sound. There are some excellent soloists on the album as well; what I would give to be able to play like Carl Fontana does on Recuerdos. Just buy the album and listen for yourself.

For a long time, there has been a conception that white American boys are not known for being graceful, for being too shy or naive and when it comes to music, especially, not having enough soul in their playing. Well, as soon as you pop in your car this double-CD live concert package you will find out in no time that Cal Tjader was anything but shy or dull. With the enthusiastic support of his former boss and early pioneer in Latin jazz, the British jazz piano giant George Shearing, Tjader decided to tackle the challenge of melding American jazz with hot sizzling Afro-Cuban rhythms and continued to excel at it with great perseverance and confidence until his sudden in 1982 at 56. The CDs in this package are probably among the last three albums he ever made through his own recently inaugurated Concord Picante label (actually a subsidiary of Concord Records but headed by Tjader. They reveal a beautiful musical culmination of all the great accomplishments Tjader made in the realm of Latin jazz.During his last three years at Concord Picante (and of his life) he had hired great conga player Poncho Sanchez and the fantastic pianist Mark Levine (besides being a fantastic pianist for Tjader and others he has written probably the best in-depth textbook for all jazz piano students and other jazz instrumentalists who would like to have some jazz piano under their belt through Sher Publishing called THE JAZZ PIANO BOOK.)Gary Foster is particularly brilliant on soprano sax on several selections and alto sax on a few others (he also plays flute. "A Fuego Vivo" (Live Fire) is the first live CD in the package. Check out Gary Foster's alto sax solo on "Serenata", a rather old-fashioned tune made much hipper-sounding with a cha-cha-cha feeling by the Tjader outfit. Tjader's composition
"Mindanao" is a tremendously fiery outing for the leader himself on vibes, Levine on piano and Foster on sax. Check out Poncho Sanchez in a blistering conga display with Ramon Banda on timbales on "Poncho con dos Amigos" and a tremendously infectious 5/4 Latin groove on an old big band favorite, "The Continental". An amazing live performance that makes you wish you were there.
The same holds true for the second live CD "Good Vibes" featuring the most heated version of his signature tune "Soul Sauce" (Guachi Guara) displaying Tjader's fiery vibes and Levine as the montuno groove machine on piano. Really memorable. Another blazing performance is Mark Levine's composition, Shoshanna. What an amazing feature for Levine!!! Other highlights are Ray Bryant's "Cuban Fantasy" featuring Roger Glenn on a dazzling flute solo flight and finally a great blues in traditional Cuban son style featuring the leader and Levine. In short, these two performances at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and at the Concord Jazz Festival at the Concord Pavilion truly demonstrate that this white American of Swedish background could jump with the very best Latin jazz musicians ever. 5 stars.

This is an excellent peformance from one of the greatest modern latin jazz bands of our time. The style is a real nice blend of latin and post-bop jazz styles, not just your typical jazz riffs with the usual 2/3 conga and timbale accompaniment. Jerry places equal emphasis on melody and rhythm. The music is obvious in its influences from Monk, Miles Davis, and Joh Coltrane. There are 6 tracks, and the mood of the music is genrally dark, melancholic, but beautiful. One of the tracks is appropriately titled "Ugly Beauty." Half of the tracks are ballads, with one track just horn and piano, one of my favorites. 2 tracks feature more uptempo music with the Fort Apache signature arrangements, which are very unique afro-cuban rhythm sections while horn, sax, and piano solos take place. Jerry Gonzalez switches from horn to congas. One of the more unique aspects of the rhythm section is the drumming of Steve Berrios: his switching from typical jazz drumming on the snare and ride cymbal to the cowbell and hi-hat are incredibly innovative and infectious. You will fall in love with this band right away if you get this album, and, IMO, their very best. Track 5 is one of the greatest 15 minutes of music I have ever heard, execllent solos from everyone and includes a great bass solo from reknowned bass player Andy Gonzalez (Jerry's brother), and followed by a hard core African conga solo from Jerry. This is grade A stuff, you wont be disappointed. Just dont expect it to sound like salsa music without the singing, so if you wanna dance to something, this is not for you.

This is a sequel to 1998's Esta Noche En Una Rumba, and it's another profound investigation of the roots and possibilities of Afro-Cuban rhythms and the rumba tradition by producer Kip Hanrahan and drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. Hanrahan is a master at creating studio fireworks by mixing and matching percussionists. Here, he often has Hernandez and Robbie Ameen anchoring the rhythmic dialogue with two drum kits. He then adds congas, coros, and timbales and elaborates the seething, pulsating results with tenor saxophonist Charles Neville and several vocalists who cover the sensual and the ceremonial. Haila Monpie is especially good on the driving "Quimbara 2000." Along with the potent drum-centric tracks, a series of brief musical vignettes takes the CD in different directions. Xiomara Lougart's voice is breathily intimate on the unaccompanied "Besame Mucho," and there's warm tenor-bass dialogue between Neville and Andy Gonzalez on "Science of Voodoo." The concluding mix of telephone conversation and percussion sculptures signals another direction altogether. This is passionate, fiery work that plumbs a tradition and breaks new ground. --Stuart Broomer

You'll enjoy Deep Rumba if you're interested in the many styles of Latin music.
Excellent rhythms and percussion, a good choice for the percussionist in your life.
Lots of spacious melody lines and traditional vocal harmonies.
I play bass and I'm learning quite a bit about rhythm from these folk.

      This was the debut recital of the highly successful Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. If you can't stand the idea of hearing four guitars playing Falla or Copland, you might be as surprised as I was by how well they work in practice. The reasons are imaginative transcribing work and the heads-up, exciting playing of the ensemble. All of the original works for guitar quartet are worthwhile. Sciammarella's and Brouwer's are both downright pretty, while Krouse makes an intriguing blend of Renaissance and contemporary styles. There should have been more music on this disc, but what's here is highly enjoyable. --Leslie Gerber

      The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet began in 1980 as a student quartet at the University of Southern California. Still going strong today, it's the world's best known and most successful guitar ensemble. This 1987 recording showcases the quartet's rhythmically taut and vivid style.

            Album Description

            Part of Snapper Music's reissue series for one of the world's leading Latin labels throughout the 70s, Coco Records. Machito, along with Tito Puente & Celia Cruz, was one of the longest established stars of Afro Cuban music & the first to incorporate jazz into his music. Dominating New York's Latin music scene from the 40's onwards, he was also an early Latin influence on jazz. The Grammy-nominated 'Fireworks' was Machito's sole album for Coco & was released in 1977. Under the musical direction of his son, Mario, it also features a special guest appearance by the highly talented Lalo Rodriguez, who sings lead on four of the albums tracks.
