The New Orleans-born Michael "Patches" Stewart has been a session man supreme. He played on the 1975 LaBelle classic, "Lady Marmalade," and he's worked with everybody, from Quincy Jones to Al Jarreau. On his new CD, Stewart turns over the producer chair to his long-time partner, bassist/multinstrumentalist Marcus Miller, who produced some of Miles Davis's last recordings. Trumpetwise, Stewart is closer to Tom Brownethan to Clifford Brown, so he's at home in the smooth jazz category. Another Miles alumnus, alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett delivers some laser licks on the bouncy title tune, with beats by DJ Quik. Vocalist Will Downing drops his beautiful baritone on the quiet storm cut, "Don't You Know," and rapper MC Lyte displays her verbal skills on "Cruisin'." Stewart successfully upgrades the Wes Montgomery hit "Road Song," Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed," and Herbie Hancock's "[Tell Me a] Bedtime Story" for the IPOD generation. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

I guess it's finally come out........2007-06-28

I like to think I was one of the first ever Metric fans. I saw them live in Toronto in August of 2001. At that time, they'd only played a handful of gigs and this is the album they were plugging (their first). Nobody knew who they were. After the show, I met them and got their autographs because I knew they'd become famous. Anyway, I became a member of their fanclub and they sent me a free CD with a lot of these songs on it. About a year later, they'd gotten a little more recognition and I bought the Static Anonymity EP from their new website which featured some more songs from this collection as well as a couple of songs not included here. This album never came out until now. I already have all of these songs. They originally come from that free CD they sent me in 2001 or the Static Anonymity EP from 2002. So I don't really need to buy this one, but I will anyway because I think it's the best way to close a chapter that was left unfinished for the longest time.

Stands the Test of Time.......2007-06-26

Does anyone remember the i-Zone? It was a little Polaroid camera that could print little messages on the instant photo. That was the gimmick, and quite unsurprisingly, it failed miserably. However, the North American television ads that accompanied this sure-fire failure contained a hidden gem. Floating in the background was a woman singing, "If this is the life, why does it feel so good to fly away?" The woman was Emily Haines, the band was Metric, and the song was a TV-friendly version of "Grow Up and Blow Away," the title track to their ill-fated debut album. Originally recorded in 2001 (or 1999, depending on your source), the album features Metric as a two-piece and was delayed again and again by their record label until it was finally shelved to make room for "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" Six years later, and the album is finally being dusted off. Is it worth the wait?

Absolutely! "Grow Up and Blow Away" is immediately captivating, thanks to the lead-off and title track. The lyrics are back in their original form, Emily singing "Why does it feel so good to die today?" One of the things that's instantly noticeable is that Metric as a two-piece is a much more toned-down affair. With just James and Emily, the songs are often just comprised of a drum machine and synthesizer. The result is a Metric that is just as awesome as their current incarnation, just less chaotic.

It's all still really cool music though. "Rock Me Now" features a funky musical accompaniment and finds Emily merely speaking throughout its playtime. It's actually James that does all the singing on the song, which is quite a shock to hear. At the same time, it's an undeniably cool song, making you feel like throwing on your MIB-shades and bobbing your head uncontrollably. "The Twist" is another great song that utilizes an almost hip-hop beat. In the chorus, when James and Emily are harmonizing with each other, it's absolutely beautiful. It makes me wish that more of this will happen on future Metric albums, though the actual chances of this are slim.

Though hints of their current new wave sound are apparent throughout the album, the majority of "Grow Up and Blow Away" feels much more like a straightforward pop album than anything else. "Raw Sugar," for example, has a Corrine Bailey Rae-esque musical accompaniment and features Emily singing "I don't want to die living in a high-rise grave" in a very soulful way. It's very un-Metric like, but at the same time, it's still a really great song. "White Gold" is another un-Metric song, sounding more like it could've been ripped off of Emily's solo album, "Knives Don't Have Your Back" if it weren't for the harmonies and non-minimal production.

In the end, "Grow Up and Blow Away" is an album that all Metric fans should definitely check out. Though it peaks at the very first song, you'd be a fool to stop listening there. Even in their early history as a band, Metric shows an uncanny ability to craft brilliantly infectious pop songs that will stick with you for weeks and weeks. Although the sound of the album has a definite early-2000s feel to it, most of these songs stand the test of time (unlike the i-Zone). It may have taken six years to hit the shelves, but "Grow Up and Blow Away" is well worth the wait.

Recommended for fans of Metric and anyone who still rocks the i-Zone like it's 1999!

This is not a new album by any means. This is the first album Metric ever made and it was largely underground until now that it has been redone and repackaged (with some extra songs thrown in to keep the fans happy).

Grown up, but not blown away.......2007-06-26

Like many a hit indie band, Metric recorded songs before they hit it big with "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" In this case, it's "Grow Up and Blow Away" -- which despite its "early stuff" label has musical polish and maturity, and an enigmatic twist that keeps their sprightly jazz-flavoured pop fresh.

A child's voice says "Grow up, and blow away." That's the springboard to a tangle of sensual synth twists wrapped around some solid riffs and beats. Emily Haines murmurs a bittersweet song -- alcoholism, disillusionment, and having a child without regard of where it will be: "If this is the life/why does it feel/so good to die today?... nobody knows which street to take/he took the easy way/what was the easy way?"

Things get more uptempo with the jazzy-pop vibe of "Hardwire," all about "leaving behind the basement life," and apparently trying to start a band. Then Metric slips into a series of polished pop tunes: retro-flavoured beats, sexy noir tunes, delicate electronic tunes, sweeping piano balladry, and combos of all the above.

"Grow Up and Blow Away" has a tumultuous history -- the label diddled around with it, and then the band decided that fans wouldn't like it. So it took six to eight years to hear Metric's initial take on electropop, flavoured with different sounds that faded away in subsequent albums.

The most relevant sound is jazz, which is hardly surprising as Haines is the daughter of a jazz musician. They have the basic indiepop staples -- piano, solid drums and guitar, and Haines provides swirls, bubbles and wobbles of synth. But where their last album was laced with blazing rock'n'roll, Metric infuses their new album with a heavy jazz influence, with a little bit of funk.

And Haines herself sounds like a young girl who's seen too much real life -- her voice is high and sweet, but she sings enigmatic songs of disillusionment, tormented minds, and living in a "high rise grave." The happiest ones seems to be all about touring and travelling ("I should be living/Giving my mind a chance to rewind/And playback beautiful music...").

Metric has grown up but thankfully not blown away just yet, and their previously unreleased first album shows why. Striking, memorable, and beautifully polished.

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Richard Rodgers always considered Carousel his favorite score, even though it didn't generate the number of popular hits of some of the other shows he produced with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Their adaptation of the Ferenc Molnar play Liliom is marked by three especially sublime moments. "The Carousel Waltz," Rodgers's alternative to the traditional Broadway overture, serves as an orchestral backdrop to the opening scene and is one of the best miniatures ever written for the theater. "If I Loved You," which establishes the romance of carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae, a late replacement for Frank Sinatra) and nice girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), is a musical minidrama in which the pair's discussion of how they are not in love reveals just how much they are in love. "Soliloquy" is Billy's powerful solo that foreshadows the action to come in Act II. Add the inspirational anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone," and you have Rodgers and Hammerstein's most extraordinary, near-operatic score. On the soundtrack for the 1956 film, MacRae and Jones are in exceptional voice (following their success in 1955's Oklahoma) and the orchestra sounds glorious, but unfortunately some of the numbers were shortened, most notably "If I Loved You." MacRae and Jones soar in this tragic R&H musical.......2007-02-11

This film adaptation of Carousel came shortly after the Oklahoma! film and reunited Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Although the film was not well-received at the box office, the soundtrack shows MacRae, Jones and the superb cast performing their roles to their heart's content. Their performance helps bring out the pathos in this tragic R&H musical, which Rodgers himself considered his favourite of all his works.

MacRae shines vocally as Billy Bigelow, bringing an open-hearted musicality and sincerity to his stout-hearted portrayal. MacRae stands out in Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, which some reviewers have considered one of the finest vocal performances of the 20th century. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones, who lends her tender voice and personality to her portrayal as Julie. Listen to the chemistry they exude during the pivotal If I Loved You duet, as if they're overcoming their shyness and drawing sustenance from each other with their love. The supporting cast also gives its all in performing their roles. Claramae Turner's hearty Nettie brims with sincerity, warmth and tenderness, and she leads a rousing rendition of June is Bustin' Out All Over and renders You'll Never Walk Alone touchingly. Barbara Ruick and Robert Rounseville are superb as Carrie and Mr. Snow, although I admit I would have liked a little more humour. I also admit I would have liked Cameron Mitchell as Jigger to sound more sinister, like Fisher Stevens did in the 1994 Broadway revival recording. But even as it is, everyone sings gloriously and is given sumptuous backing from Alfred Newman's superb arrangements and the 20th-Century Fox Orchestra, when it shines out in the ballets.

If I'm adding to the praise of these critic-proof performance, you'll wonder, why am I giving only 4 stars? Well, it's because the extra sound effects from the unreleased sequences tend to jar after a while. I know some of you are complaining that the dance sequences are plagued by extraneous sound effects and noise. I share the same feelings too and also wish that the producers had utilised the original studio pre-recordings for a sumptuous listening experience. However, let us at least be grateful that Didier Deutsch and his production team have made these unreleased sequences available on a soundtrack CD reissue. At least it's a step in the right direction before the entire canon of R&H film soundtracks (yes, including South Pacific and The Sound of Music) gets its due as deluxe 2-CD sets, complete with underscore.

However, don't let this gripe dissuade you from buying this soundtrack. It offers a complete musical experience that one could only dream of in the previous CD reissues of the soundtrack. And it demonstrates the element that Rodgers & Hammerstein were discovering in their musicals.

Rogers and Hammerstein were in a different league when it came to writing musicals. Their music, lyrics and story are never alike. These two partners were exceptional and their music shows it. Carousel is a tragic story but also shows that human nature can rise above adversity. The music is wonderful and the characters believable. A great movie.

Gummed up an Original.......2003-06-10

This overblown "completeitis" has got to stop. The original soundtrack album Carousel Waltz is now relegated to Appendix status, and terrible sonics accompany dancers' footstomping in the "new" expanded musical sequences, taken directly from the soundtrack rather than from still-existing musical tracks. There was a reason soundtrack recordings were studio performances. The proportions were right, the timings were correct for an overall BALANCED listening experience. These gawdawful expanded editions, often with dialogue thrown in, completely throw off those balances. An argument might be made for expanded sequences appropriate to a CDs longer playing time than the standard L.P. 45min., but possibly only if those sequences are from their original studio-recorded, pre release-print mix -- which could have easily been done in this case. A quick word on one of the above reviews: This is not the first time the complete Carousel Waltz is heard in stereo. There were two previous CD remasterings of the original soundtrack whereon it was included. And the reprise of "If I loved You" was part of every soundtrack release, mono and stereo.

Beck is AWESOME. One of the most underrated guitarists I've heard...ever! He's definitely every bit as good as (and probably better than) Vai, Satriani, or Wylde. Beck has proven throughout the course of his career that he is talented, flexible in his style, and can play just about any type of music...WELL!

This is a "must have" CD for anyone who loves to hear a great guitarist and appreciates the complexities and nuances of what is going on with the instrument during the song, regardless of the type of music. I would also highly recommend Jeff Beck "Guitar Shop" and "You Had it Coming".

'One' of the best guitar master works, ever........2007-06-23

Ok, so after just receiving my long awaited copy of "Blow by Blow", Digitally Remastered, Reissued and Remixed by George Martin my vote is final. This is `one' of the all-time best guitar master works ever. "Scatterbrain", "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", "Freeway Jam" and of course "Diamond Dust" being the highlights. The other trac's are also very worthy grooves on this CD. The playback on a pro rig is incredible but if you have no perks as a professional it also sounds great on my iPod ripped in high-res. :-) Listen to the complete work.

I don't know much about Jeff Beck. I know he's listed as a highly innovative guitarist with a distinct sound, and that Rod Stewart used to be the lead singer in the older version of his band. I also know he's supposedly a hard person to get along with, which explains all the lineup changes over the years. Ritchie Blackmore had the same problem with the band Rainbow. No two Rainbow albums are alike because of that.

Anyway, since I know very little about this underrated guitar genius, I told myself "It's time to buy something... how about Blow By Blow?" Good choice? Yes! I also had friends who helped influence my decision to check out his stuff.

Let's be completely honest- even though "Freeway Jam" and "You Know What I Mean" are the popular songs on the album, you won't hear those songs on regular FM radio. Maybe back in the day, when this album was brand new, those songs would be played. No longer, unfortunately.

Really, my impression of Beck based on this experience was a very guitar-dominated album, with the occasional touches of slow blues, but mostly focusing on lengthy jams. There are some moments of funk and jazz, but those don't happen very often.

It's definitely not a typical guitar instrumental album, because of Beck's talent for throwing in dazzling little touches here and there. I actually love the music though, and repeated listens reveals a very spectacular and worthy album overall.

Blow by Blow (1975) Jeff Beck's fifth studio album.

After a brief but potential stint with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice in '73 and '74, Jeff finally went out on his own. The 'Jeff Beck Group' was finally at an end, and Beck knew that he would be going solo from now on. The result was a complete turn-around from his normal material, but that didn't bring it down in the slightest. In fact, it helped to develop his sound in a new way; he took on a new genre of music and made it his own. The sound is very distinct, as it is on the follow-up album "Wired". But what happened here in 1975 was nothing short of spectacular, and it stands as one of the finest and best-selling instrumental albums of all time, climbing the charts to hit an incredibly respectable number four.

Though every track here is outstanding, there are a few that absolutely blow you away. The starter, "You Know What I Mean", is a funky, jazz-rooted song that lures you into what this album is all about. Beck doesn't waste time to impress you. Solos sear across this first song which also features some very neat drum work. Three tracks that follow after this, "Constipated Duck", "Air Blower", and "Scatterbrain", are all genius, diving into a mix of rock and fusion, taking the jaziness of it and throwing it all around. All of these appear frequently in the sets that Mr. Beck does live.

The next and most famous track, "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", is Beck's signature song. No one dares to cover this song because they know that they can't do it better than Jeff. He makes his guitar cry. It pleads, weeping and wailing, yet it sighs so softly. It is incredible the amount of control that Beck demonstrates with his Stratocaster on this song. Another standout is "Freeway Jam", which has remained a radio staple for several years. Overall, this album is a must-have to anyone who is considering even looking to play a guitar. Instrumental albums don't get much better than this, and even Beck, in all his greatness, has found it difficult to produce another album of this calibre. Five stars up and away.

what's a saco player.......2007-02-08

I gave this to my kid for christmas, and he never opened it until today. But the bad news it doesn't work on any of the players we have at home. It clearly says on the cover SACD surround sound "Plays only on". wow. I never heard of that. Any suggestions? It doesn't say that it requires a special player on the ad. Very disappointed.

i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age. two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car. she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd. during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

Mesmerized and moved mom to tears.......2005-01-26

This CD is awesome, the music great, the story captivating. But it's Mozart, you already know about the music. Other reviewers have already discussed the story and I agree with their assessments that it's very good. The reason for this review is to say that my very active, never stopping, constantly in motion 5 year old SAT DOWN AND LISTENED without fidgeting or fiddling for a full 20 minutes and then sat but fiddled for the remainder of the CD. Maybe this is not a big deal to moms of "normal" energy level children -- but this simple act of being still for 20 minutes moved me to tears. I said nothing before putting the CD in, I just put it in while he was doing his running around. Within seconds of hearing the story start he sat down on the floor, crossed his legs, and listened while looking at the speakers. I have never seen this behavior from my child before, ever. Please note that this is a child who is not ADD, he just cannot be still. He listens to hundreds of hours of stories we read to him -- while he's doing something else. He "watches" videos -- while he's doing something else. He reads, while clapping or tapping out the beat of the syllables. I cannot remember my child ever stopping what he was doing to JUST LISTEN. When it was over he said, "That was a cool story," and got up to run around. That was it, but that's high praise from this child. To see my child sitting still for a full 20 minutes, you cannot begin to imagine my awe. I am running right out to get the rest of the series! Bravo to the producers!

After supplying something known as "additional music" to many films since the late 1990s, Steve Jablonsky seems to have become the go-to composer for director-producer Michael Bay. Jablonsky's score for Bay's sci-fi thriller The Island shows the influence of its producer, Hans Zimmer. "The Island Awaits You" sets up the mood, which is oddly muted for a movie directed by explosion-master Bay. Even a track titled "Mass Vehicular Carnage" is merely ominously low-key, oddly sounding like something by dank trip-hopper Tricky. Elsewhere, the electronic number "Starkweather" successfully creates a feeling of oppressive tension before integrating elements of the main theme. Unfortunately, in his effort to avoid big ka-booms, Jablonsky can be overly subdued; while nothing is jarring, nothing makes much of an impression either. Actually, there is one jarring thing on this CD, and it's the Prom Kings' nu metal/funk hybrid "Blow," tacked on at the end like an afterthought. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

There's only one coherent actual song on this CD. The rest is just a collection of sound effects and short music bits. If you want that one song, the nice one at the very end, fine, but it's too bad there aren't more like it. I think they could have done better. I remember liking the movie soundtrack a lot - I don't think it translates very well to CD, though.

Stunningly good Score!.......2006-11-10

This is a hauntingly good score to a pretty darned good film, which for whatever whim of the masses was less than well received. I you like taiko drums, fast paced and wonderfully executed "world beat" music, this is definitely the score for you, I've played it again and again and it only gets better with each listening.

Track 14 / Worth the price of the CD.......2006-11-04

I agree with other reviewers here -- much of the music on the CD is simply supplemental to the film, is forgetable, nothing really stands out, there is a lack of melody. Only one track (# 14) "My Name is Lincoln" -- stands apart, offering a theme, melody, choir and resolution -- it is a signature bit of composing that, for me, is really worth the price of the CD.

A few standout tracks, but difficult to recommend on the whole........2006-10-27

I'm afraid to say that I find this CD somewhat difficult to recommend as a whole. Steve Jablonsky is a prodigiously talented composer with a bright future; as his score to 'Steamboy' and trailer music and additional themes for Pearl Harbor attests. And although Jablonsky has done his job well here - the Island score works splendidly in the film - on CD the persistent throbbing electronica and pervasive percussion comes off so harshly as to the point of being too abrasive for the listen to be enjoyable (and I'm a big fan of electronica!)

In comparison to something like Spy Game by Harry Gregson-Williams, which is a deep, subtle and nuanced electronic score, the Island is stark and aggressive, with much repetition, few discernable themes, and occasional sequences of outright garish and incoherent noise generated mostly by garbled electric guitars. With all this in mind, I feel the CD generally hovers around the two star mark.

However, there are a couple of BIG standout moments; namely 'The Island' theme itself; first featured on the opening track, and then later on track 10 and elsewhere, has a beautiful, haunting, ethereal quality to it, reminiscent of the opening minute of 'Injection' from the M:I-2 score. Similarly, 'This Tongue Thing's Amazing' and 'You Have a Special Purpose in Life' have long, stretches of warm orchestral music that are decidedly enjoyable and memorable.

Finally - and most importantly - the finale, 'My Name is Lincoln' is such a standout track that it deserves special attention. It's a warm, uplifting, inspiring theme which borrows heavily upon Gladiator's 'Now We Are Free', but with an epic choral backing which pushes it to even greater heights. It's incredible, probably one of my top 10 favourite film score tracks of all time, seriously.

If ever there was an album that you should consider purchasing as individual mp3 tracks, this one is it - a purchase of tracks 1, 2, 6, 10 and 14 will pretty much cover 95% of all the good bits.

Blow your face out! J. Geils Band.......2007-02-15

An apt salute to the six studio albums of boogie rock that the J. Geils Band had recorded between 1970-1975, this 1976 live extravaganza showcases the band at their best--performing live! It is also a capable followup to 1972's Full House, which remains one of the best live recordings of any American band in the 20th century!
Released at a time when live albums were big sellers (Frampton Come Alive, Kiss Alive, i.e.), this underated gem gives the band a chance to deliver their best songs with irreverent energy and unstoppable rythym that'll have you dancing within the first two minutes of the opening "Southside Shuffle" till the last chords of "Give it to Me"
Some may find Peter Wolf's banter a bit lengthy and/or annoying in between many songs on Blow Your Face Out! Others may find Wolf's pre-rap, D.J.'ish chatter a novelty....Either way it's in-your-face fun!

Classic Geils.......2007-01-12

The quintiscential Geils band live album. If you grew up in the seventies, this was the party album. Good sound and great energy.

This album has great energy and captures the 'Live' J Geils Band experience very nicely. There is no comparison to actually seing this band live, but this (along with their "Full House" album) is as close as your ever going to get. I highly recommend it!

J Geils Ultimate Live Record.......2006-12-02

In the history of the J Geils Band, "Blow Your Face Out" is their definitive live work. This record came as their Atlantic years were ending. No one knew but soon the EMI America years would start and the fame of the band would be achieved but, at the time of "Blow Your Face Out", Geils was still struggling to become the great success they later attained. So, we can look at "Blow Your Face Out" as their summing up of their struggling years and showing the road warrior mentality and experience that all those years can provide on a record.

It's full of their old material and captures their well known knack as a live band. As someone who saw the band in that era, this live record is as close as it gets to having been at a show in the 70's.

"Monkey Island" was their final studio record for Atlantic but, in reality, "Blow Your Face Out" was their real swan song to their past at that point and shows a glimpse of the greatness that was to soon come at EMI America.

Buy the record. You'll love it.

Low energy........2006-07-13

Being a huge fan of J. Geils' "Full House," I was encouraged by some reviews here to believe that "Blow Your Face Out" was a similar live effort. But the only similarity is that they were both recorded live. "Blow Your Face Out" is funky and laid back. Not bad, if that's what you want. But anyone expecting something along the lines of Full House will be tremendously disappointed. In fact, "Lookin' For Love," which will knock your socks off on "Full House," is done as a slow, elavator Muzac tune in "Blow Your Face Out." Why did they even bother?

The energy level, which is consistently frenzied on Full House, rarely gets above "low" on "Blow Your Face Out." After listening to it twice, I realized there is no song on it that I want to hear again. Not that aren't a couple good songs on it. There just are no high energy songs other than House Party. I wasted my money.

Album Description

The Blow's songs are light enough to sail easily through the air, landing simultaneously on the turntable of a London DJ, in your mom's car stereo, and in the iPod of a middle schooler in study hall. However, they're somehow heavy enough to stick around, laying in your mind long after their new album is over. No-wave and glitch-hop, club anthems, and doo-wop all party together in the architecture created by The Blow's sound.

haven't stopped listening to this fabulous CD since i got it 2 months ago...brilliant songwriting, fast and fun beats and melodies...can't say there ain't one song on here that i think "blows"...love it!!!

There's something fresh about the Blow that won't blow away. This isn't the type of music I normally listen to, but something here caught me. There's a unique sound that isn't derivative that I would be the poorer had I not heard it. I agree with the opinions of the 3 star reviewer below me to a large extent, but I'm a bit more generous, probably because I saw Khaela live and in spite of myself thoroughly enjoyed it.

Moments of brilliance.......2007-01-29

Paper Television is good enough to make you hope that The Blow's upcoming album will be better. Unlike the hostile reviewer below, I felt that Khaela Maricich's vocals perfectly blend cool detachment with barely-supressed but genuine emotions. The musical arrangments, as well, show a hip but not hipster sensibility, and both music and vocals also reveal an underlying sense of humor that makes this a good listen. Which brings us to the lyrics...

At their best, songs like Parentheses, Babay, and True Affection provide intelligent pop pleasures and clever-w/out-cute lyrical surprises. At their worst, songs like Long List of Girls and Bonjour Jeune Fille feel like bad high school poetry.

The overall result is frustrating, because The Blow's arrangements are such that the lyrics stand front and center, so the weaker material cannot hide. Quite the opposite - it scratches through like nails on a chalkboard. The good songs are truly enjoyable though. Hopefully their upcoming album will offer greater lyrical balance to support the duo's basic musical strengths.

With wonderful vocals riding in and out of the lo-fi electro loops, Maricich approaches pop in both style and content, while keeping us just off balance. The tracks, like her voice, tease by touching love and sex without following through in any predictable way. A lovely frisson.

Who blew the rhythm away?.......2007-01-13

This album blows. At least the artists got the name right. I really hope "ReaderWriter" is a stooge for the record company behind this crap cause if a person honestly believes this is the future of music, cut off my ears. The chick's voice has no passion, the beats are unmelodic and off-rhythm. I felt like I would rather asphyxiate myself with stale horse farts than continue listening to 9 of the 10 tracks. Please, let all copies of this album be burned immediately (ReaderWriter can be our kindling).
