About the Artist
Whether you've heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 17 CD's as a leader to date) or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and Kevin Mahogany, you know why Gary Giddins in The Village Voice calls him "one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years." He was voted one of the Top Ten Guitarists in the 2001 Downbeat Magazine Critics and Readers Poll and a Rising Star in the 2004 Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll.

Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. After establishing himself in the local music scene, he joined organist Jack McDuff's group in 1984 and toured the U.S. for two years. Stryker played with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine from 1986 to 1995, performing at major festivals, concert halls and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CDs and played with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard during this period.

Dave has released 17 CDs as a leader, mostly on the SteepleChase label. Blue to the Bone III was voted one of the top CD's of 2002 by WBGO, the top jazz station in the New York City area, and by JazzReview.com.

Dave released two CDs in 2004 - Trio Mundo Rides Again on Zoho and Shades Beyond, featuring drummer Lenny White, on SteepleChase.

Stryker has recorded and published over eighty of his own compositions. Other artists who have recorded his music are Stanley Turrentine, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, Steve Slagle and Ultrablue.

Dave continues to perform with longtime-partner Steve Slagel in their working unit, The Stryker / Slagle Band. His other current projects include The Blue to the Bone Band, The Shades Project with Lenny White, and his latest group Trio Mundo, featuring Manolo Badrena on percussion and vocals and Andy McKee on bass. Recent gigs for The Stryker / Slagle Band have included the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Blue Note in Las Vegas, The Jazz Bakery in LA, and a 2003 tour of Japan.

In addition to private lessons, Dave teaches at Outreach Jazz Workshop in Austria, the Litchfield Jazz Fest Summer Music School and the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop.

Product Description
One of the hippest, hardest swinging guitarists on the jazz scene, Dave Stryker has placed his signature warm-toned, blues-drenched lines (played on his Gibson 347 semi-hollow body guitar) in a wide variety of contexts as a leader on 18 recordings. A prolific composer and potent player with a penchant for bop, ballads and blues, Stryker has incorporated such important (and wildly diverse) six-string influences as Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Grant Green, Sonny Sharrock and Albert King into a highly personalized guitar vocabulary while also reflecting the inspiration of such immortal composers as Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk. On Big City, Styker is reunited with the stellar drummer (and fellow Omaha native) Victor Lewis, who appeared on the guitarist’s 1992 release, Guitar On Top. He is also joined by bassist Ed Howard and pianist Dave Kikoski in a program of swinging originals and savvy covers. From the introduction by Bill Milkowski

Powerfully rendered and enthusiastically received by the crowd at New York's Supper Club, this collection of Duke Ellington favorites is worthwhile for its buoyant spirit and execution. It's a session where, like most of Ellington's, multiple soloists get to sound off in a three-minute span, creating an atmosphere where economy in individual expression is a must. So on "C Jam Blues," long associated with Ellington's favorite alto saxophonist, Johnny Hodges, Wynton Marsalis yields the floor to fellow trumpeter Marcus Printup, who in turn yields to tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding, and so on. Further, the band avoids trying to echo Hodges's alto to make the tune more Ellingtonian. The group is content to shuffle through it in its own manner, sounding frequently more like a bluesy Basie band than an Ellington outfit. No matter, though, since this is ultimately a fun recording, packed with solid band workouts and even handsomely presenting vocalists Milt Grayson on "Multi Colored Blue" and Dianne Reeves on "Bli Blip." But it's not ultimately the swinging tunes, best of which here are "Cottontail" and "Harlem Air Shaft," that make this a genuinely important look at Ellington. It's the band's reflective take on Billy Strayhorn's "Chinoiserie," replete with Blanding's smart solo. Or maybe it is "Cottontail," with Illinois Jacquet's wingspread solo with its mix of gutbucket pocks and slurry wisps. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Neo-Ellingtonian masterpiece.......2006-07-20

Wynton Marsalis' work with Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra seems to be just one of many aspects of his immense contribution to modern jazz, but that's not really essential for this hard swinging and inventive tribute to Ellington. This is just a brilliant CD.
Admittedly, few songs do sound corny and imitative at few points (Black and Tan Fantasy, for instance), but these same songs at the very next moment disperse the shade of cliche or routine by incredible soloing and ensemble work.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Interpretation of Duke's Best.......2004-12-23

I bought this CD three years ago, looking for music by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (I had just discovered them then). What a great first choice!! The group (headed by Wynton Marsalis) truly captured, in this writer's humble opinion, the spirit of the music of one of the truly great American composers. The Duke would be happy and pleased to sit in with this bunch of top-flight cats!

If you are truly in love with the music of Duke Ellington as I am, don't hesitate to buy this CD.

Duke lives!

5 out of 5 stars wynton marsalis solos on 2 tracks.......2003-06-29

there are 11 tracks on this cd. i thought i was buying a cd of
wynton marsalis playing (with the orchestra), but he only solos on 2 tracks. he shares solos with several others on 4 tracks. and on 5 of the tracks he doesn't get a mention at all (in the liner notes). don't get me wrong though ... try holding your foot still while listening to it, if you can.

5 out of 5 stars Swingin with Wynton & Friends.......2002-08-29

The lincoln center Jazz Orchestra has gotten a lot of attention recently and rightly so. Listening to them will bring a smile to your face. The energy level of this CD is amazing, the performances are breathtaking. I've been listening to it for a few years now, and just love it. My kids (2 & 4) love to dance to it too! If you get a chance to see them live, don't miss it, regardless you must own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars I NEVER WANTED THIS ALBUM TO END! -- Brilliant!.......2002-05-15

Hey, do you remember the opening SOUNDS you heard while watching "The Cotton Club" movie? Remember during the credits how the opening song mushroomed into such a realistic jazz-listening experience?

WELL, that's WHAT YOU GET WITH THIS ALBUM. This is simply one of the most best performed, classic-jazz sound LIVE "encounters" that you can experience. With EVERY SONG, you just don't want them to ever end! And the solos are amazing, especially Wynton and his fellow trumpet players! Then there are the sax solos, the piano solos... well, I rate it all a 10!

The audio fidelity is super clean, with a very realistic live ambience. I'll often listen to this CD on "whole disc repeat" -- and will never tire of it. With a few exceptions most of the songs running time is between 3 to 4 minutes, yet you really wished they lasted much, much longer - it's just such awesome JAZZ!

It is THIS live album that I ask my friends to hear, and (with all respect as to race) this CD is proof that Negro (African-American) musicians are unequaled in the talent of writing and performing American jazz! I also recommend the live performances by the Duke himself.

"One of the best big band records I've heard in a long time." -TERRY GIBBS

Eclectic, modern big band jazz with influences from the `60s and `70s, this is music in the writing style of Gil Evans, Thad Jones, McCoy Tyner or Jaco Pastorius. The Thrasher Big Band has backed up jazz legends Terry Gibbs, Clark Terry, James Moody and Jon Hendricks. With five great originals, this disc covers everything from bebop and straight-ahead jazz to avant-garde and world music.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific CD.......2006-11-03

A terrific CD, it rocks! This IS a Big Band album, which by its very nature is a very traditional sound, and this album is that. But it is also a modern and cutting edge jazz recording with some very tight vocals. Quite frankly, it's just a lot of fun to which to listen.

4 out of 5 stars A great club setting .......2005-12-20

Although this series came in for some severe scrutiny as bootlegs and bad sound quality, it matters not to me!

I never got the chance to experience Jaco live, and being a player myself, I relish any type of chance to hear him.

For a trio Setting, they don't half fill out the place!

Jaco's kicks off with the usual out of this world bop improvs and legendary scale asscension. 'Teen Town' really smokes, and hearing him sing on one of the tracks is rather upsetting because you can hear the meleancholy in his voice.

My fave here is the not so used 'Straight Life,' which really gives off a groove. These Live in NYC issues are, indeed, history.

5 out of 5 stars The best in the Live in NYC series.......2005-03-06

This is pure Jaco. He is improvising, quoting some of his trademark licks, playing some remarkable bebop lines, displaying his command of harmonics, cranking the distortion on The Star Spangles Banner (a la Jimi Hendrix), Ripping through his incredible arrangement of The Beatles 'Blackbird', and putting a cap on things with his glorious version of Amerika.
This is just track 1!!!...enter Hiram Bullock, and Victor Lewis for a fascinating representation of Once Upon A Time In New York.
History indeed!

5 out of 5 stars True punk jazz.......2003-10-28

Most people really don't understand the words punk jazz. Jaco wasn't just all about expensive recording studios or technical playing. Jaco was about the music, and on this album he is proving it. If you are into jazz, funk, improvisation, or if you just love music, get vol 7, the birthday concert, and vol 5. That is the closest you are ever going to get to Jaco without meeting him in person. Otherwise, you can waste your time looking for one of his albums with the best studio quality, or the most technical playing on it.

2 out of 5 stars There are better recordings..........2002-11-07

While I own all seven volumes of the Live in New York City series, I have to say that it seems like volumes 6 and 7 were scraping the bottom of the barrel of Neil Weiss's recordings. You would be better served buying Vols. 2, 4 and 5 for a really nice cross-section of Jaco's small club recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Forget what you,ve heard!.......2000-02-28

This is the latest in a series of recordings made of Jaco Pastorius in various New York venues which has been released by Big World Records. Now this series has received alot of flack in the press, ranging from the legality of the recordings to the less than hi-fidelity sound. Granted, these recordings were made using a portable DAT recorder and stereo mike by the "producer" Neil Weiss as he sat at one of the tables in the club. Hardly top of the line recording techniques. However I must say, many of my favorite jazz recordings from the 50's and 60's have far inferior sound than this series of cd's. That fact does not keep me from enjoying them. The bottom line is this: these recordings were made for those of us who are already Jaco fans, many of whom never had the opportunity to hear him live in a club setting. If you fall into that category, forget what you've heard. Buy this disc, turn out the lights, close your eyes, turn up the volume, and I'll bet it won't be hard to imagine yourself being right there in the club. And there's no two drink minimum.

Along the same lines as Foxx's "Subterranian Omnidelic Exotour" cd, this album revamps older and a few newer songs. Most aren't really all that different from the originals, just the recording quality is better. There is, however, a KILLER version of "My Sex" on this disc that's worth the price all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Great, except the cowbell.......2005-05-02

My bass teacher lent me this album so I could get familiar with Jaco's playing, and I love it! This and the Birthday Concert are the only albums I have. I love everything about this CD except for one thing. In "I Shot the Sheriff" there are 8 of the WORST cowbell hits I have ever heard in my life. I don't know what he was thinking!

4 out of 5 stars The Best of the Live In NYC Volumes.......2004-08-22

I have most of the "Live In NYC" volumes, Trio or otherwise.
Regardless of the marginal recording quality-no electric bass player has EVER played this skillfully in a nightclub setting live.
The tune "I Shot the Sheriff" is a classic Jaco fireburst. It consists of the basic turnaround riff and 4 chords from beginning to end. But on the solo section-Jaco plays some of the fastest bursts of notes any bassist has dared without gimmicks and guess what? It's tasteful. Not speed metal jazz. Finally in a Trio, we can really hear what he is doing in a live setting.
Don't underestimate Hirum Bullock, just because he doesn't come out the loudest in the mix. I saw him on NBC wail away on the Cream song "White Room" with Jack Bruce, Joe Walsh and Omar Hakim. Bullock is not a loud player. (Now Joe Walsh on a Les Paul is a different story) Hiram is talented. He nails the melody of the "Dear Prudence", "I Shot The Sheriff", "Ode To Billy Joe" tunes as if a vocalist were articulating the voicing. Cissy Strut is a favorite-with an expanded solo section perfect for the form of a trio. The interplay between bass and guitar is more interwoven like a jazzy Clapton and Bruce piece, had Cream continued into a fusion format without Baker. Music is subjective, and many will have their own opinions-but I will tell you that the art of a trio (the power of 3) is perhaps the most under-estimated form of music today. You can hear what's going on and there is space to breathe. There are a series of "overtones" and harmonics going on, that you would not hear with a fourth instrument. Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Don't do it!.......2003-11-06

Forget this whole series of releases-they only taint the image of Jaco that we should preserve-as the best there ever was!
I am certain Jaco's spinning around in his grave by the thought of this cd representing his playing skills.
The playing on here is drunken, loud, insensitive and generally resorts to being based on a very small bag of tricks of licks. And, oh yes-he's playing a fretted bass for more reasons than one!His chops are so depressingly low that the bright moments on this disc(very few and short to be sure)seem to occur during straight'rhythm section-playing'.
Choice of songs is desperate at best...
Listen to Bright Size Life,Trilogue-Live,Shadows and Light or his selftitled debut or even the Birthday Concert you want a clear image of who this guy was and why he will be the inspiration of genrations of musicians to come...
Stay away from this...no foolin'!

5 out of 5 stars Must buy for guitarists/jazz-fusion fans/ and jam lovers.......2002-07-17

I'd only heard a little weather report (pre-jaco) and one jaco song (song for tracy) before I bought this album. I LOVE IT! "I Shot the Sheriff" is definitely NOT one of my favorite songs.. but I like to listen to their cover of it. "Teen Town" is a highlight, as are "Straight Life" and "Son of Creeper". I'm sure "Wipeout" is great as well, but haven't forced myself to listen to it yet.

        5 out of 5 stars About Jaco........2004-12-04

Jaco is a unique musician. There is poor sound quality but Jaco's music doesn't need quality. It needs a great music listener.

        4 out of 5 stars kmtcpp.......2000-09-21

I dont really agree with many of the opinions above. Jaco had worse days than others, and every Jaco fan knows that, but to label this disc as one of his "bad ones" is absolutely wrong. If you've heard the "stuttgart aria" sessions then you'll know what his worse days were like. Compared to Weather Report days, this album is far from good, but nowhere near his bad days. This is a fine piece of work and one of the best in the N.Y series, with an outstanding 17' Teen Town!!!! A must buy in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Raw, joyous Jaco.......2000-06-03

I'm surprised more people haven't flocked to the live albums. Sure, the quality is low and the crowd is interacting with the band - but this is what live recordings are all about. For someone who never got to hear Jaco in a club this is , I believe, the next bext thing. Check out the speed Jaco attempts (and often succeeds with) in his solos and even while backing. The man is sick. A lot of the grooves have been heard before, but in this setting the tempo is more real, the notes more raw, and the energy more tangible. Loved it, and Vol. II.

        4 out of 5 stars don't diss the man.......1998-12-18

the sound quality is poor. jaco is on something or somethings. it's true he had seen better days by then but listen how he responds to the other musicians in a social context. picture perfect jaco.

2 out of 5 stars Bootleg Quality Audience Recording.......1998-07-10

I suppose there's some historical value to having audience walkman recordings of Jaco Pastorius in his less stellar days. It's sort of similar to a lot of those Charlie Parker audience recordings made by fans and released posthomously. If you want the good stuff it would be better to stick with the major label releases or seek out his supporting work with artists like Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny and Albert Mangelsdorff. For die-hards only.
